Living in a town that is the corridor to famous Hill Country wineries it seemed only fitting that the market carried products that exuded that similar appeal of Texas love. Before you even enter the doors of the shop you’re greeted by colorful country-inspired décor and lush native plants. Inside, you’ll find an abundance of fresh produce, farm eggs and milk, rustic collectibles, trinkets and postcards, famous Fredericksburg favorites and Kirby-Flores’ favorite - retro candies, sodas and toys. “We are big supporters of buying local. So we carry as much local products as we can: salsas and rubs, farm eggs and grass-fed beef, lotions and soaps. People who live here, and especially tourists, love that we have those things. But what I really love is to see grandparents come in with their grandkids and show them these candies and toys they grew up with. They love the stories,” she said.
Sisterdale conveniently runs along the TransAmerica Trail bringing dozens of travelers to the market every cycling season. In addition, the shop is a gathering place for motorcyclists, ranchers and tourists. “We meet people from all over. It’s amazing to get to hear the stories of their travels,” Kirby-Flores said. “Every Thursday morning a group of locals come here, drink coffee and just hang out. To be a place that offers that sort of togetherness is amazing.” That sense of community that she describes is not something foreign to this small Hill Country town. In fact, it is the very philosophy that it stands for. “When we came here, people immediately welcomed us with open arms. They took us in, supported us and continue to do so every day,” KirbyFlores said. “People here look out for each other. There is a sense of belonging that is hard to describe. But when tourists come here, they see it. It’s wonderful to be a part of.” BBM
