chalk pops With our easy recipe, you can make sidewalk chalk in fun shapes using ice pop or silicone baking molds. First, choose molds you no longer use for food. Spray the insides with plain cooking spray. In a disposable plastic container, mix plaster of paris (we used 1 cup to fill two 3-ounce wells in our mold) with water according to the package directions. Stir in poster or tempera paint, a drip at a time, until the mixture reaches the desired color. Pour the plaster into the mold, then tap the sides to release any large air bubbles. To make more colors, wipe any remaining plaster from your mixing container with a paper towel and start a new batch. Allow the plaster to harden overnight before removing the chalk from the molds.

CRAFTER’S TIP Never rinse plaster into the sink. Instead, wait for it to dry, then throw the dried plaster away.

CRAFTER’S TIP Earring wires are available at craft stores; ours were $3 for 30 pairs.

First dye the pasta. For each color, pour 5 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol into a ziplock bag. (You can substitute distilled white vinegar for the rubbing alcohol, but the pasta will become a bit more brittle.) Add 15 or so drops of food coloring. Seal the bag and swirl it to combine. Add ½ cup pasta, then seal the bag, removing as much air as possible. Move the pasta

around so that the color is evenly distributed. Let it sit in the bag for 15 minutes, then pour the pasta onto a cookie sheet lined with foil. Use a skewer to spread the pieces into a single layer to dry completely, about an hour.

2. Penne-dants: Glue pasta pieces (we used ziti, wagon wheels, ditalini, and a star) together with tacky glue. Let them dry on waxed paper.

If needed, adhere a piece of ditalini to the back to provide a hole for stringing.

From a cardboard egg carton, cut a section consisting of two cups and the raised post between them. Cut ears from cereal-box cardboard and glue them to the back rim of the carton. Paint as desired. Glue on googly eyes and a pom-pom nose. To use the puppet, press a finger or two into the back of the nose section.

4. Circular earrings: Loop and twist one end of a 5-inch length of craft wire around an earring wire. Thread stars and ditalini onto the craft wire, bend it into a circle, then loop and twist the end around the earring.

Calling all creative families: this month, we challenge you to make something fun out of newspaper. To inspire you, we crafted the project below. So go ahead and top it. If we pick your idea, you could win $200 and awesome bragging rights.

curled-up kitty We coiled strips of newspaper to make a cat, but you can use the technique to form other animals and letters. Go wild!

1. Cut a sheet of newspaper lengthwise into 5-inch-wide sections. We used 5½ strips to make our cat.

2. Fold each strip in half lengthwise 3 times to end up with a strip that’s roughly ½ inch wide. Press the folds flat.

3. Start coiling by rolling one end of the strip tightly around itself. Add strips to the coil by adhering the overlapping ends with a glue stick.

Finish the shape by gluing down the end.

YOU TOPPED

In November, we challenged families to make something with cardboard tubes. Out of all the creative entries we received, our favorite was by the Weinroth family from the Bronx, New York. Mom Orital and sons Eli (age 11), David (9), and Yishai (6) trimmed tubes into chess figure shapes. The boys painted them and added washi tape stripes for an extra decorative touch. The best thing about the set, according to Orital, is that if you lose a piece, all you need is another cardboard tube to replace it. Check and mate, Weinroth family!

4. For the eyes and head, start with a larger center circle before coiling.

6. Arrange the shapes on waxed paper and add tacky glue where the pieces touch. Let the glue dry completely.

carrot crisps Tempt everybunny in your family with this wholesome twist on veggie chips.

1. Heat the oven to 375°.

Lightly coat two baking sheets with cooking spray.

Use a vegetable peeler to peel away the carrots’ outer layer; discard. Peel the rest of each carrot lengthwise into thin strips.

2. In a large bowl, use your hands to toss the carrot strips with the sugar, salt, and cinnamon until coated.

3. Evenly divide the strips between the baking sheets, being careful not to overlap.

Bake for 15 minutes, switching the position of the pans halfway through.

Turn off the oven, open the door slightly, and let the strips remain inside for 10 minutes more.

4. Meanwhile, stir together the ingredients for the yogurt dip. Serve the crisps with the dip on the side.

Liven up dinnertime conversation with a goofy challenge that encourages everyone to chat while they eat. Before your meal, have each family member secretly jot down a funny or outrageous sentence on a slip of paper (“I ate crickets for lunch today”), then place it under another family member’s plate. At the start of the meal, each player reads the message to himself, then tries to work it into the conversation without being detected. There are no winners or losers, but smiles are guaranteed!

cooking spray and freeze until set, about 45 minutes. Meanwhile, sprinkle 2 packets unflavored gelatin into ½ cup cold lemonade.

Let it sit 1 minute, then stir in 1½ cups boiling lemonade, ¼ cup lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons honey.

Let the mixture cool to room temperature,

then divide among four 8-ounce glasses.

Refrigerate until beginning to set, about 75 minutes. Add gelatin cubes and a straw to each glass and return to the refrigerator to set completely, about 30 minutes. Garnish with lemon slices, then see how many sips the kids attempt before they grab spoons!

MY THIRD-GRADER, Ella,

started her first choir audition by singing very softly. From the piano bench, Mrs. Schmidt, the music teacher, leaned in to hear her. As my 4-year-old, Sophie, and I watched, Mrs. Schmidt led Ella through a series of exercises: repeating a simple melody picked out on the piano keys, watching herself in a mirror as she made different mouth shapes to change her voice’s tone.

But it was the last bit of the audition that impressed me the most.

“Now, Ella, I know that singing for someone you don’t know can be challenging,” said Mrs. Schmidt, “but you did very well.” She began drawing bricks at the bottom of the audition assessment sheet. “This is your confidence wall,” she said.

“And you just took a very important step in building it. So the next time you’re scared about having to do something, I want you to think about this wall.”

She pointed to a brick and wrote “choir audition” in it. “This brick will be part of your confidence wall.”

When Mrs. Schmidt introduced Ella to the idea of the confidence wall, she was also introducing it to me and my partner, Josh. It proved useful a few months later, when Ella had difficulties with a new friend. As Ella unpacked her lunch, the friend would make a face and say things like, “That’s disgusting. I can’t believe anyone would eat that.” Ella tried acting as if it didn’t bother her, with comebacks such as, “Well, I guess you’re missing out.” After a

couple of weeks, though, as the nasty remarks kept coming, Ella struggled to shrug them off.

After some discussion, we encouraged Ella to tell her friend that her behavior was not okay. Not an easy task, but Ella went ahead and talked to her friend the next day. After school, Josh asked her how it went. “It was kinda hard,” Ella said. “She just looked away. I had to ask, ‘Did you hear me?’ She said ‘Yeah, I heard you.’ ” After she told me the story that evening, I said, “See? You just added another brick in your confidence wall.” Her eyes lit up. The lunch comments haven’t been an issue since.

ELLA IS a fourth-grader now, and we still talk about the confidence wall when she’s a bit apprehensive before a test, a play, or a choir performance. This year, when Ella ran for secretary of the student council, she had to give a speech in front of several hundred students. She was nervous, but I reminded

her, “You’ve been in front of people before.

You’re standing on your confidence wall.” She smiled, recalling her talk with Mrs. Schmidt.

When Ella and other candidates practiced their campaign speeches in front of a small audience, she didn’t have much energy. Afterward, we discussed the other speeches and why some of them stood out. She mustered her confidence, and on election day, her teachers reported, she was strong and enthusiastic, opening with a rousing “I want to be YOUR secretary!”

At 9, Ella is nearing middle school, often a challenging passage, but I’m not worried. She has more self-confidence than I ever had at her age.

As a kid, I avoided eye contact; Ella has a direct gaze. While I might have hummed to myself, she exuberantly sings Katy Perry’s “Roar.” It all started that day she laid the first brick in a wall that seems sure to reach great heights.

I’ve always kept an “inventors’ box” full of interesting trash: empty tape spools, foil candy wrappers, and more. In general, if something can’t be recycled, it goes in the box. 2. Cook chicken in butter, season with salt, white pepper and Italian seasoning in a large skillet over medium-high heat until chicken is no longer pink.

Stir in onion and parsley; cook until onions are transparent.

3. Add garlic cloves, cream and Cajun seasoning and boil. Reduce heat; simmer 3–4 mins. or until mixture begins to thicken. Stir in Parmesan.

Add pasta and toss.

According to what scientists call “the hygiene hypothesis,” our society’s overemphasis on cleanliness may block our exposure to beneficial bugs. The trillions of microorganisms that live inside us (including ones we pick up from our environment) “are doing something important for us,” says Dr. Dorothy Matthews, a professor at The Sage Colleges. “Especially the ones in our gastrointestinal tract, where most of our immune response happens.” In addition, Matthews and her colleague Susan Jenks discovered that mice exposed to a common soil microbe experienced a boost of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin and a decrease in anxiety-related behaviors. In short, she says, “There’s something about exposure to organisms found in soil that’s good for us.” So go ahead and make those mud pies (just don’t eat ’em!).

BUILD WITH BRICKS Since ancient times, people have built entire villages using mud bricks, and your little ones can, too—on a smaller scale, of course. You, your parent, a caregiver or others who may be in a position to administer EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® Auto-Injector, should know how to use it before you have an allergic emergency.

This information does not take the place of talking with your health care professional about your medical condition or your treatment. If you have any questions, ask your health care professional.

What is the most important information I should know about the EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®?

1. EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® contain a medicine used to treat allergic emergencies (anaphylaxis). Anaphylaxis can be life-threatening, can happen within minutes, and can be caused by stinging and biting insects, allergy injections, foods, medicines, exercise, or unknown causes.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis may include: • trouble breathing • wheezing • hoarseness (changes in the way your voice sounds) • hives (raised reddened rash that may itch) • severe itching • swelling of your face, lips, mouth, or tongue • skin rash, redness, or swelling • fast heartbeat • weak pulse • feeling very anxious • confusion • stomach pain • losing control of urine or bowel movements (incontinence) • diarrhea or stomach cramps • dizziness, fainting, or “passing out” (unconsciousness) 2. Always carry your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® with you because you may not know when anaphylaxis may happen.

Talk to your health care professional if you need additional units to keep at work, school or other locations. Tell your family members, caregivers and others where you keep your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® and how to use it before you need it. You may be unable to speak in an allergic emergency.

3. When you have an allergic emergency (anaphylaxis): • Use EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® right away.

• Get emergency medical help right away.

You may need further medical attention.

You may need to use a second EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® if symptoms continue or recur.

Only a health care professional should give additional doses of epinephrine if you need more than 2 injections for a single anaphylaxis episode.

What are EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®?

• EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® are disposable, prefilled automatic injection devices (auto-injectors) used to treat lifethreatening, allergic emergencies including anaphylaxis in people who are at risk for or have a history of serious allergic emergencies. Each device contains a single dose of epinephrine.

• EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® are for immediate self (or caregiver) administration and do not take the place of emergency medical care. You should get emergency help right away after using EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®.

• EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® are for people who have been prescribed this medicine by their health care professional.

• The EpiPen® Auto-Injector (0.3 mg) is for patients who weigh 66 pounds or more (30 kilograms or more).

• The EpiPen Jr® Auto-Injector (0.15 mg) is for patients who weigh about 33 to 66 pounds (15 to 30 kilograms).

• It is not known if EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® are safe and effective in children who weigh less than 33 pounds (15 kilograms).

What should I tell my health care professional before using the EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®?

Before you use EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®, tell your health care professional about all your medical conditions, but especially if you: • have heart problems or high blood pressure • have diabetes • have thyroid problems • have asthma • have a history of depression • have Parkinson’s disease • have any other medical conditions • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if epinephrine will harm your unborn baby.

• are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

It is not known if epinephrine passes into your breast milk.

Tell your health care professional about all the medicines you take including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements.

Tell your health care professional of all known allergies.

Especially tell your health care professional if you take certain asthma medicines.

EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® and other medicines may affect each other, causing side effects.

EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® works.

Use your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® for treatment of anaphylaxis as prescribed by your health care professional, regardless of your medical conditions or the medicines you take.

What are the possible side effects of the EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®?

EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® may cause serious side effects.

• The EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® should only

be injected into the middle of your outer thigh (upper leg). Do not inject the EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® into your: • veins • buttocks • fingers, toes, hands, or feet If you accidentally inject EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr® into any other part of your body, go to the nearest emergency room right away. Tell the health care professional where on your body you received the accidental injection.

If you have certain medical conditions, or take certain medicines, your condition may get worse or you may have longer lasting side effects when you use your EpiPen® or EpiPen Jr®. Talk to your health care professional about all your medical conditions.

Common side effects of EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr® include: • fast, irregular or “pounding” heartbeat • sweating • headache • weakness • shakiness • paleness • feelings of over excitement, nervousness or anxiety • dizziness • nausea or vomiting • breathing problems These side effects may go away with rest.

Tell your health care professional if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

HOW IT’S DONE 1. In a small glass, mix 3 tablespoons of water with 10 drops of food coloring.

2. Fill a large glass with water, then add 1 to 3 inches of plain foam shaving cream (the thicker the layer, the longer the experiment lasts). Smooth the top with a spoon.

3. Transfer the colored water drop by drop: dip a straw into the liquid, place a finger over the top end, and lift the straw out. Hold the straw over the shaving cream and lift your finger to deposit the colored water.

4. Continue adding drops

WHAT’S HAPPENING When a cloud (which is made of tiny drops of water) accumulates too many drops, it releases the excess moisture in the form of rain. The same thing happens to the shaving cream; at a certain point, it can’t absorb another drop. That’s when gravity steps in, pulling the colored water through the foam to create a downpour below.

FLIGHT OF FANCY Let your child’s imagination soar with a pair of pretty poster board wings she can decorate herself.

you will need • Tempera paint and brushes • 1 sheet (22- by 28-inch) white poster board • 1 sheet (22- by 28-inch) colored poster board • Glue stick • Clear packing tape • Hole punch • 2 (10-inch) lengths of ⅝-inch-wide fold-over elastic

1. Have your child paint the white poster board. Let the paint dry.

3. Trace the wings onto the back of the painting. Draw a line about ½ inch in from the tracing, then cut out the shape along that line.

Glue the pieces together and let them dry.

4. Hold the wings up to your child’s back and draw a light pencil mark just above each shoulder, then add a second mark about 3 inches below. For extra durability, adhere clear packing tape over each of the pencil marks, then punch holes through them.

5. Knot an end of one length of the elastic.

Starting from the back, thread the other end through the bottom hole and out the top. Securely knot the end and trim any excess. Repeat with the other side.

THE GRUB These chuck wagon–inspired dishes evoke a meal cooked over an open fire, but they’re easily whipped up in the kitchen.

1. SPEEDY CHILI CON CARNE In a large pot, brown 2 pounds lean ground beef over medium-high heat. Chop 3 garlic cloves, an onion, and a green pepper, then add them to the pot and cook until softened. Stir in 2 teaspoons chili powder, a 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes, 2 cups chicken stock, and a can each of kidney and pinto beans.

From a can of chipotle in adobo, add a chopped chili and a tablespoon of sauce. Cook the chili for

30 minutes on mediumlow, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Serve it with toppings, such as shredded cheese, sliced scallions, and diced tomato, and corn on the side.

2. SKILLET S’MORES Preheat the broiler.

Pour a 12-ounce bag of semisweet chocolate chips into a 9-inch ovenproof skillet. Add ¼ cup milk, then stir the mixture on the stovetop over medium-low heat until the chips are melted,

about 3 minutes. Top the chocolate with a layer of marshmallows. Place the skillet under the broiler for a minute or two, watching it carefully, until the marshmallows turn golden brown. Serve it with graham crackers and spoons for scooping (be sure to warn kids not to touch the skillet while it’s hot).

within walking distance of my office, I thought taking a class there would be a perfect way to get some exercise.

Having done flow yoga, I figured I’d do a few sun salutations on my lunch break, then pull on my street clothes afterward. But, um, no.

In the studio, it was 102 degrees— I could hardly breathe. This was my introduction to hot yoga, done in a super-heated room to improve the body’s flow of blood and oxygen. I was entirely too stubborn to get up and walk out, so I just sat there on the mat I’d borrowed from a coworker, wondering how I was going to survive.

(It didn’t help that all the other women there looked like Greek goddesses, with rock-hard glutes.)

We started, and the first five minutes were great. I was breathing, I was planking and warrior-posing like a champ. I thought, This is easier than I expected! Then I bent over into the downward-dog pose, and the room started spinning. After I went into the air-conditioned lobby and sat down in the middle of the floor, someone handed me an electrolyte drink and said, “Drink it. You’ll feel better.” And in a few minutes I did. I went back into that room and I rocked out (meaning, I tried every move and didn’t die).

At the end of the class, with lights dimmed, we all rested on our mats while the instructor came around and rubbed lavender oil on our heads and put cold rags over our faces. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Automobiles are banned on the island (pronounced “Mack-i-naw”), so the park itself is a kind of Eden, accessible only by ferry and traversable by foot, bike, horseback, and horse-drawn carriage.

You have to be pretty special to lure folks inside from some of the most breathtaking scenery in the nation, but the Monterey Bay Aquarium has been doing just that for 30 years. Maybe that’s because the aquarium has gone out of its way to bring its eye-popping marine dwellers eyeball-toeyeball with visitors in such exhibits as Open Sea, where sharks, sea turtles, bluefin tuna, and vast, glittering schools of sardines sweep past a 90-foot window. We’re not at all surprised that families described it with words such as “fantastic,” “engaging,” “colorful,” “amazing,” and “majestic.”

Where else can you find a living coral reef, a mummified cat, the Hope Diamond, and the cast of a prehistoric human (Lucy) named after a Beatles song all under one roof and free of charge? With thousands of items— from dinosaur skeletons to antique pottery to live butterflies—and interactive experiences designed just for kids, the museum invites repeat visits. In fact, one family from Georgia wrote: “We spent a week going back every day in order to see everything.”

It’s nothing less than the history of flight, from gliders to spaceships, which may explain why so many families said they love this museum.

With the exception of casual restaurant chains, respondents rated only nominees within their own region (Northeast, South, Midwest, or West). Scores are based on a 100-point scale, calculated to the hundredth place, then rounded off for easier reading. Winners required a minimum number of votes to qualify.

Use an oiled chopstick to pierce a channel in a marshmallow bunny, then insert a straw and serve with milk.

2 CANDY CADDIES Here’s how to recycle yogurt cups into bowls; you can tuck a place card between the ears as a sweet way to mark seats at your Easter table. To make one, start with a clean 32-ounce yogurt cup (look for a white cup with a label that can be removed). Apply a cutting guide using 1-inch-wide masking tape: adhere a strip at the bottom edge, then add two vertical strips, about ½ inch apart, for the ears. With sharp scissors, cut away the container’s top rim (an adult’s job), then cut along the guide with child-size scissors. Round the tops of the ears. Peel off the tape and add eyes with a permanent marker.

3 WAITER, THERE’S A HARE IN MY LUNCH Add some Easter love to the kids’ lunch boxes by creating rabbit shapes with a cookie cutter from slices of white and wheat breads, then mixing them up in sandwiches (we gave each rabbit a black sesame seed eye). On the side, serve mini versions of a bunny’s fave food: use a toothpick to pierce holes in baby carrots and insert parsley stems. We also shaped cuke slices with a small cutter.

RICKRACK ATTACK Festoon your fiesta with this garland made from simple shapes. Cut circles and ovals (craft punches get this done ultra fast), plus elongated oval pieces for the ears.

Use glue dots to attach the ears to the circle backs. Draw the eyes.

Adhere the eggs and the bunny heads to a long length of rickrack, using more glue dots. Tie or tack above your table, in a window, or wherever your home could use a little bunny style.

1 GET-THE-MESSAGE EGG Look in magazines for terms related to Easter or springtime and clip them out (or customize an egg for each family member, choosing words to describe personalities and interests). Apply a glue stick to the backs of the clipped words, then smooth them onto an egg.

In a glass measuring cup, mix 1 cup cool water with 20 drops food coloring and 2 teaspoons white vinegar. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt 1 tablespoon margarine (use the stick type). Stir it into the dye. With tongs, quickly dunk an egg in and out of the mixture three times, then let it soak 3 to 5 minutes. Remove it and let it dry.

Gently rub away any margarine with a paper towel. Tester note: We found that different egg, dye, and margarine brands produce varied marbling effects. All turned out lovely!

Stack a few layers of tissue paper, then punch dots with a hole punch. Separate the layered dots.

Working in sections, apply a glue stick to a dyed egg, then roll it in the dots or dab them on with a glue-sticked finger.

Place an egg on a bottle cap inside a wide, flat-bottomed 8- or 10-ounce glass. Make the dye solution: to ½ cup boiling water, add 1 teaspoon white vinegar and 40 drops food coloring.

Carefully pour the mixture along the inside of the glass until a quarter of the egg is covered. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Next, carefully add clear warm water, again pouring it along the inside of the glass, until the egg is half submerged. Let it sit 3 minutes. 1 In a large bowl, toss together all the ingredients for the waffles except the eggs, then stir in the eggs until well blended.

2 Coat a waffle iron with cooking spray and heat it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Ladle on ½ cup of the waffle mixture (the amount may vary depending on the size of your iron).

Cook until set and crispy, about 7 minutes. Repeat with the remaining batter.

FOR THE MAPLE SAUCE: 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth ½ cup maple syrup 2 tablespoons lemon juice 3 teaspoons Dijon mustard Pinch of pepper Whisk together the ingredients in a medium saucepan and place over high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat to mediumhigh, and simmer uncovered until reduced by half, about 7 minutes.

FOR THE WAFFLES: 1½ cups flour 1 tablespoon finely chopped rosemary 1½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper

1 In a large bowl, stir together the first five ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk. Combine the two mixtures and stir until well blended. The batter will be thick.

2 Coat a waffle iron with cooking spray and heat it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Ladle on ⅓ cup batter (the amount may vary depending on the size of your iron). Cook until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Repeat with the remaining batter. Serve each waffle topped with one quarter of the spinach and rotisserie chicken and a drizzle of the maple sauce.

This collection of self-portraits is from a trip to Tom’s Farms in Corona, California, which has a petting zoo, restaurants, shops, and a nice, grassy picnic area. My friend Jessica and I visit it often with our kids.

(Mine are Stella, age 9, on the far left, and Lucy, 7, in the center.) We usually bring along art supplies, and on this day, the children drew their faces.

When they finished, the kids thought each other’s portraits were hilarious but were quite serious about their own drawings. We loved seeing how they pictured themselves.
