Reflection #13 April 22-25 This week was little emotional. I found out that I have a student in my class that is self-harming. I had to report it to the school counselor so they could intervene with her. I felt so sad because she is actually a really talented and smart girl. A few weeks before I had to talk to her because she did not want to finish an oral presentation that she was doing extremely well on. All of a sudden she stopped and refused to give it. When I spoke to her, she opened up to me and told me how she felt and I was able to give her advice and just tell her how awesome she is. I did not know how much simple words would mean to her; she jumped and hugged me really tight but I didn’t know what was really going on until this week. I told the counselor I had been noticing odd behaviors from her. I gave her the example of the oral presentation, the haiku poem she wrote and even the song she had selected for the poetry project; it was all very alarming. But, it is my job as a teacher to report this kind of behavior for the better of my students. Other than that we were able to finish the oral presentations on poetry and gave a spelling test. We finished the week introducing prepositions and prepositional phrases. I was however surprised how the students that usually do bad in the class got it really fast and those students that are usually on top of the class they could not understand. I felt like it was opposite day but I did not let this bring me down. I kept finding ways and strategies to help them understand. However, we are still starting out so I know next week we will have more time to explain and more examples.
