Message from the

General Manager FALL/WINTER 2015 This issue of Parks & Play features our wonderful pet dogs and the seven dog parks that are provided by LARPD throughout our park system. It really pays to be a mutt in this town! Our hats off to retired veterinarian Marty Plone who, in 2002, lobbied the City of Livermore and LARPD to establish our first Dog Park at Max Baer Park on Murdell Lane. After that, the “cat was out of the bag” and more and more neighborhoods wanted a space allocated in their local park for canine play and socialization. Let’s face it, it’s also socialization for their humans! The last two new parks built in Livermore, Bruno Canziani Park on Charlotte Way and Cayetano Park on Portola and Isabel both had dog parks designed and built from the very beginning. The multi-acre off-leash Dog Park at Robertson Park was established a number of years ago at the request of local citizens who saw an opportunity for a really large space for their pets to play. The Board and staff did their research and due diligence and agreed and established one of the busiest dog parks in town, and it has been wildly successful! Do you have feedback for us about our dog parks? Would you like to contribute something that would enhance your local dog park? Please let us know by emailing us at info@larpd.org. Walk your dog to your local dog park and let them go off leash. It’s invigorating for both of you! Enjoy the fall and your parks, both for you and your dog, and make some changes for the good…you’ll be glad you did!

Tim Barry General Manager

Students will be divided into small ensembles of 3 to 6 members based on age, experience and instrumentation. Call to schedule at 925-456-3460. 8 classes.

The best way to learn any musical instrument is in a one-on-one setting. Performance-focused school programs simply do not focus on the intricacies of each instrument. In our classes, students learn valuable skills (like proper technique & sight reading) at their own pace, from a professional musician on their instrument. We offer private music lessons on all school band and orchestra instruments: flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and bass. Call to schedule at 925-456-3460. 4 classes-Monthly.

“Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.” ~ Dean Koontz

Lily, a terrier-spaniel mix, and her companion Stitch, a terrierchihuahua mix, who are pictured on the front cover, enjoyed time out at LARPD’s Cayetano Park Dog Park despite the 107 degree heat in early July. Their human parents, Jessica and Eric Wenrich, brought both dogs to Cayetano Park’s grand opening in mid-February. That event marked a District milestone with the seventh off-leash dog park opened and managed by LARPD. Charlé Thibodeau noted, “Dog parks were developed to create a place where our canine companions can enjoy themselves. They offer a safe, enclosed environment where pets can run off leashes while providing an opportunity to socialize

with other dogs.” 1 In other words, dog parks are a great place for a dog to get out and be, well, a dog. LARPD dog parks are the perfect place for training, exercise, catch or frolicking. To learn more about a dog park near you, read on for a brief description of each park accompanied by what park users have to say.

Bruno Canziani Park South Charlotte Way The 49,000-square-foot fenced run is on the east side of the street, two blocks south of East Avenue. “What makes this park better than others is the lack of obstacles. It is the perfect place for dogs that are kept indoors all day or live in apartments and only have small patios to enjoy the outdoors. This park gives them the much needed opportunity to be free and expel some of their energy.” 2

Max Baer Park 1310 Murdell Lane At the southeast corner of the park between the softball fields and Mendenhall Middle School, there is a fenced dog area of approximately 28,000 square feet. “This is a very nice dog park. The dogs we've met have all been well behaved and the owners conscientious. There's plenty of shade, seating and grass.” 5

Cayetano Park Northeast corner of Portola Avenue at Isabel Avenue/Campus Hill Drive This brand-new park, opened in February 2015, features separate fenced dog parks for small and large dogs, plus a dog drinking fountain. The large dog area is 16,100 square feet and the small dog area is 7,800 square feet. “I really enjoyed this dog park! Loved that they had two areas for all sizes and small dogs.” 3 Tianna M., 3/24/15

May Nissen Park 685 Rincon Ave. This approximately 15,000 square-foot fenced dog run is located behind the library and picnic area. “The dog park is wonderful. The dogs are great friends. The owners are very nice. Everyone cares about all the dogs. It is a great place. The dogs just love it.” 6

Vista Meadows Park 2450 Westminster Way Follow the paved path up the hill from the play area and just over the crest to a nearly 39,000-square-foot fenced grassy hillside where your dog is allowed off leash. “Lots of grass, shaded areas and it is on a hill, which makes for a very tired dog in a short amount of time…It's just a great place in a nestled little park.” 8 Cheryl B., 6/10/2011

Donna S., 4/21/10 Kirk Sylvester photo

This fenced run is on the west side of Bluebell Drive, between Buckskin and Shetland Roads. This dog park features separate areas for large and small dogs. “There is a separate small and large dog area. Park was clean and medium sized. Nice overall, we’ll have to try again.” 4 Jenny C., 2/25/2012

Robertson Park Meadow 3200 Robertson Park Road This 4-acre fenced area offers two water stations. The Meadow is situated between the arroyo and the synthetic turf field. Coming soon, LARPD plans to install play structures for our furry friends. ”There is always parking and it's convenient to take a stroll along the arroyo trail before/after the dog park.” 7 Heather W., 11/29/13

Next time you go out for a walk with your dog, consider joining Lily and Stitch and their two-legged family members at one of LARPD’s dog parks. It’s a chance for both you and your dog to get a little exercise, make new friends, and simply get out and play. Sycamore Grove Park Nature Walks and Talks

A Message from the General Manager The drought, its effect on our parks, and our water distribution Fall is a great time for reflection as we go through our busy lives. The change of seasons and temperatures are welcome to our environment that has been damaged by this long-standing statewide drought. We’ve met our water reduction goals in our parks but the cost is readily seen in the condition of trees from park to park. Those varieties that can survive better in drought conditions show it, while others are in pretty bad shape. All along, we’ve been bringing in trucked and treated water from the City of Livermore Water Treatment Plant and applying it to thirsty trees. We’ve also been rigging drip irrigation systems where we can to bypass the turf irrigation systems that have been cut back so much. This, in addition to allowing more water in groves of trees, has helped us prevent high tree mortality during this drought. We’re also closely monitoring allowable water usage levels from our retail water suppliers.
