The Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith was established in 1624 ‘to clothe and educate eight poore boyes’ in Hammersmith. It remains true to the vision of its founder Edward Latymer to this day, offering a first class education to academically able students from all walks of life.
One step closer to needs-blind admissions to Latymer
The incredible generosity of our school community has enabled us achieve our campaign goal: to raise enough funds to offer bursaries to 1 in 4 of our pupils by the time of our 400th anniversary. This is the first significant stage of the journey towards our dream of needs-blind admissions to Latymer.

Letter from the Head
As I reflect on my first year as Head, I feel immense pride in our Latymer community. 400 years on from Edward Latymer’s original bequest, we have achieved something truly remarkable. This year, 1 in 4 students across the Upper School will be benefitting from a bursary.
This success is all thanks to you, our community, who have been with us every step of the way since our Inspiring Minds campaign began. Over the last decade we have rapidly expanded our bursary provision, from offering means-tested fee assistance to 1 in 10 of our students in 2014 to 1 in 4 this academic year, with an average fee remission of 83%. Your support has grown with us, and to this day over 6,000 individuals have contributed financially to Inspiring Minds, alongside hours of their time. From staff to students, parents to alumni, each member
of our Latymer family has played a role, and our collective spirit has shone through every initiative we’ve undertaken.
This community spirit is one of the many reasons I was drawn to Latymer, and I have seen it embodied continuously over the past year.
At the launch of our 400th Anniversary, students from all year groups came together to solve an Escape Room devised by teachers. Our Prefects volunteered to connect with our alumni and vice versa, bringing together Latymerians of all generations. I was proud that pupils in the Prep built businesses through the Grow a Fiver initiative, donating their profits to the Prep Bursary Fund.
And it doesn’t stop at our gates. In 2023/24, our Year 12 students volunteered for over 30 local causes for Service in the Community, including our Saturday School programme, where Latymerians mentor local primary school Year 6 students. Latymer is committed to being a good neighbour and we will continue to show our students the value of giving back to their community.
Beyond our sector-leading bursary programme, our brilliant A-level and GCSE results highlight the dedication of our students, families and teachers. 81% of our students received all A*/A grades at A-Level and 94% scored all 7-9 at GCSE (A/A* equivalent), our highest results in ‘normal times’*. Attainment amongst our bursary holders remains on par with their fee-paying peers – of the 40 bursary recipients in the Class of 2024, 6 left Latymer as medics, 4 to Oxbridge and the rest are on their way to an array of university destinations both in the UK and abroad; often the first in their family to attend tertiary education.
Looking ahead, our new Middle School Curriculum Reform places us at the forefront of innovative and accessible education. Our current Year 7 cohort will be the first to benefit from our new curriculum, and the positive impact of this change was reflected in the fierce competition for our 11+ places this year.
With interest in Latymer continuing to increase, so too does the need for bursary support. At 11+, 1 in 3 applicants indicated that they would require a bursary to take up a place and the imminent imposition of VAT on our fees will only increase the number of current and prospective families who will need our financial support, if they are to study at our School.
Whilst we celebrate the achievements of Inspiring Minds, we must remember that our work is not done and we now need to look forward, as we strive towards our next goal: needs-blind admissions. We have a responsibility to current and future Latymerians, to ensure our School continues to lead the way in providing lifechanging opportunities to academically ambitious students, regardless of financial background. We’ve already seen what can be done through the power of a united community. As we take the next steps in our journey, let us continue educating the brilliant, open-minded, and collaborative individuals who are shaping the future.

Campaign events – bringing the Latymer community together since 2014
The journey of our Inspiring Minds campaign has been marked by a series of engaging and impactful events that have captivated the Latymer community and beyond. Here is a selection of some of the many events delivered over the course of the campaign.
Inspiring Minds Gala
Our biennial Inspiring Minds Galas not only raise significant funds for bursaries but also generate widespread awareness about the importance of providing equal educational opportunities to all students. The last three galas combined have raised over £5.5m for bursaries.
Inspirational talks
Inspirational online talks from members of the Latymer community came into their own during the Covid-19 lockdown, when the community pulled together to keep Latymer entertained and engaged. Over fifty online talks engaged members of our community all over the world and raised £35,000 in the process.
Inspiring Minds Reception
One of the events which sets the stage for the campaign's success every year is the annual Inspiring Minds reception, we invite all those who have supported us over the last year to come together.
Prep School challenge and community events
Every year the Prep students and staff organise various challenge and community events to raise funds for Prep bursaries. Pupils take part in a Swimathon or a buildyour-own-business initiative, Grow a Fiver, to support their fellow students.

Community events
A variety of innovative events have been organised to engage our community. These have ranged from fundraising tours to talks and seasonal events. Highlights include tours of the Imperial War Museum with Latymerian and historian Taylor Downing (1971) and wreath making classes from Latymer parents.
Latymer Laughs comedy night
As soon as the Covid-19 restrictions lifted, we called upon the comedians in our community to host an evening of joy. We were so grateful to Bill Bailey, Shaparak Khorsandi and Mel Giedroyc, who agreed to join us along with a host of alumni comedians for a laugh out loud evening raising over £8,000 for bursaries.
Staff panto
The biennial Staff Panto sells out every time and has raised over £40k for bursaries thanks to the amazing staff who volunteer their time and talents. Over the years we have been treated to renditions of Cinderella, Aladdin and, most recently, Peter Pan.

It takes a village to support bursaries
Bursaries are woven into the fabric of Latymer’s ethos, and we are proud to receive support from every corner of our community. This includes our teaching and support staff and our students, who are some of our most passionate supporters.
Here we highlight just a few of the stars who go above and beyond in their support of bursaries.
Mr Paul Goldsmith
Teacher of Politics & Economics
Since joining Latymer in 2010, Paul has inspired countless Politics and Economics students, not only through his talent as a teacher, but also through his championing of our bursaries programme. From starring in our biennial staff panto, to volunteering at Foundation events and supporting bursaries through a monthly direct debit.
Paul is a true ambassador for the Latymer Foundation and was inspired by his own father’s experiences as a bursary beneficiary at another independent school in the 1950s. As Paul says, the support his father received “ completely changed his life. It changed the life of his children and his grandchildren and probably his greatgrandchildren .”
When I found out that there was a bursary scheme, I wanted to be involved as much as possible, so I contribute part of my salary.
Mrs Theresa Savin
Catering Assistant
Theresa has been at Latymer for over thirty years and every day she helps ensure that our students are well-nourished and ready to learn. Theresa and the rest of the catering team have been very creative in finding ways to raise funds for bursaries, including donating the proceeds from the sale of some catering equipment. Furthermore, without the support of our brilliant catering team, we would not be able to host the many Foundation events which raise money for bursaries.
I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping, even if it's a small thing like just serving the teas and coffees at a fundraiser. If that goes towards one child getting a bursary, that's really important. I've been here thirty years and that's why I'm still here. I love Latymer.
Mr Scott Higgins
Head Groundsman
Scott works tirelessly to keep our sports facilities in beautiful condition, creating the space for our students to excel on the playing field, as well as in the classroom through his support of bursaries. Wood Lane regularly hosts professional sports teams to train on our grounds (South Africa, Fiji, and Japan to name but a few). And when they do, Scott is there to collect signed jerseys from these teams, which we can then auction to raise funds for our Inspiring Minds campaign.
Ms Andrea Rutterford
Principal of Latymer Prep
Mrs Amy Sellars
Assistant Head (Lower School)
Celeste & Lucia
RAIS£ Senior Ambassadors
Andrea has been the Principal of our Prep school since 2017, and has led the Prep Bursary Fund to new heights. Beyond her work as a passionate advocate for Latymer’s Inspiring Minds campaign, she fosters a sense of social responsibility and compassion in all of her pupils. Under her leadership, the pupils of the Prep school take part in the annual Grow a Fiver challenge, using £5 seed money to develop their own business idea and donating the profits to the Prep Bursary Fund. This past year, they raised an incredible £4,790 from that one activity.
It means so much to me when I see that we are going to be able to change the life of a child because I could have been that child. I had a really patchy education and had to work really hard beyond school to make my way through the world. So I really understand what it's like. What this school gives you is aspirations and the idea that anything is possible.
RAIS£, our student-led fundraising group, was founded in 2016, under Amy’s guidance. For the past nine years, she has volunteered her time to support our students in raising over £45,000 for our annual Bursaries Appeal through discos, bake sales, sweatshirts and more! She has even dyed her hair blue as part of a RAIS£ initiative.
“My favourite RAIS£ activities, I have dyed my hair blue, I have had henna tattoos done. I even did “the Floss” once with several Year 7 tutors.
Our two Senior Ambassadors, Celeste and Lucia (Year 12), have led RAIS£ this year. They and a group of 20 pupils from all year groups have run a varied programme of initiatives like Cupid’s Candy and the new “Latymer Teacher Top Trumps”. Beyond their fundraising efforts, Celeste and Lucia are vocal ambassadors for our bursaries programme amongst their fellow Latymerians, speaking at assemblies and building student engagement with our Inspiring Minds Campaign.
I think it's really important to give back to the school that's just given so much to me and has always been there to support me. – lucia
The transformational power of a Latymer education
When our Inspiring Minds campaign began 10 years ago, the goal was clear: to raise sufficient funds to provide means-tested bursaries for as many as 1 in 4 of our pupils, by our 400th anniversary in 2024.
This would not only foster a diverse, ‘rounded and grounded’ community for all our pupils and staff, but it would offer an often lifechanging education to promising and talented children who could otherwise not afford the school fees. Thanks to the belief and commitment of our donor community, 630 young people have been given the gift of a Latymer education since the launch of our campaign.
Here we profile some of the exceptional Latymerians who have benefitted from a bursary. Their stories are undoubtedly the most powerful testament to the difference a Latymer education can make to a student's life path.
Reaching our 1 in 4 goal is the first stage on our journey towards a “needs-blind” admissions process, so that any child – like Camila, Liam, Laura, Apple and Amir – with excellent academic potential can benefit from a Latymer education regardless of their family’s financial status.
Camila (2010)
Camila grew up on the Queens Park estate and joined Latymer in the Sixth Form thanks to a full bursary.
After reading English Literature at the University of Bristol, Camila was awarded scholarships to cover the costs of her Law Conversion, Bar exams, and LLM in International Law at UCL. She is now a human rights barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, specialising in international human rights, public law, civil liberties, and asylum.
Liam (2020)
Liam joined Latymer in Year 7 thanks to a bursary and in Sixth Form he benefitted from the US Latymerians Bursary, funded by our alumni community in the USA. At Latymer, Liam was heavily involved in music, drama and debate, but his proudest achievement was revitalising our Model United Nations Society, which continues to thrive today.
My scholarship to Latymer taught me the importance of ensuring that all children are given the same opportunities for success, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. I support Latymer’s campaign to increase the number of bursaries it offers, to begin to address the effects of economic inequality. The best education should not be reserved only for the children of parents who can afford it.
With the support of the Universities and Careers Department, Liam made a brilliant application to Claremont McKenna College in Southern California, where he recently graduated Magna Cum Laude as a PPE & Economics major. At university, Liam continued Model UN and used his public speaking skills to represent his college as 1 of 20 top students at Duke & the University of North Carolina’s national PPE colloquium in 2024. Now that he has graduated, Liam will start work at Accenture Federal Services, helping to build the strategy that will guide the USA into the future.
If I could describe Latymer in one word, it would be opportunity. Throughout my time at Latymer, I was rarely cognizant of socioeconomic differences amongst my peers and was able to take advantage of their broad array of opportunities that I would have otherwise never been able to afford; from intensive performing arts and music training to volunteering and elective courses.
Laura (2013)
Laura joined Latymer in 2011 for her first year of Sixth Form. Outside of her core studies in English, French, Music, and Classical Civilisations, Laura enjoyed the rich extracurricular life of the school – among other things taking singing lessons, joining the chamber choir, competing in French debating competitions, and (most importantly) competing in the "Strictly Latymer" ballroom dancing contest for 2013.
After graduating from Latymer in 2013, Laura studied English and French (Joint Hons) at Oxford University, spending a year of that time on exchange at the Sorbonne in Paris, and graduating with a 2.1. She went on to work in humanitarian aid, leading clearance operations for landmines and explosive remnants of war in Ukraine and later in Angola, before broadening her focus to work on humanitarian response coordination in Syria. She currently works as Deputy Director for the Northeast Syria (NES) NGO Forum.
Latymer broadened my awareness of the range of experience and adventure that life has to offer. I'll always be grateful to Latymer for empowering me with the mindset to both seek out and create my own opportunities in life. Beyond a quality education and truly excellent teachers, I left Latymer with valuable life skills, memories, and life-long friends.
Amir (2018)
Amir joined Latymer in Year 7 on a full bursary in 2011. While a student with us, Amir balanced his sporting and musical interests with his academic studies; a skill he continued to hone when he studied medicine at Jesus College. Having recently graduated from Cambridge with a Distinction (in the top 15% of his cohort) and ranked 2/300 in his final year clinical exams, Amir aspires to specialise in Neurosurgery. He credits the work experience he completed under a Latymer parent at UCLH for inspiring his passion for the field. Amir recently returned to Latymer in May to speak at the Latymer400 Gala, where he said:
Without a Latymer bursary, I would have never met the people and had the opportunities that have inspired me to be where I am now. Latymer provided me the confidence to take opportunities and roles I never would have thought I could. A dream of mine is to return a bursary to Latymer in the name of my mother, who has supported me unconditionally throughout my life, in the hopes of changing another child’s life, just as you have mine.
Apple (2020)
Apple joined Latymer for Sixth Form in 2018, supported by a bursary. She picked up a typical Latymerian schedule of hockey games, a full academic load, drama and art. And she excelled. After taking some time out after graduation to focus on her singing and modelling career, Apple joined Downing College, Cambridge to study History of Art in 2023.
Apple recently returned to the School to share her love of art history by giving a talk to the students of the History of Art Society on Gentile Bellini. She credits her success and passion for her subject to the compassion and support she received from her teachers at Latymer.
Not only did Latymer help me academically flourish, but the kindness and generosity bestowed upon me, changed me as a person and helped me blossom into a much more confident woman today. Without Latymer, I truly believe I would not be where I am or who I am today. I hope one day I am able to give back and help another student flourish at this wonderful school.
Service in the Community
Latymer Upper School cultivates social responsibility and active citizenship through its well-established Service in the Community programme. Latymer’s focus on social inclusion and the role of ‘good neighbours’ is as strong now as it was 400 years ago. Our Year 12 students dedicate at least an hour a week to volunteering during autumn and spring terms, with many continuing longer. As well as benefiting the community, students are equipped with valuable skills that contribute to their Latymer diploma.
This year, 196 Year 12 students volunteered for over 30 local causes such as education, homelessness support and sports. They assisted in placements such as the after-school provision at Rugby Portobello Trust, reading clubs at The Good Shepherd Primary School and volunteering at Oxfam and Royal Trinity Hospice shops.
Beyond these placements, 25 students volunteered as teaching assistants and debate coaches in core programmes like Primary Debating and Saturday School. Additionally, some students explored their interests by assisting with music at Latymer Prep School and Tri-Borough Music Hub or our Saturday morning STEM Academy, while others secured selfarranged placements in fields such as medicine, care and rowing. Notably, at least eight students extended their placements to contribute towards their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
Our programme caters to all interests, with placements categorised under ‘Children and Young People’, ‘Colleges and Schools’, ‘Out in the Community’ and ‘Sports and Outdoors.’ Opportunities range from specific events like packing festive food hampers to ongoing commitments supporting local charities.
Imperial Health Charity
Sophie is hoping to study Medicine at university and arranged a volunteering placement with Imperial Health Charity. Sophie worked on a ward and enjoyed spending time with patients and made a meaningful contribution. Sophie said: “I feel like after volunteering at Imperial Health Charity I have a really good understanding of how the healthcare sector and charities work in general. Through volunteering on a ward I learnt a lot about the roles of various healthcare professionals and where I, as a volunteer, fit into that team dynamic to deliver patient care.”
We were also delighted to partner with Imperial Health Charity and Chelsea FC Foundation to run a staff wellbeing programme for NHS Staff at Wood Lane. Every Tuesday evening, up to 100
NHS staff play football and enjoy team bonding, supported by four Latymer student volunteers, one of whom said: “My Service in the Community was based around providing NHS workers with the opportunity to play competitive football every week. It is important to provide this so that they remain active and have time to enjoy time with their colleagues.”
We have received constant praise from both patients and staff regarding Sophie’s proactive, kind, compassionate and caring nature. We are all so impressed with her and she often goes above and beyond to improve the hospital experience for patients. In addition, Sophie was recently made a Volunteer Champion, which is a position of leadership within our team and she helped us conduct a Selection Event for our next cohort of the Youth Volunteering Programme.
IMPERIAL HEALTH CHARITY
Primary Debating
Primary Debating is a core Partnerships programme that has been held at Latymer since 2009. Approximately 80 Year 6 pupils from local primary schools take part in weekly debating sessions and are taught exclusively by Year 12 students. The 15-week programme culminates in an inter-school Grand Finale with a cup presented to the best debater.
Natasha and Archie ran this year’s programme with the guidance of Jonny White, Head of History. Natasha reflected on her experience: “Through co-running the Primary Debating programme, a Latymer outreach initiative for primary school students from local schools, I hope that I have improved the debating skills and confidence of young children. I assumed responsibility and believe I demonstrated leadership through my proactiveness, planning and communication….I presented the proposed session format to our Y12 team and delivered debating training to allow them to support their primary school groups, using a ‘train the trainer’ approach. I believe that this planning enabled the programme to run smoothly and effectively!”
They both led the project with a skill and level of commitment and forethought… I think that this was 'outstanding' community work which led to tangible and positive outcomes for around 60 local school children. They should both be pleased that with their leadership the rest of the group were behind them

10 Years of Progress
How daunting it seemed back in 2014 to embark on our Inspiring Minds campaign with its goal of raising £40 million. Yet that was the quantum that was needed to allow Latymer to provide bursaries for as many as 1 in 4 of its Upper School students by 2024, and we would need to raise even more if we wanted to bolster our endowment, so that at least some of these bursaries were backed by long term funding. No other school in the UK had ever set itself such an ambitious target, yet I felt certain that the Latymer community would lend us its heartfelt backing and so indeed it proved to be the case.
Our school community has supported the expansion of Latymer’s bursary programme since 2004 and this made it possible for us to increase the number of bursaries from 7 in 2002 to 123 in 2014, but that still only represented 1 in 10 of our student body.
Latymer Upper School has always been a distinctive school, fee-paying to a greater or lesser extent for all of its history, but with a very different ethos to most of the UK’s “public” schools. Latymer has flourished most at the times in its history when it has been able to recruit its students from the widest possible range of socio-economic backgrounds, and this diversity energises the classroom experience and benefits all who teach or study here. This distinctive aspect of a Latymer education is the reason many parents choose to send their children to our school, and our staff choose to work here. Likewise, our alumni recognize the beneficial impact that their “rounded and grounded” schooling had on their adult lives and feel strongly that the opportunity to study at Latymer should be available to academically ambitious young people from all backgrounds.
Would our alumni, staff, students and their families rally round to help us more than double our provision in time for our 400th anniversary in 2024?
The answer was a resounding yes!
Over the last decade some 6,000 individuals have contributed their time, expertise and
money to help us achieve our aim. Hundreds of lengths have been swum, miles run along the towpath, countless brownies baked and film nights and discos organised in order to raise money for our Inspiring Minds campaign. Latymer staff and students, past and present, and their families have given us their support and collectively an incredible £49 million has been raised over the last 10 years, thanks to gifts large and small; each and every gift vital to our overall success and hugely appreciated.
Latymer has benefitted from outstanding leadership over many years and it has been wonderful to welcome back to our recent 400th anniversary events many of those who laid the groundwork for this campaign, including former Heads Colin Diggory and Peter Winter, as well as former Chair of Governors, James Graham (always remembering James’ incomparable predecessor, the late Professor Richard Perham). For championing our Inspiring Minds Campaign, and for their vision and support, I thank former Head David Goodhew, our current Head Su Wijeratna, current and former Prep Principals Stuart Dorrian and Andrea Rutterford and all my SMT colleagues, as well as current and former Latymer Governors. I salute all those who have volunteered their time, expertise or effort in support of Inspiring Minds. This groundswell of community support carried us forward even during the dark days of Covid, which saw the Latymer family temporarily dispersed. The strategic vision, enthusiasm and philanthropic support of our Inspiring Minds Campaign Board has been invaluable and I am hugely grateful to each and every member. I would also like to make special mention to the members of our 1624 Legacy Society – it was thanks to a legacy that the Latymer Foundation was created and it will be thanks to legacies that the long-term future of Latymer’s bursary programme will be secured. However, I save my final thanks for my wonderful colleagues (current and former) in the Latymer Foundation Office. Their enthusiasm, resilience and commitment made this campaign possible and our school will be a better place as a result. Over the last decade, some 630 young people have been given the gift of a Latymer education thanks to the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of so many in our wonderful school community and, on their behalf, I salute you and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Social Impact Stats:
Our bursary students receive a lifechanging education at Latymer and are supported to achieve exceptional academic outcomes on a par with their fee-paying peers. These achievements demonstrate a narrowing of the disadvantage gap, which goes hand in hand with our ultimate goal of ‘needsblind’ admissions at Latymer. When potential is the only barrier to entry, there is no limit to what can be achieved.
1 in 3
of our bursary graduates were the first in their family to go to university
93%
of our full bursary holders achieve five or more GCSEs at 7-9, compared with only 40% of disadvantaged students nationally who were high attainers in Year 6
Since 2014, our bursary students have achieved an average of 77% 8-9s at GCSE and 73% A*/As at A-Level compared to 76% and 75% for our fee-paying students.
In a survey to our 2024 graduating students:
74% of bursary respondents said Latymer had further increased their aspirations
83% of bursary respondents said Latymer had increased their existing HE and career awareness

1624 Society
The 1624 Society was created to recognise those who have made provision for the Latymer Foundation in their will. Legacies play a key role in building our endowment and help us to protect our founder’s legacy for future generations of Latymerians.

At Latymer, I didn’t just grow academically but I also developed as a person. I was taught how to be mentally tough. I learned to be happy when I succeed but be happier when I fail and nourish my weaknesses. Latymer taught me resilience and how to have hope. They believed in me and treated me as an individual, something that I never experienced in other educational environments. This taught me how unique and different people are and they should be treated accordingly.
