LEADERSHIP MESSAGE Hello La Salle Community, What a privilege it is to be named Principal of La Salle College Preparatory. I am truly grateful for all the well wishes and words of encouragement I have received from the community.

I am acutely aware of the responsibility I have to follow some incredible past principals, but more importantly, to carry out the mission of our namesake, St. John Baptist de La Salle, who believed in inspiring others how to teach and care for young people, how to meet failure and frailty with compassion, and how to affirm, strengthen and heal.

As a product of Catholic schools (Paraclete High - Go Spirits; and Loyola Marymount - Go Lions!!) and a parent of Catholic school graduates, I am very aware of the benefits of a faith based education and am also aware of the sacrifices many families go through to send their children to Catholic schools. Similar to my childhood experiences with my teachers, know that students here at La Salle are surrounded by faculty/staff who promote a safe and nurturing environment, upholding the dignity and mutual respect among all members of the community.

My journey in Catholic education is entering its 18th year and in that time, I have served in many roles: classroom teacher, basketball and golf coach, athletic director, dean of students, and now principal. At the heart of that journey has always been a profound commitment to nurturing not just academic excellence but also character development and practical learning. This philosophy has been my guiding light, illuminating my path as an educator, mentor, and a member of a vibrant educational family. This philosophy will continue in my new leadership role.

My commitment to students extends beyond textbooks and examinations.

As a former long time dean, character building has always been near and dear to my heart. Holistic development of adolescents encompasses the nurturing of virtues that define outstanding human beings. Integrity, compassion, respect, and empathy are values educators should instill in each student. Is it easy to do? Do kids always make the right decisions? We all know the answer to that. Pedagogical training teaches educators that the brain is still developing for teenagers. So with that knowledge, it is incumbent upon us

as educators, parents, and community members to make every moment a learning moment. Make every moment an opportunity to teach kids about honesty, accountability, trustworthiness, and bottomline, that actions have consequences. When my own kids were younger, one of my most memorable vacations was when we traveled to New York and took a tour of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Seeing their cadet prayer during the tour has stuck with me over the years and is the basis of my educational philosophy: “Choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never be content with a half-truth when the whole can be won.”

Knowledge is not confined within the walls of our classrooms. Educators should champion experiential learning, recognizing that understanding content is fortified through real-life application. In short, practical learning is a must. Pedagogy should emphasize hands-on experiences, internships, and collaborative projects that bridge theory with practice.

By engaging with real-world challenges, students gain invaluable skills and insights that transcend textbooks. We are fortunate here at La Salle because our Strategic Plan calls for us to elevate our Lasallian Mission; inspire future leaders; set the stage for success; foster long-term growth and sustainability; attract and retain the best talent; and invest in our future. In short, providing a practical education is already in our DNA and my plan is to continue to sustain that strategy.

As we move forward, I invite each member of our community - students, teachers, staff, parents, alumni, and benefactors - to embrace this shared vision. Together, we will integrate character education into our curriculum, foster a culture of respect and

inclusivity, and provide opportunities for practical learning that prepares our students not just for academic success but for life beyond these halls.

CENTERS OF INNOVATION DEBUT AT LA SALLE

THE BIG IDEA: CAREER PATHWAYS AT LA SALLE

For years, La Salle’s mission has been to prepare students to be thoughtful citizens in their communities and adept professionals in their chosen fields. But the effort to prepare students for the current world is never-ending, and La Salle has added new methods of teaching to its curriculum, called the Centers of Innovation.

These Centers are programs that expose students to insights and skills in particular industries, like the CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation which focuses on medical field careers and officially opened last year. Even after four years of rigorous high school classes, students are often challenged to know what major they’d like to declare upon entering college and university programs. It can be a lot to ask of 18 year olds, and many change their major several times which can burden them with high costs of time and money in their collegiate studies.

But the CARLOW Center now has counterparts at La Salle. Two more Centers of Innovation have opened this August, welcoming students into programming for cinematic art and film production and global studies and cultural exchange. The idea is to expose students and give them hands-on experiences in career fields like the medical sciences, global studies, and cinematic production, earlier on in their education, fueling a greater sense of confidence in their studies upon entering higher education.

THE ROAD TO SAÕ PAULO FROM LOS ANGELES TO SAÕ PAULO

At seventeen, senior Mohuli “Pammi” Ganguly ’24, is confident she’d like to pursue biological research in college and in a career, in no small part due to her hands-on research at La Salle’s CARLOW Center.

She’s been leaning into research and lab work since her sophomore year, first interning with a professor at Occidental College, and following that with research she’s done related to the effects of electrolytes, drugs and medications on the survivability and health of heart cells.

After winning an award for her research project at the Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair, she entered into the International Stem Cell Conference and was the only high school candidate chosen to present at the event in Saõ Paulo, Brazil. There she connected with professionals in her field and was offered a position in a lab at UCLA. So what is a high achieving high school student to do after she’s accomplished all of this? She returns to the lab to do more research, this time on a new project.

Mahuli plans to explore how a COVID-19 protein affects the rhythms and impulses of the heart. For that, she’ll need to find electrodes or tap into her knowledge of robotics and programming she learned in her Freshman year at La Salle and create this technology herself.

For Mahuli, the CARLOW Center has been a crucial part of her Lasallian experience. She lights up as she recalls the moment she realized she was working in a professional grade lab.

Ms. Parga, Director of the CARLOW Center, wore protective gloves as she pulled nitrogen from a tank and Mahuli observed “It was just this

cloud of white, and it was a moment where we’ve created this lab and we're making research that potentially has an impact on human life down the line,” she said.

She beams with gratitude at her experience at La Salle’s CARLOW Center. “The aspects of research are very grueling, especially stem cell research. And to be exposed to that, pre-college is making me a more viable candidate for professors and their research projects in college,” she said.

A SNAPSHOT OF STUDENT LIFE, ONE PHOTO AT A TIME Audrey Jones ’24 is only 17, but she speaks with the passion of a woman who knows what she wants to see at La Salle.

A love of photography has propelled her into positions as the head of sports photography and a commissioner on the communications team for Student Life.

Jones’ vision is for school bulletins and marketing materials to showcase current students and show a true reflection of the multi-talented student body. While photography and fanship abounds for well attended sports like football and basketball games, she wants to give more exposure and build fanships for La Salle’s broad spectrum of activities and sports, like the top notch Girls basketball team who’ve gone on to win CIF-Southern Section championships the last two years in a row.

“Mr. Carter really makes me feel like I can accomplish my dreams, and like they’re worth something,” she notes.

The Center is focused on programming for students interested in all aspects of film production and content creation. Currently, the Center produces the school-news show The Lancer Beat and the more entertaining and creative monthly show, Late Night Lancer.

Lasallians participating in the Center learn about the film industry by completing capstone projects and yearend showcases. They’re also exposed to mentorship with Hollywood professionals and ongoing La Salle partnerships with major studios like Universal, Warner Bros. and Netflix.

Jialin Sun, Director of the Center of Cultural Perspectives, focuses each trip abroad around interdisciplinary learning of language, culture and an intention, incorporating one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into the learning mix.

A MATTER OF (GLOBAL) PERSPECTIVE Joining the two other Centers of Innovation is the Center for Cultural Perspectives, which has already made its mark on the student body. Set up as a hub to enrich students’ lives with cultural exchange, the school has recently welcomed students from other Lasallian institutions on short-term exchange trips from China and France.

La Salle students can take advantage of the longer summer break to travel abroad through the Center as well, like Gerald Po ’25, a 16 year-old junior, who traveled to Taiwan and then South Korea. What he remembers are memories that flow out of him in record speed. Like spending time with aboriginal people in Taiwan, learning to make a special holiday meal of braised beef wrapped in banana leaves, and the friendships he made with Korean students on the beaches of Busan. He still talks to them and cherishes the jacket his Korean friends gave him when he returned to the U.S. For Po, travel abroad has expanded his interest in seeking more knowledge about his own Filipino background. The

In addition to travel, the Center serves as the home for globally inspired activities like the Model UN and Global Envoy Club. Ms. Sun continues to program travel and cultural exchange, looking for connections in Italy focused around theater, and a link between the CARLOW Medical Center and robotics league with Roberts College in Istanbul in the coming year.

In a world that is increasingly globally connected, Ms. Sun sees the Center of Cultural Perspectives as a hub for gaining diplomacy skills and intercultural understanding, necessary for professionals today. “The purpose is to create learning opportunities to help students develop global competency in areas/fields that our students are interested in expanding knowledge, skills and pursue a career,” she said.

With so many new opportunities for learning available to them, Ganguly, Po and Jones reflect on their appreciation for attending La Salle. “I feel a lot of us, including myself, didn't recognize how much of a privilege [we] have going here. Because I know other private schools don't have [these] programs. And so it's been a privilege to be a part of it,” said Jones.

According to President Perry Martin, the Centers promote expanded learning opportunities at the same time they seek to fulfill the Lasallian mission. “Our Centers instill values of service, compassion and social responsibility. Healthcare programs promote care for the vulnerable. Cinematic arts foster creativity and expression. Cultural experiences promote tolerance and global understanding,” Martin said.

Looking back, he is grateful for the leadership and teamwork skills he gained at La Salle, especially through athletics-- qualities that served him well in his entrepreneurial business career of more than 40 years, including starting and operating their family business, The Outlet by ELS, for more than 30 years.

OLIVIA BOHANEC ’24 SELECTED AS 2024 TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PRINCESS On Monday, October 2, 2023, on the front lawn of Tournament House, Olivia Bohanec ’24 was selected as one of the seven members of the 2024 Rose Queen and Royal Court for this year’s Tournament of Roses Parade. A current senior, Olivia is involved in sports such

as Cross Country and Track and Field. She is also the proud president and founder of the Trader Joe’s club and is passionate about serving her community. Be sure to watch out for her on January 1st as she represents both La Salle and Pasadena in the Rose Parade.

PAMMI GANGULY ’24 PRESENTS RESEARCH IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL We are thrilled to share the accomplishments of one of our CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation students, Pammi Ganguly '24. At the International Society for Stem Cell Research in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Pammi had an incredible opportunity to present her research on the effects of different heart medications and electrolytes on the sustainability of skin-cell derived stem cells induced to differentiate into cardiomyocytes.

The conference project presentations were exclusive to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows; however, Pammi's impressive work in the field earned her an invitation to participate. Her impressive research caught the attention of industry professionals, leading to lab positions at top universities like UCLA and the University of Michigan.

FULL STEAM

When the Innovation and Design course debuted at La Salle in the 2017 - 2018 academic school year, it was the beginning of a program that would grow much larger. What started as a single course has become a full fledged program, offering students interdisciplinary opportunities to explore the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) fields.

Students apply the concepts they’ve learned in the classroom and leverage equipment and materials at the school’s Innovation and Design Lab to bring their projects to life. Using computers, software, and assorted materials, they’ve built robots, technology components, and aerospace creations. La Salle’s STEAM program is part of what sets the school apart as a first choice institution in the San Gabriel Valley.

Indeed, this year La Salle has welcomed one of the largest incoming classes in recent years. However, with more students comes a need for updated equipment and classes, spurring a campaign in support of reinvigorating the Innovation and Design Lab on campus.

The fundraising campaign is aptly named Full STEAM Ahead, as La Salle raises funds to renew the Lab with additional 3D printers, performance computers, CAD and Design 28

software, and electronics components, along with expanded programming to serve increased student interest in the STEAM fields.

“The realm of technology and engineering is in a constant state of evolution. As our current high-tech equipment is used and wears out, it not only requires replacement but also necessitates updating to meet current industry standards,” stated Michael Keating, Chair of the Engineering and Technology Department at La Salle.

An investment toward La Salle’s Full STEAM Ahead campaign’s $500,000 goal is an investment in students that will pay dividends for years to come. That’s because encouraging students’ interest in the STEAM fields makes economic sense. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. workers in STEM fields, on average, earn double what their peers make in other fields. Jobs in the STEM fields are set to grow 10.8 percent through 2032, as opposed to an average growth of 2.3 percent for non-STEM fields.

At La Salle, the STEAM program is unique as it also recognizes art as a focused discipline, allowing students to explore how creativity, design and innovation impact the sciences, math and technology. A focus on art and its intersectionality with the other STEM disciplines could awaken a student’s

AHEAD interest in high-paying creative fields like User Experience (UX) design, data visualization, graphic and web design.

It is this interdisciplinary approach that brings students together, encouraging them to collaborate and enhance one another’s learning in programs across campus.

For example, one student can build robotic elements and components in the Design Lab that might benefit another student’s medical experiment in the CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation.

“This collaboration facilitates the development of medical solutions that integrate technological advancements and engineering expertise, and foster a deeper understanding of how technology impacts healthcare,” Keating said.

When students simulate flight with rockets and airplanes they’ve built with their own hands, they better grasp the laws of physics in motion. Other projects, like crafting buildings and architectural structures, encourages students to apply their mathematics and physics skills in real-world and career-focused applications.

The creative opportunities abound when students work together, and merge learning with passion projects. The

interdisciplinary and collaborative approach between the STEAM program and La Salle’s Centers of Innovation expand learning possibilities. For example, students interested in camera and film technology might merge that with storytelling principles to create a multimedia project in the Center for Cinematic Arts. “This holistic approach prepares students to navigate complex real-world challenges by leveraging diverse knowledge and perspectives,” Keating adds.

But the new funding campaign won’t just stop at securing newer equipment for the Lab space; it goes to build students’ professional ambitions and business acumen skills as well.

Funds will also be allocated to STEAM programming, like workshops and lessons that guide students in formulating business models for A, B and C level funding around their technological creations. It’s yet another way that La Salle leverages its curriculum to set students up for their professional lives beyond high school and college.

ACADEMIC DECATHLON Embark on a journey with our exceptional Lancer scholars as they conquer academic heights on the global stage! At the beginning of this school year, we witnessed a triumphant chapter at the World Scholars Cup Global Rounds in London, where nine of our scholars showcased their brilliance among 600+ participants worldwide. Among the accolades, Arthur Camera ’24 secured unprecedented 1st place, leading our senior team—comprising Arthur, Katareena Roska ’24, and junior Jackson Simone ’25—to our first-ever team title.

In a historic moment for Lancers, six students achieved gold in all six Scholars Challenge categories, marking a new milestone in our academic history. The debates were dominated with a 7-2 finish, with Arthur earning the individual debate title and contributing to the team’s victory. The Scholars Bowl witnessed another triumph, as juniors Lucas Truong ’25, Jeremy Sung ’25, and Sawyer Firestone ’25 claimed the title by only missing five questions out of 60.

Individual accomplishments also stood out, with notable rankings such as Jackson at 5th, Lucas at 4th, and Arthur clinching the top spot. Our Lancers showcased their prowess in team competition with a 3rd place finish for one team and a commendable 9th place for another.

From the vibrant streets of London to the prestigious halls of Yale, our Lancer Scholars continued to shine at the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions.

Facing off against 1,500+ students from 60+ countries, our scholars secured second place overall. Arthur, Katareena, and Jackson led the charge, achieving impressive rankings in various team challenges, debates, and writing.

HOMECOMING WEEK LancerPalooza Homecoming Week hit our school like a wave of music festival vibes, creating a symphony of excitement and a crescendo of school spirit! From the rocking tunes of LancerPalooza to the thrilling Homecoming Game, this year’s homecoming week was an unforgettable journey through various music genres and eras.

Kicking off with the anticipation of LancerPalooza, our theme for the year, transported us to a music festival wonderland. LancerPalooza Homecoming Week had it all – from country twangs to ’70s grooves, funky tie-dye creations to legendary rock ’n roll styles, and hip-hop beats that turned our campus into a rhythmic haven.

As our Lancers embraced each theme with creativity and flair, the school buzzed with energy during lunchtime activities, featuring line dancing, tie-dye extravaganzas, rockin’ makeup studios, and even a Football vs. Cheer Trivia game that added a competitive edge to the hip-hop vibes.

The grand finale, the Music Festival theme, brought the house down with a Homecoming Rally that showcased our electrifying school spirit.

But the pinnacle of the week was the Homecoming Game, where Lancers showed up in full force to support our team. Congratulations to our Homecoming King, Arthur Camara ’24, and Queen, Avery Ward ’24, who reigned over the festivities with grace and pride.

As the curtain falls on this spectacular Homecoming Week, let’s echo the cheers, laughter, and camaraderie that made it truly epic. Until next year, Lancers, keep the spirit alive and rock on!

DASH AWARD The Dash Award is a scholarship that was instated in 2016 in honor of Arion Tavakoli ’09 who passed away in 2014.

This scholarship honors a graduating senior who lives each day with passion to make a difference and has a love and appreciation of life, which are the same values that Arion showed during his short time on this earth.

This $1,500 award is made possible by private donations from Arion’s friends and family who have a desire to keep Arion’s memory alive at La Salle. The 2023 recipient of the Dash Award, nominated by La Salle’s faculty and staff and then chosen by the Tavakoli Family, was John "Jack" Koehler.

On July 19th, Alumni Football Players were invited back to campus to meet Coach Ben Buys and see the current Varsity team in action. Following practice, alumni who wanted to play mixed in with current players for a friendly game on the newly renovated Kohorst Field. We look forward to welcoming more alumni back next year for this new tradition.

CLASS OF 2013 REUNION The Class of 2013 celebrated their 10 Year Reunion on Friday, November 24th on the patio at El Cholo in the Paseo Colorado.

Nearly 60 members of the class were in attendance along with favorite faculty members Mr. Tom O'Connor, Mr. Ed O'Connor, Mrs. Kjersti Holyfield ’04, and Mrs Lisa Charley (formerly Schulman).

ALUMNI ADOPT-A-FAMILY

On December 2nd, alumni volunteers along with family members and friends wrapped 200+ presents that were purchased with alumni donations for the needy families the Alumni Association adopted for the holidays in connection with La Salle's 28th annual Adopt-A-Family program. The Wrapping Party took place in the dining hall with plenty of coffee, hot chocolate and holiday cheer. Santa was also on hand for pictures with alumni, kids and pets.

Many thanks to the 88 alumni donors who donated over $9,000 to the cause. This year's families came to us from the Salvation Army in Pasadena and Hathaway-Sycamores in Pasadena. Due to the success of our donation drive we were able to fulfill Christmas wishes for 2 families from Hathaway-Sycamores, 5 families from the Salvation Army, and 100+ single soldiers from Camp Pendleton.

Thank you to all who participated to make this an unforgettable Christmas for those in need.

50 YEAR REUNION The Class of 1973 celebrated their Fifty-Year Reunion May 24-25, 2023. The festivities kicked off with a Welcome Reception at Matt Denny’s Ale House in Arcadia on Wednesday evening followed by the Golden Diploma Presentation, Campus Tour and Luncheon on campus on Thursday morning. Golden Grads received their Golden Diplomas during the 64th Commencement Exercises in front of the Class of 2023. A private Reunion Party followed on Thursday evening.

Ken Moscaret has lived in the Seattle suburb of Sammamish since 1996 with his Canadian wife of 35 years, Liz. They have two boys in their early 30s. Ken was a corporate litigator and trial attorney who left the practice of law 30 years ago to become an expert witness testifying about the "business of law" in large trials (www.FeeDispute.com). Ken and Liz co-founded a one-of-akind youth mentorship non-profit 20 years ago called Athletes For Kids (www.AthletesForKids. org). Alaska Airlines and the Seattle Seahawks are major AFK sponsors.

After their 50 Year Reunion in 2022, northern CA 1970 alums including Steve Singer ’70, Mike Moran ’70 and Pete Bukunt ’70 gather for golf every two to three months. Locations have included Poppy Ridge in Livermore, Alameda, Bridges in San Ramon, Moffett Field in Mountain View, and Boundary Oak in Walnut Creek

Jeff Maldonado worked as inhouse counsel for Verizon for 30 years, the last 10 as chief counsel to the President of Sales, supervising a group of 20 attorneys that reviewed Verizon’s marketing and advertising. Jeff is now retired and he and his wife live in Westlake Village. He is staying active with pilates, mentoring young men in the Catholic Big Brothers program and doing as much traveling as possible.

Rocco Liberio attended USC, obtained a JD from Loyola Law School and then an LLM (Master of Laws) from the University of San Diego Law School. He practiced law for over 40 years before retiring. He and his wife Kathie have been married for 46 years, have three grown children, and one granddaughter.

Rob Hales has been in the financial industry his entire career and is currently working at US Bank as a Vice President, Technical Solutions Engineer. He is looking forward to his quickly approaching retirement so that he can spend more time with his family and travel. He enjoys hiking, fishing, golfing and playing guitar and still gets together with classmates to jam on occasion.

David Frey is retiring this year after working as a professional photographer for almost 50 years. He and his wife have been married for 33 years. They have three children and are getting ready to move out of California and on to Nashville for a change of pace and fun retirement.

Dennis McKenna has worked as an entrepreneur, publisher, editor and investor. For many years he was co-founder and CEO of a national publishing, events and market research/advisory firm focused on digital technology in the public sector.

Nick Roman has been the local host of 89.3 NPR’s “All Things Considered” for the last ten years and in public radio for more than 40 years. He has taught broadcast journalism and podcasting at Cal State Long Beach for over thirty years. He and his wife Mary have two grown daughters and live in Laguna Niguel.

Kevin Moore ’79 (L) and Victor Polek ’74 had never met until they found themselves seated together at Fenway Park on August 26, 2023. Both were visiting Boston (Kevin lives in Altadena and Victor resides in Hendersonville, TN) to see the Dodgers play the Red Sox. They had a great time chatting and enjoying the game!

Tom Brinton spent his working career in the field of information systems. His roles included desktop support, system management, network administration and project management. His final position was with MillerCoors Brewing Company in Irwindale where he was employed from 1996-2013.

He continued in a consulting role there through 2015. Tom and his wife Alicia have lived in Monrovia since 1988 and are both retired.

Scott McCullah entered the financial services industry in 1981 and has worked with several major Wall Street firms and California banks. The last 20 years he has worked with JP Morgan. He currently supervises more than 900 financial advisors throughout California.

He and his wife Cindi have been married for over 40 years and are planning to retire in Summerlin, NV.

Sean McCarthy is the coordinator of instructional support, professional development and induction for the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. He has been a national board certified teacher since 2000 and recently renewed this 10year certification for the second time. Sean also became a certified instructor for Mindful Schools last year. He and his wife Michelle have three children (two of which are grown) and reside in Murrieta.

Hector Ramos has spent nearly 40 years in the medical field and has recently changed his focus from caring for patients to teaching young resident doctors and medical students.

Michael Franz-George has spent most of his career in aviation maintenance and is now teaching the subject at a college in Riverside. He has spent 26 years with the Riverside Sheriff Department as a mountain rescue volunteer in SAR. He has two grown sons and is currently engaged.

Ken White retired from the Los Angeles Police Department as the detective supervisor of a homicide unit after a 27.5 year career in law enforcement. He currently works for The Walt Disney Company as a corporate security operations manager, based in Burbank. His responsibilities include protecting talent and assets on the West Coast. He is thrilled to have his son KJ ’26 attending La Salle and is looking forward to him continuing the family legacy, and starting his own.

at Walt Disney Imagineering.

He is responsible for the story development of lands, attractions, shops, restaurants, and experiences at Disney Theme Parks around the world. He is also currently working on a children’s book for Penguin Random House, which will be released in 2024. Joe recently launched his debut novel, The Unsaid Summer, a young adult coming of age love story.

Hannah (Miller) Wilder serves as a priest for the Episcopal congregation of St. Mary’s in Ramona, CA. She and her wife, Kathy, have a grown son and live in Julian.

Xochitl Bermejo has written her second poetry book, INCANTATION: LOVE POEMS FOR BATTLE SITES. A former Steinbeck Fellow and Poets & Writers California Writers Exchange winner, she’s received residencies from Hedgebrook, Ragdale, Yefe Nof, and the National Parks Arts Foundation.

Xochitl teaches poetry and creative writing with Antioch University, MFA, and UCLA Extension, and is the director of Women Who Submit.

has been promoted

to Lt. Colonel in the US Army. The promotion ceremony was held at the Von Braun Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Jake graduated from West Point and served in an armored scout company in Iraq.

Jake was awarded the Bronze Star and the Valorous Unit Award among other citations in Iraq. Jake commanded FOB Nathan Smith in Kandahar Province in Afghanistan. He is currently stationed at Red Stone Arsenal in systems acquisitions.

Jake, his wife Holly, and their sons, Michael and Asher, live in Huntsville.

Jewelyn Mims earned her Master’s in History from California State University, Los Angeles in 2022.

She started a new position at the Getty Center Museum in September working in the Getty Foundation Department, in grants programming.

Previously, Jewelyn worked as part of a planning team, and research assistant, helping Cal State LA build a sustainable food garden with native Southern California edible and medicinal plants on campus.

She was also invited to curate two photography exhibits for the history department at Cal State LA in partnership with the University Library and the Los Angeles Times, exhibiting historic photographs of the LA River and communities impacted by earthquakes spanning a period of 100 years.

The film had its world premiere at the prestigious South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) on March 11, 2023 and its international premiere at BIFFF (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival) in Belgium on April 15, 2023. The film was released in theatres across America on May 26, 2023 and was in the top 10 movies on iTunes for the first week of its digital release.

Samantha Nieto graduated from UC Irvine with a degree in sociology after playing soccer for the Anteaters. She is finishing out her NCAA eligibility at LMU while she works on her master’s. On September 14th, Sam opened her LMU scoring account with an 84th minute goal against Grand Canyon University.

Yuzefpolsky graduated Summa Cum Laude from Tufts University in May 2023 with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Entrepreneurship and she also wrapped up her final softball season, ending with a 40-6 record this year.

On January 21, 2023, the organization debuted its first workshop. The workshop was an advanced camera workshop taught by Elias Ginsberg, a Los Angeles-based director of photography, adjunct professor at USC and alumnus of the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Gracie is currently a junior at Purdue majoring in biomedical health sciences with a minor in anthropology. Alex Alvarez ran in his first 8K Cross Country meet for Division I St. Mary’s College, at the USF Invitational held at Golden Gate Park on September 1, 2023.

He finished as the 5th Gael, scoring points for the team, and 69th overall (53rd in scoring position), in a time of 26:01, helping the team to place 8th overall in the invitational.

Max McClellan ’09 and Chelsea Savolainen got engaged on April 22, 2023 after four years of dating. Max is a fire captain with the Stockton Fire Department and has been with the department for seven years. Chelsea works from home for a company that provides continuing education for the medical field. Max and Chelsea own a ranch together (McClellan Ranch), an 11.5 acre parcel in Heral, 30 minutes southeast of Sacramento. They have horses, cows, goats, pigs, chickens, and dogs. They sell farm fresh eggs and other organic products that are grown or made from materials on the ranch. The couple also breeds purebred Labrador Retrievers. Max and Chelsea are planning a May 2024 wedding.

Michelle “Chelle” Encinas ’17 and her fiancé Andrew Gallacher got engaged on July 18, 2023 in Lake Tahoe on the Eagle Rock hike at sunrise. Chelle graduated with her Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of South Dakota earlier this year and has started working for a local school district. She and Andrew are planning a 2024 wedding.

Monet Hurst-Mendoza’s play TORERA received its world premiere at the Tony Award-winning Alley Theatre in Houston, TX in May 2023.

The play was written while Monet was in residence at The Public Theater in New York as part of the 2017 Emerging Writers Group. It is being published by Concord Theatricals and will be available for purchase in 2024. TORERA follows the trials and celebrations of Elena Ramírez, a young woman who dreams of breaking boundaries to join the nearly exclusively male world of bullfighting in Yucatán, Mexico. A poignant story about becoming your truest self by proudly stepping into the ring. Monet hopes to bring this production to the Los Angeles area in the future. Monet is also a member of The Kilroys, a collective of theatre artists whose work combats sexism in American Theater. Their recent collective action, THE WEB, an interactive ecosystem spotlighting champions of women, trans, and non-binary voices in the American Theater can now be seen on their website, www.thekilroys.org. Monet was heavily involved in the recent 2023 WGA writers’ strike, the outcome of which won significant gains for all sectors of the union, resulting in higher pay for writers, minimum staffing requirements for writers’ rooms, and A.I. protections, among others. For the past four years, she has served as a writer/producer for "Law and Order: SVU" (seasons 2124). Monet is ready to staff in a new writers’ room and is excited for the new adventures that lie ahead!
