‘ It is our mission to inspire Lauriston girls to be courageous lifelong learners. They are ethical and compassionate young women who seek to resolve new-world problems and strive to be responsible, global citizens working with others to shape their world. ’
Learning programs at Lauriston Girls’ School are based around the School’s five core values:
We learn how to connect with others, manage the highs and lows and reap the rewards of our commitment by our purposeful engagement in all aspects of school life. We are motivated to participate and respond to changes in our world.
We engage proactively with the world; determined to better understand, reflect upon and question ourselves,
our experiences, and the society in which we live. We are critically engaged and curious about all that we encounter and learn.
We are courageous in our approach to managing change; embracing physical, moral, and intellectual challenges; and standing up for what we believe. Courage enables us to understand our strengths and act accordingly.
We approach learning and teaching with creativity as our cornerstone. We are imaginative, inventive, and
entrepreneurial. We are open to and champion new ideas and new ways.
We communicate openly, honestly, and respectfully allowing us to have meaningful connections with each other in the community and beyond. We foster a culture of optimism, collaboration, and celebration.
SUSAN JUST Principal
In this my final Foundation Report, it is reasonable to reflect on my participation in the Foundation during my 15 years as Principal of Lauriston Girls’ School.
Throughout my time at Lauriston the Foundation has actively sought to support our school in delivering our mission of inspiring our students to be courageous lifelong learners. They believe in the importance of girls’ education and providing them with an environment in which they can learn, grow and develop.
At Lauriston, every girl knows that she is at the centre of our curriculum offerings, wellbeing programs and co-curricular opportunities. Every girl at our school belongs to a community where she is encouraged to find her voice, take up the opportunities offered to her and to establish relationships with her teachers and peers that are supportive and inclusive.
On my arrival at Lauriston in 2010, I was part of the construction of a new building which included classrooms that was linked to Montrose House. This was the first time that I was able to observe the enthusiasm of the Foundation in supporting the School to create an environment where exceptional learning could take place.
‘ The value of an all-girls’ education should be evident to any individual who meets a current or past Lauriston student. When a person makes a donation or bequest to our Foundation, they are enabling our students to be agents of change in the world today and in the future. ’
In 2014, the Digital Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) was officially opened with the support of the Foundation. In my proposal for funding to the Foundation, I communicated the importance of such a laboratory in promoting STEM to our students and provided statistics about the low % of females who chose STEM related tertiary courses and entered STEM based careers. In 2024 we were able to highlight the increased enrolments of our students who take STEM related subject disciplines at Lauriston and who continue with tertiary studies in science, engineering, medicine and bio-medicine. The digital fabrication laboratory has played a role in this shift, particularly with our children from Kindergarten and the Junior School having equal access to the laboratory as our Senior School students. Another benefit of the digital fabrication laboratory has been its use by our visual arts and visual communication and design students. Their creativity and folios have been enhanced by this wonderful resource which is of benefit for their tertiary studies.
At the conclusion of 2024, we were close to completion of the Blairholme Early Learning Centre which will be officially opened in 2025 and by the conclusion of my 15 years at
Lauriston, the final stage of the Building Masterplan, our external courts, will be completed.
We subscribe to the Reggia Emilia philosophy which prioritises the environment as the ‘third teacher’ because it not only sparks social effective and cognitive learning but contributes to a sense of wellbeing and security for our students, teachers and staff. The Years 5/6 Centre, Ullmer Health and Wellbeing Centre and the Adventure Playground have become places for learning, collaboration and building self-confidence.
The Blairholme Early Learning Centre has been designed to create a safe space for our children, with an emphasis on their physical and emotional wellbeing. We aim, through design, to create spaces for learning, social interaction and fostering a strong sense of community.
While our new buildings are now a visible presence in our School and have made a significant and positive difference to the education we provide to our students, the Foundation and School Council have been working towards this building Masterplan since 2010, with many people contributing to planning the masterplan itself and developing a fundraising strategy.
The ‘It’s her Turn’ campaign and work of the Foundation and School Council is an important milestone in the history of advancement at Lauriston. The sum of money raised, and the support of our School and broader community was phenomenal and highlighted the value placed on the education of girls.
The School has appreciated the advocacy of the Foundation for the provision of scholarships and enhancing their ability to support a Lauriston education which may be out of reach for families. Our belief in the importance of girls’ education is matched by our belief that Lauriston is a place where girls will receive an exceptional education in a nurturing community. I have been able to observe the value of a Foundation Scholarship to the lives of past students who are now studying at university or have completed their studies and entered careers where they will contribute to our society.
Our Howqua campus is a place of powerful learning where young people learn about themselves and their capacity for accepting challenges. They learn to become more resilient and independent and forge relationships with their peers that may last for the rest of their lives. The Foundation embarked upon fundraising for a new Howqua student house in 2024 and we are looking forward to its construction being completed towards the end of 2025, in readiness for the 2026 cohort of Year 9 Howqua students. Throughout the 32-year history of the Howqua campus, the Foundation and School Council have played an important role in advocating for the development of the campus and raising funds for the construction of buildings which today are well used by students and staff. Like all of us, the members of our Foundation and School Council understand the strengths of the Howqua program in supporting the education and personal growth of our students.
My appreciation extends to the three Directors of Advancement I have worked with and our advancement staff. Their work begins with the building of relationships with all members of our school and broader community and extends into seeking donations which will enable our School to provide an exceptional education for our students now and in the future years.
I look back with great appreciation to our Lauriston Foundation Chairs
and members. Our Foundation Chairs have driven the mission to support our School through the enhancement of our facilities and the provision of scholarships. Our Foundation Chairs and members have demonstrated their commitment to and advocacy for our School and many have had significant ties with Lauriston, through family association, their attendance as students or the attendance of their daughters.
ELISE GILLESPIE OL (1999)
It is a great honour that I chair the Lauriston Foundation in its 40th year. I am deeply grateful for the vision and tenacity of the founding Foundation members and then School Principal, Ruth Tideman. The Lauriston Foundation was amongst the first for girls’ schools which speaks
‘ It’s hard to fathom what the world will be like in another 40 years and how this will impact the future decisions made by the school on facilities and curriculum to prepare Lauriston girls for their future. What I can picture, however, is Lauriston in 40 years, the facilities will of course be more advanced, and the uniform likely updated, but the spirit of the school will remain constant. ’
to Lauriston’s bold, forward-thinking values. Thanks to the generosity of past and present donors, the Foundation has supported the school to continuously deliver world leading facilities and educational experiences to inspire Lauriston girls to be courageous lifelong learners.
Howqua was an ambitious vision 40 years ago, today in its 32nd year, Howqua is a thriving country campus that draws girls to Lauriston from across the country and from around the world.
2025 marks the conclusion of our most recent major capital works at Lauriston with the opening of Blairholme in Term 1 and the completion of the tennis courts by the end of 2025. We also welcome our second Foundation Scholarship recipient to year 7 this year, as our first headed off to Howqua.
I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Principal Susan Just and Chair of Council Claudette Leeming for their leadership. I’d particularly like to acknowledge Susan’s enormous impact on Lauriston over her 15-year tenure and wish her well for the future. Susan leaves a legacy that will continue to benefit the entire Lauriston community.
If future generations of Lauriston Principals, Chairs of School Council and Foundation share Lauriston’s values, we will be able to continue to build a school for life.

As past Chair of the Foundation Board at Lauriston Girls’ School, I was privileged to witness the incredible generosity of our community through initiatives like the Annual Giving Appeal, Capital Campaigns, Scholarship Fund, and Bequests Program. Seeing the school thrive and progress philanthropically has been truly rewarding, ensuring that future generations of Lauriston girls continue to benefit from world-class opportunities.

Excitement is generated by successful campaigns to improve Lauriston.
What joy! Seeing Howqua turn from farmland to a wonderful school campus.
A joyful experience! Our Year 5 granddaughter proudly showing us “her school” while I quietly noticed many projects completed over the last 30 years thanks to the Lauriston Foundation.
Roger Gillespie OAM
Being on the Foundation Board was important to me as it allowed me to contribute, both in terms of skills and financially, to the future of the School, just as others before me had, and which my daughter Jane was then enjoying. I also thought it was important to balance out the tendency for philanthropic support to favour boys’ schools.
Being on the Foundation Board introduced me to a whole new circle of contacts who were like minded in their support of the School. It also provided important work-life balance – no matter how busy I was in the office, I always left in time to make the Foundation meetings!
During my time on the Foundation Board, we were involved in some exciting projects which have had a lasting impact on the School, including building the Swimming Centre and the Howqua Offsite Campus. We also tried to get momentum behind the Scholarship and Bequest programs.

At the heart of Lauriston Girls’ School is a vibrant and engaged community— one that believes in the power of giving and service. The Lauriston Foundation is proud to work alongside key community groups, including the Lauriston Parents’ Association (LPA), whose dedication strengthens both our school and the opportunities we provide for young people.
More than 400 members of our community have not only given generously but have also volunteered their time and expertise on committees, ensuring that Lauriston remains a place of connection, support, and opportunity. Through their efforts, the LPA has made a tangible impact, raising significant funds for the Lauriston Foundation Scholarship—our meanstested scholarship that provides access to a Lauriston education for a future changemaker.
In 2024, the LPA led several successful fundraising initiatives, including the Huntingtower Lunch, the Fathers of Lauriston Dinner, and second-hand uniform sales. These events not only raised funds but also brought our community together in a shared purpose: to support and uplift the next generation of Lauriston students.
Service lies at the heart of any strong community. It is through acts of generosity—both large and small—that we create lasting change. Whether through financial contributions or volunteering, every effort strengthens the fabric of our school and ensures that future students can benefit from the exceptional education Lauriston provides.
On Thursday 30 May 2024, the Lauriston community once again demonstrated its extraordinary generosity and spirit for the School’s second-ever Giving Day. This year’s Giving Day was dedicated to raising funds for the Lauriston Foundation Scholarship Program — providing lifechanging, means-tested scholarships to students who would not otherwise have access to a Lauriston education, including the transformative Year 9 experience at Howqua.
Thanks to the collective generosity of more than 235 members of the Lauriston community — including Old Lauristonians, current and past parents, staff, and friends of the School — together with our Giving Day Leaders, vital funds were raised to support both a new Foundation Scholar commencing in Year 7 in 2025, as well as our inaugural Foundation Scholar, who will begin her Howqua journey next year.
Throughout the day, the spirit of Giving Day was felt across the School. Senior
School students gathered for a lively lunchtime BBQ in support of the cause, while that evening the Fathers of Lauriston hosted a special dinner, with all proceeds directed to Giving Day.
Adding to the excitement, friendly competition between the School’s Houses saw Mitchell House proudly take out the highest House participation for the day — a reflection of the strength of community and shared purpose that Giving Day inspires.
The Lauriston Foundation Scholarship Program not only provides an exceptional education, but creates a ripple effect — transforming the future of each recipient, their family, and their wider community. Thanks to the generosity shown on Giving Day 2024, more young women will have the opportunity to thrive, learn, and lead at Lauriston — and beyond.
‘ Excited to be contributing to girls’ education, with scholarship opportunities to girls who wouldn’t otherwise be afforded a Lauriston education! Well done Lauriston! ’
‘ Very happy to support a girl to have an outstanding Lauriston education –paying it forward! ’
‘ A quality education for girls is very important and should be supported. ’

‘‘ Since joining Lauriston Girls’ School in 2018 with 4 of our girls, we have found ourselves more and more connected and rooted with the Lauriston community. We have seen first-hand the transformational impact on Elenor and Annabel after attending Year 9 at Howqua campus. They have grown to love the outdoors, gained greater sense of independence and believe that they are capable of pursuing bigger things in life; more importantly to be contributors to their local community and the world. It is our pleasure and honour to be able to support the building of the new Howqua House, we can’t wait to see it being completed in 2025!! ’’ — Mike Wu and Shan Kuo
In 2025, Lauriston Girls’ School will celebrate two significant milestones: the 40th anniversary of the Lauriston Foundation and the completion of the newest Howqua House. This 11th house will be a home away from home for Year 9 students beginning in 2026.
The story of the 11th Howqua house began in 2023, a milestone year that marked the 30th anniversary of the Howqua campus. That same year, a successful appeal saw generous contributions from across the community, including 13 major donors, laying the foundation for this exciting development. In 2024, the project was further propelled by a transformational gift from the Wu Kuo family, whose generosity ensures future generations of Howquarians will continue to thrive in an environment designed for challenge, growth, and camaraderie. Fittingly, 2026 will also mark another historic moment for Howqua, as it welcomes its first intergenerational Howquarians—students whose mothers once walked the same trails and embraced the same unique learning experience.

In the Big Science Competition, Audrey achieved a credit, a bursary for the Science Talent Search and a high distinction in the International Chemistry Quiz.
Lauriston alumnae continue to make their mark on the world stage, pursuing their passions and excelling in diverse fields.
At the recent Paris Olympics, three remarkable Old Lauristonians took on unique roles—competing in rowing, managing Australia’s tennis team, and serving as a sailing technical officer. Their experiences reflect the many pathways Lauriston women take to achieve success on the global stage.
Jessica Morrison shared her excitement about her Olympic experience, saying, “It was a fantastic Games to be part of and I was thrilled to come away with another podium finish.” She highlighted the unique atmosphere, with loud cheering and music energising the races. Reflecting on her rowing journey, Jess expressed gratitude to the Lauriston community for their support and shared her excitement for life beyond sport.
Following her return from Paris, Jess attended the Huntingtower Luncheon as a special guest. She later surprised Lauriston rowers by joining them for a training session at the boat sheds. In a memorable gesture, Jess gifted the school her Paris Olympics rowing zootie, which now hangs proudly in the Ullmer Sport and Wellbeing Centre alongside her Tokyo 2020 zootie.
As the Team Manager for the Australian Olympic Tennis team, Dr. Danielle Gescheit described her time in Paris as unforgettable. “The experience of staying in the village and having the tennis event take place at Roland Garros was incredible,” she said. Danielle shared her pride in wearing the Green and Gold, and celebrated the team’s success, including a Gold medal in the Men’s Doubles.
After the Olympics, Danielle returned to Paris for the Paralympics, representing Tennis Australia and serving on the Jury of Appeal for the International Tennis Federation. She has remained an active part of Lauriston, participating in events such as the Howqua 30 Year celebration, and as a guest speaker at International Women’s Day and the Fathers of Lauriston dinner.
Robeena Evensen served as a National Technical Officer for sailing in Marseille, coordinating between various committees and officials. She described the experience as highly rewarding but also demanding, requiring impartiality in tense situations. Despite the pressure, Robeena found the experience enriching and recommends others consider volunteering for future events.
Robeena, based in Monaco, has volunteered at the local yacht club for 26 years and is highly sought after for her multilingual skills. She looks forward to future opportunities, including the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.
As Lauriston Girls’ School marks the 40th anniversary of the Foundation Board, it is a fitting moment to reflect on the profound impact of Bequests in shaping the school’s future. Since the Board’s inception in 1985, Lauriston has been fortunate to receive extraordinary support from those who have chosen to leave a lasting legacy, ensuring that generations of students continue to benefit from a world-class education.
Notable Bequests, such as the Lilian Bayly Bequest, the James Smibert
Bequest, and the Sarah Hollyer Bequest, have played a pivotal role in enriching the Lauriston experience. These gifts have contributed to vital facilities, scholarships, and programs, reinforcing the school’s vision for girls’ education.
Dr James Smibert’s generous Bequest in 2006, following his decades of involvement with Lauriston, exemplifies this enduring spirit of philanthropy. Likewise, Lilian Bayly’s 2004 Bequest provided for the creation of the Year 7/8
In 2004, Lauriston received an extraordinary gift from Lilian Bayly, a former student from the 1920s.
Lilian’s deep love for Lauriston and recognition of the profound impact the school had on her life led her to leave her entire estate to the Lauriston Foundation. This remarkable act of generosity demonstrated her enduring appreciation for the education and values instilled in her during her time at the school.
Following her marriage to Stanislaus Bayly, Lilian moved to Sydney, where she remained closely connected to Lauriston as a dedicated supporter of the NSW branch of the Old Lauristonians Association. Her commitment to the school extended well beyond her own time as a student, reinforcing the strong community bonds that Lauriston fosters among its alumnae.
Centre, while Sarah Hollyer’s Bequest enabled the establishment of the 10th Howqua House, both serving as lasting tributes to their dedication.
As Lauriston looks ahead, the legacy of Bequests will continue to shape its future, offering opportunities for students to thrive. The generosity of those who have contributed over the past 40 years is a testament to the strong bonds of the Lauriston community and its commitment to excellence in girls’ education.
In recognition of her generosity, Lauriston named the current Year 7/8 Centre in Lilian Bayly’s honour in 2007. This facility has since become a vital part of the school, supporting students at a critical stage in their education and ensuring they have access to the best possible learning environment.
Dr James Smibert’s deep and enduring connection with Lauriston spanned decades, beginning in 1948. A past president of the Lauriston Parents’ Association, he was a dedicated supporter of the school, with his commitment reflected not only in his leadership but also in his family’s strong ties to Lauriston. His four daughters—Elizabeth Cotton (1961), Wendy Smibert (1963), Linden Carter (1969), and Barbara Hurley (1973)— all attended the school, as did his three granddaughters, with his great granddaughter Chloe currently enrolled. In 2006, Dr Smibert demonstrated his belief in the value of girls’ education with a remarkable Bequest from his estate. This generous gift was a significant contribution to Lauriston’s vision, leaving a lasting impact on future generations of students.
Another significant Bequest that has had a lasting impact on Lauriston was that of Sarah Hollyer, a devoted alumna who tragically lost her life in a car accident in 2006. Sarah spent her entire school life at Lauriston, beginning in the Junior School in 1956 and matriculating in 1967. Her academic achievements were outstanding—she won a Commonwealth Secondary Scholarship in 1965 and excelled in subjects such as English Expression, Latin, French, German (Second Class Honours), and 18th Century History (Second Class Honours).
Sarah was an active and engaged student, a member of Andrews House, and a recipient of House Colours in 1967. She contributed her talents to the School Choir, the Irving Library Committee, and served as the French Librarian. Her passion for learning continued beyond Lauriston, leading her to complete a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne and qualify as a Librarian. At the time of her passing, she was working in the library at Marcellin College.
Throughout her life, Sarah remained a dedicated supporter of Lauriston, attending school events with great
enthusiasm and maintaining strong ties with her classmates from the Class of 1967. Her love for the school was evident not only in her participation in alumnae activities but also in the way she spoke fondly of her experiences at Lauriston.
Sarah’s legacy was honoured through the establishment of the 10th Howqua House, named in her memory. This facility provides students with an enriching residential experience at Howqua, continuing Sarah’s spirit of learning, adventure, and community.
Leaving a Bequest to Lauriston is a meaningful way to support the school’s long-standing commitment to providing an outstanding education for girls, a tradition upheld since 1901. The generosity of those who contribute to the Bequest Program has been instrumental in funding scholarships and bursaries, constructing new buildings, and acquiring essential educational resources.
If you would like to learn more about how you can contribute to Lauriston through a Bequest, please contact Abby Finn, Bequests Associate 0401 378 804 or finnab@lauriston.vic.edu.au

Lauriston’s long-standing supporters have played a vital role in supporting the school’s facilities, means-tested scholarships, and educational opportunities for girls over many years. Their ongoing contributions have helped fund key projects that enhance learning spaces, provide financial assistance to students, and ensure that Lauriston
continues to offer a well-rounded education. This year, we recognise the families and individuals whose sustained generosity—whether over consecutive years or through long-term but intermittent support—has had a lasting impact, helping to shape the school’s future and create opportunities for generations of Lauriston students.
