LATYMER FOUNDATION
Our vision is to be the leading co-educational school in the United Kingdom, providing young people from all backgrounds with a life-changing education that equips and inspires them to make a positive impact on society and to excel in the wider world.
Introductions
I am honoured to serve as the Head of a school which is redefining how independent schools can make a genuine and meaningful contribution to their communities. Latymer has been 400 years in the making, and over that time it has grown from feeding, clothing and educating ‘eight poore boyes’ of Hammersmith to a diverse school community of more than 1400 boys and girls aged seven to 18.
Our sector-leading bursary programme offers one of the highest numbers of free places, with the average award being 83% of fees, and this year we were able to offer a bursary to one in four of our new Y7 students. Our bursary holders flourish here and while the disadvantage gap continues to widen, their results remain on a par with their fee paying peers at GCSE and A Level.
Our Social Impact Report illustrates the achievements of our bursary and partnership programmes and I am delighted to share them with you as we continue to ensure all our students meet and, indeed, exceed their potential during their time with us.
SUSAN WIJERATNA Head, Latymer Upper School
This year we are celebrating the 400th anniversary of Latymer Foundation, which has been providing education to young people in Hammersmith continuously since it was established. These days, the Foundation seeks to have social impact through the education it offers its students, an education which is accessible to families from the widest possible range of socio-economic backgrounds thanks to our sector-leading bursary programme, and through the partnerships Latymer has with local schools, charities and community groups. It gives me great pleasure to share with you our first ever Social Impact Report which shines a light on a few of the amazing initiatives that have been running at Latymer for many years, as well as new programmes which have been established in response to requests from our local partners. We hope you enjoy hearing about our approaches to measuring impact, and that you will be in touch if you would like to be involved or learn more.
AMANDA SCOTT Executive Director, the Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith
Our Theory of Change for addressing disadvantage in our local community
Like many charities, we have developed a Theory of Change to outline how our activities strategically link up with our ultimate goals as a Foundation. Clarifying our intended immediate outcomes provides our metrics for impact measurement, and a means of tracking and refining our strategies.

Life-changing bursaries
Thanks to the success of our Inspiring Minds campaign, the number of students who benefit from a bursary funded by Latymer Foundation has hugely increased since 2014. We are on track to being able to provide bursaries to 1 in 4 of our students in our Upper School in 2024-25. We provide bursaries for entry at 7+ to join Latymer Prep; 11+ to the Upper School; or 16+ to join our Sixth Form. On average, bursaries cover 83% of school fees and often also include free lunches, uniforms, trips and activities, music or drama lessons.
Total students on a bursary
Bursary students achieve fantastic academic outcomes to support their ongoing aspirations, in line with their classmates.
In Summer 2023:
81% of GCSE grades secured by bursary students were 8-9
70% of A Levels grades secured by bursary students were A*/A
86% of bursary students went to their first choice university
Adding academic value: bursary students’ GCSE scores compared with national predictions from their Year 7 standardised scores.
Bursary students achieve greater academic outcomes than their individual predictions, even given their high ability when they join us.

Outcomes after School
University destinations of Latymer students graduating in 2023
Many bursary alumni stay in touch after they graduate, allowing us to learn about long-term outcomes. We conducted a large-scale alumni survey in 2020 and will be repeating and expanding the exercise next year.
When I walked in in Year 7, I was this really shy girl, I was really quiet – and now, I am so much more outgoing, I have so much more faith in myself and my own abilities. My time at Latymer sparked a passion for Chemistry and now I’m going to study that at uni – I never would have been able to do that, if it wasn’t for the Latymer education, because it made me realise exactly what I’m interested in, and that I have the tools that I need to pursue that.
OYIN, CLASS OF 2021; STUDENT AT MIT
It would not be an exaggeration to say that my bursary completely changed my life. I was made aware of possibilities and what I could achieve, having those choices at Latymer made me realise I could do so many things with my life. The teachers, and the environment in general, opened my eyes to what could be achieved.
KAINE, CLASS OF 2015; ECONOMIST AT CAPITAL ECONOMICS
Latymer was a formative experience for me. I was very fortunate to be exposed to the best education there, even if only for two years of sixth form. They put me miles ahead.

Community partnerships
Alongside the significant impact of our bursary programme, we engage in a range of partnership activities each year in order to also reach a wider number of children and young people in our local community, with a particular emphasis on those least likely to have these opportunities otherwise.
Overall in 2022-23
3,000+
local children and young people directly benefited, coming from over 70 local state schools.
Core programmes
Supporting high-potential students eligible for meanstested bursaries in Year 5 into Year 6, with engaging Maths, English and Science lessons and information and aspirations for independent school bursary options.
29% of students in these schools are eligible for Free School Meals. In 16 of our partner schools, the proportion is 40% or higher.
Our community spent over
3,900 hours (staff) and over
4,300 hours (students) working in these partnerships.
A wide range of immersive secondary school topics taught to Year 6 students, particularly those needing a boost to their confidence ahead of the transition to Year 7.
Students in Year 7 and 8 from local secondary schools enjoy programming and robotics, with guest talks from speakers in a range of STEM fields to highlight options for career paths.
Oracy, debate and critical thinking initiative for students in Year 5 or Year 6, coached by our experienced sixth form students.
Keeping the fun in Maths, students from Years 5 and 6 learn new problem-solving skills in mathematical puzzles and games that test and inspire their knowledge.
A highlight for me since starting working with Latymer Partnerships is when I heard children return from a music workshop and say ‘I learnt so much, I wish I could do it again! Everyday!’

Case study: music school
The Tri-borough Music Hub Saturday Music School has been held at Latymer Upper in different forms for over 20 years. We currently have over 250 pupils taking part in 6 ensembles and 2 choirs, with over 270 instrumental and vocal lessons delivered each week. Our pupils are representative of West London and attend 97 different West London schools. The generosity of Latymer Foundation provides access to music education to all West London pupils and families.

Enrichment activities
Local students are invited to join us at events sharing information and raising aspirations in a range of enrichment areas, from sports and arts through to vocational and HE information:
• Attending music recitals
• Attending school plays
• Free music workshops
• Free hockey or cricket coaching

Case study: holiday camps
The Latymer Foundation have once again supported LMP Action throughout 2023 with access to amazing facilities and introduction to Latymer students that have used their spare time to support our initiatives.
LMP Action have run 10 weeks of holiday provision from Latymer Upper School which has allowed us to offer 2500 spaces over the year, to children who are predominantly on free school meals or from families that have been identified as needing support.

Student social leadership
Students across the School are enthusiastic about giving their time to charities and others in the community. In 2022-23 our students contributed the following:
4,000+ hours of student volunteering
£45,000 raised for charities
Working with 30+ charities and 50 schools
Latymerians across the years have told us about the impact their time at the School had on them and their sense of social responsibility:
Service is the soul of Latymer and it makes it stand out from any other private school.
2023 GRADUATE
My time volunteering in debate sessions for local state schools and the trip to Uganda definitely instilled in me a belief that if you have the means to give back, or the chance to lower the ladder for someone else, you must.
2014 GRADUATE
Latymer gave me life experiences that I could never have achieved otherwise, and I have always wanted to give back in any small way that I can to people who come from a similar socioeconomic background to myself.
2014 BURSARY GRADUATE
For a long time we have held volunteering and social responsibility to be a key component of a Latymerian education, enriching our students’ personal development alongside their academics. Going forwards, we are ambitious to increase the opportunities for student volunteering, and awareness of social leadership beyond the School gates, including our younger year groups. Our ‘Active Citizens Programme’ will nurture and encourage Community Champions amongst our students, the launch coinciding with our 400th anniversary in 2024.
