Courtyard Section Perspective

The building is made of 6 unit types from studios to 3 bedrooms. Each unit has the same size living and dining space and they expand vertically to increase the number of bedrooms.

Units are entered from a double height space along he corridor into the kitchen. A central core of bathrooms and stairwells connect the units around a central core.

Through units provide views to the street and courtyard, lighting from two sides, and cross ventilation.

Crossworks District

Minneapolis, MN

Winter 2013 | Instructors: Deni Rugeri & Irene Curulli

A group submission for the Urban Land Institute’s Gerald D. Hines Competition. This interdisciplinary competition examined the feasibility of a large scale, mixed-use development in the Downtown East district of Minneapolis.

Our vision for the area strived to create a district with compelling purpose and character that served as a powerful catalyst to activate neighborhood relationships, enhance the pedestrian experience, support sustainability, and construct a community culture.

The district acts as “cog that turns the wheel”, activating the surrounding neighborhood edges and turning potential energy into kinetic energy.

A hierarchy of streets creates an overlapping green and urban grid. With residential entrances along the North-South streets and commercial districts located along the East-West Boulevards. Portland Ave acts as a major pedestrian and bike transit street connecting to the riverfront and 5th Street becomes a pedestrian transit corridor that links to Nicollette Mall on the West side.

A new central plaza will sit at the nexus of the development connecting the major corridors as well as the armory and the stadium. Underground parking beneath the plaza will serve local businesses and the stadium.

Strategies at the urban block and infrastructure scale help to mitigate environmental impact. Building massing, and solar orientation provide access to summer winds and winter sun.

Geothermal heat pumps and solar arrays provide supplemental energy for the development while storm water planters reduce the amount of runoff.

designBridge Natural Playscape

Eugene, OR

Winter 2012 | Professor: Juli Brode

A group design-build renovation for the existing outdoor play area at the Co-op Family Center. This project looked to create a natural playscape that fostered children’s gross motor skills, allowed for self manipulation of their environment, and enhanced their relationship with the natural world.

The spatial arrangement was designed largely in response to existing conditions; creating a dry creek bed to deal with flooding and a bike loop to reduce bike collisions.

Diagrams of schematic design emphasizing peaks and valleys

Current flooding on the site is dealt with by the creation of a three part drainage system, a dry creek bed, a covered overflow pipe and a rain garden.

Closing the bike loop and a change in materials indicated an intersection between bike and pedestrian traffic.

Unbound: Grant County Library

John Day, OR

Summer

2012 | Professor: Jolie Kerns

In a digital age, the library has shifted roles and no longer acts solely as a repository for books but as a physical space for members of the community to gather. My proposal for the John Day Library explores ways to create a sense of community and civic presence for the city by focusing on a multifunctional space.

The library operates as a community arts and event space in addition to its traditional role. As budget cuts threaten arts programs in public schools, it is important that community partnerships are formed in order to continue to provide these opportunities. The library will provide classes for user groups of all ages and studio spaces will be available for rent giving the library an additional income to fund extra services.

The library is composed of long strands that run East-West across the site, and act as a link between the residential and community zones. These strands are made up of the collection space, maker space, and administration space. Each strand joins at strategic points to create connections between the three programs. Subtle shifts in both plan and section allow for a differentiation of programmatic elements while maintaining a visual connection to the library, its patrons and events taking place throughout.

Narrow spaces and clerestories provide for even lighting and
