NEW FOUNDATION MEMBERS
OL (1991)
As we reflect on the year 2022, I am thrilled to highlight two significant milestones that have greatly advanced our mission to support the education and well being of young people in our Lauriston community.
Firstly, we were delighted to open the Ullmer Sports and Wellbeing Centre, a state-of-theart facility that will provide Lauriston Girls’ School students with access to a range of world-class sporting and wellbeing amenities. This new Centre, made possible by the generosity of our donors through the It’s Her Turn campaign, is a testament to our commitment to promoting the physical health and wellbeing of young people, as well as supporting their academic and personal growth.
Secondly, I am thrilled to report on the enormous success of the inaugural Lauriston Giving Day, held on Thursday 9 June 2022. This 24-hour fundraising event brought together the Lauriston community in an extraordinary show of support for our new Foundation Scholarship.
On behalf of the Lauriston Foundation, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to our success in 2022. With your continued support, we look forward to building on these achievements and continuing to make a positive impact for every Lauriston girl, now and in the future.
As you read through the pages of this annual report, the support from all facets of our community is evident. Our donors,
alumnae, volunteers, staff, and partners have come together with a shared commitment to providing the best possible opportunities that will benefit Lauriston girls and the community for generations to come.
We are humbled by the outpouring of support received, and grateful for the importance that you place in educating girls. The Lauriston Foundation is committed to ensuring that every donation is used wisely and responsibly, and that every dollar invested in our Foundation is used to the greatest effect in supporting the future of our young women and our future as one of Australia’s leading schools.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the School and those it serves.
‘ We are humbled by the outpouring of support received, and grateful for the importance that you place in educating girls. ’
Tony Wagner of Harvard University has noted Seven Survival Skills required in C21st to manage tertiary studies and careers. While I believe that our Class of 2022 have well developed skills that they will continue to develop as they move into tertiary studies, I would suggest that these are skills which we foster in each student from the time she enters Lauriston Girls’ School.
Through their primary years of school and then when they begin studies in their chosen subject disciplines, our students develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving, being able to see problems from different angles and formulate their own solutions. These same skills are developed through the various co-curricular activities our students participate in.
It has been exciting for all of our students to participate in a broad range of co-curricular activities in 2022, including music, debating and public speaking, clubs and community service. I have very much enjoyed watching our girls as they enter our Ullmer Health and Wellbeing Centre for their PE lessons or a GSV competition game. Their pride in this new facility matches my own. There is considerable research that points to the importance of developing physical literacy in girls because they are less likely than boys to link sport and physical education to the development of life skills.
Collaboration and leadership building occur in the classroom and through the myriad opportunities offered to our students.
The Class of 2022 were excellent role models for our students in working collaboratively, not only in the classroom and co-curricular activities, but also in being inclusive and supportive of each other, in their studies and activities around the school. We want our girls to understand the value of getting to know each other and understanding the benefits of working with people who may not think in the same way as yourself.
Willingness to adapt to changes around them is very much part of the DNA of the Class of 2022 and indeed, all of our students. Their lives of our students, like the lives of every person around the world, changed as a result of the COVID pandemic. Our students responded effectively to change and relished their return to school and more normal activities.
Students need to be able to take initiative and contribute to the world, and the Class of 2022 has demonstrated this on countless occasions. From the Junior and Senior Schools, I observe the initiative of our students in participating in community service activities and contributing to many external organisations.
Curiosity and imagination are attributes that we want our students to maintain and develop. We are fortunate at Lauriston that many of our students can demonstrate their creativity through the Visual and Performing Arts, competitions ranging from writing to STEM activities, and through co-curricular activities. We are appreciative of the success our students achieve through such participation.
Our teachers give attention to the continued development of effective written and oral communication, and it is encouraging for all of us to know that our students can offer their perspective on a broad range of topics and freely communicate with us about what is important to them and propose different ways of doing things. Similarly, being able to access information assess its value is a priority.
We look towards each year with optimism and in 2022, we felt grateful to have our students, teachers and staff members return to School. We all enjoyed attending musical and drama performances once again. We celebrated the return to sport and the opening of the Ullmer Health and Wellbeing Centre. We were proud when our primary students were able to use the new adventure playground and test out the wonderful slide.
Our focus continues to be on the successful implementation of our strategic plans for the School and for Sport. We look forward to the formal opening of our Years 5 and 6 Centre and the completion of the Blairholme Early Learning Centre construction.
The Lauriston Foundation continues to support our vision for girls’ education. We continue to appreciate the generosity of our School community and the broader community. I believe wholeheartedly that it continues to be ‘the turn’ of our girls every day. Their contribution to our society at large is vital if we are to have a peaceful and sustainable future, and education is the foundation for their future lives.
‘ It has been exciting for all of our students to participate in a broad range of co-curricular activities in 2022, including music, debating and public speaking, clubs and community service. ’

As the backbone of the school’s past , present, and future, the Lauriston Advancement team is here to connect and support the vital activities and functions of our School. Every year we reach out to families, supporters and alumnae, to help them share their passions with the community and support the school.
The Lauriston Advancement team incorporates 5 functional areas working together to advance the School’s goals. The team works to ensure that Lauriston
remains at the forefront of educational excellence and innovation, and that it continues to provide an exceptional learning experience for girls.
I am delighted to share with you some reflections of 2022 from each member of the Advancement team. Through the pages of this report, you will read about the people who make Lauriston a School for Life, their commitment to a world-class education for girls, and the common bond of supporting Lauriston for future generations.
I joined the Advancement Office as an Advancement Associate mid-2022 after a decade in the Admissions Office where I had the privilege of assisting many of our current families with the enrolment of their daughter. I have been amazed and touched over the past 7 months to witness the generosity of our school community; in particular, the willingness of our current families to be actively engaged in the life of the school they have chosen for their daughter’s education.
With the public phase of the It’s Her Turn Campaign launching in 2018, we invited our school community to be part of the most exciting and ambitious capital works program in Lauriston’s history. It was important to provide our families with real and meaningful opportunities to make a contribution such as the purchase of a leaf or branch proudly bearing their name on the 120 Tree sculpture (now on display on the wall of the Ullmer Sports & Wellbeing Centre), sponsoring a seat in the Community Hub with a plaque
The Advancement team is grateful for the extraordinary support from the Lauriston community, Lauriston Foundation Board, Lauriston Foundation members and the School leadership team. To our new Foundation members we welcome you to the Lauriston Foundation, and thank you for helping deliver facilities and programs needed to enable Lauriston girls to reach their potential.

RHONDA COSGROVE Director of Advancement Advancement AssociateWelcoming new bequestors to the Elizabeth Kirkhope Circle was a real highlight of 2022. The annual luncheon at the RACV is now an established tradition, giving the bequest program at Lauriston high visibility and community recognition. It’s the pinnacle of the structured and innovative donor stewardship program focused on building strong emotional connections between the community and the School through personalised communications and relationships building.
Major School events in 2022 such as the opening of the Ullmer Centre and the EKC Annual Luncheon created opportunities to engage current and prospective bequestors directly with the School and presented unique moments to showcase
the future of Lauriston education. Such vision is a major inspiration to our Lauriston community to consider gifts in will and a real opportunity to imagine the impact these gifts will have on the future generations of Lauriston girls.
Frequent profiling of community members, particularly Old Lauristonians, is an important part of the stewardship program. It allows us to present personal success stories, to thank them for their generous support for the School as students, donors and bequestors, often spanning many generations, such as the story of the Best family profiled in the Lauriston Life in 2022.
Recognition of individual bequests increased in 2022 via events such as the EKC Annual Luncheon and Reunions, articles in the
Lauriston Life such as Judith Gregory’s bequest, Old Lauristonians’ e-newsletters, Schoolbox articles and social media posts effectively spreading the message about the value of these gifts.
Last year’s effective building of the network of prospective bequestors impacted directly and positively on fostering the culture of philanthropy and fundraising success of the School, with many of these community members making major donations to the annual 2022 scholarship appeal and the It’s Her Turn campaign.
On Monday 18 May, we invited Old Lauristonians whose children currently attend Lauriston, to a wonderful morning to participate in a large Intergenerational photograph – capturing the vast and growing generations of Lauristonians. 73 Old Lauristonians responded accepting the invitation for themselves and their children at Lauriston to attend. We estimate that 120 Old Lauristonians and their children participated in the final photograph. This included OL grandmothers of current students. Pastries were served and we also had a coffee cart. The tiered photograph was taken beneath the portraits in Irving Hall, and it was a terrific event.
The Lauriston Luncheon was held on Thursday 27 October 2022. This luncheon was the second luncheon held at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and we invited all alumnae, living in Victoria, who graduated 1972 and prior. The Class of 1972 celebrated their 50 Year Reunion at the luncheon and we were delighted that 2 full tables from this cohort attended. We also acknowledged milestone reunions for Class of 1967 (55 Years), 1962 (60 Years), 1957 (65 years) and 1952 (70 years). We had in total 89 attendees, including 14 staff and VIPs. We received 54 apologies. Elizabeth Tindall, Head of Music, arranged for three students to perform, and the incoming School Captains Holly Rice and Sophie Smith
presented at the event. We were thrilled that many cohorts were able to fill at least one table each. A highlight of the event was some Old Lauristonians who, accompanied by the grand piano, lovingly and robustly sang the “old” School Song. We received very positive feedback from attendees and we look forward to the 2023 Lauriston Luncheon which is to be held again at Kooyong on Thursday 26 October 2023. We also acknowledged the contribution funded by the Old Lauristonians’ Association, that subsidised the ticket prices for all attendees.
CATHERINE MCVEAN Alumnae Relations ManagerI wanted to do something a bit different than just display sports trophies. Therefore, for the cabinets in the entrance foyer of the Ullmer Centre, I put together replicas of Lauriston’s sports uniforms from early to mid-twentieth century. The uniforms stand in front of a collage of historical and modern photographs that represent then and now images of sport played at Lauriston.
I wanted natural rather than synthetic fabrics for the sports dresses. I purchased a navy-blue wool twill for the box pleated tunic of the 1920s, and a woven navy blue cotton for the 1950s sleeveless sports dress with a flared skirt. I was incredibly lucky that our Science Lab Technician, Sue Cartmell, was able to source patterns and sew the sports dresses. It took me visits to several fabric shops and then ringing Lauriston’s uniform suppliers, to locate suitable fabric for the dresses.
Sue Cartmell also assisted me with sourcing several of the other garments. I purchased the two shirts from an English company
that makes replicas of their public-school uniforms. The long-sleeved shirt that goes with the box pleated tunic, is made of Viyella fabric to produce that early twentieth century look. I have a modern woven cotton navy tie and the striped ribbon sewn up as a sash, to complete the early 1920s uniform. For the 1950s uniform, I also purchased an older style short sleeved white cotton shirt to go with the blue sports dress. Sue Cartmell put together a white woven cord belt with tassels to complete the mid-century sports uniform. I got a Sydney company to replicate the striped ribbon wrapped around Winifred Beecher’s 1922 hockey stick. This style of ribbon was used as a hatband on our early students’ straw boaters, and later for the sash worn over the box-pleated tunic. To reproduce the 1900s straw boater with the smaller rim I purchased French brand that took several weeks to arrive in Melbourne.
For the two side cabinets I wrote ten history panels, including topics as the origins of our sporting tradition, how the Irving sisters introduced hockey to independent girls’
schools in Melbourne, Lauriston’s changing sports uniform, and the origins of our house system. The graphic design for the panels was by Mark Collier of New Artworx. The history panels are set within blue laser cut acrylic frames, each with a sports motif such as a hockey stick and ball. The frames were designed by Andrew Gibson, Lauriston’s Art Technician and laser cut in our Fab Lab. Shinning silver sports trophies also adorn these cases.
When you next visit the Ullmer Centre, please do have a look at these displays that represent the history of sport at Lauriston.
LISL BLADIN ArchivistAs students returned to School for the start of Term 4, the new Ullmer Sports & Wellbeing Centre was ready to enjoy, marking a milestone moment in our School’s history. This first-class facility includes: the Yang Family and Walker Family multi-purpose courts, the Fathers of Lauriston Weights and Conditioning Studio, the Bridget Ball, Kate McKenzie and Claire McKenzie Ergo Studio with ergs and exercise bikes, and ample showers and changerooms. These new sports and learning facilities will benefit Lauriston girls and the wider community for generations to come.
There have been many members of the School community that have supported or been a part of this project for many years and their generosity and hard work was celebrated at our grand opening on Friday 14 October.
We especially thank the Ullmer family for their intergenerational commitment to Lauriston, to girls’ education, and for their incredible support. The It’s Her Turn campaign was established in 2017 to support Lauriston’s 10-year Masterplan and has been the most successful capital campaign in Lauriston’s history, recognised by independent schools across Australia as a pivotal change in philanthropy among independent girls’ schools. To date, It’s Her Turn has raised just shy of $4 million. We are
thrilled to have celebrated the opening of these new facilities across three days to celebrate this significant milestone in Lauriston’s history.
More than 300 supporters of the It’s Her Turn campaign attended the Grand Opening of the Ullmer Sports & Wellbeing Centre on Friday 14 October. The rain could not dampen the spirits of choristers, musicians and special guests eager to visit the completed building for the first time. For many, it was also the first opportunity to see their family name on the leaves of the Fig Tree sculpture, adorning the wall of the Ullmer Centre. Murrundindi welcomed all guests to country and played the didgeridoo before the building was

officially opened by Rick Ball, Chair of School Council (2014–2022), Claudette Leeming (OL 1991) current Chair of School Council, the Ullmer family, Australian Olympic Team representatives Kate Blamey (OL 2007), Jeni Lidgett-Danks (OL 1981) and Stephanie Moorhouse (OL 2005), and our 2022 and 2023 Sports Captains Isabel Bulach, Sasha Thompson, Sophie Moore, and Audrey Walker.
Three hundred and fifty parents and students attended the Family Opening on the afternoon of Monday 17 October. Students and parents enjoyed an afternoon tea before playing on the Adventure Tower,
watching our rowers train on the ergs, and cheering Lauriston’s Senior GSV Basketball teams from the new supporter seat area.
Nestled between the new Ullmer Sports & Wellbeing Centre and the new 5/6 Centre is the new Adventure Tower, complete with giant slide. The Adventure Tower sits alongside the new Agility Trail and Mini Games Space, reflecting the start of our students’ journey to Howqua.
We invited all students in years 3-6 for a sneak peek of the new Adventure Playground and held a raffle giving students the chance to be the first down the slide on Monday 10
October. More than 378 raffle tickets were sold with all funds going towards the It’s Her Turn campaign, further enabling the development of our new indoor and outdoor spaces. Congratulations to Lucy (5D) for being drawn in the raffle. She was awarded with the honour of being the first Lauriston student down the new Adventure Tower slide and was joined by her classmates and Chris Toms, Vice Principal, Head of Junior School.
We thank Kelvin Huang & Sylvia Mo and their family for supporting the development of the Adventure Tower, and their commitment to innovative outdoor play for our Junior School students.
Our inaugural Giving Day on 9 June was a one-day online fundraising movement where the Lauriston community came together to help fund two new Foundation Scholarships, with the first recipient to commence at Lauriston in Year 7, 2023.
With the generosity of our entire community, including our Giving Day leaders, we surpassed our philanthropic goal and raised $208,554 with an incredible 23% of our donors giving for the first time.
The Foundation Scholarships not only provide an opportunity for an individual to receive a high-quality education but through partnering with the family through the provision of a world-class education, they will radically change the lives of families and their communities too. This is consistent with Lauriston’s desire to be an inclusive, all-round School that embraces a wide variety of students from varied backgrounds, who
can add to the vibrancy and strength of our community.
The Foundation Scholarships provide full remission for tuition fees and will cover the following additional expenses:
• Purchase of textbooks and online programs used by the School
• A new laptop in Year 7 and Year 10
• Residential fee for the Year 9 Howqua year
• Provision of gear and equipment required for the Year 9 Howqua Year
• Camps at Year 7 and Year 8
• Local excursions
• Financial support to the applicant’s family for the purchase of School uniform items.
Congratulations to Andrews House who finished on the top of our House leaderboard. Our first Foundation Scholarship recipient will join Andrews House as a celebration of your support.

“In just 24 hours our Lauriston community has come together in such a wonderful way. Your donations will now change the lives of students from diverse backgrounds who would not otherwise have the chance to experience a Lauriston education.”
Alice Robinson (OL 1991), Chair, Lauriston Foundation
“I am so proud of our Lauriston community, and I’d like to thank you all for believing in providing an education for our girls. Scholarships mean so much to the young girls who come here and they help us to enhance and develop our core values. We celebrate the contribution that everyone makes to our School and to our wider community.”
Susan Just, Principal
The annual luncheon of the Elizabeth Kirkhope Circle (EKC), Lauriston’s bequest society, was a true celebration of the spirit, courage and generosity. As I welcomed everyone to the RACV Club I could not help but wonder how different the members of Lauriston’s community are in their life experiences but how splendidly similar they were in their outlooks on life.
Whether they were from the Silent Generation (the 1930s), are Baby Boomers or Millennials, their display of individuality, empathy, and how they embrace community and life with confidence, showcase the true and lasting values of Lauriston.
The courage displayed by the Irving sisters in Melbourne at the end of the 19th century, when life choices for women were constrained by their gender, class, financial resources and social structure of the colonial society, is fundamental in underpinning what a Lauriston education is.
Some of the first generations of Lauriston graduates entered universities in the early 1900s, with Dorothy Andrews being the first university graduate in 1916. The number of Lauriston girls completing university study
continued to grow and they were ready to shape the change in the status of women in the early 20th century.
The societal changes in Australia at that time contributed to the elevation of women to the status of citizens able to contribute to the public sphere of work and politics. And culture too – I am sure our girls enjoyed My brilliant career, the first novel of the Australian author Miles Franklin, which was published in 1901, just before Lauriston was founded.
I love listening to the stories of our older bequestors and see the smiles on their faces when they share their memories of School days – wearing hats and gloves, learning in “Little Lauriston” (classes for girls and boys from 4 to 7 years old started in 1944 and closed in 1957), or collecting 2000 eggs for the annual hospital appeal in 1962 as part of the Social Service Program. They can’t forget square dancing too! The Grand Square Dance in the Hawthorn Town Hall in 1953 attracted 500 dancers, and Mrs Kirkhope was known to join the dancers herself! But back to 2022. The EKC luncheon is a celebration of those in our community who had and have the foresight and generosity to leave Lauriston a gift in their will. Established in 2011, the Circle is growing every year
thanks to the passion our wonderful benefactors have for Lauriston and for the education of girls.
At the luncheon we were thrilled to listen to young students and alumnae about life at Lauriston today. Our 2022 School Captains, Selina Richter and Tegan Gheri, made compelling presentations proving that courage still shapes Lauriston girls, and that they do not shy away from taking risks and accepting new opportunities and challenges.
Throughout its history, our School has been sustained and developed from generation to generation by inspiring acts of generosity, both large and small. Gifts left in wills have had, and will continue to have, a major impact on the School’s ability to provide contemporary teaching and learning facilities, and to offer young women the opportunity to experience an outstanding education.
For these reasons, I am thrilled to welcome every new member to the Elizabeth Kirkhope Circle and I am proud to present Pamela Fitz-Gibbon (1971), Vivienne Harkness (1957) and Ruth Tideman (Principal 1983 - 2000) to the Lauriston bequest society.
Susan Just and Alix Bradfield thanked the new bequestors and presented Pamela and Vivienne with special EKC Pins. Ruth Tideman, who lives in Adelaide, will receive her EKC Pin in June.
Alix Bradfield, a former parent and grandparent at Lauriston, who also chaired the School Council for six years and is a bequestor and Honorary President of the EKC said: said “It’s exciting to leave a bequest to a world she knows nothing about but knowing that there will be a need and the education of girls will play a major part”.
‘ Such vision is a major inspiration to our Lauriston community to consider gifts in will and a real opportunity to imagine the impact these gifts will have on the future generations of Lauriston girls. ’
Justin Long, the FOL emcee in residence, called the evening to order and introduced the Lauriston School Captains, Tegan Gheri and Selina Richter. They reflected on the importance of fathers in a young woman’s life and reminded the dads that it is the simple, innocuous things that are often the most impactful – moments in a car, support from the sidelines or front row and perhaps an opportunity to beat dad in a run.
Our guest speaker, Lauriston alumnae and 2022 Winter Olympics Gold Medal coach
Kate Blamey (OL 2007) blew the room away with her recounting her journey from four-year-old kinder girl playing in the Blairholme sandpit to Olympic gold medal and World Cup circuit coach.
Interviewed by FOL committee member
Richard Miller, Kate talked of the impact her father has had on her life and of the Lauriston connections she still holds dear. She credits these people in large part to her strength
and resilience as an athlete and subsequently her forging her status as the only female high-performance coach on the World Cup circuit. Kate is truly an inspiring woman who moved many a dad, especially with the video montage and her narration of the sharing her time.
The primary purpose of the dinner and other FOL activities is to create enduring connections and share in the collective success of our daughters as they grow from sandpit to their own gold medal daises. That said, the FOL are not averse to helping the school, and therefore our girls, gain advantage through world class infrastructure and resources as was outlined by William Ullmer, the most recent addition to the committee.
Second only to Kate Blamey for holding the dads’ attention was the drawing of the annual raffle with all three winners in the room!
Special thanks to Jason D’Silva whose support was integral with the first prize, a “Lauriston Blue” Mitsubishi Mirage, being won by Rob Feeney. Congratulations go to Jonathon Senior and Chris Darby who secured the second (Fig Tree sculpture) and third prizes (dinner package to the Australian Open). With the support of ticket holders, the proceeds of the raffle exceeded expectations and will make a significant contribution to the development of the new external courts, as part of the It’s Her Turn campaign.
The Fathers of Lauriston were proud to cut the ribbon of the Weights & Conditioning Studio as part of the Ullmer Centre opening celebrations. We thank the Fathers of Lauriston for supporting the Weights & Conditioning Studio through their 2021 raffle.
The late Autumn evening of Thursday 19 May 2022 saw the long-awaited return of the Fathers of Lauriston (FOL) Annual Dinner at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. A fantastic turnout of almost 130 dads came together, rejoining old acquaintances and creating just as many new.
Over 400 members of the Lauriston community met at the beautiful Glasshouse for the incredible Huntingtower Lunch. Together, more than $35,000 was raised in support of our Foundation Scholarships.
The guests in attendance were fortunate to hear from keynote speaker and Old Lauristonian Kit Willow (OL 1993), as well as our wonderful Principal Susan Just who spoke so passionately about the new Foundation Scholarships.
Thanks to the generosity and compassion of the Old Lauristonians’ for their Giving Day contributions, in support of the new Foundation Scholarships that will provide financial assistance to students entering Year 7, through their year at Howqua and until their graduation in Year 12.
The Old Lauristonians’ Association (OLA) is a committee of passionate women who have, over many years, raised funds to support initiatives including the 2022 Giving Day. This gift will help a dream for scholarship recipients to become a reality.
The OLA will be looking forward to the day when these Foundation Scholarship recipients become Old Lauristonians.

We have audited the financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of The Lauriston Foundation (Inc) (the “Entity”) which comprises the combined statement of financial position as at 31 December 2022, the combined statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, combined statement of changes in equity and the combined statement of cash flows for the year then ended, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies, and the declaration by the Board of Management as set out on pages 3 to 17.
In our opinion the accompanying financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the Entity’s financial position as at 31 December 2022, and of its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards to the extent described in Note 1, the Association Incorporation Reform Act 2012 and Division 60 of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (Cth) (the ACNC Act).
We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the Group in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board’s APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including Independence Standards) (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.
We draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist the Entity to meet the financial reporting responsibilities of the Association Incorporation Reform Act 2012. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. Our report is intended solely for the members and Board of Management and should not be distributed to or used by parties other than the members and the Board of Management. Our opinion is not modified in respect of this matter.
The Board of Management are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report and has determined that the basis of preparation and accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial report are appropriate to meet the requirements of the Association Incorporation Reform Act 2012 and is appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The Board of Management’s responsibility also includes such internal control as the Board of Management determine is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
In preparing the financial report, the Board of Management is responsible for assessing the Entity’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the Board of Management either intend to liquidate the Entity or to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so.
Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of this financial report.
As part of an audit in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional scepticism throughout the audit. We also:
Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control.
Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Entity’s internal control.
Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by the Board of Management
Conclude on the appropriateness of the Board of Management’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the Entity’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the Entity to cease to continue as a going concern.
Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.
We communicate with the Board of Management regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.
