Well I think its fair to say we are officially now in Autumn, the dark mornings and evenings are upon us. Leaves are falling from the trees but all is not lost as yet again there is something to keep us entertained once again…. Walks, Fayres, Wreath Making, Talks! Think there is something for everyone coming up, but don’t take our word. Have a read and see what takes your fancy….

The Rector’s Letter A season of remembrance Jesus was asked a question about the resurrection. It was the Jewish law that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, then the man was duty bound to marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. So, the story goes like this. There were seven brothers, the first married and died childless, then the second, and then the third married her and so on in the same way; all seven died childless. Finally the woman died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.

When someone we love has died then it leaves us with much loss and sadness, and sometimes many questions. One such question might be ‘where is he or she now?’, or ‘what is heaven?’ and possibly also ‘whose wife/husband will she/he now be?’ Jesus answered these questions. He told us that getting married was something which we do on earth in our timeframe here. But when we have died we are ‘like angels in heaven’. This stretches our minds, but it reminds us that heaven is beyond what we can comprehend—it is a reality but it is also a very different reality from what we know now. And Jesus tells us that God is not God of the dead but of the living—our lives once passed on earth enter a new living in the profound love of God. We have two particular opportunities in November to remember those who have died. Saturday 2nd November is All Soul’s Day. On this day all are invited to St Mary’s for this service where we can take the opportunity to give thanks for the lives of those we love, but who are no longer with us.

Whether we have been recently bereaved or not, we all have family and friends who have died which we would like in some way to remember in a fitting way.

Sunday 10th November is Remembrance Sunday. We gather at the village green for an act of remembrance and then continue in St Mary’s for the remembrance service. This is a way in which we can give thanks for the service that men and women have given to this country and have given their lives in that service. Some people will have family and friends who have lost their lives in armed conflict. However, the opportunity is given to us all to remember such sacrifices in this collective act of remembrance. It is clearly an important thing that we should do—lest we forget.

Lavant Memorial Hall Past vs Present...

This is a Nostalgic month for me, because it was in 1969 that I joined the Committee of the Hall as a representative of the Football Club, to see whether I could persuade someone to build better changing rooms for the players. I have enjoyed the twists and turns, and ups and downs of the last fifty years and it has been a privilege to play a part in the continuing success of the Hall. Little did Ethel Whale and Harry Bleach know, when they joined the first Committee in 1921, before they were married, that a son of theirs would play a big part in the future. Harry lost two brothers in the first war and therefore had a vested interest in the building, and I am pleased to have carried on the connection. The previous long serving member was Canon Buckwell who served the Hall for just over 40 years. I hope I have not finished yet.

The security lights have been fitted so you do not have to remember to turn flick the switch anymore. There has been a hold up on the P.A. and projector but hopefully soon it will be installed. The main drains have been causing concerns and we now have a second opinion on what is necessary, so plans are ongoing.

Big Event of the month will be on Saturday 23rd in the afternoon when a lot of the Village organisations come together with a twofold purpose of raising some funds, whilst giving you the opportunity to buy some early Christmas gifts for your friends and relations. It really is a lovely social occasion.

Please keep using the Hall. It will not be long before you will be able to see the full diary as Jenny is working hard to get it all submitted on line so you can see the availability.

Lavant C.E. Primary School New Beginnings...

Our new Reception children have settled in very well to life with us at Lavant C.E.Primary School. They are a lovely, friendly bunch. We have had such fun learning about Harvest. We picked apples from our school trees and made apple pies to take home. They were yummy!

We also enjoy walking to feed the chickens. We collect the eggs and cook with them. We are trying to create as many different dishes using eggs as possible.

Lavant WI Exercising of minds and bodies…

The President, Elaine Mallett, welcomed the speaker Juliette OHea, a Chartered Physiotherapist, who got us exercising our minds and bodies. With 25 years experience in Rheumatology and with arthritis herself, she shared some hot tips on why regular exercise and good posture is so important, particularly as we age.

With the aid of resistance bands and soft balls in both sitting and standing positions, we were shown a variety of exercises to strengthen and mobilise our muscles and joints. Juliette runs exercise classes in Chichester and offers a free taster class for anyone wanting to give it a try. Her website www.arthritisfirst.co.uk has all the details.

Our speaker next month (Tuesday 15th October 2019) will be Harry Vinsome, guitarist and singer, who will entertain us with songs from the 1950’s to the present day.

Let’s Walk West Dean Saturday 9th November - West Dean Recent walks have been further afield so this month we are staying in the local area, following one of our own maps. We will leave the Village Green War Memorial, as usual, at 2pm on Saturday 9th November and walk up to the tea rooms at West Dean and back (about 5 miles), with a stop for a cuppa. Chichester Country Music Club celebrated its 45th anniversary with a concert at the Lavant Memorial Hall on Friday 13 September. The club was launched by Tony and Hazel Bleach on 13 September 1974 and meets twice a month alternating between the Lavant Memorial Hall and the North Mundham Village Hall. Lavant Parish Council Finally...

After what has seemed like eons in the waiting, at last we have approval from SDNPA for the planning application for the housing development for Pook Lane.

We now have to wait for CDC to catch up for their approval of the new football site.

Then the ownership of the land can be transferred to the developer. Once all the legal agreements are in place, construction will be able to start, probably towards early Summer 2020.

We were very pleased to see so many families attend the recent Playground Party and even more pleased to now have nearly 60 Playground Surveys completed and returned. These will help determine what types of equipment you wish to see in the Playground going forward when it is refurbished. Those of you who kindly volunteered to help decide what will go into the playground will be contacted very soon, to start this process off.

Well, if Armageddon is the price I have to pay for a glimpse of one of these beautiful birds then bring it on.

Lift Dahlias after the first frost, clean off the tubers and store in dry compost in a cool frost- free place .

Cut down faded perennials and mulch around the plants to protect the roots from winter cold but also to improve the soil structure.

Gather up and bin fallen leaves of roses affected by blackspot to help prevent the problem returning next year.

Keep lawns leaf free and compost or bag up the leaves to make leaf mould ready for use this time next year.

Now is a good time to take root cuttings of perennials including Phlox, Oriental poppies and Verbascum.

Pot up some tender herbs to bring inside for winter use.

Bare-root hedging, roses and trees and shrubs should be planted this month provided the ground is not waterlogged .

Don’t forget the wildlife which adds so much to our enjoyment of our gardens.

Provide additional foodmand shelter for birds and other creatures and make fresh water available to them. Keep bird feeders hygienic by cleaning out and scrubbing them regularly.

Lavant Short Mat Bowls Club Come and have a go...

Our season will be starting shortly when our Red team, in County Division 2 start their campaign with a long trip to play Mannings Heath in their opening league match. We then have a regular run of league matches through the rest of the month before the match between our A and B teams in the County KO Cup. Despite the quiet time from a competitive point of view we are well into our regular Thursday evening roll-up sessions and would welcome anyone who is interested in trying out the game to come along, see what it is all about and to have a go. We are at Lavant Hall on a Thursday evening from 7pm.

Hair-raising fun kicks off this year’s charity fundraising at Chichester’s Oakwood School Children at Chichester’s Oakwood School have come up with a fun way to start raising money and awareness for their two nominated charities this year. They are learning to braid hair thanks to local salon, KC Hair Boutique, at a cost of £5 each, with all proceeds going towards The OHMI Trust, which pioneers the development and adaptation of musical instruments for people who are physically disabled, and Sage House – Dementia Support, based in Tangmere.

Each year, the pupils and their families vote for national and local charities to receive support from the school, with children thinking of creative ways to raise funds. Special events have included Design-a-Bug House, cake sales and photography competition.

The children have presented cheques to representatives (pictured) from last year’s three adopted nominated charities. Sussex Wildlife Trust and Brent Lodge Bird and Wildlife Trust each received £2,236.71 and Hampshire’s Elizabeth House, the UK’s largest provider of education services for deaf children, received £2,888.96 from proceeds of the Friends of Oakwood Ball.

“Our links with the local community and charities are very close to our everyone’s hearts here at Oakwood,” Headteacher Clare Bradbury, said. “We welcome visits from the charities for children to find out more about their work and are pleased to have built strong and lasting relationships with the community. This includes our friends at a number of local care homes who the children often visit, and whose residents are invited to join us each year for events such as our Summer Tea Party, Harvest Festival and Community Christmas.

“Oakwood will host Funtington Community Christmas again this year for all who would like to join us on Christmas Day. Please contact the school office on 01243 575 209 if you are interested in volunteering or joining us.

She added, “We are so proud of our pupils for leading our fundraising and for nominating more wonderful charities for the school to support this year. Everyone is very glad to encourage their fundraising efforts – and of course the cake bake sale is always a real treat as we all love to eat cake!”

St. Nicholas Church Harvest Flower Display If you didn't get a chance to see the amazing Harvest flower display at St. Nics you missed yet another spectacular array of Autumn colours combined with the usual pumpkins (Thank you Mike Kingsford), and the harvest loaf.

PCC Notes Tuesday 17th September 2019 at 7.30pm The meeting was opened in prayer and chaired by the Rector, David Jarratt. The Minutes of the PCC meeting held on 16 July 2019 were formally approved and signed.

1. Matters arising Card reader/card payments. The unit has been ordered and delivery imminent and will be in use as soon as possible.

2. Safeguarding. Training of PCC members and all leaders and helpers is ongoing and will be followed up with DBS checks.

3.

Treasurer’s report. It was reported that outgoings are still slightly more than income but we are able to cover planned expenditure for the next two or three years, however this is not sustainable in the longer term. Whilst we can currently meet our Parish Share payments, a review and discussion is planned for the next meeting when further financial figures are available.

4.

Churchwarden’s report. St Nic’s Project. The funding consultant has made an initial enquiry with the Heritage Fund to see if a further bid would be successful; a reply to which is expected shortly.

Quinquennial Inspection of St Nic’s. This is a five yearly inspection of the fabric of the church. A summary report has been received and there does not appear to be anything too major requiring attention. A full report is awaited.

Health & Safety policy. This was adopted, a copy of which will be available in both Churches. A personal safety plan is being drafted to suit our needs and that of the Church.

7.

Lavant Mission Statement. A discussion took place as to what the wording of our mission statement means and we were asked to reflect and describe in three words what the church means to us, its people and how we can share our faith with the wider community. It was agreed that further discussion on this matter will take place at the next meeting.

8.

Outreach activities/events. The PCC will be having a stall at the Hall Christmas Fayre on the 23 November and on the 30 November there will be an evening event entitled ‘Desert Island Discs’ further details to follow. The decision on which charities to support for this year’s Christmas Appeal has still to be decided.

9.

Any other business. Wildflower area at St Nic’s Churchyard. A request has been made to sow a wildflower area along the roadside perimeter wall of the churchyard. A National Park ecologist has completed a survey of the area and has found that the bank is already rich in a number of species. After discussion it was agreed that it could go ahead with the proviso that what is done is sustainable, identifiable and that liaison with CDC who maintain the Churchyard takes place.

Church Ride and Stride

A dozen cyclists and three walkers spent a lovely Saturday visiting over thirty churches in the Chichester area. The cyclists set off from St Nicholas' and headed out to Funtington where there was much preparation in hand for their harvest festival the next day. We then made out way down to Fishbourne (nice refreshments!) and then along to Apuldram Church. Apuldram has recently had a parish room added on which has been done very sympathetically and is well worth a visit. All of the churches in the City were then visited including those which are no longer churches such as the Jade Garden on the Hornet and Henry Adam's Agents to name just two. St Mary's Almhouses were having an open day. It is a rare treat to be able to visit their chapel which also incorporates some of the residents of the almshouse! A picnic was held in Priory Park with the walkers before we then finished visiting the last few churches. Back up to Lavant with Carol and Tony going beyond the call of duty by later on taking on West Dean Church. Around £650 was raised in sponsorship which is shared between Lavant Churches and the Sussex Historic Churches Trust. Many thanks to all who sponsored and took part.
