新年のご挨拶 新年明けましておめでとうございます。2014 年の新年を迎え、謹んで お慶び申し上げます。この一年が皆様にとって明るく希望に満ちたものに なることを祈りつつ、年頭のご挨拶を申し上げます。 私は、11 月初めに総領事としてサンフランシスコに着任し、このたび、 初めての年末年始を米国で迎えられることを嬉しく思っております。在サン フランシスコ総領事として赴任するに際し、当館所管地域である北カリフォ ルニア地域及びネバダ州と日本との関係の更なる強化、日本人・日系人コ ミュニティーの皆様の日々の活動に対する更なる支援、当地における対日 理解の更なる深化等の目標を立てて当地へ参りました。 ネバダ州は、近年、その経済が順調に成長し、人口も継続的に増加し てきております。この点、ネバダ州は米国内でも注目すべき州の一つであ ると考えています。今日のネバダ州では、約 3000 名の日本人が生活し、 ネバダ日本商工会議所（JCCNV）の会員数も 80 を超えています。こうし た中、昨年は約 8000 名の人々が参加した「ラスベガス秋祭り」の開催等 の動きを受けて、日本関係の活動も年々活発になってきており、当館とし ても積極的にこれらの動きを支援していきたいと考えております。また，こ れらの支援にあたっては、JCCNV や日系人市民連盟（JACL）とも連携を 取って参りたいと思います。 ネバダ州の今をよく理解し、日本とネバダ州との関係を更に強化させる べく、2014 年にはできる限り多くの皆様とお会いして直接お話しを伺いた いと考えております。1 月中にもラスベガスへ参りたいと考えており、皆様 にお会いできるのを楽しみにしております。 最後に、ネバダ州にお住まいの日本人・日系人の皆様の更なる発展と ご健勝を心より祈念し、私の新年の挨拶とさせていただきます。 平成 26 年 元旦 在サンフランシスコ日本国総領事 渡邉正人

from U.S. Senator Mr. Harry Reid ハリー・リード上院議員からのメッセージ Dear Las Vegas Japan Times Readers, I want to wish everyone in Nevada a very happy and prosperous new year. The holiday season culminates with the coming of the New Year. This marks a time when many people choose to start fresh with new year resolutions, goals, and more. As we enter the New Year, I remain committed to doing everything I can to create jobs and renew our investments in areas such as education, infrastructure, and clean energy development. I hope my colleagues in the House can put petty political bickering aside

so we can address the most important issues facing the American people today. We must not waver from monumental tasks ahead of us: 50 million people in the US are living in poverty, and nearly 11 million people in the United States are forced to live in the shadows and fear deportation. I sincerely hope that both Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate alike will use this time to reflect on how we may be knit together, to work for the people of this great nation toward a common goal, and to supply the necessities of others. This new year, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate from both sides of the aisle. Working together, we will continue down the path of success, and economic recovery.
