MT. TABOR’S CHILDREN, YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT MINISTRIES’ NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY, 2014

VOL .9, NO . 2

G REETINGS TO THE M T. T ABOR “V ILLAGE” ... EDITOR’S NOTE: The Children, Youth & Young Adults started January off in spectacular fashion and closed the month out with the fabulous 1st Annual Children & Youth Musical. I can’t wait for next year! During Black History Month we always look back on our heritage with pride on all that has been accomplished. As you read this month's newsletter, we note the history being made today by many of Mt. Tabor's children, youth and young adults. We are definitely proud of them all. Thanks to all those who made contributions to the Newsletter, they were greatly appreciated.

Were you there? I hope you didn’t miss the start of something very special at Mt. Tabor. What do you ask? Our 1st Annual Children & Youth Choir Musical. To say it was outstanding is an understatement. Thank you to the Children & Youth Choir; their director – Sis. Marquita Henderson-Jenkins; musicians; parents; and last but certainly not least, the Mt. Tabor Church Family for your support, presence and encouragement. Traditionally in addition to Black History, February is a time when you see a lot of hearts and flowers in the celebration of love and Valentine’s Day. I would like to take a moment to remind you of the most important and unselfish valentine ever given. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 – KJV) Let this be a reminder that whatever we do in life we must always keep God first. To our visitors and new members:

Anita Cole, Editor

Rev. Keith E. Brown, Sr., Children & Youth Director P.S. W e look forward t o seeing each one of you t his week in Bible St udy. Rem em ber, “ St udy t o shew t hyself approved unt o G od, a workm an t hat needet h not t o be asham ed, right ly dividing t he word of t rut h.” (2 T im ot hy 2:15)

T O G O D BE T H E G LO RY “It’s The Little Things” “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1 (NIV & KJV) Lay aside, to cast away from ourselves even the little things. Sometimes it isn't the big stuff that trips us up, it's the small things. The very thing we keep overlooking, and saying, oh I can get rid of that in a heart-beat, is what is trying to detour our destiny! A weight is a weight no matter how small it maybe. If a person lifts a 200 lb weight they know it's heavy and may take real effort to lift. But if you give them a 30 lb weight, it'll seem to be much easier, but if they keep lifting it up over and over again it will also wear you down. Sometimes we get so used to carrying around the smaller weights they no longer stand out to us as something negative. A prideful person may respond with, "I can handle that," unaware that the weight they are carrying will eventually lead to their downfall! Proverbs 21:2 (NIV): “A person may think their own ways are right, but the LORD weighs the heart.” A person with a bad attitude may use the excuse that "I'm just real with people". They tell "little lies" on the job, even certain relationships may become weights. The Word of God will help us shed that unnecessary weight. When we really ask the Lord to show us ourselves, it will reveal those 'little things' that have become a part of our everyday routine. Even if it seems like nothing big, if we struggle with it, if it hinders us from doing God's will, it's a stronghold that we need to lay aside. To all the young people who are participating in the Black History month celebration, hats off to you for a great job. If you see a Child or Youth, give them a BIG hug and let them know that you love them. Let's continue to love our village!

HE GAVE ME LOVE . . . by tilesha

I have never felt ashamed of admitting that I have struggled with self image issues all of my life. One never can tell ... I may have been given this fight purposely so that my journey may inspire someone. So I share in the hopes that someone will find clarity amidst the hurt and pain that this affliction can cause. I know, first hand that it is easy to become frustrated with old idioms and various platitudes that suggest that it should be easy to simply believe that "beauty is only skin deep". People try to console you by saying that what you feel when you look into the mirror doesn't matter because "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". It has taken me 25 years, a lifetime of painful contemplation, to realize that God has equipped me with more than words to cope with the unsettling feeling that I should be and look like anything other than myself. It took me years to figure out that God has given me something that He knew I would never be able to manufacture on my own. He gave me LOVE ... love that translates to unconditional affection and attraction which evokes faith in Him and all that is good in this world. It is this unyielding faith that instills in me the values of His word. And that word states that my God made everything by his own divine design. He created the heavens and the earth – endowing the world with unabashing beauty. And so as I'm thinking about the changes that I want to make in my life, I realize that I should stop separating myself from that equation. I have to remind myself that God created me too. I am a work of art belonging to his vast collection of masterpieces. As such, it is a form of hypocrisy to claim that my God makes no mistakes and that we are all made in His own perfect image and then turn around and not love myself completely. When looking at things with that perspective, I understand that I must appreciate myself and take special care to project His purpose. And how can I do that when my confidence, my light, is dimmed? How can I do that with a bowed head and a shrinking spirit? It's impossible. I must change. I now realize that everything that I aspire to achieve and accomplish starts with me reminding myself of this truth. My work starts within myself. My work starts now. When I look in the mirror, I must work to see the God inside of me, and thank Him continuously for His clarity. If this is an issue that you grapple with, I hope that you will do the same. Be blessed. A column by Tilesha Brown

B LACK H ISTORY: P AST, P RESENT & F UTURE Mt. Tabor’s own David Price with Rep. John Lewis (D-GA). Often called "one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced," John Lewis has dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties, and building what he calls "The Beloved Community” in America. His dedication to the highest ethical standards and moral principles has won him the admiration of many of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the United States Congress. This picture was taken was Monday February 3, 2014, during "A Conversation with Congressman John Lewis and Andrew Aydin" at Georgetown University.

Something to Think About: “I am the most emulated man on this planet Black men you are the most emulated man on this planet So act like it. Be the stereotype's stereotype. I am black men who have never been to criminal court. I am black men who's children's mothers have never received a single check because we handle our business as men Therefore, there's no need to cringe when we hear the word child support. I am black man, master of multi-tasking. Using my left hand to play karate with a three year old boy While simultaneously using my right to make a eight ounce bottle of Similac With an ergo baby carrier strapped to my chest. With a freshly pressed dress shirt on dancing to Barney's children's songs Managing not to get a single crease in my slacks Oh yes, we have mastered the art of fresh.” “My name is Prentice Powell from Oakland, California and I Aspire to achieve greatness with integrity.” From Aspire Network
