A very successful Duck Race took place on Easter Monday. The sun was shining, the weather very promising, the crowds gathered and at 2 o'clock 400 yellow ducks were launched at Pot Nore Bridge.

There was great excitement as they swirled around and then some shot off downstream taking advantage of the river currents. Gina Quest and Paul Feakins-Taylor guided the leaders safely around the river weed to the awaiting crowds at Marsh Lane Bridge. With a slower running river this year, and much river weed, it was 49 minutes for the leading ducks to complete the course!

Tony Loten waited with baited breath, with his net, to retrieve the winner. Spectators were rewarded for their patience with refreshments served on The Green. Hook a Duck and Table Skittles were also available as extra entertainment.

It took another hour and 10 minutes for remainder of the ducks to complete the course! Helen Spilsted and Jenny Quest were convinced that the tail enders just wanted to rest and sunbathe amongst the weed rather than complete the race!!!!

Another afternoon of fun done, looking forward to next year's 25th Anniversary!

Lavant Primary School Samba, Samba... all about the different Samba instruments before learning to play them. Getting into the carnival vibe the children then learnt some different Samba rhythms.

Woodpecker Class enjoyed a rather loud but highly enjoyable morning when they took part in a Samba Workshop.

Very possibly you have never heard of dyspraxia or met anyone who has it. You can be born with it or develop it due to a brain injury.

And I have it. So, how does it affect me? I trip over stuff, walk like I'm drunk, forget things, struggle socially, injure myself regularly, have poor organisational skills and poor spatial awareness. I can't ride a bike or swim. I can however think outside the box and be creative. We’re not all the same. Wouldn't change it for the world.

Lavant WI Happy shepherds and ruby chocolate...

At our April meeting the President, Elaine Mallett, welcomed the speaker Bill Avenell who gave a lively illustrated talk entitled “Why Was the Shepherd Delighted”? Bill explained that he had always been interested in the mixture of science and superstition. We have all grown up listening to weather lore handed down over generations but how much of this is accurate?

By the time this is being distributed we will have held our most recent coffee morning, courtesy of Elizabeth O’Hea. We will be baking cakes for the Lavant Fete which is on Saturday 15th June. Then we have our July coffee morning, a Clinique make-up demonstration, a visit to Gilbert White’s garden and the August garden party to look forward to. Roll on the summer…

The President announced that on 26th June the National WI would lobby MP’s at Westminster regarding its concerns about climate change. A very topical debate.

There is a forthcoming meeting to study our historic photograph albums because there is a need to identify the people in the pictures before they are sent to the archives at WSCC via our West Sussex Federation.

Lavant Parish Council Pook Lane development deferred...

On Thursday 10th May, councillors attended the SDNPA Planning Committee meeting in Midhurst in order to present our concerns about the planned housing development at the top of Pook Lane. In the short time available for councillors to speak, we hoped to influence the committee with regards to two key aspects, namely the layout/boundary treatments around the affordable housing, and parking.

Other speakers focused on the housing mix, treatment of the Devils Ditch and energy conservation.

It would seem the Committee were listening and the application has now been deferred in order to allow an opportunity to come to mutually agreeable solution on the layout design concerns. Other matters will eventually become subject to a number of imposed conditions that should see many of our concerns allayed. We will work closely with the developer and SDNPA to bring this to an ultimately successful fruition hopefully in the not too distant future. The associated development of a new football field has yet to be formally reviewed by CDC.

The LVTF team continue with the maintenance at the Churchmead Playground.

We will shortly be replacing the seats and chains on the toddler swings, which have become worn and split.

The opinions of you and your children will be vital in determining the future of the playground, which will need replacing almost in its entirety in the next 3-5 years. Do you want to maintain it in the future? What equipment should be provided? How are we going to raise the money that might be needed?

Please come along to the Playground Party on Sunday 8th September and fill in a survey. The longer term future of the playground is in your hands.

Councillor Vacancy - we still have one vacant spot on the Council - if you are interested in getting involved, please do get in touch. It’s interesting and rewarding work.

As yet, there is no further news on the proposed Eastmead site development.

Disappointingly, there was little enthusiasm for the Lavant’s Out & About Day on 28th April.

The weather wasn’t great so perhaps that explained it. Nonetheless, the organisers had great fun trying out the Bikeability BMX bikes around the short track they’d set up and ate lots of luscious cakes. Not to be deterred, the bike races might make another appearance at next year’s 25th Anniversary Duck Race.

Month of Roses...

Having enjoyed the Annual Plant Sale last month and bought our garden and allotment plants, we can now look forward to colourful and productive gardens potentially with lots of entries in the Annual Flower Show. This will be held on Saturday August 3rd at Lavant Memorial Hall. All of the necessary information about the different classes, how to enter and advice on showing can now be found on our website www.lavanthortsoc.org.uk This month’s meeting on Wednesday June 12th will be a talk by Roger Hirons, otherwise known as The Plant Doctor, entitled “Steps to make your Garden Less Work”. Roger says that he is keen to help us to get our gardens to work for us instead of us feeling that we work for them !

Our Annual Garden visit takes place place on July 3rd, when those who have bought their tickets will be visiting The Savill Garden, Windsor Great Park.

Please note that there is no monthly meeting during July .

Shading on greenhouses will help keep temperatures down. Ideally they should be kept below about 25-27C (77-81F).

Continue to plant summer bedding plants in pots and borders, and water regularly to help plants establish quickly .

Roses should be at their best this month. Frequent deadheading will keep the plants tidy and help to encourage more flowers. Tie in new stems of climbing and rambling roses horizontally to encourage more flowers.

The Sussex Wildlife Trust Deadly Nightshade - by Michael Blencowe “A poison bouquet to strike him down” convulsions and a heartbeat so furious that it June 16th is Bloomsday, a celebration of the life of James Joyce, whose novel Ulysses follows Leopold Bloom’s escapades on that June date in 1904. Throughout Ulysses, Joyce uses flowers to symbolize romance and the lure of the exotic. Aside from fornication Joyce also tackles expiration, hallucination and urination. Let’s Walk Picnic time - fish paste anyone?

Have you had those walking boots out? If not, or even if you are a regular walker, it would be lovely to see you.

After several walks away from the village, we have decided to stay nearer to home this month with a walk up the Trundle and, if there is interest, over the other side to Charlton. I am planning for us to have a picnic tea at the top with each walker contributing to the tea. We will walk on Sunday 2nd June, leaving the Village Green War Memorial at 2.30pm. It will have some uphill stretches, but the paths are good, in the main. I will be the leader this month so any questions to me, please.

Annual PCC Meeting Notes Sunday 28th April 2019 at 11.35am The Rector, as Chairman, opened the meeting with a prayer. In attendance – 48 parishioners.

It was unanimously agreed to adopt the Annual Report and Financial Statement.

5. CHURCHWARDEN’S REPORT

1. MINUTES. The minutes of the APCM meeting held on 22 April 2018 were formally approved and signed.

2. ELECTION OF CHURCHWARDENS, PCC MEMBERS and DEANERY SYNOD

The wardens summarised the work that had taken place in both churches throughout the year. This included work on the electrical wiring at St Nicholas together with PAT testing of all electrical equipment. Repairs to the boiler pumps at St

Marathon Efforts You may remember that we had a coffee morning here in March to try and help Caroline Duff get enough money together to run for the Haemophilia Society.

She was running in memory of her husband, Paul, who died very suddenly in August last year, at the age of 52.

We went up to London to support Caroline, and our son-in-law, Sean, who was pacing her. Caroline finished in just under 5 hours, which was really amazing.

Funeral Service held in St Mary’s church on 30th April 2019 followed by committal at Chichester Crematorium.

INTERMENTS The cremated remains of Marjorie BEADON who died on 19th November 2017 aged 96 years, were laid to rest on 10th April 2019 in the existing plot alongside the Memorial path at St Mary’s with those of her husband, Capt Johnny BEADON. The cremated remains of David Bruce PAILTHORPE who died on 21st September 2018, aged 98 years, were laid to rest in the existing plot alongside the Memorial path at St Mary’s with those of his wife Rene PAILTHORPE. On Good Friday each year, the young members of our Junior Church and children from the village, meet in St Nicholas’ church for a morning of art and craft activities associated with Easter. This Easter Garden made that

morning formed part of the decorations in St Mary’s and was much admired at the Family Communion service

on

Easter Day It is currently still on display in the church, where it will stay until Pentecost. At the end of the session the happy group (and parents) consumed quite a lot of Hot Cross buns.
