Message from the General Manager Winter/Spring 2017 What were you doing in 1947? Were you even around then? I sure wasn't! But there were some big things happening in the Livermore area that year, and we're spending the next year celebrating them! Yes, June 10, 1947 was when LARPD was created by a vote of the people. A group of prominent local supporters for a recreation district, including city and school district officials, mothers groups and nonprofits, petitioned the county to place a measure on the ballot. The vote was 552-89 in favor of forming the Livermore Area Park, Recreation and Parkway District. The county Board of Supervisors later appointed the first Board of Directors for the dependent District. In 1957, the District became independent, changed the name to the current one, and voters elected the first elected Board of Directors. In the past 70 years, LARPD has grown and changed with the community to the thriving vibrant parks and recreation agency it is today. We are indebted to the past leadership of the District, including Board members, General Managers, staff and citizen volunteers who have worked tirelessly to provide the numerous programs, parks, recreation facilities, and other services that really help to define the excellent quality of life we enjoy in the Livermore area. We continue to work successfully with our government partners and nonprofit organizations, joining hands and resources to provide excellent government services and value for the taxpayer dollar. This next year, join us as we celebrate our 70th anniversary with events and activities designed with you in mind to honor the past, celebrate the present, and explore future parks and recreation benefits for you and your family. Happy Anniversary, LARPD! You look mahvelous for your age!

Happy Holidays! Tim Barry General Manager

Little Learners (2.5 yrs by 9/1/17) Aimed at having fun, this parent participation program is designed to prepare children for future preschool experience. Through play, parents may enjoy activities with their child to develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments. An adult will participate at least two times per month and at all times until the child is able to use the restroom independently.

(4 yrs by 9/1/17)

Four-year-olds are ready to expand their independence and are becoming aware of the world around them. When engaged in thoughtful, age appropriate play, the benefits include gaining confidence for Kindergarten readiness as well as self-esteem, building relationships, problem-solving, conflict resolution, expanding language, understanding rules and limits, discovering talents, sparking creativity, inspiring thinking, defining personality, and sorting out likes and dislikes. Healthy, valuable play touches on every area of a child’s development. Parents/guardians are encouraged to participate at least one day per month. Children must be able to use the restroom independently.

Our animal show is one of the top children's shows in the Bay Area. Not only a hit with children, but any parents and other adults watching as well! Fur, Scales and Tails was created 15 years ago after a handful of animal loving 1st graders began to ask their old Kindergarten teacher to bring a few of his classroom pets back to school to see everyone. After acquiring more animals, this show was born. Each person needs a ticket.
