Lauriston Girls’ School - Handbook

School Uniform at Lauriston

At Lauriston, our uniform is more than the clothes our students wear.

From the moment they first put the uniform on, each student becomes part of Lauriston and belongs to a community rich with history and the possibilities of a great future to come.

The respect our students feel for themselves and each other is clear from the neat and orderly way that each girl presents herself. Every student who wears our uniform does so with pride; from top to toe, they become ambassadors for Lauriston and go forth into the world knowing they carry with them the support of all students and staff.

By wearing the same uniform, our students can push beyond barriers that might otherwise separate them and work together to get the best experience from their time at Lauriston. Freed from the distractions of what to wear, the uniform is an important part of distinguishing learning time from the rest of a student’s life and allows them to put their education before all else.

How to Purchase Items

Lauriston is fortunate to offer families both online and on campus retail opportunities throughout the year and will also deliver items to class for the younger year levels. Proceeds from the sale of the uniforms are directed back into school programs.

Prep – Year 4: dropped off at the classroom.

Year 5 – Year 12: to be collected from the Uniform Shop.

The Uniform Shop is located between the Moreton Bay Fig Tree and the Refectory Café. During the term, both the Uniform Shop and the Second-Hand Uniform Shop are open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Appointments for new students must be made by contacting Uniform Shop Manager, Jane Fox on (03) 9864 7569 or via uniforms@lauriston.vic.edu.au.

Current families can purchase items online via the Uniform Shop website, and the uniform items will be packaged for your daughter’s collection. If purchasing items in the on campus Uniform Shop, please note that there is EFTPOS only, no cash or AMEX is accepted.

Uniform Guidelines

Students must be in full, correct uniform each school day. Blazers must be worn with the winter uniform in Terms 2 and 3. The blazer is optional in Terms 1 and 4 but must be available for all School Assemblies. The summer uniform is worn Terms 1 and 4; the winter uniform is worn during Terms 2 and 3. There is a two-week transition period at the beginning of each term

When travelling to and from Lauriston, the school jumper may not be worn as the outer garment. In Terms 1 and 4, Prep – Year 8 must wear the school hat to and from Lauriston Depending on the date of change to winter uniform, students may be required to wear their school hats with their summer uniform for some part of Term 2.

The uniform is to be clean, in good repair and brown shoes polished regularly. All items should be marked with the student’s name as Lauriston takes no responsibility for lost articles.

School skirts and dresses are to be no more than five (5) centimetres above the knee.

Full school sports uniform must be worn for PE lessons and sport activities. Only bags with the Lauriston crest are to be carried.

Hair, Makeup and Jewellery Guidelines

• No student is allowed to wear makeup.

• Students may wear colourless nail hardener only.

• The only jewellery allowed is a wristwatch and a single pair of silver or gold studs, or small pearl earrings. Studs may be worn on any part of the ear. Drop-down earrings, hoops or sleepers are not permitted.

• Nose piercings or piercings on any visible part of the body are not allowed and students will be asked to remove them. Clear or flesh-coloured nose studs are not to be worn.

Physical Education Uniform – Junior School

If Junior School students have a sport or PE class before, during or after school, students are permitted to wear their sport uniform for the whole day. Students are expected to wear their full school uniform on days that they do not have sport or PE classes.

Physical Education Uniform – Senior School

We hope to maximise class activity time in Physical Education classes whist still upholding a range of guidelines that were implemented to improve uniform standards

Students are required to wear correct sport uniform for all physical education classes and sporting activities, including appropriate headwear during Term 1 and 4; in accordance with their timetabled classes as outlined below.

• Period 1 & 2 PE – Students come to school in school uniform and will get changed into PE uniform before roll call. Students will change back into school uniforms at recess. This means that unless students have a sporting commitment before school, they must arrive in full academic uniform.

• Period 3 & 4 PE – Students change into PE uniform during recess and will change back into school uniform at lunchtime.

• Period 5 & 6 PE – Students change into PE uniform during lunch and change back into school uniform before leaving the school grounds.

• As most of the Years 7 and 8 students participate in GSV (in contrast to a select group of year 10 – 12 students), Years 7 and 8 students may wear the sport uniform all day on Thursday (GSV sport day).

• Students that have PE in Periods 1-4 and then a sport commitment at lunchtime can stay in their PE uniform until the end of lunch. This means that students must change into academic uniform before Period 5.

• Students that have a lunchtime sporting commitment and another after school can remain in their PE uniform for period 5/6.

• Students that have three or more PE/sporting commitments throughout the day and attend all sessions can stay in their PE uniform all day. This must be approved by the Year Level Coordinator prior to the day. We will document this, so all academic staff are aware. The PE uniform needs to be correct and in line with the LGS PE/Sport Uniform Guidelines (i.e. No hoodies, Howqua fleece, black shorts, black socks, incorrect tracksuit pants etc.)

• Years 10 – 12 will be expected to get changed following GSV morning training sessions and before afternoon matches.

• All students will be required to be in their full school uniform for all formal assemblies. Should Physical Education follow a formal assembly (Monday period 6), students will be allocated time at the commencement of their Physical Education class to change into their Sport uniform.

• Students that have sport training before school, including rowing, will be able to wear their PE uniform to school but must get changed into their school uniform immediately after their training.

• At the conclusion of the school day, students will be given time prior to any competitive matches to change into their sport uniform. At the conclusion of GSV sport matches, students may go home in their correct sport uniform.

The Lauriston Sport Uniform Policy outlines Lauriston’s expectations regarding the wearing of the Lauriston Sport uniform. We believe that wearing the Lauriston Sport Uniform correctly encourages a sense of belonging and pride in representing Lauriston in Sport.

Lauriston expects high standards of presentation of its students and sport is no exception. The items listed are the official sports uniform for Lauriston and must be worn by students when participating in School physical e ducation lessons, sport training and competition. Consequences will be given to students not properly presented in the correct sport uniform.

All Lauriston badged items are available to be purchased from the Uniform Shop. Some sports require specific training, competition or safety equipment. These may need to be purchased in addition to the standard uniform.
