It;s official! We are in Winter, we will miss those Summer nights of Alfresco dining but instead we will be cosying up with a cup of Cocoa, by the log fire and the new copy of Lash Inc UK Magazine!

How quickly did 2018 go?

If you’re anything like me, you would have seen 2018 flash by!! But, there’s nothing like starting a cosy Christmas in with a good read (Lash Inc) and get ready for an even better 2019.

Script

by Angelina Salacinski Lash Inc UK. Senior Journalist Lash Factor A lot of my time is spent helping lash techs behind the scenes. I get asked questions on a daily basis. Some of these questions are asking why a certain procedure went wrong and the tech wants to know how to avoid it happening in the future.

I ask them to go through everything step by step to see if I can identify the problem. Nearly every time it is because the tech has not followed the correct procedure or they deviated from it.

Other times it’s because they haven’t adapted to their environment.

For instance let’s say they were using our Fusion adhesive. Fusion is a very quick adhesive and has great retention but it also has an ideal working temperature and humidity.

If the temperature or humidity goes outside of this range then you have to adapt how you are working to ensure that your adhesive still performs well.

So it may be that you have to pick up a little more adhesive to allow that extra second to place the lash before the adhesive begins to cure. Or you may even need to change to a slower adhesive like Magnet to be able to work more easily in those conditions.

Sometimes you have to assess the situation and make changes but still work within the parameters of your product.

It’s a bit like a film script.

5 - Lashes

So, let’s pick a popular product we sell - Elleebana. This is a product that Otto Mitter developed. He has written the script and ensured that the whole process runs smoothly and that we have a great ending.

Otto, his wife Zoe and their Elleebana team are the directors. They will liaise with the artists and make sure they are following the script.

A film has a beginning, a plot, scenes and an ending.

So we are the actors/actresses and we prepare for the treatment (or “film”) by having everything laid out ready in the beginning to ensure we are able to follow the plot and work our way through the scenes.

We follow each scene carefully and ensure we get all the words right and even if we sometimes forget some of our lines then we can still refer back to the script.

We know that the result is only as good as the process followed. We need to make sure our mixtures are correct, our timings are correct and the correct products are used. On occasions things are out of our control, as mentioned above with the adhesive, and so sometimes we may need to ad-lib.

This means that sometimes we may need to make a judgment call and make a little alteration. For example, if the rods aren’t sticking well to the eyelid then we may need to cut them to size. If the lashes aren’t sticking well to the rod then we may need to hold them down a little longer.

These are not major alterations, they are just little adjustments that are made to make the script continue to flow easily.

Once we have completed all the scenes then we get to the ending. We make sure everything looks good, that we have followed the plot and then tidied everything away back in its place ready for the next film. If everything has been followed correctly then we get the perfect ending!

However, problems arise when you deviate from the script and don’t take the director’s instructions.

You can’t mix brands when the brand has been designed for all the elements to work together. The different chemicals were not designed to be mixed together and by doing so you will get a completely different ending than had you followed the script.

Your brand might have a completely different script to another brand. So even if you trained in another brand then you must still follow the new script and not think that it’s okay to follow the old one just because that’s what you know. The old one may be completely different!

It’s important to familiarise yourself with your new script and to remember your lines. Always read through your script first, familiarise yourself with it, understand it and follow it.

As previously said, we can adapt to our surroundings and make little adjustments to make it a little easier but we still must follow the script.

When you start deviating from the script or making your own script up, that’s when you truly lose the plot!

Those that know me, know that I am a big advocate for Lash safety. I have been spending the last few years researching better ways for us as Lash Artists to ensure we are lashing at the best interests of our client’s and their natural lashes.

What lengths are safe?

This year I thought to my self, we can still do something. I am still seeing these lash sets of damaging the lashes and I wanted to try my hardest to educate the industry why this is not good.

We can extend the natural lashes by a maximum of 3mm in the centre of the lash line. This does not mean to extend all lashes by 3mm, this is a guide that you can never go longer than 3mm.

We can extend the inner corners by 1mm from the natural lashes only!

Any natural lashes that measure 4mm or under cannot be lashes as they are still at the early stage of growth and are more delicate to lash.

Now you can understand why its important to measure clients natural lashes with a Lash Ruler, without one is just guess work!

Tips for Surviving the

Festive Season

HR Business Partner One year I spent Christmas Day at a hospital, on the maternity ward as my sister gave birth to my nephew. Despite being at work on Christmas Day, all the hospital staff were full of festive cheer; there were decorations, treats and Christmas songs being played. It was a great environment and George (I suggested Christmassy names which were largely ignored) was born in time for Christmas lunch.

As wonderful as the hospital was and clearly the staff were enjoying themselves whilst working, some work environments struggle with the festive period - which makes January not just depressing, but extremely difficult in managing the aftermath.

Resilience December is an extremely busy month; you are working longer days, with back-to-back appointments, and barely time to breathe, let alone enjoy the Christmas cheer. You dream about Christmas Day & putting your feet up, but then remember you still have presents to purchase, food to buy and family arrangements to make. Whilst ‘it’s the most wonderful time of the year’ it can lead to stress and burnout due to the pace and intensity of the season.

With that in mind, insist that you and your staff take breaks. No matter how busy you are, detachment from activity can preserve your energy and prevent burnout, so is worth it in the long run! Think about introducing mindfulness into your workplace; it’s increasingly popular with good reason, as studies have shown it facilitates job performance and decreases stress, whilst improving resilience.

Christmas cheer I appreciate this will make me sound like a grinch, but work-related Christmas parties sometimes end in tears. You may feel like it’s a night out with your best buddies and the most important consideration is whether to make Christmas jumpers mandatory, but in a legal sense it’s an activity within the course of your employment - meaning work rules apply. Drink fuelled behaviour is the cause of a number of employment tribunal claims; my favourite case being Westlake v ZSL London Zoo, involving a meerkat handler, fighting with a monkey specialist at a Christmas party, over their love for the llama keeper. True story.

Have a policy on work-related events setting out expectations and potential outcomes in case there are issues with unacceptable behaviour.

Dignity at work is a right all year round, including the Christmas party! No-one wants to be a party pooper but the consumption of alcohol can have consequences long after the hangover is gone. My advice is to have fun but drink responsibly.”

Try to choose a party that is inclusive for all your employees; be sensitive to your staff that may not drink alcohol or eat certain foods.

Planned leave Figure out when you can allow staff to take time off over the festive period, and ask them in advance to submit their requests so you can plan accordingly.

Build some extra capacity into your plan, as it’s cold and flu season, and people are more susceptible to illness during busy periods so you could have some absence issues. If you have an existing annual leave policy in place, you may want to include a specific section on the festive period and avoid Christmas and New Year being the end of your leave year - if it is, consider letting staff carry leave over, otherwise you may have an influx of requests.

Have fun Most importantly, do have fun. Be thankful for your bustling trade and grateful to your amazing team.

Senior Journalist Golden Experts I know that feeling when you receive a text message which is 2 pages long explaining how unhappy a client is and you feel your heart dropping to your stomach. It’s not nice and it feels very personal. We put so much passion into each set we create, love, care and we truly want the client to be happy and just enjoy the lashes. But sometimes it doesn’t happen.

But complaints are not bad. I always say to my girls, if it’s something about lashes- we can do better and there’s nothing to feel bad about but just the opposite, it’s good. However if the complaint is about customer service or a person, it is something to take personally because then we are doing something very wrong.

already. It means that new clients are already struggling to book in because you don’t have much availability. But if your numbers tell you that less than half of your clients are coming back to you after first visit, there is something wrong. Either the lashes are not lasting, they don’t like the outcome or it’s too expensive for them to maintain.

If you never receive any complaints, you are in a bigger trouble than you realise.

According to statistics 96% clients don’t complain and just never come back. If you think even of yourself, do you call and complain if you are not happy about a haircut or a facial? I know I don’t because I never want to hurt anyones feelings. So I just never go back. But for us it’s much worse because there is no possibility for us to make them come back again. There’s also a chance that you are doing something which might be a very little thing to fix but you are not aware of it at all. For example, your customers feel cold and you never offered them a blanket because you thought they will ask it themselves. You should never think that people would say something if they didn’t like it.

To calculate your revisit rate, count all customers that you’ve had in a month and divide by the amount of reservations and multiply by 100. For example: you had 70 clients visit you last month and 120 reservations: 70/120= 0.58333 and now 0.58333 x 100= 58.33% That’s your customer retention rate.

And if you don’t know at all where you are standing then turn to numbers.

They will tell you everything about your business. You should always keep track of your customer revisit statistics. The industry norm is 50-60%. That means that more than half of your clients are regulars who come back to you at least once but hopefully every month for years. If your statistics show that its 80% and more, you are fully booked

You can also see if people are happy with you if you receive a lot of new clients by recommendations from regular clients. That’s a clear sign that people are so happy about you that they want to get their friends and family all come to your business.

What you should do if your customer retention is bad? First off, talk to your clients. Call to each new client a week or so later and ask how they are doing.

People tend to be honest if you are not hostile and are really interested in how they are doing. And if there is a complaint -don’t get offended. This is an opportunity for you to be a better professional, learn and offer a better service. Instead always thank them and say that you understand and would like to offer them a complimentary fix.

Secondly in my salon whenever we have a new client, before we tell goodbye we say “ If you have any questions or problems, don’t be scared to contact us either by phone or email.”. This little sentence makes them comfortable enough that they will contact us should they have an issue and it ensures us that we will have an opportunity to get them back.

And finally- really think through your whole service and customer experience, step by step and see how you can improve. What would you expect for that price and how would you like to feel when your laying down and getting your lashes done. If you need more ideas, go to another salon and get your lashes done. Measure and think about every move that you do there and the lash artist is doing and think how it makes you feel as a customer. And if you really want to master your customer experience, you will go to a very bad and cheap place and also to a top salon in your city. From both salons you will learn what not to do and how not to act and also how to make your clients feel really special and appreciated.

We always grow because of our worse experiences. And from my experience, the clients who have not been happy, will become our biggest supporters because they saw how we dealt with it.

So start talking to your clients, measure your statistics and don’t be scared to get complaints. Instead encourage them and look at them as an opportunity.

Hanna’s

Story

Hanna Putjato grew up in Minsk, Belarus. The beauty entrepreneur started her journey rather boringly whilst studying Banking at the College of Finance and Economics in her home country.

Like many Europeans, Hanna decided to come to the UK for more opportunity.

With no English skills whatsoever, Hanna started working as a packer for minimum wage at a bandage factory in a small town in the North West of England called Bolton.

After a lonely start to life in England, Hanna made the decision to learn the language as quickly as possible.

Starting a new job in a nearby restaurant and also enrolling on a beauty therapy course at Bolton College, Hanna grasped the opportunity to develop her language skills.

During the beauty therapy course, Hanna participated in the ‘eyelash extensions application’ module, for

which she discovered she had a passion.

Embracing this new love for eyelash extensions, Hanna decided to apply for her first job in the beauty industry, working as an eyelash technician.

Struggling to apply 10 lashes an hour never mind a full set in two hours, Hanna received many complaints.

But within just two months of working in the salon, Hanna had her first returning customer, then another and soon became the most booked up beautician in the salon! This led to Hanna making the decision that she wanted to work for herself. Renting a room in a local beauty salon in Bolton, she started to actively promote her own eyelash extensions business.

In just a few short months Hanna was completely booked up and had established a comfortable regular income.

Hanna had already tasted success and was hungry to achieve more, so the next step of her journey would see her travel to England’s bustling capital, London.

The first step was renting a room in a budget hairdresser’s salon in the East of London. The first few months she worked almost for free in order to get customers through the door, offering ridiculously low priced special offers and selling her treatments through deal websites like Groupon. It was barely

enough to cover the bills, but Hanna knew that this would only be temporary.

Within a few months, Hanna was ready to fulfil her dream of working in Central London, moving again to the more luxurious borough of Knightsbridge.

Hanna knew that she would lose a portion of her customer base, but confident in her ability and not afraid of starting from scratch, she soon saw an increase in a new, higher paying clientele.

Whilst working in the Knightsbridge salon, Hanna gained her qualification in ‘Russian Volume’, which was hugely popular. Hanna loved taking photos of her volume sets and began posting them on her social media platforms. In almost no time at all, other lash technicians began to approach her, asking if she would teach them ‘Russian Volume’ and so Hanna started to research on how to become a trainer. Hanna applied to the already recognised beauty training academy but was rejected by all of the training providers at the time, who told her they were not in need of any additional trainers.

Deciding that the only other choice was to create her own courses, within 3 months she had completed a teachertraining course, written her own training manuals and had her training courses accredited with the Beauty Guild.

Hanna wanted to give her students a variety of products in her training kits to make sure they had everything they would need to begin their career as an eyelash technician. Buying lots of products for a single kit from big lash brands full price was too expensive and after a lot of careful consideration, Hanna took a risk of borrowing over £8,000 to invest in sourcing eyelash products and tools. She tested the equipment and finding the quality to be to her liking, used them to build her kits. The rest, as they say, is history!

But that was just the beginning of a big journey! Hanna became busy with training courses, as well as maintaining her busy schedule as a lash technician.

During this time Hanna also started to sell them on Ebay. She was putting in a full day of lash appointments after which she would return home to pack orders received on eBay that day, then the next morning at 8am Hanna was in the Post Office queue to send the parcels out. When she had finished packing the day’s orders, she started to build the first London Lash website - then called Lady Lash.

It was a difficult and challenging time and she certainly needed some help! Wanting to step away from lash extension treatments in order to concentrate more on providing trainings and selling products, Hanna moved to a bigger salon in Victoria, Central London and hired her first member of staff. After a few months, she had four lash technicians working for her, and began to concentrate solely on training and retail.

In the following months, Hanna saw a dramatic improvement in her brand she soon branded the products with Lady Lash (which was soon rebranded to London Lash Professional) and Hanna’s growing popularity alongside that of her brand meant she was invited to judge eyelash competitions and speaks at professional lash conferences all over the world.

Visiting lash competitions all around the world as a judge inspired Hanna to organise her own eyelash extensions competition in London called ‘Lash Battle’. It was the first UK eyelash extensions competition and was a very exciting event for the British eyelash extensions community. Lash Battle proved to be a great success, with participants from all over the UK and more than 20 European countries travelling to take part in Lash Battle!

From training students in the UK and overseas, judging competitions all around the world, speaking at international lash conferences and active engagement with other lash technicians’ all this contributed to the growth and notoriety of London Lash. Over the three years since Hanna launched London Lash, stock has moved into bigger warehouses 4 times and the team has grown from one person to more than 30 members!

on a managerial role, so stepped back from providing trainings herself, judging competitions and speaking at conferences, to providing occasional VIP trainings and a small number of lash events per year.

by Sarah Humphreyson Lash Inc UK. Senior Journalist Eyelash Queen The epidemic of plastic use has received a lot of negative press in the last few years - and it is obvious that we as humans are more aware than ever before of our impact and the damaging effects on the environment.

But what about our usage in the eyelash extension industry?

Env ironmenta l awareness and recycling is something I have always been quite passionate about. From microbrushes to disposable mascara wands, the plastic on the back of our gel pads...this is not an exhaustive list but you get the gist.

The eyelash extension industry is growing year on year - and with it, tonnes of plastic waste.

Our plastic addiction and waste mismanagement is condemning countless marine birds and animals to death by entanglement or poisoning, and even leading to chemical contamination of the fish we eat.

Did you know that plastic taken to landfill can take up to 1000 years to degrade, and when it eventually does, ends life as tiny particles that can easily contaminate our soil and end up in rivers and oceans?

The vast swirls of plastic rubbish visible on the sea surface, horrifying as they are – represent just the tip of the iceberg.

What lies beneath are the masses of microbeads and broken-down particles of plastic that are easily ingested by sea creatures, and impossible to remove.

We are turning our beautiful Ocean into a plastic soup. About 8 million tonnes of plastics enter the sea every year, and at this rate we face a future with more plastic in the Ocean than fish by 2050.

The urgently needed solution calls for a combination of enhanced awareness, reduced plastic use, and massively improved waste management.

Disposable plastics are convenient and hygienic I admit - but what can we do as lash artists to lessen our contribution to a massive problem?

We can all start to be more conscientious by separating our waste into hazardous, (items with any bodily fluids) recycling

and general. Your waste disposal company should be able to assist. It is simple enough to have 2 bins next to your lash station - one for recycling and one for general, plus a hazardous waste bag. We are making a conscious effort in our lash lounge to dispose of different waste items correctly, and are looking into future alternatives.

Let’s not continue to contribute to this issue, when there are alternatives available!

by Priya Patel Lash Allure Beautiful Bollywood! With one of the fastest evolving beauty and glamour trends in the film industry, beauty has been at the forefront to demonstrate the significant increase in women’s independence through many decades.

As early as 1910s where typical beauty would represent simplicity, the 1920s would introduce the use of brighter lipsticks. The 1920s also first introduced the use Kohl, which was originally used around the eyes to ward off the “evil eye”, something which was also used on young children both boys and girls to later became part of women’s makeup routine.

By the 1940s, actresses such as Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh (one of the first actresses and highest paid performer in Indian cinema) and Madhubala (Bollywood’s very own Madonna) became the first to be recognised for their makeup styles and fashion trends. In such limited times of beauty products, Suraiya and Madhubala would be seen with eyeliner with a soft flick at the ends.

Moving into the 1960s, eye makeup was about being more dramatic and heavy. Actress Saira Bano influenced western style double winged tips cementing dramatic eyes in India.

During the disco 70s era, more western inf luences drove Bollywood beauty to shift from being dramatic to sexy where eyeliner took a step back and the popularity for false eyelashes increased..

From the 80s to the turn of the century Bollywood beauty had become more and more glamorous where the introduction of new products, increased knowledge and experimenting with different makeup techniques centred the balance between glamour and natural. How To Speed Up Your

L ash Treatment

Lash Inc. Senior Journalist CEO, London Lash Pro Speed is a vital skill for any lash treatment, especially if you want to be a successful and recognised lash artist! However, the secret to becoming speedier and more efficient doesn’t lie in how fast your lash application is, but rather in avoiding unnecessary steps throughout the application process. We have summarised below simple tips & tricks so that you can speed up your lash treatment without compromising lash perfection.

Working Station Organisation is key!

• The most important thing to consider before you begin any lash treatment is lighting! You cannot do a full set of lashes if you can’t see those pesky little baby lashes. Our recommendation would be to use a bright white light as an orange/yellow glow makes it difficult to see the tiny blonde hairs, which leads to dreaded stickies! Our favourite lights are from Glamcor. They have settings allowing you to alter the lighting for the best results! Definitely worth the investment! Alternatively, a ring light is also an option for beginners & they offer great light coverage.

• Trolley organisation is essential.

Ensure only the products you will be using on your client are on the top shelf. If your shelf is packed it’s going to make it harder to find the products you actually need. Anything you don’t need for the treatment, pop on the shelves below so they’re out the way.

• Having a clock nearby! Tracking the time it takes you throughout the lash application process gives you a good indication as to whether you need to speed up. It’s great for tracking your improvement in efficiency and speed.

Client Preparation It is essential that your client is properly prepared before their treatment. Asking your client to follow the below ensures a smooth and seamless lash appointment!

• Ask your client to come with absolutely no eye makeup on. You don’t want to waste valuable time by removing unbudgeable mascara! Also, make sure your client goes to the bathroom before starting. There is nothing worse than having to stop for bathroom breaks Ensuring your client is comfortable Your client being comfortable is so important not only for client satisfaction but also for you. The ideal client is one that sleeps all the way through! Here is a few steps you can take to ensure your client sleeps like a baby…

• Keep them away from caffeine! It can make your client’s eyes twitchy – which makes it very it difficult for you to place lashes and could lead to nasty chemical burns! At London Lash, we always offer clients caffeine free tea and coffee.

• Ensure they are lying comfortably on the bed with a pillow. Offering a blanket if they are cold! Always play nice, relaxing music that will help your clients drift off!

Eyepatches I know a lot of people think this step is not that important, but it can be a total game-changer! It will be so more beneficial for you to spend 5 minutes ensuring they are on properly, than to spend 20 minutes trying to rectify something that has gone wrong!

.• Eyepatches must never touch the waterline! This will irritate your client’s eyes and be extremely uncomfortable!

In extreme cases it can cause chemical burns or bruising on the eyes!. The patches must cover all bottom lashes, if any try to escape, use tape to keep them in place.

• We recommend using our London lash, extra thin eye patches for extreme comfort! They are perfect for clients with sensitive/twitchy eyes! It is also important to consider that they come in different shapes for a wide range of clients.

Applying The Lashes By now, most of you know how to “apply lashes” ! But some of our tips and tricks might make your life a little easier!

• Start Application with the inner & outer corners then fill in the middle. A lot of artists miss the corners of the eyes.

However, if you start with the tricky bits, you can then finish with the easy part. Resulting in a beautiful full set!

Don’t do one eye then the other. With lashing, symmetry is key, so whatever you do on one eye, go and repeat on the other. I usually do 3-4 lashes on one, then 3-4 lashes on the other .

• Don’t spend too much time looking for the “perfect lash” to apply an extension on. This is common with beginners.

Remember every lash should be covered, so it doesn’t matter which lash you choose to do first, they all need doing in the end!

• Make sure your glue isn’t slow drying.

We recommend a gradually drying glue for beginners when not confident at sticking lashes in place, but give it a go - the quicker the glue dries, the quicker the treatment.

Lastly, (this may be obvious) but put your phone away! We’re all guilty of having a sneaky look whenever it lights up. Turn it off, put it in a draw. The last thing you want is for your phone to be going off when you are lashing!

Makeup Culture Men’s makeup culture in the West over the past 10 years or so has been subject to many a campaign rebirth. This is not solely down to demographics moving on in age cycles and then the process begins again. It centres on what has traditionally been seen and marketed (since the mid-1800s) as a ‘girls-only’ enterprise. Our own deep rooted local cultures lend to this notion including my home city of Glasgow, where the traditional male disposition is one of the strong alpha male type and embracing moisturiser was a challenge at one point!

The History Yet, Men wearing make-up stretches back from 4000 BC right through to the 18th Century; Ancient Egypt/Rome, Elizabethan England and 18th Century France. There are many illustrations of men wearing make up to extenuate facial countering, nail art paint through the use of pig fats and bloods to the white powdered skin look which was in vogue during the rule of Queen Elizabeth I. The timeline continued to transcend with stage actors which in turn translated onto the silver screen where the likes of Charlie Chapin used make up tricks and flicks to draw focus on to his expressive eyes and artistry.

The cinematic influence of Metrosexual beauty continued with the polished look of Clark Gabel, John Travolta (Grease/Saturday Night Fever’s famous beautifying regime of Combs, Brylcream and a hairdryer –’Watch the hair!’) and Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan’s deep defined eyeful look. The ‘Mad Men’ of the day used such onscreen influence to further develop male-specific branding of the cosmetics industry.

I fully applied the ‘Guyliner’ and ‘Manscara’ hype of 10 years ago whilst doing spots of Presentation work for MTV UK. This wasn’t me just taking on the edgy London boys makeup look of the time as l faced the camera or simply hungout in Camden, it actually links back to my cultural heritage from Punjab, Northern India.

Makeup In Culture Male makeup in India, in particular eyeliner and mascara, isn’t just seen as a veil for the biggest Bollywood actors who have led the way for such male masculinity on the silver screen.

The everyday man of India wears eye defining dyes and paints, especially when matrimonial armoury is required.

It’s a massive cultural nuance for Grooms to apply eyeliner and mascara as part of their wedding day dress.

Traditionally applied by your sister in law (my own has been waiting years to do this and the wait continues!) to ward off evil spirts and just to look smokin’ hot!

Bloggers A growing number of Male makeup bloggers and vloggers from across Europe, USA and India are challenging the gender norms of the cosmetics industry. All influencing major brands including Tom Ford, MAC Cosmetics and Clinique to launch male or unisex product lines with smaller male focused independent brands evolving too. The pace within this market segment continues to increase exponentially, especially as gender fluidity continues to cultivate amongst millennials.

Asos, the UK based online fashion retailer, has over 750,000 Facebook views with its ‘How to do natural makeup for men’ video guide. These numbers continue to rise into the millions with vloggers such as Jake Jamie ‘The Beauty Boy’, Wayne Goss and Bretman Rock et al. who all influence a very open minded and self-expressive generation of men.

So is Men’s make-up here to stay?

It never actually went away in the first place.

How Do We Determine Lash Layers?

If you look at all the layers together, you can clearly see that there is a difference in distance from the top layer , middle layer and the lower layer, so to create that smooth top line we need to adjust our lengths and curls for each layer.

The lash industry has come such a long way in the last few years, we all strive to achieve the PERFECT set of lashes. Whether you work with classic lashes or volume lashes we can still create the perfect top lash line, by working with our natural lash layers and blending curls.

We typically have around three lash layers, some less if they have sparser lashes and some could have more layers if they have a very dense natural lash line, but on average we have around 3 layers. There are a few rules we need to keep to when we want to execute the perfect top line.

1.We must Map, this means writing on our gel patches the lengths and curls to use on our lash styling, this will allow us to work effectively and precisely, minimising any errors especially when changing lengths for a faultless transition.

The top layer are the lashes that you can see clearly and are the most visible to us when we look down at the natural lashes, these sit the highest up to the lid.

Top layer should be 2mm shorter than lower layers Example: 10mm C Curl

The middle layer will be the lashes that are in-between the highest and the lowest layers. Middle Layer should be 1mm longer than top layer and you can use a curlier curl Example: 11mm CC Curl

2.Working with more than one curl on a lash set will help in creating great lashes

So once you have decided your lash style for your client, you then need to lash map to include the layers, we call this extended mapping.

Extended Mapping This is a view of how you would see the lashes looking down from your lash position.

Example: Lower Layer \ 9D, 10D, 11D, 12D Middle Layer \ 8CC, 9CC, 10CC, 11CC Top Layer \ 8, 8C, 8C, 9C, 10C, 11, 10

Don’t forget to write on your lash patches/pads with a bright coloured pen.

Dealing with Sensitivity

Expert Lashologist™ Last quarter we addressed dealing with sensitivity issues before they occur by recognizing signs and indicators that a client may have sensitivity due to environment or cosmetics used. Methods to help us C.E.T (pronounced set up for lashes the proper consultation) and how to recognize lid sensitivity comparing to the stop light method.

While recognizing sensitivity issues surrounding the lash application process is of critical importance to a successful lash artist and their business, it isn’t the only matter that a lash artist or business owner will be faced with over time. Two of the other areas of sensitivity that can present a whole host of problems are dealing with difficult clients and dealing with difficult employees.

39 - Lashes

Difficult Clients Every lash artist and/or business owner could be faced with clients that demonstrate a lack of respect for your time, your hygiene and care standards or that they just can’t make happy. In all three cases, it may be in the best interest of the service provider to tactfully break the business relationship that they have with a particularly difficult client.

Below are some suggested examples in how you may want to deal with difficult clients:

Client break up: how to get rid of that nightmare client Lack of Respect for Your Time – Mrs No Respect “I understand that it can be difficult at times to keep a scheduled appointment, I feel I put you under a lot of stress because I need you to always be on time and not to reschedule or cancel at the last minute. I value you as a client, but I think its best you find a closer place or someone that is not as busy as me, so they can accommodate your needs better.”

If she insists she will be a good client.

Respond with: ““I want the best for you, but I cannot accommodate continually trying to rearrange my client base and their busy schedules based on your frequent tardiness. It affects me doing my best for you and I only want the best for you.” (Be prepared to give her a new place to go.)

“I have found a place closer to you, she is great, here is her number please call her for your next appointment”.

Poor Hygiene and Care Standards – Mrs Poor Hygiene “Do you remember me explaining to you the importance of coming to each appointment with clean lashes.

Keeping your lashes clean will help your extensions hold up longer ?”

Listen for her response, agreeing with her: “I understand, but your lashes don’t and I am afraid this can cause lash damage. Healthy lashes are something I take great pride in and clients with proper eyelash hygiene have healthy lashes. What happens when you don’t practice good lash and eye hygiene is a build-up of oil, dirt and bacteria. Resulting in damage to your natural lashes and could cause lash loss of your natural lashes. Attaching extensions to unclean lashes will result in poor bonding which means they will fall off easily…

“The other issue is I am having to spend so much time cleaning your lashes that I cannot fill them as full as I would like”.

“So, at this point I have no other choice but to remove your extensions and advise you not to have lash extensions put back on until they return to a more natural and healthy state, this will take approximately three months.

If you choose to go somewhere else I understand. I am only doing this for your own good.”

Stay firm with this. Make sure you have told her at least 2 times she is causing damage and if she keeps coming like this you will have no choice but to give her a break.

You Can’t Make Them Happy – Mrs No Pleasing “I really feel so bad that I have such a hard time fulfilling your needs” (not full enough, not long enough, not getting your eyes balanced, of not making you happy, leaving and getting home and not being satisfied).

“I want you to be happy; I pride myself on doing great work, making people look good and feeling great about their lashes. If I am unable to do that, I feel that you should try someone else for your next appointment and here are some recommendations” Again, as with the other types of difficult clients, you must be firm if you believe it is in both your best interest and theirs to part ways; you can suggest another lash artist or business that they may try to see if they are better suited to meet their needs. If she insists that she really is happy: “I know your saying that now, but I feel it’s best for you to give someone else a try.”

Don’t give in.

This year on the 23rd October, saw the world’s first ever 24 Hour Online Lash Conference, and what an epic event it was! Not only did it see the lash masters from across the globe merge together for this one event, it saw the whole industry come together, for a cause very dear to my heart - Raising Awareness for Multiple Sclerosis.

I had been looking forward to the day since it was first announced! The lash industry is often thought about as some what mean, but this event gave the whole industry a new thought - loving!

My dear friends in the Community decided to come together to create awareness for this disease. All money raised was donated and split between various MS causes and together the conference made a massive difference.

The King of Lashes aka Petr Lhotský is our next speaker - explaining “Weight Wrap Limits”. Understanding this subject will give you an expert understanding of volume lashing limitations - and possibilities!

Famous for her styling, Agnieszka Kwiatkowska presents to us “Extreme Styling: Kim Kardashian Look” in her video for the conference.

Next up we have creative duo! Henrietta Orosz and Timi Kayser-Bereczki with their presentation on “Lash Art Planning from A-Z”

Donna is the woman to help, with two businesses and six children, she’s a superwoman so her secrets are something we all need to hear! (I just don’t know how she does it!)

Following on from a similar theme, we move onto “Time Management” big topic!! And the lovely Kristina Dovbijenko, gave us a perfect video.

NALA founder and wonderful person, Levi Shephard brings us a powerful presentation on “How and When to Scale Your Lash Business”

Next up, my gorgeous , amazing and talented friend is Louise Tierney. Also one of the incredible organizers of the conference, Louise is also the founder of Lash Inc and is one of my best friends in the industry! She gave us a topic that many growing businesses will need to listen to : “Licensing, Franchising and Investors”.

Number 37 is sweetheart Hanna Babanakava, presenting something not so sweet.. The Lash Shed! Her video helps us to know all about this and allows you to communicate more effectively with your clients about “Eyelash Shed and Biology”.

Number 34 is the lovely Angeles Barros on “The Importance of Client Home Care” because one of the most annoying things is when clients don’t listen to their after care, or maybe you need to update your own after care!

The beautiful Sonia Macias is our next speaker, who joins in on the Fantasy presentations (fantasy is finally getting it’s attention!) with her video on “Fantasy Lash Art Do’s and Don’ts”

Want to know how do you stand apart from the crowd? Jessika Aude Gautier the next speaker will shine some light on the subject in her video “Dare to Be Different and Get Paid Accordingly”.

All the way from Canada, Number 39 is Trish Anja (aka Trish Van Duinen) with her presentation “Russian Volume - American Volume”.

Number 40 is none other than Queen Bee herself, Emily Chu-Lee. Emily talks to us about “Saving Our Assets - Lashing Ergonomics & Health”. She’s an amazing person and lash artist, so her video is perfect!

Sticking with the Canadian theme, the next speaker was girl boss Courtney Buhler. We all know her lash brand Sugarlash Pro, so it was just right for her to talk to us about “Branding” in her presentation.

Speaker number 42 was Lisa Magee, who gave us a triumph of a presentation as she spoke to us about “Blasting Through Obstacles and Achieving Goals”. We all want to achieve our girls and Lisa is helping a girl out!

Next up is the ever so glamorous and gorgeous Mydygma Nimbueva! One of my favourite lash artists in LA. We were so lucky to have her give a presentation on “Feather Fly Style”, as she is the artist to styles the celebrities!

Ellie Malmin is a unique person, and if you ever get to meet her, cherish it!

While i was watching her video, I knew i would love it but i never expected to laugh so hard at the start. She is amazing, and her presentation on ““Recognising Sensitivities Before They Happen” is too.

Hilaree Brand was the next speaker, who walked us through some great solutions in her presentation “Tools for Tough Conversations”. She also gave all members a downloadable worksheet she had prepared to accompany the presentation!

Number 46 was the lovely Nikki Jacobson. Her presentation on her topic “Eye Shaping and Lash Mapping” was perfect for everyone who struggles with various eye shapes and lash mapping skills?

Michelle Rath is another dear friend close to my heart. I always love being in her presence, so we were all very lucky to have her present “Taking the Mystery Out of L and L+ Curls”

Next up, is another dear friend - The beautiful Stefani Altieri. During the conference, she gave us her presentation video of “Curing and Adhesives” you can never know too much about Adhesives!

Staying in Lithunia, we are joined

by Laura Kaminskiene. Many lash artists wonder how to become a trainer and Laura helps you out with her presentation on “How To Begin a Career as a Lash Educato

Tamsen Horton is the next presenter, and she spoke to us about something very interesting. She gives us some clarity in “Independent Contractor or Employee?” Tamsen is an Attorney, and gives us a lesson that we all need if we run business or are thinking about hiring people in the future.

Number 50.... 50!! Is the wonder that is Katie Gross. “Switch Your Habits to Change Your Outcome (and Income)” was her topic for the conference, and what a fantastic topic it was. A great explanation of how you can alter your reality by changing your mindset.

The penultimate video was for colour addicts. Marina Larskaya presents “Ombre, Makeup and Highlight Techniques in Lash Extensions”

From the legend herself! The lady behind the mechanics of 24 Hour Lash Confernece... my beautiful & intelligent friend. Jill Heijligers-Peloquin with “The Anatomy of Mastery” - what makes a MASTER?

Can you believe that 54 people in the industry, took their time for free to give thoroughly detailed, jam packed full of information lessons for the cause. AND not just the speakers, but the attendees.

The people that wanted to learn, but also wanted to donate to a charity - is amazing. Everyone who took part in the experience should feel great! It’s an incredible cause to be a part of.

As an MS Society Ambassador, on behalf of the whole MS Society, and those who suffer and those who are loved ones of sufferers - I say thank you.

The Looks – Sinful Lashes Today’s lash styles vary from country to cities to each artist.

Forget about the rules of the past, today anything goes in lash styling. Sinful Lashes has three divisions that give us a unique perspective in Los Angeles California.

Right: 1940’s

We have our Lash Academy, where we have trained and certified more than 1,000 lash artists, our online store which features our line of luxury lash products and our Salon where we meet and talk to 100’s of local artists monthly and where we see about 150 clients a week.

This helps us keep our pulse of what styles are trending in our multi-cultural city. We are seeing a shift in what clients are asking for. In previous years it was “more is better” and now numerous clients are asking for shorter and wispy lashes. We added hybrid lashes to our menu 5 months ago and find that more than 50% of clients ask for this style.

For this edition we wanted to explore lash styles and trends from the 1940’s through today’s modern woman.

Left: 1950’s

1940’s started the Golden Age of Hollywood Starlets. False lashes became a staple for women. This was also when we were introduced to the Femme Fatale, the seductress. The look: strong Brows, bold lips, chiselled cheeks. Lashes were also bold and we used Sinful Lashes L Curl in .03 and .07 9-10-11-12-13-12-11 to create drama.

47 - Lashes

1950’s we see the looks change a bit, a sexy Girl Next Door. This is when the true starlets were born and we were introduced to the Cat Eyeliner. Marilyn Monroe made the look infamous. Bright red lip, bold cat eyeliner and soft blush.

The 1980’s we see looks going decadent in color and boldness. The more the better. Excess came back and we see disco, punk rock and women getting bold with their makeup. Vibrant blues, pinks and purples and shimmers were worn alone or together to create impact.

For this look we used Sinful Lashes CC Curl .07 9-10-11-12-13-12 and we colour blocked by blending our hot pink CC Curl .07 in the peak 11-12-13 to create a bold look.

The 1960’s equals loads of lashes.

The youth dominated this decade and we see a new brash look. Music was new and London set the world stage on creating a whole new sense of fashion.

Short skirts, bold colors, big liner, bottom lashes and lighter lips. For this look we used Sinful Lashes CC Curl in .03 and .07 9-10-11-12-13-12-11-10 bottom lashes we used Sinful Lashes premade fans in 8 and 9mm.

The 1970’s we see everything going neutral. Hippies, Antiestablishment, women’s liberation, earthly beauty was being celebrated. Natural hair, wide jeans, feathers, barley there crop tops, and long wispy lashes. For this look we used for the first layer of lashes Sinful Lashes CC Curl in .07 9-10-11-12 top layer D Curl .05 13-14-15-16 to create a boho wispy look.

Now! Today we have a variety in looks; the only clear trend is everything goes.

In Lashes we see the trend in 2018 getting a bit more serious. Wispier, shorter and a bit lighter. Today’s woman is a boss, wife, mom, housekeeper, she is Super Woman. Even our celebrities are letting their hair down on social media and showing us glimpses of what they look like on their days off, they look like us. What a relief! Our clients today need their lashes to go from Day to Night. For this look we used our Sinful Volume in CC Curl.07 8-9-1011-12-11-10 and varied the lengths in each section of her map to give. Wispy natural look.

The NALA Awards Gala

and Conference

Part 1 – The Conference In May, the National Association of Lash Artists (NALA) hosted its first annual conference and awards gala. Delegates, presenters and sponsors came from all around the globe to the Springhill Suites

by Marriott in Vaughan, just north of Toronto, Canada to learn, network and create lasting relationships.

The fun started early for NALA Members with a members-only VIP Cocktail Party on the evening of May 4. It was a cosy event included a hosted bar and with many of the conference speakers, sponsors, and of course, the VIP NALA members in attendance.

Tasty hors d’oeuvres circulated the room as guests made connections, met their lash idols and took a selfie or two.

Day one of the conference started bright and early on May 5 with a hot breakfast spread in the atrium. The conference room was filled with the wafting smells

of fresh coffee and savory sausages, mixed with an energetic buzz of excitement for the day to come.

In the front of the room stood a raised stage with podium and large screen, while along the perimeter, vendor tables displayed a wonderful array of lash supplies and knickknacks. In the middle of the room were several round tables, neatly draped in crisp white linens and topped off with bursting swag bags all filled with goodies and a conference workbook for each delegate.

The day’s presenter lineup was a great mix of lectures and hands on activities.

Hilaree Brand kicked off the morning with a talk on ‘Healthy Boundaries in Work and Life’, followed by Julia Mann with a hands-on practice of ‘Volume Fanning’. After a short morning break in which you could visit some of the vendor tables, grab more coffee or get a sugar fix; Emily Lee (yours truly) took to the stage with a lecture on ‘How to Win/Prepare for Competitions’, followed by Otto Mitter with a ‘Lash and Brow Color and Styling’ talk with hands-on play time.

Lunch on the first day included a variety of homemade f latbreads, several fresh salad options, grilled vegetables with a garlic lemon dressing, delectable chipotle maple chicken breast, parmesan crusted cod, and assorted mini pastries and cookies for dessert. After all the delegates were fed and watered, the final two speakers of the day were Laura Kaminskiene with a ‘Professional Etiquette and Motivation’ lecture, and Tara Walsh presenting ‘Marketing 101’.

In between some of the presenters, the energetic and very animated Jessi Love would take to the stage and generously give away prizes for everything from correctly answering trivia questions, to epic dance battles including a sexy Santa Claus who makes you work to win your presents!

The conference room doors were then closed so the venue so fairies can work their magic to transform the space into the Awards Gala (which will be covered in the Part Two article).

The second day of the conference kicked off with hot breakfast in the atrium. Once again, delegates were greeted with the soothing scent of freshly brewed coffee and fluffy eggs, just what the doctor ordered after a late night of celebration and responsible debauchery!

The round tables in the conference room returned to their former crisp and white-linen glory, and once again we were greeted with a teeming swag bag. The morning line up for the second day was Kara Bubley with a talk on ‘Microblading and Semi-Permanent Makeup’, followed by Ellie Malmin on ‘Eye Conditions and Sensitivities’, then rounding off the morning with Lia Juhas with ‘Being in Control of Your Business’.

Our post-lunch speakers were Roxan Canty presenting ‘Adhesive Theory and Safety’, Tamsen Horton on ‘Lashing Legally’ and Courtney Buhler lecturing on ‘Instagram’. Between speakers, we saw our sexy Santa, Jessi Love reemerge with more goodies to hand out with even tougher skill-testing questions. The day wrapped with some heartfelt thank you’s, more photo ops, and in my case, some more shopping at the vendor tables!

What a whirlwind of a weekend! There were plenty of laughs, a few tears, some triumphs, new relationships born and best of all, a plethora of education gained which is a priceless investment in yourself that will last a lifetime and pay in dividends.

The next NALA Awards Gala and Conference will be May 5/6, 2019 in Edmonton, Alberta.

RC: First of all let me thank you

the opportunity to become the

official distributor of Lash Inc Hungary. It’s a real honour for me.

LT: I knew the first time I met you that you would be perfect as an Editor for Lash Inc, I am very thankful you accepted RC: Louise, if this was the first time I met you, how would you introduce yourself?

LT: My name is Louise Tierney, I am the editor-in-chief and owner of Lash Inc Magazine International.

I started the magazine in October 2013 and the first magazine launched early 2014. Since then we have gone International with regional versions across 10 territories.

RC: How did your career begin in the Lash Industry? The story of the first and the biggest magazine in the Lash industry Lash Inc magazine LT: I entered the industry in 2004. My inital degree was in Science and my Masters degree was in E-commerce Technology. I worked in various jobs in teaching and IT for several years before retraining in holistic therapy and then entering the beauty industry.

I then begain one of Scotlands largest Beauty training academies and in 2009 I started a lash line called Glam Lash.

The lash line was developed purely because at the time there were no adhesives on the market which worked well. I worked with a manufacturer to develop a flexible adhesive. This one product took off amazingly well, It went viral and within a few months we were getting large orders from all over the world.

In 2011, I brought to market the first pre-blended semi permanent mascara called Myscara (R) . This product was very popular for several years and attracted an investor who I eventually sold the lash line to and they rebranded as My Beautiful Eyes and launched the Mylash range in the UK. I then moved on to Lash Inc. Lash Inc was concieved at a marketing meeting on my last day working for my old company on Glam Lash. At the time there were nailmagazines, tanning magazines, make up magazines but no eyelash magazines. I had a feeling that the market was ready for it and that it would work and after leaving the marketing meeting I went to the train station. As soon as I got on the train I set up my laptop. Lash Inc was the name that popped into my head and I did some research to see if it had a trademark a domain etc.. There was no trademark so I decided to apply for it. By the end of my 4 hour train journey to Glasgow in Scotland. I had registered a domain name, applied for the trademark emailed some of my contacts and got my first advertiser.

Lash Inc was born that day.

RC: Where do you see the Lash Industry 5years from now?

LT: When I think 5 years from now I visualise the Lash Industry being just as popular as the Nail Industry.

With Lash Bars common place and I’m having your lashes done will be as common place as I’m having my nails done or going for a haircut.

RC: What makes you happy outside of work?

LT: I love to spend time with my family (My son, boyfriend and parents). I love nights in getting cosy and just relaxing. I also love to visit new places and thankfully due to the nature of my job I have visited some lovely places including Hungary for your contest. I loved my time in Budapest and Iook forward to returning.

RC: Do you have a motto?

LT: There is no such thing as failure only learning.

Taking a quick glance at the Instagram feed, you can instantly see she has decided to take a theme and stick with it. In this instance, she has used a pink and white writing post for every 2 images she posts, in order for it to in line on the right hand side throughout her feed. She’s using this for her customers which is a fantastic way to inform them with any cancellations, a lash quote to keep it fun and some informative lash facts. This is a great way to break up the “just a lash page”.

She has also included both video as well as images. This is important for you potential and current clients to see how you create their volume lashes, the fact that you are hand making their

Unlike all the other instagram accounts we have chosen, Karolina really takes some time to create her posts for her feed. You can see she that she also uses the same lighting for all her posts on her feed, but she also takes the time to create a gorgeous blue and gold background for each post.

Whereas other accounts will use the colours for an actual post, she has used them to go around her posts, this is gorgeous and breaks up the feed on it’s own. It’s such a smart idea, and we love the flow of the whole feed. Her images are not only gorgeous, but they want you to get lashes done by Karolina asap.. which is the whole aim!

Know your products by heart When you’re selling beauty products, it’s not enough to have pictures and know their names. For instance, you should be well aware of the answers to the questions most customers will be asking about.

What are the chemicals in the adhesive?

Should I be careful who applies the eyelash extensions and should they be trained? How are the lash extensions applied? Are lash extensions okay for everyone?

This is the same when it comes to your brand. The more you know about your brand’s statement, the better you can sell your products because you believe in it.

Make content valuable The next step to making sure your social media campaign is a success is to focus on producing excellent content.

This is what will catch your intended audience’s attention. Initially, you must have high quality photos (especially for Instagram posts), and secondly interesting content. Of course, your content shouldn’t be limited to pictures as you may need to involve yourself in the process to market yourself as a legit lash extension artist.

Creating your little creative studio Brands are twice as effective when they can relate a face to it. When you include a human touch to your posts — like doing selfies with your products or doing stories on either Facebook or IG, your subscribers will be more responsive because you come across as ‘real’.

Take note that there will be unpredictable days that may seem like no one is responsive at all, but you have to be steadfast and resume your postings. This way, people can always scroll back and see what they’ve missed.

Besides, the more you stay active online, the better you can stay aware of the latest online trends. You have to be in sync with the times, after all.

Go beyond social media marketing efforts Truth be told, if you’re aiming to master digital trade, it’s not enough to just rely on social media. Assembling your own digital marketing team might be the next step if you’re managing to gather a solid fanbase of loyal customers.

For one, you can setup your own website, publish your own blog post or establish your own vlog (this is effective for users who are more video-inclined and have more responses with their videos). Eventually, you can produce merchandise to further promote your brand. You can also have contests, promos, and give discounts to your products.
