As a general matter, we will follow the USTA code. In addition, members are asked to comply with the following club rules.
• Fair play and honorable and polite behavior should be observed at all times. This applies particularly to inter-club team play where you represent the Club.
• Please enter a court from the closest available door and be considerate when walking behind courts that are in play.
• Respect LSC tennis dress code; 80% white attire and collared shirts for men and boys. Ensure that your guests adhere to this policy.
• Always give your opponent the benefit of the doubt; if you are not absolutely sure your opponent’s ball is out, presume that it is good.
• It’s your responsibility to call all balls on your side, to help make calls on the opponent’s side if asked, and to call out any of your own balls that you clearly see go out on the opponent’s side.
• In doubles, when partners disagree about a line call, the opponent’s ball must be considered good.
• If you catch or are touched by a ball that is in play, you lose the point, even if you are outside the court.
• The partner of the player who is receiving serve should call the service line. The receiver calls the center and side lines.
• To avoid arguments about the score, the server should announce the score before each service point.
• It is rude to return a service that is obviously out; it is unsportsmanlike if you know this bothers the server.
• Return all stray balls as soon as possible. Do not disrupt play on other courts while returning balls. When returning a stray ball to another player, hit it so it goes to the player on one bounce.
• Each player should provide five minutes of warm-up, hitting shots directly to his opponent. Don’t confuse warm-up with practice.
• Dress neatly when visiting another club. You cannot err if you dress in all white.
• A handshake or other friendly gesture (e.g., fist or elbow bumping) at the end of a match is a demonstration of good sportsmanship. Failure to make such a gesture at the end of a match is rude.
• Our courts need proper maintenance to sustain usage during the season. Please respect the maintenance times and the maintenance staff and exit courts in a timely manner during scheduled maintenance.
• Please leave the court as you found it – all garbage, cups, towels and balls should be removed and placed in their respective receptacles.
LSC Rules & Regulations for Tennis
RESPONSIBILITY
It is the responsibility of the tennis playing members to ensure that our tennis rules and regulations work. Occasionally each of us will require a reminder or an interpretation of these regulations and that responsibility resides with our Tennis Pro and Tennis Staff. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Overseeing all our tennis activities is the LSC Tennis Board Liaison. If you have any suggestions or questions regarding any of our LSC tennis activities, please address them to the Board Tennis Liaison at the Shore Club via either writing, via e-mail (vp1@larchmontshoreclub.org) or through the Tennis Staff.
GENERAL
• No cell phones should be used on the court.
• No game-playing, other than tennis, is allowed on the courts.
• Only 4 players are allowed on a court at a time (excluding clinics).
• Only the players who have signed up for a court may play on the court.
• Spectators (including children) are welcome outside the fence–not on the courts.
• Players should leave promptly when their reserved time has expired and when the next playing group has arrived.
• All players must observe proper tennis etiquette.
• No events (e.g., informal round robins) may take place on the courts that have not been authorized or organized by the Tennis Pro and Tennis Staff.

LSC TENNIS TOURNAMENT REGULATIONS
LSC has a long tradition of providing healthy and friendly tournament competition in a fun and sportsmanlike atmosphere. To uphold this tradition, all participants are responsible for reading and acknowledging the following tournament rules prior to entering any tournament. Any questions should be brought to the Tennis Pro and Tennis Staff before the event.
ELIGIBILITY
Subject to the qualifications listed below, tournaments are open to all Adult tennis members in good standing. In addition, the tennis fee for the competing Adult tennis member and the house account of the Club Member on which the tennis member is listed must be paid in full before that tennis member can compete in any tournament.
• “A” level events are open to all Adult tennis members. These events are designed for players who are ranked (or who would be ranked) as equal to or greater than a strong USTA 3.5 player, with most of the players being 4.0 and above.
• Subject to the qualifications listed below, a “B” level event open to all Adult tennis members who are ranked 3.5 and below.
• If you win a “B” event two consecutive years, you must move to the “A” level for that event.
• For any “B” level doubles event, both players must be “B” level players.
• Adult tennis members who are between 17 and 21 years old on or prior to August 15 of the tennis season in question should generally not play in “B” events, unless the Tennis Pro determines that they are “B” level.
• An Adult tennis member who, in the judgment of the Tennis Pro in consultation with the Board Tennis Liaison, is not a “B” level player may play in a B event after an evaluation by the Tennis Pro and it is determined that they are a B player.
• An Adult tennis member is eligible to play in only one of (i) the “A”, and “B” singles, (ii) “A” and “B” doubles, (iii) “A” and “B” mixed doubles and (iv) “A” and “B” husband & wife events.
• Husband and wife may enter the mixed doubles event as a team only if they are not entered in the husband/wife event as a team.
• The Tennis Pro may use their discretion when evaluating a player for placement in the A or B division of a tournament.
TOURNAMENT DEFAULT POLICY
• Before you sign up for any tournament, please make sure that you are going to be in town for all tournament dates, rain dates and the Labor Day weekend finals. If you cannot commit to all such dates, please do not sign up for that tournament. Prior to the start of each match, players will be asked to affirm their future availability and anyone not able to commit to all dates will be immediately defaulted. If such players default after the first round of play, their most recent opponents will move forward in the draw.
• No private scheduling arrangements will be made by the Tennis Pro and Tennis Staff. Once the draw is posted, no changes to the tournament scheduling can be made, subject to the following exception. If, following the posting of the draw, a scheduled player is unable to play a scheduled first-round match due to a family emergency or injury to that player, at the discretion of the Tennis Pro in consultation with the Board Tennis Liaison, a Tennis Member who did not sign up for the tournament may be allowed to substitute for the scheduled player.
• Players are expected to arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of each tournament match. If any player arrives more than 10 minutes late, the match will be automatically defaulted.
TOURNAMENT EVENT SIZE
All tournaments require a minimum of 8 entrants and a maximum of 64. If there are more than the maximum, a waiting list for the event will be kept by the Pro Shop. Tournaments with less than the minimum may be canceled or combined with another tournament.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
The LSC tennis tournaments are run on a firm schedule this is not casual play. All tournament matches will be played on the dates and times scheduled, although in certain tournaments players will be allowed to schedule themselves early rounds that they must play before a designated date. All play will be according to the schedule absolutely no personal scheduling arrangements will be made for any player. Rain dates are built into the schedule for the tournaments. The Tennis Pro will determine playability and will make the decision to reschedule to a rain date.
TOURNAMENT ETIQUETTE
• Be on time
• Warm Up should be no more than 5 minutes, including serves
• All bathroom breaks should be taken in between sets if needed.
• Spectators never make calls. A player must not enlist the aid of a spectator in making a call. No spectator has a part in a match.
• Player makes calls on own side of net. A player calls all shots landing on, or aimed at, the player’s side of the net.
• Ball touching any part of line is good.
• Ball that cannot be called out is good.
• Making calls on clay courts. If any part of a ball mark touches a line on a clay court, the ball must be called good. A player is not required to show an opponent the mark. The opponent shall not pass the net to inspect a mark.
TOURNAMENT SIGN UP
The sign-up deadline is according to the schedule provided by the Pro and on the website and sent to membership at the beginning of the season. Tournament sign-up is online only. When entering a tournament event, please indicate the event, your name, your partner’s name and phone numbers and e-mail addresses for both. Please also provide the best way to reach you. If you have entered a tournament event, you may not reserve court time for that day until you have finished all tournament play on that day. Remember, tournament play takes precedence over non-tournament play.
SPORTSMANSHIP POLICY
Sportsmanship is the foundation of tennis. It is essential to tennis as a welcoming, open, and inclusive sport. Sports integrity follows a boundless set of core values and attributes that enrich the lives of all who participate. These attributes include, but are not limited to:
• Understanding and following the rules
• Being fair
• Acting with character
• Respecting others
• Winning with humility and losing with grace
• Maintaining composure
• Being accountable for one’s own actions
• Giving others the benefit of the doubt
TOURNAMENT PLAY
USTA rules and The Code govern play. Stop by the Pro Shop to ask any questions you may have prior to your event.
• The entrants are responsible for balls. Each player/team will bring a new can of “soft court” balls to the scheduled match. Open one can for the match and the winner keeps the unopened can at the end of the match. It is a Club tradition that the winner buys a drink for the loser. The Pro Shop will supply balls only for the final matches.
• Regular scoring will be used for all adult tournament matches.
• The preliminary rounds are played in an 8 game pro-set format first player to reach 8 games by 2 wins. At “7 all” a 12-point tiebreaker this means first to reach 7 points by 2 wins will be played to determine the winner.
• Quarter & Semi Final matches will be the best 2 out of 3 sets with the 3rd set being a 10 point tie-breaker - this means the first to reach 10 points by 2 points wins. The Final matches will be the best 2 out of 3 full sets.
• All matches before the quarterfinals will be timed (1 hour for an 8 game pro set, including warm-up). All Quarterfinal, Semi and Final matches will be untimed.
• One player should set a phone timer for 1 hour after your scheduled match time, if the timer goes off before the match is over, the team in the lead will win the match.
• if the match is tied in games after one hour, a 5 point tiebreaker will be played, the first to reach 5 points by 2 points will be the winner
• If you are in the middle of a game and the score is tied in games, you will finish the game.
• LSC Tournament Matches will follow the LSC Tiebreak rule:
• The next person who was due to serve will start the tiebreak game and serve one point to the deuce side of the court. The following two points will then be served by the opponent starting on the ad side. In doubles the player on the opposing team due to serve will serve these points.
• Players or teams will switch ends of the court every SIX points (e.g. when the score is 4-2). The first player or team to win SEVEN points by two win the tiebreak. Whoever wins the tiebreak game wins the set by a score of 7-6.
• Serving after a tiebreak set:
o Since the set is an odd-numbered score (7-6), whichever end of the court the players or teams ended up on when the tiebreak game finished, they will need to switch sides to start the next set. Whoever started serving the tiebreak game will be receiving serve in the first game of the next set.
TOURNAMENT PLAY
• All preliminary matches will be officiated by the participants in the spirit of sportsmanship. That means the players make all line calls; close calls always go to your opponent! If assistance is needed regarding a specific ruling, you can call a member of the Tennis Staff, but do not expect him or her to officiate tournament matches. The Tennis Staff will officiate final matches. Please note that all officiating will be conducted on the court spectators are not to be enlisted as line judges or umpires.
TIMELINESS
• The players are responsible for knowing the date, time and court for the scheduled match. You are responsible for checking on your match time and for getting to the courts on time.
• If a player/team is late by more than 10 minutes from the scheduled time, the late player/team is defaulted. A doubles team must have both players present to begin play. If one team member is late, as described above, the team defaults. Time will be determined by the clock in the Pro Shop. Participants are not allowed to excuse the lateness of their competitors.
• The winner is responsible for reporting scores to the Pro Shop for recording via email to Rogerio.
Play Well. Have fun.
