M EG WOLITZER Luncheon Emcee The Interestings The Chicago Tribune and Newsday have likened Meg Wolitzer’s ability to tackle big American issues to that of Tom Wolfe, Jonathan Franzen and Rick Moody, while Vanity Fair has called her a “stealth feminist” who “expertly teases out the socio-sexual power dynamics between men and women.” Regularly invoking comparisons to the great male titans of American literature, Wolitzer retains a voice that is all her own and one that is unafraid to challenge the very canon to which she is compared. Wolitzer now delivers an ambitious and career-culminating novel about early talent and what becomes of it; and the quiet envy we may feel even toward the people we love most. Wide in scope and populated with complex and appealing characters, The Interestings chronicles the lives of six teenagers who become lifelong friends—beginning at a summer camp for the artistically talented and following them through adulthood in a changing New York City that spans the 70s, 80s, 90s and onward. Over the decades, these characters realize that not everyone can sustain what seemed to be their adolescent specialness, and they can’t help but see the divergence in their respective talents, fortunes, and degrees of life satisfaction. Meg Wolitzer's previous novels include The Uncoupling, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, and The Wife. Her short fiction has appeared in The Best American Short Stories and The Pushcart Prize. She was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the John Gardner Book Award from Binghamton University. Along with singer-songwriter Suzzy Roche, Ms. Wolitzer is currently a guest artist in the Princeton Atelier program at Princeton University. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Meg Wolitzer lives in New York City.
