I am keen and reliable with a mature attitude to work. I work well under pressure both alone and as part of a team, meeting deadlines.

I am a passionate, conscientious and family-orientated girl, constantly aiming to push myself to my personal limits and achievements. I am half Italian on my Father’s side, and find that throughout every aspect of my everyday this plays a huge role.

Being brought up in such a family orientated and strong cultural background has enabled me to reflect this personality into my professional life.

Watson Batty Architects, Guiseley, Leeds 8 weeks voluntary between June 2006 and June 2008.

I undertook some voluntary work experience in order to get a taste for the architectural profession. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Watson Batty Architects, so much so that I continued to work through the holidays for two years. During my placement I undertook AutoCAD and Sketchup training, where I then designed two buildings using these.

Whilst at the Tribunals Service I also co-piloted new schemes, volunteering my input and time. I received a Reward and Recognition bonus three times throughout my time at the Tribunals Service; for running new LEAN initiative schemes, chairing meetings at short notice, contributing to the BEACON status of the office, and drawing up professional CAD plans of the office and re-structuring the teams and work to a more efficient layout.

My Part 1 Curriculum Vitae was a design piece in itself. I worked on making my CV stand out amongst the others and had a lot of fun designing the layout, and creating each piece, hand folding it and sticking them down with velcro to open out.

002 Museum of Memories 2011 In my second year studying undergraduate architecture at Leeds school of Architecture, I was introduced to a vertical studio, where I worked with third year students as well as my tutors to develop my understanding of architecture.

The project in my first semester was sited in Istanbul, where I began to create a very poetic response to the brief that I was set. I designed a building in a skinny plot, which I named ‘Museum of Memories’ Being from a family-orientated background myself, I found that the culture of Istanbul also incorporated much of the same values that I have grown up with, and the idea of living in one block of flats as a family became my driving point for the museum of memories, where all family members could exhibit pieces of their past to the public.

The images below show a mapping exercise that I undertook with a selection of my peers in order to create a link between an array of sites within Istanbul.

The mapping exercise was filmed at night using light exposure to give an essence of movement through Istanbul.

We photographed strips of light running through and across the sites as a connecting feature.

On reflection of this project, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was very pleased with my concept design, as I worked hard to create a poetic and emotive response from the brief. I feel though, that I really let myself down when it came to the final presentation of the project, as I do not feel that I had any good renderings to really do this design justice.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 Architecture is as much about people as it is the built environment.

Through my BA3 project I have incorporated this interest through my whole scheme tied together by my design narrative.

My BA3 project is inspired by the 2012 Venice Biennale, titled ‘Common Ground’. I propose to create a cultural and contextual response to my site through the exploration of Common Ground as the domain between public and private use of the built environment.

My site is in the city of Chioggia, near Sottomarina at the southern end of the Lido in the Veneto region of northern Italy, 25km south of Venice.

My scheme incorporates a master plan and developments of this through two buildings located on Isola Saloni in the city of Chioggia, VE, all of which responded to the site through the theories of public and private space.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 The underlying theme for my project has been ‘Contrast’; the contrast between Local and Tourist; I chose my site on Chioggia due to the contrast it posed with Venice; and I have explored the contrast of public and private space through my master plan and building design.

Before and during the site visit to Venice I carried out a series of studies on squares and Venetian campos and how these were used as public space for meeting and gathering. Common Ground is important to Italian culture and the local community of Chioggia, and I have defined this as the public space through my master plan.

I designed a Community College Campus as the driving scheme for my master plan in order to tackle the problems of the area, economically and socially, through the education of the community.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 I used a theoretical approach to the planning of Chioggia, focusing on the idea of integrating the community together through public space. I did this through the use of spatial syntax studies, in order to produce numerical values of the integration of spaces. This was based on the integrational syntax values of the Old Town of Chioggia and replicated to create Isola dei Saloni as an integrated community. I also focused on the syntax theory of Convex spaces which are occupiable voids between buildings that would be designed as public squares and campos. I believe that the man-made components of the built environment, coupled with the characteristics of the space between, define the common ground.

As a development of the Community College master plan scheme I designed a library building within the existing faรงade of the old industrial site. Libraries in terms of architecture are landmark buildings. I therefore feel that designing this intervention within the existing building of the industrial site will allow the building to be a landmark on Isola dei Saloni.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 A library is the first point of call for education, giving access to lifelong learning to develop and maintain skills.

This is a design intervention which reflects everyday life in an urban context.

I worked hard to develop my rendering skills through my third year as I felt that this was my biggest weakness in second year. I wanted to portray my project well, in order to fully portray the ideologies and theories behind my design.

The library is designed with a large central atrium space, intended as an occupiable space, replicating the convex spaces designed through my master plan. This space is fundamentally empty space deliberately planned with the possibility that people may enter it as the ‘Common Ground’.

As the building contains the common ground area for the community within the educational facilities, this changes the function of the library; typically denoted as a quiet space, and instead opens up the opportunity for meeting and socialising within this space. A library is a meeting place for today’s local community.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 A library is a meeting place for culture, learning and insight. As the library is adapting to new technologies and digital media, spaces are becoming more flexible and open for different functions. The library has become, not just a place to borrow books, but a place for meeting friends, studying, working, reading the newspaper or magazines, a place for personal development and a place to view exhibitions and cultural events.

Reading rooms are planned out from the central atrium with punctured holes in the side and rear elevation to allow natural lighting into the building, as well as a large skylight situated above the central atrium space.

The ground and first floor are community spaces, identified by a piano noble and housing the social functions between the reading rooms.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 My second intervention is a centre for the education of the community about emergency medicine acting as a public service for the community.

This scheme is a development of the subjects offered at the community college of the master plan, whilst also providing a public service for the local area.

The building is inspired by the series of hospital drawings by Barbara Hepworth. The drawings look at the process of surgery and how this may relate to the process of sculpture. Hepworth completed the drawings during the launch of the National Health Service supporting social reconstruction and creating a more inclusive society. She began the series of the operating theatre after the invitation from her friend, Norman Capener, following the hospitalisation of her daughter, who was treated by him.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 The form of my building has therefore arisen by the sculptural qualities of architecture, idealising a pure form through the design of a teaching tower rising from the public base building. The pure form relates to the building function creating a clean aesthetic exterior, as well as interior. This also creates a landmark feature that is visible from all vantage points in Chioggia, directing the community to the building, and orientating people around Isola dei Saloni.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 The principle spaces within the programme of the building are the surgical amphitheatre, the chapel space and the waiting area. I have designed each of these spaces as linked through seating in congregation.

The idea of the surgical amphitheatre stemmed from a research into learning within a practical environment. This is also still contextual to the area of Chioggia, as the University of Padua, located around 25km away, and also used to have a surgical amphitheatre for the teaching of surgical procedures.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 The chapel and waiting spaces are also linked through the idea of reflection through waiting. Both of these spaces are waiting spaces within themselves, but contrast the view of public and private. A chapel within a health care facility is typically viewed as a private space, but open to all public. This space has been interesting to design due to its exploration of the public and private space.

For my final submission for my BA3 course I created 2 large models of my master plan, both measuring 2.1m by 1.2m showing my studies of spatial syntax, with both my building designs at a 1:500 scale ad a 1:1250 scale.

They worked really well in order to show my whole design and how everything linked together.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 I feel that after my three years of undergraduate study, my weaknesses have been through the technical design and detailing of my work.

I have created the construction sequence below, however I struggled with this aspect of my degree, and find that this is an area that I wish to improve before I continue my studies for my postgraduate course.

I hope to achieve this through my Part 1 work placement.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 The waiting space has two elements to it, an internal space and an external space. The internal space contains exposed structural concrete columns, whilst the external space reiterates these columns with trees and canopy structures.

These vertical elements begin to denote the space as public, filtering the space and creating open spaces for meeting and gathering. The waiting happens at the edge of The materiality of my buildings has been a design imperative of mine; also reiterating the theme of contrast between the old and new as well as retaining a sense of historic culture and context within Chioggia.

003 Common Ground 2012-13 My final year of my BA (Hons) Architecture Undergraduate degree has been a journey of self-discovery.

As well as developing a further understanding of architectural design and practice, this year I have developed as a person. Through my design narrative and third year experience I put into words why I want to become an architect.

I am interested in how the world works, the people within it, and the role the architecture has to play it this; creating habitable spaces for people.

The most important piece of my project this year has been writing my personal design philosophy, understanding where I want to be in the architectural profession.

I believe that Architecture would cease to exist without people to inhabit and use the space.

I aim to create a sensitive, cultural and contextual response through a reflective design process, exploring the nature and character of space, along with the sensory aspects of experience.

Establishing a sense of place and a position within culture, I want to design buildings as sensory components, using materiality and techniques to evoke experience.

004 Pearce Bottomley Architects 2013I began working at Pearce Bottomley Architects in October 2013 as my Part 1 placement before my postgraduate studies.

I am thoroughly enjoying my time here as I feel that I am learning and developing as an architect.

At Pearce Bottomley, we have had many discussions regarding my work and my strengths and weaknesses identified from undergraduate course, and I am being given work that directly relates to more of my weaknesses in order to allow me to learn and develop.

I have a lot of responsibility at Pearce Bottomley, and I am currently running my own project from conception to completion, with the help of my colleagues and my mentor who is the project architect on the job.

I am gaining an invaluable experience at Pearce Bottomley, where I am learning about aspects of architecture which I have never come across before, such as contract documentation, health and safety and working drawings.

004 Pearce Bottomley Architects 2013Ellergill House. Skipton, UK. I completed a site survey of the existing dwelling and drew a feasibility study for the clients to discuss initial ideas in order to go ahead with the project.

Spire Hospital. Hull, UK. I put together numerous presentation boards to be presented to the clients, as well as members of the public.

Sandhill Farm. Bedale, UK. ÂŁ1.2million I aided with the design development of the project following client comments and drew and submitted the planning application for the conversion, extension and alterations of the building. I used my Photoshop skills to render the elevations, as well as create conceptual 3D visuals of the project for the client.

St Francis of Assisi Church, Morley Alterations and extensions of existing church to contain presbytery. I have aided with the tender documentation for this project, drawing details and specifying the finishes.

Aberford Village Hall, Leeds I am putting together a feasibility scheme for presentation to the general public for the construction of a new build village hall, incorporating a community sports centre within the building and an external MUGA.

004 Pearce Bottomley Architects 2013The Kenny House. Fairburn, UK. ÂŁ200,000.

I developed the design from concept stage through direction from my mentor and attending client meetings. I drew and submitted a full planning application for the project. I kept in constant negotiation with the planners through regular communication in order to amend and approve objections from Yorkshire Water and NYC Highways.

I drew and submitted the building regulations application, and the working drawings package for tender of the project, and drew up a cost analysis when the tenders returned, in order to bring the project up to budget.

I regularly hold meetings with the clients, and consultants, to progress with the project and I have built up a good client relationship.

I hope to be able to continue with this project, seeing the project right from conception to completion. [Working drawings featured below which I produced for tender]

004 Pearce Bottomley Architects 2013St Wilfred’s Church. Ripon, UK. I aided with the design development and CAD drawings for internal alterations of the church.

Stanks Methodist Church. Leeds, UK. I drew a feasibility study for the client to initiate a discussion of design for the proposal, researching relevant planning policies and conducting a statement on possible planning issues for the conversion of the church.

The Old Gatehouse. Thorner, UK. I helped with the snagging report for practical completion of the project.

Shenley. Burn Bridge, UK. I created 3D visuals for the client to develop the design as it was in construction.

I put together and printed A1 presentation boards for the clients and public consultations.

Farrow Health centre, Bradford.

I designed the reception desk and created visual renders of the internal layout for presentation to the clients. I attended a site meeting for the project, and aided with the checking of ironmongery schedules through the construction stage.

Shadwell Grange, Leeds I am aiding with the concept design and the planning submission for the master planning of Shadwell Grange.

[Sketch scheme opposite which I hand drew to aid the planning application] All Saints Church, Kirkby Overflow I am rendering a 3D model that I have created for a feasibility scheme for an extension to All Saints Church to happen in three phases. I am being given the opportunity through this project to add my own design features to the extension.

005 Life Drawing 2014 The human form has interested me throughout my career, looking at this in both my A-Level art projects, as well as though architecture.

I love drawing, and feel that this a skill which is lost through the new technologies within architecture.

I regularly attend life drawing classes in order to keep my drawing skills up to date, as sometimes it is important to remember to use the right tool for the job, and computer drawings aren’t always the right tool within architecture.

I like to experiment with different drawing mediums, and I hope that this ill be a skill, as well as a hobby, which I continue to improve throughout my career.

006 Travel and Photography My hobbies of travel and photography seem to fit hand in hand, as I can’t travel without my camera, and I always photograph my travels!

I have a passion for meeting new people and exploring new cultures, and I always document this through photography.
