Dr. Emily Letran Holiday Greetings from the Viet Nam Journal Team!

As we present the Winter Issue of the Los Angeles Tribune – Viet Nam Journal, we do so with a sense of pride and reflection. This season invites us to examine Growth as an evolution—of leadership, cultural influence, and global presence within the Vietnamese community.

This year, Vietnamese excellence has been distinctly visible on the international cultural stage through the Los Angeles Tribune International Film Festival. Under my leadership serving as Festival President, the event has emerged as a platform for cross-cultural dialogue and cinematic excellence. Of particular distinction is the award-winning documentary Book of Death, directed by Jenny Thai and produced by a team of Vietnamese refugees. The film’s recognition underscores the power of Vietnamese-led storytelling—bold, introspective, and globally resonant— demonstrating that stories rooted in history and humanity can transcend borders and speak to a universal conscience.

Equally compelling is the narrative of growth within the global business arena. At Lambosky, the leadership of Vice Presidents Lam Hoang My and Quarter Dinh reflects a new paradigm of Vietnamese executive influence. Their roles signify more than professional achievement; they represent trust, strategic vision, and the rising authority of Vietnamese leadership within international enterprises. This progression affirms that Vietnamese professionals are not only contributing to global markets—they are actively shaping them.

Taken together, these milestones illustrate a broader truth: the Vietnamese community has entered an era of global integration with distinction. Across film, media, entrepreneurship, and corporate leadership, Vietnamese voices are increasingly present where decisions are made, narratives are shaped, and futures are defined. Los Angeles Tribune International Film Festival August 13–15, 2025 | Los Angeles, California The Los Angeles Tribune International Film Festival (LATIFF) made a powerful and culturally significant debut August 13–15, 2025, establishing itself as a new international destination for independent cinema, cross-cultural storytelling, and visionary leadership in the arts. Conceived as a filmmaker-first platform, the festival was led by Founder Moe Rock and Co-Founder & President Dr. Emily Letran, whose combined influence in media, entrepreneurship, and global storytelling shaped a bold and inclusive inaugural event. From its inception, LATIFF was designed to amplify authentic voices— particularly those historically underrepresented in mainstream cinema—while honoring excellence, legacy, and innovation across borders.

Overview

We are currently producing a powerful and timely feature documentary titled Nailing the , led by Academy Award-winning producer Steve Longi (Hacksaw Ridge) and acclaimed entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. Emily Letran. This film is an exploration of the American Dream as seen through the eyes of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian immigrants who built lives from nothing, transforming the nail salon industry into a multibillion-dollar cultural phenomenon. This is more than a documentary; it’s a heartfelt, visually rich journey that we hope will resonate with audiences across the world and garner critical acclaim as a prestigious, awardwinning release.

At the center of the film are two families: one just beginning their American journey, newly arrived with hope but facing an uncertain road; and another who has lived in the U.S. for fifty years, having arrived after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Their stories span generations but are bound by the same theme: sacrifice, perseverance, and belief in a better future. We are also honored to include the extraordinary life story of Jenny Bui—known globally as Cardi B’s nail artist and “The Queen of Bling”—whose escape from the horrors of the Khmer Rouge and rise to success embodies the unbreakable spirit of the immigrant experience

Nailing the will blend emotional interviews, cinematic reenactments, and never-before-seen archival footage to chronicle how an entire generation of refugees found identity and success through an unexpected craft—nail artistry. From the moment Hollywood star Tippi Hedren introduced Vietnamese women in refugee camps to nail painting, a revolution quietly began. Today, Vietnamese Americans represent over 50% of the U.S. nail salon industry—an empire built brushstroke by brushstroke, against all odds.

We are inviting a select group of individuals to be part of this extraordinary project, whether through strategic partnership, creative collaboration, or support. This is a story that needs to be told, and we believe it can be one of the defining cultural documentaries of our time.

Meeting Pope Francis, Pope Leo and the Dalai Lama for the blessings of our book and movie

The film BOOK OF DEATH has achieved an extraordinary spiritual distinction rarely seen in cinema history: it was blessed by Pope Francis and Pope Leo, and it received two blessings from the Dalai Lama.

The blessings bestowed by the Popes and the Dalai Lama mean more to us than winning an Oscar. They affirm the film’s deeper purpose: to help hundreds of thousands of restless spirits find peace and cross over.

Most filmmakers aspire to bring their work to major theaters, prestigious film festivals, and the Academy Awards. We understand that dream. However, as the screenwriter, director, and producer of BOOK OF DEATH, I have chosen a different path.

I prefer bringing our film to poor and underserved communities— even when that means screening it for free, sometimes under difficult conditions. At times, the projection is dim, the sound is weak, and the audience can barely see or hear. None of that matters to me.

The Episode 1: REQUIEM FOR LOST SOULS - delves into my spiritual awakening, including my encounters with God and Buddha, as well as my dreams of un-dying spirits of Vietnamese refugees. These visions led me and friends to visit refugee camps in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia….The harrowing stories of Vietnamese refugees and their lost souls compelled us to seek blessings from Pope Francis, Pope Leo, and Dalai Lama by producing the book and film “BOOK OF DEATH”.

Episode 2: DEFYING HEROES - explores the tragedies that unfolded during the fall of Saigon in 1975. It sheds light on the suicides of prominent generals, including Nguyen Khoa Nam, Le Van Hung, Le Nguyen Vy, Tran Van Hai, and Pham Van Phu. The film also mentions the deaths of Colonel Nguyen Van Long and the execution of Colonel Ho Ngoc Can.

Episode 3: EXILE - focuses on the fates of prisoners in harsh re-education camps, such as General Le Minh Dao in Nam Ha prison, Priest Nguyen Huu Le in Thanh Cam prison, and many others who suffered in Cong Troi and Thanh Phong prisons. Their families faced harsh reprisals under communist rule, including the dossiers discrimination, the New Economic Zone, bourgeois confiscation, starvation, hard labor…..

Episode 4: FREEDOM DREAMS - celebrates the resilience and success of Vietnamese refugees worldwide.

In the future, this film will be distributed to schools and colleges worldwide for educational purposes.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ri A Glorious Vietnamese Refugee from Communism in the Federal Republic of Germany

Mr. Nguyen Van Ri has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Federation of Vietnamese Refugees in the Federal Republic of Germany since 2012. His dynamic and enthusiastic spirit, especially in the field of religious, social, and charitable work for the German-Vietnamese community, is a shining example for all immigrants in Germany.

Born into a Catholic family, he was instilled with love for God and a virtuous spirit from a young age. At the age of five, he and his family migrated to South Vietnam to escape the communist regime of North Vietnam.

Twenty-one years later, the South fell completely to the communists, forcing him, his wife, and their four young children, the youngest only 10 days old, to leave their homeland once again in 1981 on a fragile boat carrying 101 people. After six days adrift at sea, they ran out of food and water. Fortunately, the boat was rescued at the last minute by Cap Anamur and brought to the Philippines. Germany welcomed him and his entire family. From then on, he considered Mönchengladbach his homeland to cherish and nurture. There, he and his wife had four more children. All eight children are now university graduates and working in various professions in Germany.

Immediately upon arriving in Germany, Mr. Nguyen Van Ri began building a new life by improving his German language skills and learning the trade of a mechanic. After graduating, he served at Voith Paper for 34 years until his official retirement in 2019.

Besides working to support himself and his large family of eight children, he actively participates in volunteer activities in the community, cultural, social, and religious fields in his hometown as a member of the St. Heilig Geist Catholic parish in Mönchengladbach-Geistenbeck and a member of the City Council for Migrant Integration. Within the Federation, as Vice President for Internal Affairs, he consistently supports anti-communist activities and the struggle for human rights in Vietnam.

He has served as President of the Vietnamese Catholic Community in Mönchengladbach, Vice President of the Vietnamese Catholic Federation in Germany, President of the Vietnamese Refugee Association in Mönchengladbach, President of the Vincent de Paul Charitable Society of the Diocese of Cologne & Aachen…

His notable activities include organizing Vietnamese language classes, organizing traditional community cultural activities in Mönchengladbach, collaborating with the Misereor charity and supporting Dr. Rupert Neudeck in the Cap Anamur/Grünhelm Committee to raise funds for war victims in Kosovo, Iraq, Syria, and Africa; donating to Caritas to help Bethlehem Children’s Hospital, helping victims of African Abolism, helping earthquake victims in Haiti, helping the Redemptorist Congregation in Vietnam support disabled veterans of the Republic of Vietnam, helping the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Vietnam provide relief to leprosy camps and orphanages, protecting the lives of unborn children…; and especially raising money to help build monuments commemorating Vietnamese boat refugees in Troisdorf (2007) and Hamburg (2009).

Most recently, he organized a fundraising campaign for Caritas to help Covid-19 victims in India in early July 2021, a fundraising campaign for Aktion Deutschland Hilfe to help flood victims in the Nordrhein-Westfalen and Rheinland-Pfalz regions in August 2021, and a fundraising campaign to help the Sisters of the Holy Cross of Vietnam assist Covid-19 victims in Vietnam at the end of August 2021.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ri’s compassionate heart and enthusiastic contributions to German society through social, cultural, and charitable work were quickly recognized by Germany when President Horst Köhler awarded him the Verdienstmedaille des Verdienstordens of the Federal Republic of Germany on September 27, 2005.

On May 12, 2002, Mr. Nguyen Van Ri also received the prestigious Knight’s Order of the Universal Catholic Church, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, awarded by Pope John Paul II after 34 years of zealous service to the Church in the apostolic mission of the laity in Vietnam and abroad from 1968 to 2002.

In 2013, he received the Verdienstorden Medal from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and in 2016 he was honored with the Ehrennadel “Gold” Honorary Badge from the city of Mönchengladbach for his long-standing dedication to charitable work for Vietnamese refugees.

In addition, he received the City Integration Prize (Integrationspreise der Stadt Mönchengladbach) four times in 2000, 2014, 2015, and 2017.

Chrysalis is produced by WS Productions, founded by Winn along with his husband and longtime business partner, Randall J. Slavin, in collaboration with a Vietnam-based production company managing operational efforts abroad. The project stands as a meeting point between cultures, generations, and artistic disciplines.

While Winn is widely recognized for his visual art, cinema has offered him a new way to explore ideas that have long shaped his work. The Journey of A Documentary

About two years ago, I joined a Vietnamese film project titled A Fragile Flower. I was cast in a small role and also appeared as an extra in several scenes. During one of the filming days, while sitting in a restaurant lobby, I was introduced to a woman named Jenny.

Our conversation about film quickly deepened when she shared that she had visited the Dalai Lama in India and had produced several documentaries on refugee camps, including Pulau Bidong in Malaysia. Intrigued, I told her I would love to hear more about her journeys if she ever returned to India. That evening, I went home and watched her 90-minute documentary on Pulau Bidong—a once-deserted island that became a refuge for thousands of Vietnamese people.

As the film unfolded, I was overwhelmed. I recognized the jetty, the sick bay where my aunt once worked, the Religious Hill, and many places I wandered as a thirteen-year-old child. My own memories were deeply tied to those images—my life woven into the fate of a nation.

Several months later, Jenny invited me to join her as a producer on a documentary about Vietnamese refugees. I felt honored to take part in a project of such cultural and human value.

At the same time, my heart felt heavy, knowing the world would once again witness the painful realities faced by millions of Vietnamese “boat people”—pirate attacks, hunger, violent storms, and overcrowded camps. These were not distant stories, but lived experiences for many who risked everything for freedom.

I attended multiple filming and rehearsal sessions and watched the crew work with quiet dedication to honor refugee lives. There were long nights filming in a green-screen garage, hurried meals, and home-cooked food shared with care. Much of the funding came from refugees themselves. Most of the actors were friends and family members who volunteered simply because they believed the story needed to be told. Even then, many felt their own experiences were “not painful enough” to be included, as Jenny chose only the most heartbreaking stories—stories of unimaginable loss, re-education camps, perilous sea journeys, and the dignity of those who endured them.

What began as a 45-minute documentary that received a Humanitarian Award at the French Riviera Film Festival in Cannes later became a full-length, 120-minute film. It powerfully captured suffering, love, faith, and resilience. The film has since received two additional awards at the Vesuvius Film Festival in Pompeii, Italy, further affirming its global relevance and impact. I came to understand that this was not a Vietnamese film alone—it was a global story. Each of us, in some way, carries or knows someone who carries a piece of this history. I chose to dedicate my time to helping Jenny share its message: No More War.

On the USS Midway: commemorating 50 years the End of the Viet Nam War and getting footage for the documentary - Dr. Emily Letran, Producer Tana Thai Ha, Director Jenny Thai

This journey has been far from glamorous.

Unlike the red-carpet premieres often seen in Hollywood, our screenings took place in homes, community halls, and private venues across many countries. We traveled city to city, sharing meals with the families who welcomed us. Sometimes the audience was fifty people, sometimes hundreds. Some drove hundreds of kilometers; others flew from neighboring countries. Many came out of curiosity. All left deeply moved, carrying both sorrow and hope for the future.

One of the main goals of this film is to bring it into schools and colleges, so younger generations can understand the true cost of war—the atrocities, the lasting suffering that follows, and the strength of the human spirit that must rise above it all. In a modern world where violence and hate crimes can occur at any time, on any day, education and remembrance are essential. Only by understanding the past can we choose a more compassionate future rooted in peace and freedom.

During one visit, we witnessed the Udumbara flower—a sacred symbol in Buddhist tradition said to bloom only once every 3,000 years. Its appearance is believed to signal compassion and renewal in the human world.

In Germany, Jenny met and interviewed Christel, the wife of Captain Rupert Neudeck of the Cap Anamur. Together, they led a civilian rescue effort that saved more than 10,000 Vietnamese boat people beginning in the late 1970s.

As we continue traveling, we are reminded that the spirit of humanity endures. People still care for one another. Thought leaders, including Pope Leo, welcomed us at the Vatican and offered their blessing for the documentary. Invitations from more than fifteen countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia for 2026 affirm our shared mission—to remember, to raise awareness, and to make a difference.

The First Time Director Award and Social Impact Film Award at the Los Angeles Tribune International Film Festival marked only the beginning. As a global collective, we must hold hands and protect one another—preserving freedom, peace, and love—so this story, and its message of No More War, can continue to guide future generations.

Bà Collen Shine phát biểu qua tin nhắn ngay sau khi tham dự chương trình 50 Năm Viễn Xứ & Tri Ân – VIETNAMERICA THE MUSICAL. Bà được mời đến để tham dự và nhận lời tri ân vì cha bà – một sĩ quan Không Quân – bị bắn rơi và mất tích năm 1974.

Một quan khách khác là ông Rolando Montana, có cha là sĩ quan Lục Quân, ông Rosendo Montana, tử trận năm 1970. Ông Rolando hiện sinh hoạt trong tổ chức The Gold Star Children of the Vietnam War, quy tụ những người con của các quân nhân Mỹ mất tích trong chiến tranh Việt Nam (MIA – Missing in Action) để nâng đỡ và hỗ trợ tinh thần lẫn nhau.

“Làm rất tốt! Tôi rất thích sự kiện tuyệt vời này, nhưng phải về sớm sau giờ giải lao. Chỉ là buổi diễn hơi dài quá đối với tôi. Tuy nhiên, việc bỏ lỡ phần cuối cũng làm tôi tiếc lắm. Mọi khán giả dường như đều rất tập trung theo dõi toàn bộ chương trình. Hiện Max là sinh viên năm thứ hai đại học, sinh ra và lớn lên tại Hoa Kỳ trong một gia đình truyền thống Việt Nam. Em luôn phải đối diện với sự va chạm giữa cái mới và cái cũ, giữa văn hóa Đông và Tây. Em đã chia sẻ qua một email gửi đến nhiều người sau buổi trình diễn.

Và còn rất nhiều những nhận xét, cảm xúc khác của khán giả được phát biểu và chia sẻ trên các trang mạng xã hội trong những ngày qua – và vẫn còn đang tiếp diễn.

Sự thành công của buổi tưởng niệm là nhờ nội dung phong phú, nhiều ý nghĩa, được 8 hội đoàn gồm: Vietnamese American Heritage Foundation, Nhà Việt Nam, Hội Quân Nhân Mỹ Gốc Việt, US–Vietnam Research Center, Hội Văn Hóa Khoa Học Việt Nam, Ủy Ban Tưởng Niệm 50 năm Xa Xứ Người Việt Louisiana, Cộng Đồng Người Việt Quốc gia New York và Ban Diễn Hành Văn Hóa Quốc Tế New York, cùng nhiệt tâm, dốc sức để hoàn thành.

Phần nghi lễ do đoàn trống Dân Tộc Lasan phụ trách, với nghi thức chào cờ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa và Hoa Kỳ cùng phút mặc niệm trang trọng. Tri ân 7 hội đoàn tranh đấu và giúp đỡ người tị nạn an cư, phát triển

Khoa học gia Dương Nguyệt Ánh, diễn giả danh dự, đã nói về những sai lạc của truyền thông Hoa Kỳ trong việc trình bày mục đích của cuộc chiến tranh tự vệ của miền Nam Việt Nam, về Quân lực Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, và ngay cả trong học đường, con em của chúng ta cũng phải học những điều dối trá và sai lạc này. Bà mong mỏi giới trẻ phải học hỏi thêm để không bị tuyên truyền làm hiểu sai về sự kiên cường và những hy sinh cao cả của cha ông mình. Bà cũng kêu gọi các bậc phụ huynh nên hướng dẫn con cái để các em biết đâu là sự thật. Những nỗ lực như buổi tưởng niệm hôm nay mang tính cách giáo dục cho giới trẻ. Bà cám ơn Ban Tổ chức và bày tỏ niềm vui, vinh dự khi được tham dự và đóng góp một phần vào công việc chung.

• Hội Gia Đình Tù Nhân Chính Trị Việt Nam do bà Khúc Minh Thơ điều hành, đã giúp trên 300,000 tù nhân chính trị và gia đình sau những năm tháng tù đày được định cư tại Hoa Kỳ.

• Hội Tiền BPSOS, do ông bà Dương Phục và Thanh Thủy đảm trách, đã cứu vớt hơn 3,000 thuyền nhân lênh đênh trên biển Đông.

• Hội SEARAC, do Giáo sư Lê Xuân Khoa sáng lập, đã góp phần tranh đấu tại nghị trường để có những đạo luật giúp đỡ người tị nạn, từ chương trình Ra đi có trật tự (ODP), Coming Home cho anh chị em có cha là người Mỹ, đến Roll Over cho phép những người bị trả về Việt Nam vì không qua được các cuộc thanh lọc tại trại tị nạn.

• Hội USCC, với đại diện là nhạc sĩ Nam Lộc, đã giúp hàng trăm ngàn người tị nạn Việt Nam ổn định cuộc sống trong suốt 50 năm qua.

• Hội VOICE Canada, do ông Kỳ Anh điều hành, đã giúp hàng trăm người tị nạn Việt Nam từ Thái Lan được an cư lạc nghiệp tại Canada qua chương trình bảo lãnh tư nhân của chính phủ Canada.

• Hội Quân Nhân Mỹ Gốc Việt, do Đại tá Phương Nguyễn hiện là chủ tịch, quy tụ và nâng đỡ các quân nhân gốc Việt đang phục vụ trong quân đội Hoa Kỳ.

• Trung tâm Nghiên cứu Việt Mỹ, do Giáo sư Tường Nguyễn sáng lập và điều hành, chuyên nghiên cứu, phát hành sách, tổ chức và tham gia các hội luận quốc gia và quốc tế trong lãnh vực giáo dục để làm sáng tỏ và công bằng cho chính nghĩa của Việt Nam Cộng Hòa trong cuộc chiến tự vệ trước sự xâm lăng của Cộng sản Việt Nam.

Dân biểu Derek Trần của California, thay mặt Ban Tổ chức, đã trao plaque vinh danh bà là cá nhân xuất sắc trong lĩnh vực khoa học và có nhiều đóng góp vào việc bảo vệ an ninh cho quê hương Hoa Kỳ.

Kiến trúc sư Minh Trần và nhà thiết kế Loan Nguyễn lo việc trang trí sân khấu, và không thể quên Mục sư Phan Đức Hiếu, người đã cho đoàn kịch và đoàn vũ sử dụng hội trường của nhà thờ Hội Thánh Tin Lành Giám Lý Việt Mỹ trong nhiều tháng để tâp dợt, và tất cả các thiện nguyện viên đã đóng góp vào buổi tưởng niệm và nhạc kịch bằng cách này hay cách khác.

Cô Rebecca Phan thuộc nhóm Diễn hành Văn hóa Quốc tế New York đã đón nhận gần một chục diễn viên, đạo diễn, nhà sản xuất, người lo trang phục cho vũ công và hoa hậu Cathleen dùng 2 căn nhà để đón tiếp 10 ngày trong tháng 8 để tập dợt, và trên 10 ngày trong tháng 9 để chuẩn bị cho ngày khai mạc. Rebecca đã tự nguyện nấu ăn, chuyên chở đi về cho khách và còn in những tài liệu cần thiết. Còn nhiều cá nhân khác đã giúp sức, đóng góp tài chính hoặc hỗ trợ bằng cách này hay cách khác.

Một điều an ủi khác cho Ban Tổ chức là các nhà tài trợ Christine Quỳnh đến từ Houston, bác sĩ Jacqueine Thu Thảo, chị Khánh Vân từ California, anh chị Steve Phương Lê và Tiffany Thúy Hoàng, Leayna Nguyễn là nhựng người đã đóng góp $5,000 đã vận động nhanh chóng ngay trong bữa tiệc Tri Ân vào lúc 7PM cùng ngày, quyên góp được trên $50,000 USD để giúp Hội Bảo Tồn Lịch Sử trả nợ và có kinh phí làm video đưa lên mạng Internet trong năm nay để phổ biến rộng rãi trên toàn thế giới.
