February 28th – World Rare Disease Day

World Rare Disease Day is a campaign to raise awareness of rare diseases. Since the beginning of 2008, thousands of events are organized around the world which include millions of people.

The campaign started as a European event and over time it has become a global phenomenon, with the participation of more than 90 countries around the world in 2018. For the first time in 2013, The Republic of Macedonia got involved in celebrating this rare day.

Only a small percentage of the population suffers from rare diseases. For every 2,000 people, one has a rare disease. Over 300 million people worldwide suffer from rare diseases. There are 6000 different types of rare diseases worldwide.

5% of the existing rare diseases do not have adequate therapy. The rare disease is always difficult to diagnose. The first symptoms appear immediately after birth or in the first few years. They are genetic in nature and cause severe damage.

Because not every rare disease is visible, nor is it easily recognizable, and there is a need for adaptation, on Rare Disease Day they call for action so that people living with a rare disease can have equal opportunities to realize their potential to participate in family, work and social life, because rare diseases affect not only patients but the whole family, friends, caregivers and the whole society.
