SEPTEMBER: HOUSE OF LORDS DINNER

ALUMNI EVENTS

A splendid dinner in the Cholmondeley Room at the House of Lords preceded by drinks on the terrace made for a special autumn evening enjoyed by a number of Latymerians and their partners. Speeches and toasts were given by our host, Lord WHITTY (1961) and the Head. Larry Whitty was General Secretary of the Labour Party and subsequently a Minister in DEFRA during the Blair Government and he remains an active working peer. We are grateful for his facilitation of this event. Ashok ARORA, John RIGNAL (both 1985), Nick BAXTER (1987) and Chris MITRA-HALL (2000) with partners.

The Head with Alex HILL, Sam SMITH and Besar ZASELLA (all 2014)

NOVEMBER: LATYMERIANS’ DINNER A browse through the Archives to the backdrop of music by Jay Sean, Jungle, White Lies (all Latymerian chart musicians) eased early arrivals in to the mood until the bar opened. Very soon memories and news were being enthusiastically exchanged. 131 enjoyed a fine meal and good company in the nicely decorated School Hall. The guest speaker Dr Harpal KUMAR (1982) CEO of Cancer Research UK was an inspiring speaker both about his own journey through Latymer - steered in to rowing, science and on to Cambridge by teachers like Jim Clark and Chris Hammond; (steps that shaped his life) and on his current leadership role in the UK’s research strategy against cancer. Both Harpal and the Head received standing ovations. The Head laid out his vision for greatly increased bursary provision at Latymer and challenged all in attendance to join the many alumni that already participate in supporting the School’s bursary programme.

There was a good turnout for an informal social evening at Racks Bar, Clifton to meet up with each other and Nigel Orton. The event was open to all living or working in the region and it was good to be joined by Mark NYMAN (1984) and Bill FAIRNEY (1959).

STAFF NEWS

n We note with much regret the passing of Stephen Whitehead, a former Physics teacher (2006-9) who succumbed to cancer in November. Our thoughts are with his young family. n We said farewell and a huge thank you at Christmas to Lisa Cullen who has worked for 3 years in the Development Office. Lisa met and corresponded with many Latymerians through her work on the annual Bursaries Appeal. She will be missed but we wish her well with her upcoming travel plans. n We are proud of our staff and their many achievements. For example, our Art teacher Dermott Flynn has just illustrated the Poet Laureate, Dame Carol Ann Duffy’s new book, The Wren Boys. Andrew and Jane Rees with their sons, Rob (2010; next to Jane) and Ed (2007) with his girlfriend at Andrew’s retirement party.

The Wren Boys

n Andrew Rees retired this Christmas after 39 years teaching Modern Languages and leading as Head of Department since 1993, following being Head of General Studies. He was Head of General Studies in the late ‘80s. He ran many language exchanges, and led Activity Week trips. Andrew has been widely acknowledged as a caring form tutor. We wish Andrew a long and happy retirement. Any former pupil who wishes to pass on well wishes can send them c/o the Development Office, or via LatymeriansNetwork@latymer-upper.org n The School’s Boat Club named an eight after our former Head of Boats, Jim Clark in December. Jim, and his wife Lin were present for the ceremony along with a number of his former pupils he had coached. After his PE career Jim became a popular Head of Design Technology at Latymer and retired in 2010.

n Schools contain many support staff apart from pupils and their teachers. It was very sad that just after the end of last term, one of the Facilities team, Lewis Harris collapsed and died at work. Louie would be known to some recent leavers for his work around the site, he was popular, hardworking and always helpful with a good sense of humour.

n We were pleased for Ruth Caleb OBE, a Latymer Foundation Governor from 1997 to 2012, who was recognised in November with a BAFTA Tribute. Ruth has been making outstanding TV for over 50 years, she has won three BAFTAs and been nominated a further seven times. n Gubby Ayida DM FRCOG has become a Latymer Foundation Governor. Gubby is a consultant and divisional medical director at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Prompted to remember Latymer before the A4 was built through the site: I remember Mr and Mrs Wiggins teaching in Rivercourt House and a Sixth Form debate in its upstairs room. I acquired the name ‘pussyfoot’ for my incompetence at sports, marketed the offspring of my pet mouse, sold a rabbit’s skeleton to the Biology Department for 10 shillings and sang in the choir. Yours sincerely, Dr Michael T DEANS (1964)

Recalling happy school days – music and rowing I have recently retired from teaching, but have continued with my ministerial career which, since I was ordained in 1991, has gone

alongside my other work. Just a few weeks ago I was welcomed into the Team Ministry of the West London area of the United Reformed Church and have begun a close association with our ‘cause’ in Queens Park. Although my days at Latymer are now far behind me I remember with pretty much unmixed pleasure my time at the school. In 1960 we moved down as a family from Scotland and it was a really happy experience to encounter an establishment that combined high expectations with a genuinely liberal approach to teacher pupil relations. Also, there was top level music making and rowing, which I also greatly enjoyed. I would be delighted to hear from fellow former pupils. Long live Latymer, and all it stands for!

BURSARIES APPEAL 2015/16 Following the record breaking 2014/15 annual Bursaries Appeal at Latymer, it seemed fitting to launch the 2015/16 Appeal with a pop – of champagne corks at a party for supporters. The theme of the evening was a celebration of the power our community has to transform young lives. Each year hundreds of donors join together with gifts large and small to create new bursaries so that bright and talented local children can continue to access a Latymer education. Among the guests at this year’s launch party were parents and Latymerians, Governors and staff, some who live locally and others who had made the journey from as far afield as Canada. The Head, David Goodhew introduced a short film, featuring some of the appeal’s long standing supporters and some of our younger donors! To watch the film and find out how every gift really makes a difference please visit www.latymer-upper.org/support-us/bursaries. The aim of this year’s appeal is to fund another five full bursaries for children joining Latymer in September 2016.

The pupil led RAISE club has been hard at work, selling badges to mark Founder’s Day, running a gingerbread decorating stall at the Christmas Fair and as term broke up, delivering sweets to friends and teachers, with the help of Latymer’s very own Santa (Dr Hardy). Aided by the Development Office Intern, Jade ATMORE (2015), the club have raised over £800 for the Bursaries Appeal, and have lots more events planned for the Spring Term. More ‘grown up’ events in the Development Office diary include a cooking masterclass with Rowley Leigh at Leiths Kitchens and a container gardening demonstration by celebrity gardener Gay Search. To check out the full calendar of Bursaries Appeal events, please visit: www.latymer-upper.org/support-us/newsand-events/events. Events are open to all. If you want to join with the hundreds of others who now support Latymer’s annual Bursaries Appeal, you can make a gift online support.latymer-upper.org/donateto-the-bursaries-appeal.html or set up a Direct Debit by contacting Linn in the Development Office: 020 3004 0434

n James Renton Brown MURRAY (1954)

n Professor David Ian CESARANI OBE MA DPhil (1975)

n Michael Dereck Rugg EASEY (1957)

David passed away in October aged just 58. He was one of the leading exponents of modern Jewish History and an expert on the Holocaust. He read History at Queen’s College, Cambridge and after a year at New York’s Columbia University he took his doctorate at St Anthony’s College, Oxford.

n Peter ELLIOTT BA FCA (1946)

n William Chatterton BROWN (1927) Bill Brown was just shy of his 104th birthday when he passed away in November, our oldest living Latymerian at that time. An interview with Bill appears in our Annual Review 2013-14 and was featured on our website. Bill attended the 2013 Latymerians’ Dinner; still driving himself down from Lincoln, to be first in and last out of the School Hall and chatting freely for hours over a few pints! What was his secret? Bill

David authored or edited more than a dozen books; his 2006 book Becoming Eichmann won a National Jewish Book Award. Earlier in 2015 he published Final Solution: The Fate of the Jews 1933-45. He held academic positions at the Universities of Leeds and Manchester, Queen Mary College, University of London and at the Wiener Library in London, where he was Director for two periods in the 1990s. From 2000 to 2004 David was Professor of Modern Jewish History at the University of Southampton before taking up his role as Professor of Jewish History at Royal Holloway College, University of London and the Director of their Holocaust Research Centre.

OBITUARIES

We sadly record the passing of these Latymerians...

David was a frequent broadcaster and columnist for The Guardian and other newspapers; he also advised and contributed to numerous television and radio documentaries. He worked closely with the Holocaust Educational Trust, and advised the Government and the Imperial War Museum. In 2005 he was awarded an OBE for his work with the Home Office on Holocaust Memorial Day.

Bill enjoyed his time at School. He recalled care free days with a great set of teachers whom he came to like and meet socially after school. Two in particular were ‘Beaby’ Palmer, and ‘Sloggin’ Hagon.

David

Bill obtained his HNC in Electrical Engineering via an apprenticeship. He was in the RAF in WWII on special signals duties with commandos in both North Africa and the Mediterranean holding the rank of Flight Lieutenant. On one occasion he escaped from German imprisonment. He also took part in Operation Torch landing in Algiers to capture an airfield there and travelling behind enemy lines disrupting German posts.

n John-Paul DRYDEN MA (1980)

After the war Bill was a contracts engineer working throughout West Africa, the Middle East and UK. In recent years Bill was active with the RAF 44 Squadron Association at RAF Coningsby and retained his membership of Twickenham Rugby Club.

John-Paul was with the Financial Services Authority from 2001-2010, broken by 3 years as a Conseiller to the European Parliament. During this time he also worked with the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and the International Organization of Securities Commissions.

John-Paul studied at Jesus College, Cambridge gaining a 1st in Swedish and German, before going on to learn Norwegian at Uppsala University in Sweden. He was initially a banker with FennoScandia, and Swed Banks before he joined the Securities and Futures Authority. A spell at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as First Secretary in the EU team followed.

John-Paul

He had a great love of automobiles, and was proud to share his impressive automobile den/shrine at his Northwood home with visitors. Geoff was a loyal Watford FC supporter. He lived to be ecstatic about their promotion to the Premier League, but sadly not long enough to see them in action there. Geoff was a loving husband and father, and a fine friend. Rest in peace, my old friend.” Our condolences extend to his son, Mark (1982), wife Judy and their family.

n Peter Anthony Scott FARQUHAR MA (1964) Since 2010 he had been a Director at the Brunswick Group leading on financial services where his expertise on EU legislation and processes was an asset. His sudden death in October shocked his friends and colleagues.

n Geoffrey Salter EDWARD (1960) Geoff died in September after a long and difficult battle with cancer. Geoff’s long time school friend Hugh GRANT (1959) recalls, “We sat together in Form 2W in 1953, beginning a lifelong friendship. Geoff was one of a kind: quiet, thoughtful, always mature beyond his years, but with a wicked sense of humour. Examples of this humour in class included the ‘flying board duster’ and the ‘smoking chalk’ pranks. Geoff had learned jewellery design from part-time work while at Latymer. This became his career, managing several gift ware businesses, and then he bought and ran the company he had started with until retirement. He and Judy had three sons, a large family and enjoyed their retirement. In private Geoff was a “giver” who rode to the rescue of countless people in difficulty. He was a true people person and nothing was too much trouble for him. L to R: Geoff and Judy Edward with Hugh Grant

Peter studied History and English at Churchill College, Cambridge before embarking on a teaching career at Mill Hill School, as Head of English at Manchester Grammar School, lecturing at the University of Buckingham and finally working from 1989-2004 as a highly regarded Head of English at Stowe. Peter was a committed Christian, fully involved with the spiritual welfare of Stoics and staff. He prepared candidates for Confirmation and led Bible studies as well as often preaching in Chapel. After his retirement Peter devoted much of his time to Stowe Parish Church where he regularly worshiped and preached for many years. He also wrote a novel, Between Boy and Man. Our condolences extend to his brother, Ian (1970).

n John Hugh FENSOM (1949) John spent 5 years with London Transport prior to his National Service in the RAF. Thereafter, he was involved with signal engineering for Siemen and later British Rail Southern Region.

n Roy FLETCHER FCIB (1947) After his National Service in the British Army of the Rhine and a posting with Grindley’s Bank, Roy worked for 40 years at Lloyds Bank as a Senior Executive Officer. He raised his family of 4 children in Harrow.

n John HARDY MA FCIS (1945) John rowed in the School’s 1st VIII in 1944-45. He served in the RAF on leaving Latymer and then went up to Cambridge to read modern languages from 1948-51. John joined an international group of engineering companies, progressing to become a Director and the Company Secretary of Baker Perkins Holdings PLC. John was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators, serving on their Council for 28 years and acting as the Institute’s President in 1982.

n James MILLEN BSc (1935) Jim studied Mathematics and Physics at the Regent Street Polytechnic after Latymer, graduating with a London University external degree. He served in the RAF during WWII and then spent a decade in the civil service before joining the Atomic Energy Authority. Jim acted as Financial Controller for the National Institute of Nuclear Science and was involved in discussions about the supply and control of fissile materials in the International Atomic Energy agency in Vienna. He retired in 1982.

n William Brownlow MORTIMER (1952)

Eric

Bill started at Latymer in 1945 and felt at home from the beginning. The boys and staff had a very good and relaxed relationship and he fondly remembered many of the masters. He also made life-long friendships especially with John Davies, Dave Sanders and Jim McCabe who were known as the ‘terrible four’ at school. Bill’s greatest love was sport especially football and he was a passionate member of the Old Lat’s Football Club. Not only an important player, in a successful period of the Club, but always a very active referee once his playing days were over.

n Tom REYNOLDS MSc DIC FLS ARCS (1951) Tom was a graduate of Imperial College, London University. His career as a chemist was pursued in Kew Garden’s research labs, publishing many papers largely on Aloes. He became their Principle Scientific Officer and in retirement was a Senior Research Fellow, of Kew’s Jodrell Laboratory.

n Guy SMITH BSc FRAeS CEng (1942) Guy was proud that he had won a scholarship to Latymer from our own Foundation School. Recognising the power of that opportunity he was a supporter of our 1624 Society that supports the endowment of bursaries. Guy went on from Latymer to gain a 1st in Mechanical Engineering at King’s College, London before studying aeronautics at Imperial College. Guy later enjoyed a successful career working on aircraft engines, first at Bristol Aeroplane Company, to be taken over by Rolls Royce. Guy was Chief Engineer, and then Marketing Director of the Bristol Engine Division of Rolls Royce; finally as Director, Europe for Rolls Royce plc, Guy retired in 1983 and became an Independent Aviation Consultant to various companies in UK, France, Germany and the US.

n Professor Peter William Frank WHITTON MSc PhD (1941) Peter was a scholarship boy, joining Latymer in 1936. He was evacuated to Slough and Iver Heath during the war. He went on to study engineering at the University College of Southampton for his London BSc and later obtained his doctorate from Imperial College. He completed National Service in the Royal Corps of Signals. He entered academia and was the Foundation Dean in the Engineering Faculty of the University of the West Indies. Peter moved to Australia as Principal of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology producing many publications in metal deformation. Peter became Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Melbourne, and later the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor. Peter died last July, aged 90. Our condolences extend to his widow, Mary and their children and grandchildren.

n Eric Edward WILES (1949)

Eric’s civil funeral was held in Windsor Parish Church in October. Past mayors and councillors, in their formal robes, led a stately procession in to the church. Added poignancy was provided when the First Battalion Grenadier Guards marching past, following the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Windsor Castle, halted their playing and held their drum sticks still in respect. The service was followed by a reception at the town’s Guildhall. Eric was also very involved with flower growing and was President of the Windsor and Slough Chrysanthemum, Fuchsia and Pelargonium Society and also held the role of Show Secretary.

n John Francis WINKLER (1950) John died last October, aged 80. He had been the owner of Winkler International Ltd, an advertising agency.

n Anne Stean Mrs Anne Stean, widow of Dr Joshua Stein who was Latymer’s School Doctor for many years until his retirement in the 1980s, passed away in New York in August. The couple lived on the corner of King Street and Rivercourt Road where Dr Stein ran his surgery. Her nephews attended Latymer and we extend our condolences to her family. Anne was a friend and generous supporter of the School, funding a Stein Music Bursary to commemorate and honour her late husband. The fund provides musical instrument tuition to the School’s bursary pupils.

Eric passed away in September. Eric’s career was as a wholesale fruit merchant. He leaves behind his wife Heather, their two daughters and a granddaughter. He had served as an independent councillor for Old Windsor and was twice Mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead (1997-8 and 2005-6) and had escorted Queen on her 80th birthday public walkabout.

We are most grateful for a new bench that was given to the School for the Piazza by Jackie, widow of Denis JONES (1967) in his memory.
