Welcome to the Annual JDRF Promise Ball Gala – ONE NIGHT – Unmask the Cure! We are thrilled to share this special evening with our friends, family and guests and want to thank you for your generosity in the effort to find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D). We are grateful to the JDRF Desert Southwest Chapter members for their unwavering generosity and passion in the pursuit of finding a cure for all of our loved ones who struggle with T1D. In our hearts, we know that JDRF’s commitment and stewardship will lead us to a cure. We would also like to acknowledge and thank every volunteer, donor and sponsor whose extraordinary effort and generosity makes this wonderful evening possible. We are proud to recognize this year’s Honorees – the eleven past Presidents of the Desert Southwest Phoenix Board of Directors – The President’s

Circle. These Past Presidents have generously supported the JDRF Desert Southwest chapter and the Promise Ball – and have made significant contributions in the fight to cure, treat and prevent T1D. Congratulations and thank you all for sharing our vision for a day without type 1 diabetes. Please enjoy the evening and raise your bid cards in love and support. Rhonda Claxton

JDRF and Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) JDRF IS THE LEADING GLOBAL ORGANIZATION FOCUSED on T1D research, funding the best, most cutting edge research in the world. T1D IS AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. T1D AFFECTS CHILDREN AND ADULTS AT ANY AGE. It strikes suddenly, causing dependence on insulin for life and carrying the constant threat of devastating complications. T1D NEEDS CONSTANT ATTENTION. People with T1D carefully balance insulin doses with food and activity 24/7 and test their blood sugar six or more times daily. Despite this vigilance they are still at risk for dangerous and possibly life-threatening, high or low blood sugar levels. T1D IS NOT CURED BY INSULIN. While insulin injections or infusions allow a person with T1D to stay alive, they do not cure the disease, nor do they necessarily prevent the possibility of the diseases’ serious effects. Funds raised this evening will support JDRF’s patient-focused research to prevent, treat and cure T1D. Thank you for making a difference.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the JDRF Desert Southwest Chapter we welcome you to One Night – Unmask the Cure, a Masquerade Ball. Thank you for joining us for a very special evening. Type one diabetes (T1D) is a very personal disease. Over the course of two years, not only was one of our children diagnosed with T1D, but three of our four children. My wife Elyse and I are extremely grateful for the support JDRF has provided and the path to fund research that will one day lead to a cure. I would like to extend a special thanks to Josh Rawitch, our 2014 Gala Director as well as Jeff Girardin, OD and Rhonda Claxton, our Co-Chairs. We have seen the volunteers on the Gala Committee hard at work all year, striving to make this event a success. Their dedication is amazing, as evidenced by what you see and experience tonight. We are honored to be celebrating the combined efforts of our President’s Circle tonight. The President’s Circle includes the past Presidents of the Board of Directors spanning the past eleven years. They have each consistently led by example and deserve our utmost gratitude and admiration.

JDRF’s mission is the same today as when it was founded in 1970 by a small group of parents—to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Today, JDRF is the largest charitable funder of T1D research. Thanks to the tireless efforts of tens of thousands of supporters, we have driven major scientific advances that have resulted in life-changing therapies for the millions of people who live with this disease. JDRF is now the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a strategic research plan to end the disease. Together, we are working toward a world without T1D. Your generosity and commitment to the JDRF mission will help us turn Type One into Type None. With Warmest Regards, Scott Whyte Desert Southwest Chapter Board President

auctioneer RANDY PARNELL Randy Parnell saw a need in his community for charitable fundraising and felt called to benefit auctions. “When you are an auctioneer in a community you’re invested in, you contribute what you can to it. I use my auction skills to help charities raise money for their goals.” With that in mind Randy joined Stokes Auction Group in 2002. Randy connects with audience members on a personal level because “their bid follows their smile.” He emphasizes the importance of believing in the cause he’s promoting. Randy wants to ensure that his clients’ long months of work pay off on the night of their auction. Randy is the proud father of two California Polytechnic State University alumni, the oldest of whom is following in his father’s auctioneering footsteps. When

Randy isn’t connecting with an auction audience, you can find him on a snowboard in the winter, on a wake board in the summer months or on his acreage in Sandpoint, Idaho. Stokes Auction Group, located in Edgewood, Washington specializes in supporting non-profit agencies and charitable causes in reaching their fundraising goals. Their team serves groups of all sizes in their efforts to achieve financial success.

art day Each year children, families and friends of JDRF come together, put their creative hats on and make memorable gifts to present to our guests the night of the One Night – Unmask the Cure Gala. Art Day was held at JDRF offices on December 7, 2013 and continued with National Charity League members working on projects off-site as well. The children painted personalized ceramic hearts to be used as a part of guest stewardship. We hope you enjoy the masterpieces created especially for the One Night – Unmask the Cure Gala. On behalf of JDRF Staff and Gala Committee, a special thank you to Jeanine Dougherty for making the event a huge success.
