nostalgic lights One of my favorite things about the holidays has always been the lights. And when I was a kid, I loved turning off the overheads, sitting in a room lit only by my grandmother’s ceramic tabletop Christmas tree.

It looked exactly like this tiny plug-in...only much bigger! I’m so excited to give these to my brother and my sister so we can all have that throwback experience.

For our Holiday Issue planning meeting this year, I sat alone in my kitchen instead of at a conference table with the rest of the GH team. And of course, each editor was perched somewhere in their own home, speaking into their screen. Between jokes about the fact that we don’t just work from home, but work (and school...!) have taken over our personal spaces, we pondered how this year’s season might look.

We analyzed market surveys, trend forecasts and focus group insights — plus, we took a good look at the lives of those closest to us. After all that, here are some thoughts on how the holidays may play out: 1. We are all going to be more careful than ever about how we spend our money. 2. We will look for ways to make or personalize presents. 3. Trips and get-togethers are likely to be put off until another year. 4. We’ll pay more attention than ever to creating meaningful experiences and cherishing those around us. 5. Our nostalgia for seasons past may inform our plans for Christmas present. Not to mention, like much of the rest of our lives, most of us will have little choice but to be “home for the holidays.”

While we were trying to predict the finale to this incredibly surreal year, we started sharing our favorite memories.

It’s amazing how the various rituals we’ve adopted are often what bring warmth and meaning. For this special issue, we decided to focus on “Holiday Stories” (page 43), to open our pages for GH readers and contributors to share their traditions — cultivated over generations or created in recent years. These little (and big!) moments are what make the holidays unique and special for us.

One anecdote that has become near legend in my family is how my dad first learned the truth about Santa. I hope you will feel inspired, as we all figure out what new memories to make for ourselves and our families this topsy-turvy year, to reflect on your own stories.

Brief Summary of Important Patient Information about DUPIXENT® (dupilumab) Rx Only (DU-pix’-ent) injection, for subcutaneous use What is DUPIXENT? • DUPIXENT is a prescription medicine used: – to treat people aged 6 years and older with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) that is not well controlled with prescription therapies used on the skin (topical), or who cannot use topical therapies. DUPIXENT can be used with or without topical corticosteroids.

• DUPIXENT works by blocking two proteins that contribute to a type of inflammation that plays a major role in atopic dermatitis.

• It is not known if DUPIXENT is safe and effective in children with atopic dermatitis under 6 years of age.

Who should not use DUPIXENT? Do not use DUPIXENT if you are allergic to dupilumab or to any of the ingredients in DUPIXENT. • Use DUPIXENT exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

• DUPIXENT comes as a single-dose pre-filled syringe with needle shield or as a pre-filled pen.

• If your dose schedule is every 4 weeks and you miss a dose of DUPIXENT: Give the DUPIXENT injection within 7 days from the missed dose, then continue with your original schedule. If the missed dose is not given within 7 days, start a new every 4 week dose schedule from the time you remember to take your DUPIXENT injection.

• If you inject more DUPIXENT than prescribed, call your healthcare provider right away.

• Your healthcare provider may prescribe other medicines to use with DUPIXENT. Use the other prescribed medicines exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to.

What are the possible side effects of DUPIXENT? DUPIXENT can cause serious side effects, including: • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), including a severe reaction known as anaphylaxis. Stop using DUPIXENT and tell your healthcare provider or get emergency help right away if you get any of the following symptoms: breathing problems, fever, general ill feeling, swollen lymph nodes, swelling of the face, mouth and tongue, hives, itching, fainting, dizziness, feeling lightheaded (low blood pressure), joint pain, or skin rash.

• Eye problems. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new or worsening eye problems, including eye pain or changes in vision.

The most common side effects of DUPIXENT in patients with atopic dermatitis include: injection site reactions, eye and eyelid inflammation, including redness, swelling and itching, and cold sores in your mouth or on your lips. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

A pro facial always starts with thoroughly cleaning the “canvas,” as any makeup or grime on your skin can prevent the treatments that follow from working. To get skin as purified as possible, try double cleansing. “Wash with an oil-based cleanser first,” Lorencin says, to remove makeup, other products and sebum, then follow that with a water-based face wash to clear your skin of impurities like dirt and sweat.

3 The next step in most facials is the steaming process, which helps soften the top layer of skin and pores to prime them for exfoliation, Ling explains. When steaming your skin at home, take extra care not to overdo it, which can lead to dryness. Two ways to try it (safely!), according to Ling: Hover your face over a large bowl of hot water and cover your head with a towel to trap the steam, or soak a towel in warm water and place it over your face for five minutes, then remove it.

Exfoliation is one of the most important steps of a youthboosting facial, sloughing off dead cells to reveal fresh, more radiant skin. Both Ling and Lorencin recommend using a chemical or enyzme exfoliator rather than a physical one like a scrub or brush (these can “leave micro-tears on the face, which are tiny scratches” that may get irritated and lead to breakouts, Lorencin says).

Exfoliating with a peel creates a smooth surface and helps unclog pores, Ling explains. Use circular motions to rub it into skin, focusing on problem areas, like the T-zone, that tend to be oilier and more clogged, she says. Ling recommends one with a detoxifying ingredient like clay or charcoal to help clean out pores further. “If the mask is on the thicker side, wet your fingers with warm water or green tea, then massage it into skin to enhance glow,” Lorencin says, leaving on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing.

“If possible, sit in the bath or a warm shower and let the mask steam gently on your face,” she adds. (Short on time? Apply the mask when you start your regular shower, then wash it off at the end.) This process, in which an aesthetician uses a special tool, often along with their fingers, to remove the clogs in pores, can feel like one of the most satisfying parts of a facial. But it’s one step you should leave to the pros.

“I don’t recommend doing extraction yourself, because if the process is not clean, you can get an infection,” Ling says. GH Beauty Lab scientists also advise visiting a professional for other high-level treatments such as microneedling to avoid skin damage like scarring and infection.

Own AgeFighting Face Mask Treat your complexion to an indulgent, antioxidantrich cocoa face mask whipped together with kitchen staples to help replenish moisture and firm skin. “As skin ages, the moisture barrier begins to break down, leading to dryness,” says skincare expert Jasmina Aganovic.

Enter this treatment, which also includes honey, a humectant that hydrates; sour cream, which contains lactic acid to soften as it gently exfoliates; and egg white, with protein that tightens skin.

ear Santa, I haven’t written to you since I was a little girl living in a rundown shack at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. My daddy said there was no need for me to write you since we lived so far back in the woods that you’d never find us anyway. And I think he was probably right about that. I never did get the things on my list, but it didn’t stop me from believing in you. I still believe in you and I’m out of the backwoods now, so I’m gonna take another chance on writing to you to ask you for some very special things, not only for myself but for everyone for Christmas this year.

Santa, please bring joy to those who have lost the ability to laugh and enjoy life because of this critical time.

And Santa, bring hope for a better and brighter tomorrow, hope for the poor and the downtrodden, hope for those who have given up all hope.

Santa, please bring lots of love, enough to heal this wounded world, enough to help mend our differences, enough to open our eyes to the fact that we’re all God’s children and we all have an equal right to live in this world together in peace.

1. In medium saucepan, combine cream, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and 2 cups milk. Cook on medium until tiny bubbles begin to appear around edge of pot (do not let boil), 2 to 3 min. Remove from heat; let steep 30 min.

2. Meanwhile, in large bowl of electric mixer, beat egg yolks on medium speed until combined. Gradually beat in sugar and pinch of salt. Increase speed to high; beat until thick and very pale in color, 2 to 3 min.

3. Strain cream mixture, discarding spices; return to pot. Slowly whisk 1 cup warm cream mixture into yolk mixture on low speed; add to pot with cream mixture. Cook on medium, stirring constantly with rubber spatula, until mixture reaches 170°F and coats spatula, 5 to 7 min.

4. Place pot over large bowl filled with ice water and let cool, stirring occasionally, until chilled, 20 to 30 min. Stir in rum, bourbon and remaining 2 cups milk.

5. Just before serving, beat egg whites with electric mixer on medium-high speed until soft peaks form, 1 to 2 min.; fold into eggnog. Serve topped with nutmeg.

Makes 111/2 cups.

AL ROKER: Sweet Potato Poon, basically sweet potato cas­ serole with marshmal­ lows, is a Thanksgiving staple in my family.

Growing up, one of us kids would distract my mom as soon as the dish went under the broiler. Inevitably, the top would burn and the smoke alarm would go off. It pro­ vided us with endless entertainment.

SHEINELLE JONES: We usually spend Christmas with my husband’s family in Chicago. Before we open gifts, we talk about the true meaning of Christmas.

I know things may look a little different this year, but now more than ever, I look forward to the warm feelings the holiday season brings.

DYLAN DREYER: My husband, Brian, and I have a collection of ornaments from the big moments in our lives — when we got married and when we had kids. As I was growing up, my mom always unwrapped the ornaments one by one and told us the story of each. It takes a while, but it’s worth it.

CRAIG MELVIN: On Christmas Day, we sing “Happy Birthday” to a little ceramic baby Jesus in a manger and blow out a candle on a cake. My wife Lindsay’s grand­ parents started the tradition years ago, and I recall thinking it was a joke. It was not.

Q I used oven cleaner to “prep” my self-cleaning oven for holiday cooking. Now there’s a white residue. Help!

— LYNNE T.

I need a new handheld vacuum. Is it a good idea to get one with a removable battery?

— KELLY H.

A: It’s important to clean your oven at least once or twice a year to

keep grease from building up, and a spruce-up before the holiday cooking marathon is a great idea. Unfortunately, you learned the hard way that a spray oven cleaner can mar the interior surfaces of some self-cleaning ovens, even if the label says it’s safe to use. I’ll bet your oven’s manual says to avoid them—most do. The good news is, it’s unlikely that your oven is forever damaged. Try removing or lightening the residue with a thin paste of baking soda and white vinegar. Apply it to a small area at a time with a cloth or soft brush. Let it set for 15 minutes, then scrub gently with a non-scratch pad or brush and wipe with a wetted smooth cloth to rinse. GH Lab Tip: Most self-cleaning ovens have a clearly visible “Clean” button or light on their controls.

A: Yes, I think so! We’re seeing more vacuums designed this way as companies make products more versatile, and there are pluses to being able to pop out the battery. The most obvious one is that you can plug in just the battery for charging and keep the rest out of sight. You also can often buy an extra battery so as to always have one charged and ready to go.

These benefits outweigh the minor inconvenience of detaching and reattaching the battery. Our Lab Test winners (see page 76) Worx and Ridgid even offer power tools, such as drills, that can be run using the same battery.

Switching from paper or plastic grocery bags to sturdy reusable ones is an easy way to reduce waste. But large totes can be unwieldy (and heavy when full), and small ones don’t hold much. IN APRIL 2017, Roxie Meza, of Bradenton, FL, posted an adorable picture on social media of her infant daughter, Emilie, sitting in a green plastic high chair, her fine hair forming a sparse halo of messy dark curls around her smiling face.

But Roxie wasn’t fishing for “Likes” — far from it.

The caption, written in Emilie’s voice, read I need you to help save my life…. Emilie’s family had recently learned that the little girl had leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant.

Emilie’s health journey had actually begun a couple of months before, when she was 7 months old. Out of the blue, the thriving infant started displaying unexplained fevers, diarrhea and lethargy. The first two doctors who examined Emilie thought she had a virus. A third apparently suspected anemia, and she received two emergency blood transfusions.

Then, about two months after the mysterious symptoms began, Emilie woke up looking pale. When Roxie changed her diaper and saw blood in her stool, she and her husband, Eduardo, rushed their baby girl to the emergency room at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in nearby St. Petersburg.

Samples of Emilie’s blood and bone marrow were sent to the lab — and she was admitted. “They put us in the oncology unit, but I was so focused on Emilie’s well-being, I didn’t think about what that meant,” recalls Roxie, 33, a stay-at-home mom. “I walked into the hallway and saw two little kids who were bald — and it hit me like a slap in the face: Emilie could have cancer.”

A few days later, a doctor confirmed the diagnosis. Emilie had acute myeloid leukemia, a rapidly advancing type of blood cancer that strikes about 730 children under 20 in the U.S. every year.

“I felt so many emotions all at once — fear, shock, sadness, worry, disbelief,” says Roxie. “It was like a scene from a movie where the actor is standing stock-still and everything around them is swirling.”

Seventy percent of the blood cells in Emilie’s bone marrow — the soft, spongy tissue inside the bones where blood cells and platelets are made — were abnormal white cells known as myeloblasts. These leukemia cells were proliferating so fast, they were crowding out Emilie’s healthy cells. As a result, her numbers of normal white blood cells (which fight infection), red blood cells (which deliver oxygen to the body’s tissues) and platelets (which promote clotting to prevent out-of-control bleeding) were getting dangerously low.

Emilie started intensive chemotherapy the next day. After five weeks, her blood was still swarming with cancer cells, so a new doctor, hematologist-

oncologist Benjamin Oshrine, M.D., who handles bone marrow transplant cases, took over her care. Bone marrow transplant is a common treatment for pediatric AML patients who don’t respond well to chemotherapy. By taking bone marrow from a healthy donor and transfusing it into a patient with leukemia or another blood-related disorder, doctors can often cure these otherwise fatal illnesses.

Unfortunately, Emilie faced a significant hurdle: The key to the treatment’s success is finding a bone marrow donor who is a good match for the patient, but the Mezas are Hispanic. Locating an ideal donor is a daunting challenge — often an insurmountable one — for people of color.

WHY ETHNICITY MATTERS Finding a bone marrow match goes beyond blood type matching, Dr. Oshrine explains. The most important elements are human leukocyte antigen (HLA) proteins on the body’s cells. HLA proteins are dictated in part by ethnicity, but they can vary among people of the same race and even among people in the same family.

“HLA proteins are linked to your immune system, which is shaped by your ancestors’ geography and experiences, whether they lived through pandemics or wars or mass migrations,” explains Abeer Madbouly, Ph.D., principal bioinformatics scientist at the National Marrow Donor Program’s Be the Match Registry, a nonprofit that recruits donors and connects them to patients in need.

HLA markers are important to a transplant’s success because the immune system uses these markers to identify which cells belong in the body and which don’t.

If a donor’s marrow is a poor match, the immune cells in the new marrow will attack healthy cells in the recipient’s body, a potentially fatal transplant complication known as graft-versus-host disease.

siblings (one sister is a full biological sibling, and another sister and a brother are half-siblings), but none had HLA markers that matched hers, which was unsurprising because the likelihood of a full sibling being a close match is just 25%. Roxie and Eduardo were both half matches, as a child gets half their HLA from each parent. If absolutely necessary, one of them could donate their marrow, thanks to recent advances that minimize graft-versus-host disease with half matches. But the ideal donor is a full match, even if they are a total stranger.

color are not well represented in its database, partly because of deep-seated distrust of the medical system, says Akiim DeShay, the founder of blackbonemarrow .com, which promotes awareness of Black bone marrow donation.

Since the time of slavery, when doctors performed experimental gynecological surgeries on women, Black people in particular have been abused and taken advantage of by the medical establishment. “Many of us heard family stories of relatives who walked into hospitals and never came out or were admitted and sent home too early,” says DeShay, who received a lifesaving bone marrow transplant in 2004, when he had leukemia. And the problem continues: A 2017 NPR poll found that 32% of Black Americans and 20% of Latinos said they’d been discriminated against at a doctor’s office or a health clinic.

The registry reflects these issues.

While white people have a 77% chance of finding a match, the odds plummet from there (see chart at left). Hispanics like the Mezas have just a 46% chance of finding a match.

The paucity of diverse donors has heartbreaking consequences. Jasmine and Sven Hamilton, who live in California’s Bay Area, worked diligently for two months to find a match for stem cell donation for their mixed-race son, Savian, now 6, who was diagnosed with

peripheral T-cell lymphoma in September 2019. After they came up emptyhanded, Jasmine, a half match, donated her stem cells — but Savian has been battling a severe case of graft-versushost disease ever since. “I encourage people in all communities to educate themselves on bone marrow and stem cell donation and understand what it means to families,” says Jasmine, who is Black. “The pain of watching your child go through something like this is indescribable.”

The family of Savian Hamilton, who is mixed-race, wasn’t able to find him an ideal donor match.

THE RACE TO FIND A DONOR Emilie didn’t match with anyone in the registry. Worried and disappointed, Roxie turned to social media. “I started posting about Emilie’s need for a bone marrow donor, and it snowballed,” she recalled. “Total strangers started holding bone marrow drives on Emilie’s behalf. There were drives in Florida, near where we live, but women in Utah, Tennessee and California organized them as well. We were absolutely shocked and overwhelmed by people’s kindness and generosity.”

As Roxie revved up the donor search, posting updates about Emilie’s health almost daily, Emilie was in the midst of her second round of chemotherapy. Prior to transplant, doctors use chemotherapy to kill as many leukemia cells as possible and disable the recipient’s immune DECEMBER 2020 G H

system so it won’t reject the transplant.

Once the new bone marrow takes hold, it creates a healthy new immune system inside the patient.

“I was living in the hospital with Emilie, since I couldn’t expose her to any outside germs,” recalls Roxie. “Emilie weathered the first chemo round fairly well. But during the second round, she spiked a persistent fever.” When Emilie had to go to the ICU, Roxie felt helpless: “Something terrible is happening to your child, and you can’t do anything about it.”

Within a few days of the crisis, Emilie’s health bounced back, but the scare pushed Roxie’s stress to a whole new level. “I never let myself think about the fact that we might lose our sweet girl, but I came pretty close to imagining the worst in that moment,” she says. “Fortunately, Emilie is incredibly strong. Her ability to handle everything she went through was remarkable.”

Even the nurses and doctors were struck by Emilie’s resilience. “She was always smiling, no matter how intense her treatment was,” recalls Dr. Oshrine.

“From the time the Mezas learned that Emilie needed a transplant and the difficulty of finding donors, they became passionate about increasing donor

options for everyone — and they worked tirelessly at it while their child was going through chemo, an extraordinarily difficult time for any family.”

Two months after the Mezas’ donor search began, more than 10,000 people had registered with Be the Match in hopes of helping little Emilie — a record for the registry at the time. But not a single person had marrow compatible with hers. “We wanted a full match to ensure the best possible outcome for our little girl, but Emilie couldn’t wait any longer,” says Roxie.

AN IMPERFECT GIFT Without a perfect volunteer, the Mezas and Dr. Oshrine decided they’d use Eduardo’s marrow, the next best thing.

Even five years ago, using a donor who was a half match was impossible because the risk of graft-versus-host disease was too high. But researchers discovered that administering a combination of medications at a specific point after transplant significantly reduced the risk.

Still, bone marrow transplants are risky. “In kids like Emilie, they are successful about 70% of the time,” says Dr. Oshrine. “In about 5% to 10% of cases, the patient develops an infection

because the intensive pre-transplant chemotherapy wipes out their immune system. And in 20% or so of patients, the disease returns after the transplant.”

At 5:30 a.m. on June 15, 2017, Eduardo arrived at a hospital 45 minutes away from Emilie’s. Doctors made tiny incisions on the back of both sides of his pelvic bone and used hollow needles to withdraw a small amount of his liquid marrow. “I was worried that my bone marrow wouldn’t help Emilie, since I was only a half match, but I liked the idea of her getting mine instead of a stranger’s,” says Eduardo. “And I was willing to do whatever it took to save my little girl.”

When he awoke a few hours later, he felt sore and sluggish. “But I got out of bed and started pacing back and forth to get the anesthesia out of my system so I could get to Emilie in time to see the transfusion,” he says.

When he arrived at Emilie’s hospital room in midafternoon, Roxie was holding their sleeping baby in her arms, and what looked like blood in a bag was dripping through a tube into Emilie’s body. After the drama of the prior months, the transplant itself was anticlimactic. But inside their child’s body, something remarkable was happening. As Eduardo’s marrow

entered Emilie’s veins, its cells, which had built-in homing devices, migrated straight to her bone marrow, where they would begin the lifesaving process of repopulating her depleted tissue with healthy new cells. “Knowing the marrow from my bones had the power to cure Emilie was one of the proudest moments of my life,” says Eduardo.

BACK TO CHILDHOOD Emilie had to stay in the hospital for nearly two nerve-racking months after her transplant. “The chemo had wiped out all the cells Emilie needed to survive, so she had to have blood transfusions almost every day,” says Roxie. “Without healthy immune and blood cells, she had terrible diaper rash and bruises everywhere. But by week three, the doctors told us the new cells were starting to implant and there was evidence her immune system was regenerating.

At that point, I felt like we could start to relax a little.”

The day they went home, Emilie wore a Supergirl costume, complete with a red tutu. As they walked down the hallway, Emilie in Eduardo’s arms, the staff sang, “If you’re happy to go home, clap your hands.” Emilie clapped and beamed,

clearly delighted at all the attention, then rang a bell symbolizing that she was done with in-hospital chemo. When Roxie posted a video of the scene, 1,000 people liked it and nearly 400 shared it. “I’ll never forget that moment,” says Roxie.

Today, Emilie is 4 — and incredibly healthy. “She rarely gets sick. She loves to sing and learn; she loves sparkly clothes and anything blue,” says Roxie.

“Her favorite toy is a little bear. She listens to its chest with a stethoscope and takes its temperature. And her best friend is her daddy. The two of them have a beautiful connection.”

Emilie’s difficult journey had another heartwarming outcome: “We’ve heard that some of the people who donated in Emilie’s name may have been matches for other kids in need,” says Roxie. Says Eduardo, “It’s stressful knowing there’s a treatment that will save your child’s life and not being able to find the right donor.

I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.” He adds, “We all have the means to give bone marrow to someone who is sick and suffering, whether we know them or not. If a doctor called me today and told me my marrow could help save someone else, I’d say, ‘Just tell me when and where to go.’ ”

Thousands of people signed up to donate bone marrow to Emilie Meza, but not one of them was a match. In fact, about 12,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed every year with leukemia, lymphoma and other lifethreatening diseases that can be treated with a bone marrow transplant. But more than 9,700 people are currently without a match.

SWAB YOUR CHEEK. Be the Match mails you a cheek swab kit to get a sample of your DNA. BE PREPARED. One in 40 members is called for additional testing, and one in 300 is selected as the best possible donor for a person who needs a transplant.

GET REIMBURSED. If you’re a match, expect the process, including getting a physical exam and blood tests, to take 20 to 30 hours total over four to six weeks. If travel is required, Be the Match will cover the cost.

The organization will also work with your employer to help you get necessary time off and assist with child-care costs.

SIGNS YOU CROSSED THE LINE You’re parched, you have a headache and you are sensitive to sound and light. You may also be irritable, tired and achy and have loose stools. No one knows exactly what causes hangovers, but one hypothesis is that alcohol causes the liver and brain to release inflammatory chemicals into the body.

DAMAGE CONTROL You can’t stop a hangover with any of the supplements you see hyped online, says Robert M. Swift, M.D., a researcher at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Rhode Island and a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University.

But you can treat each symptom as needed. Get some sunlight to wake yourself up. Drink fluids with electrolytes to battle dehydration, and take ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen for the headache. (Do not take acetaminophen within 24 hours of drinking alcohol, though, as this can cause liver damage.) Eating small amounts of bland foods like dry toast can help with queasiness.

you’re experiencing confusion, vomiting, seizures, slow or irregular breathing or low body temperature — these are signs of alcohol poisoning. And if frequent hangovers are affecting your quality of life, you may need treatment for an alcohol problem.

AVOID FUTURE REGRET

Keep it light — darker drinks like brandy, bourbon, dark beer and red wine have more congeners, chemicals that can contribute to hangovers. Also, when you drink on an empty stomach, all the alcohol hits your system at once, so have some food and sip water. The best way to prevent a hangover is to drink less: The recommended max is one drink per day for women. That’s 12 oz of beer, 5 oz of wine or 1.5 oz of a distilled spirit like vodka.

Seeing a doctor virtually isn’t new (about 7 million people did so in 2018), but avoiding exposure to the coronavirus has made it a necessity. Even before the pandemic took hold in the U.S., telemedicine appointments were up 33% over the previous year, and 83% of people say they expect to continue using e-medicine services after the pandemic resolves, according to a Doctor.com survey. It is often the most time-saving,

convenient option, and research shows that it can be just as effective as (and in some cases more effective than) in-office care.

Below, the latest on using this medium.

1. Place pizza stone or baking sheet on bottom oven rack and dust pizza peel or second sheet with cornmeal. Heat oven to 475°F.

Top with 3 cups baby spinach and 4 oz thinly sliced ham, then arrange 1/4 red onion (sliced into rings and separated) on top. 1. Heat oven to 450°F. On large rimmed baking sheet, toss together 6 oz tortilla chips (about 7 cups), 21/2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken breast, 1 cup grated sharp Cheddar, and one 15-oz can low-sodium black beans (rinsed).

Sprinkle 1 cup grated Cheddar on top and bake until cheese is melted and beans are heated through, 6 to 7 min.

2. Meanwhile, in blender, puree 1/2 ripe avocado, 1/4 cup fresh lime juice, 1 Tbsp olive oil, 1 cup chopped cilantro stems, 2 Tbsp cilantro leaves, 2 Tbsp water, and pinch of salt until smooth, adding more water if needed.

3. Drizzle sauce over nachos and sprinkle with 6 small radishes and 1 jalapeño (all thinly sliced) and 1/4 cup cilantro.

1. Heat oven to 400°F. Place coriander in heavy-duty resealable plastic bag and crush with bottom of heavy pan. In small bowl, combine coriander with garlic, rosemary and 2 Tbsp oil; set aside.

2. In large roasting pan, toss carrots, potatoes and onions with remaining 2 Tbsp oil and 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper; roast 15 min.

3. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, combine apple, apricots, almonds and ginger. Using sharp knife, cut horizontal slit through entire pork loin and open like a book. Season inside of pork with 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper, then top with apple mixture.

Fold pork back up and tie with kitchen twine, spacing ties about 11/2 in. apart.

4. Season pork with 1/2 tsp each salt and coarsely ground pepper, then rub with coriander-garlic mixture. Nestle pork among vegetables and roast until thermometer registers 145°F, 35 to 40 min. more. Transfer pork to cutting board and let rest at least 10 min. before slicing. Serve with vegetables.

4. Heat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Using floured pine tree and reindeer cookie cutters, cut out cookies and place on prepared baking sheets. Reroll, chill and cut scraps.

5. Bake, rotating positions of pans halfway through, until cookies are light golden brown around edges, 10 to 12 min. Let cool on sheets 5 min. before transferring to wire racks to cool completely. Decorate as desired.

1. Clean and prep desired wall(s) with 2" painter’s tape and use a drop cloth to protect the floor. Then paint wall with Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl or similar gray paint.

2. Once paint has dried, combine equal parts Silver Graphite paint pigment and clear acrylic paint (urethane flat).

3. Cover bristles of dry paintbrush (2" or wider works best) with paint. In circular motion, lightly apply paint to wall, adjusting amount of paint and pressure to achieve desired look.

4. Alternating between dry paintbrush and dry lint-free rag, buff paint into wall, varying its darkness to create a concrete look.

5. Should an area become too dark, spray wall with water from a spray bottle and remove any dark areas with second rag. Once it air-dries, apply more paint.

In March, when the COVID-19 pandemic sent schools online and forced students into social isolation, counselors and educators knew college admissions metrics would have to change too.

Traditionally, enrollment committees look at a student’s grades, test scores, extracurricular activities and personal statement to determine their readiness for higher education. But the pandemic halted many of those activities and presented unprecedented challenges even to the most high-achieving high schoolers.

Many colleges have pivoted to virtual events that offer an even better opportunity to learn about them.

Those sessions let even shy attendees talk to current students, professors and counselors via a chat box.

Coalition for College also launched virtual college fairs designed to present students with panels of four very different schools, says Stacey Kostell, CEO of the coalition. You might find a perfect fit with a school you’d never otherwise have considered. cast a wide net. Mike

The good news is, colleges are going to be far more flexible this year, says Todd Rinehart, president of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. “If the pandemic had a genuine effect on your family circumstances and your ability to do well at school, that’s an important part of your story,” he adds. In fact, in June, more than 300 admissions deans released a statement in conjunction with Turning the Tide, a national effort spearheaded by the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Making Caring Common Project, which aims to increase admissions equity and access, among other goals. They encouraged

applicants to talk honestly in their applications about the obstacles students faced and committed to carefully considering them. Things like caring for siblings, shopping for elderly neighbors and writing thank-you notes to essential workers are all meaningful activities, says Making Caring Common Project faculty director Richard Weissbourd, Ed.D. The Common App now has an extra box where students can explain how the pandemic affected them, and the Coalition for College application, used by many colleges, includes a checklist to help contextualize aspects of students’ home lives. Here are a few

That way, you can pivot if you don’t feel safe traveling far, your finances change or your dream school goes virtual. Finally, don’t let price scare you off. Once you factor in financial aid and scholarships as well as the likelihood of graduating within four to six years, a private school might end up being the cheapest option.

When you deck the halls, cook up your favorite meals and host guests for the holidays, pets will likely get curious about the new sights and smells. Here’s how to keep them safe.

Nix table scraps Most of us know chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, but many other common foods, including onions, garlic, raisins and currants as well as the artificial sweetener xylitol, are also dangerous for pets, explains Daniel Edge, D.V.M., M.Sc., director of medical affairs at Zoetis, a global animal health company. Unbaked yeasted dough can expand and obstruct dogs’ stomachs, and alcoholic beverages can cause low blood sugar. Bones, especially from poultry, can get caught in a dog’s esophagus, says Carly Fox, D.V.M., of Animal Medical Center in New York City, and rich and fatty foods may lead to an upset stomach. Ask guests not to sneak pets snacks or, if they can’t resist, to offer them a little kibble.

Store garbage bins where pets can’t get into them. If you notice symptoms like vomiting, seizures, lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, drooling or excessive thirst or urination, call your vet.

Avoid poisonous plants Poinsettias may get a bad rap, but they’re only mildly toxic to cats and dogs, says Fox. (However, pets who ingest them can suffer from vomiting and diarrhea.) Lilies are far more dangerous, as they can cause acute kidney failure in cats. Fox advises keeping those plants out of the house entirely, but if your cat gets into one, take them to the vet right away. Mistletoe berries can cause gastrointestinal upset and, at high doses,

even cardiac symptoms, so keep them away from your furry friends or opt for artificial evergreens.

Watch pets around decorations Never leave dogs or cats unsupervised with string lights or other electric decorations, since they can burn their mouths or get electrocuted if they play with them, Fox says.

Tinsel, ribbon and garland are particularly hazardous for cats, who love shiny objects.

If ingested, these can cause vomiting, diarrhea and GI upset and may get stuck in the intestines. If your pet stops eating or starts vomiting, take them to the vet. Some dogs will drink tree water, which can include harmful pesticides and aspirin to keep the tree green — while a few licks won’t hurt, don’t let yours use it as a water source.

Safeguard other common hazards Store medications and cleaning products in cabinets and off countertops, Edge advises, and tell your guests to do the same. Close your toilet lid, especially if you use an automatic cleaner, and keep toxic antifreeze away from pets, as they may like its sweet taste.
