We are now scarily well into 2019 already.

The Lavant has finally risen and is flowing nicely. If you look closely at the cover photo, you can see tiny twig buds forming - spring is on its way, even if we can’t easily see it. The daffodils outside St Nic’s are likely to be flowering by the time this reaches you and before we know it Easter will be upon us.

Those of you with green fingers will no doubt have been poring over the seed catalogues and will be itching to get going in the garden and greenhouse. Fingers crossed for more predictable weather patterns over the coming months.

Whatever your plans for 2019, don’t forget all the local events and give them your full support.

Lavant Friendly Club A bumper edition...

On November 11th the club was entertained by a “Victorian Lantern Show”. The slides were from the late 1800s and featured East Sussex, Bosham and Chichester showing how people used to live a very different life from today. There were moving slides of a skipping girl, a jumping clown and changing patterns - all moved by hand. Something a little different. A game of biscuit bingo, a nearly new clothes sale, raffle and refreshments completed the evening.

On December 11th members went to the pantomime “Cinderella” at The Kings Theatre in Southsea, which was really good entertainment and well acted.

The costumes were beautiful and the dance troupes were made up of children and adult ballet dancers. The most hilarious scene was to the song of “A Partridge in a Pear Tree”. Five men performing the sequence of numbers and as the song progressed they got in a bit of a muddle, one fell over and was unable to get up as he was laughing so much, one went to help him, slipped and grabbed one of the stage curtains which fell down, showing the workers back stage preparing the next scene. The look of surprise on their faces as they were suddenly facing a laughing audience!

Another curtain was lowered and that came down crooked before it hit the stage. One of the actors that fell over just sat at the edge of the stage and spoke to the audience. He said “I have never had that happen to me before” which caused more laughter. What a great show.

On December 7th the club’s Christmas Party was attended by about 50 members. A lovely party with a meal prepared by Mrs Hazel Bleach and her helpers. This year included fancy hats instead of crackers - a great success. A small present was given to everybody and Mr Bleach provided the music and several carols, which we all joined in. There was a large raffle with 43 prizes, including two food hampers.

A very enjoyable afternoon.

THE JANE FARROW LEGACY OF LOVE Set up by Ted Farrow in memory of his wife, The Jane Farrow Legacy of love is a fund to provide food for families in Kleinpoort, South Africa. It all began back in 1997 (?) when Ted and Jane went on holiday to Kleinpoort, a small village in South Africa, and began to help the local

schoolchildren with shoes, clothes and food. For about 20 years they holidayed in Kleinpoort and continued to do what they could to provide aid to the school.

With the steady increase school numbers, they began to re-think how they could best help the local community.

Locals advised them to target their aid to the elderly, who were living in tin huts and deserted shacks, many of them looking after children whose parents had left the village in search of work. Giving several months food supply to the 12 most needy would greatly ease their burdens – and also benefit the children.

It was Jane’s dying wish that Ted should carry out this work. To date he has arranged two “food drops”, and plans to do one annually from now on. “I felt that I had to honour Jane’s last wishes,” Ted told us. But having paid for it out of his own pocket, he is now asking for some help to fund this very worthy project.

“The results were amazing. If you read the thank-you notes I received, you will understand why I must continue. This is where you come in. The food drops go to twelve families. The food costs quite a significant outlay and I ask for your help so that I can continue my work. Ted pays for

his own air fare and expenses: “Every penny that you give will be spent on the families; nothing will disappear on administration.”

To help support the project, a Fundraising evening will be launched at St. Nicholas’ Church, Lavant on Saturday March 9th 2019 at 7.15pm. African food will be served; tickets £7.50. Phone: 01243 527242 for details.

Lavant WI Jiving and shuffling...

On 20th November members met for their Annual Meeting, at which a new committee is elected. The current committee were unanimously re-elected for a further one year term: Officers are President - Elaine Mallett, Secretary - Barbara Garrett and Treasurer Muriel Winter.

The County Centenary Lunch will take place at Avisford Park Hotel on 31st January and will be attended by several of our members.

The AGM of the National Federation of WIs will take place in Bournemouth on 5th June 2019 and our President will represent us.

On 5th December members met for their annual Christmas Lunch, this year at the Chichester Park Hotel. A scrumptious lunch was had by all and then on 12th December, the President, Elaine Mallett, welcomed members to the regular members’ meeting and introduced the special entertainment Catra, a women’s barbershop quartet. Their lively entertainment included such songs as Java Jive, Scarlet Ribbon, San Francisco Bay Blues, The Camel Shuffle and ended with Christmas Carols. An excellent Christmas cake baked by Ros Hall was taken with tea.

games against random opponents and this year, after three games there were three unbeaten teams – our own, a team from Bognor and a team from Chobham Heath.

The Lavant team faced Bognor but could not manage a win so the Bognor team remained unbeaten with two games left.

The Chobham Heath team also lost and the Bognor team went on to win their final two games to remain unbeaten for the day and to take the trophy. A day enjoyed by all which raised over £300 for Memorial Hall funds.

As a consequence of our Parish Clerk’s move into an office space, kindly provided by Lavant Churches, an old Parish Minute Book was uncovered. The entries make for some intriguing reading.

Picture the scene it’s the 4th of April 1940, and outside Lavant Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain makes a speech. He states that Hitler had "missed the bus" by not taking advantage of Germany's military superiority over Britain at the beginning of the war.

However, on the 5th of April the Norwegian ambassador in Berlin warns of a German invasion and on the same day Britain starts mining Norwegian waters in anticipation.

But there is no need to be afeared by this unruly water as the problem would be brought to the next Parish Council meeting.

Another matter of great importance was the condition of the refuse dump (which) was raised by Mrs Bricket. Fortunately the Rector, Canon Selwyn Buckwell, and Mr James Goldie, the postmaster, promised to deal with the matter at the next Rural District Council meeting. In fact this latter issue was rather important as, during the war years, housewives would have to take most of their rubbish to the refuse dump one of which was by the Village Pound on Sheepwash.

There is a hint of the events occurring outside Lavant in the clerk’s instruction to write to Mr Taylor inviting him to explain ARP to Villagers later that month.

Meanwhile in Lavant A meeting is held in the Memorial Hall at 8 o’clock. 16 people are present. Oakwood School in Chichester brings festive cheer to the lonely this Christmas Oakwood School in Chichester opened its doors on Christmas Day to people in the local community – young or old – who would otherwise have spent the day alone.

College, Parklands Butchers and Southbourne Farm Shop, to name a few. Money raised was spent on transport, fresh produce, Christmas decorations and gifts for the guests.

The festive initiative saw the school team up with the organisers of the nearby Emsworth Community Christmas, which has grown significantly over the last three years. Oakwood were delighted to be able to offer another venue to allow the local event to expand to include Funtington Community Christmas as well.

Nearly 60 guests and volunteers were welcomed with canapés and festive drink, before enjoying a delicious traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings.

There was much joy and laughter, as everyone enjoyed festive fun, carol singing, music, presents and conversation with new friends before the day drew to a close at 4pm. Every guest went home with a box of gifts put together by Oakwood children and handed out by Santa.

In the run-up to the Christmas Day event, the Oakwood team was busy fundraising and had also set up a JustGiving page for anyone wishing to donate. In addition, local businesses generously gave to the event including Chichester Waitrose, Chichester
