AREAA Charlotte Metro Chapter Founding Board of Directors 2021n
Welcome to a celebration of the vibrant Asian American, National Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community in Greater Charlotte! Like a kaleidoscope creating mesmerizing patterns with each turn, our region's 32 diverse Asian cultures form a brilliant tapestry of traditions, innovations, and contributions. In just a decade, Charlotte's Asian population has more than doubled, now comprising 6.3% of our city. This dynamic community enriches Charlotte through entrepreneurship, and leadership across healthcare, technology, education, and the arts. Tonight, we honor these contributions while experiencing cultural performances, cuisine, and art that reflect the richness of our AAPI community. As you enjoy this evening's celebration, we invite you to discover the many facets of Asian heritage that continue to transform and beautify our beloved Charlotte.
The Greater Charlotte region growth in its AAPI community over the past decade, outpaces both national and state growth in the same period. Population increases exceed 80% in some areas since 2010. This vibrant mosaic is led by Indian Americans (32%), Chinese Americans (18%), Vietnamese Americans (12%), Filipino Americans (10%), and Korean Americans (8%), while newer groups show remarkable expansion rates, including Nepalese (215% increase since 2010), Bangladeshi (175%), and Burmese (140%) populations. AAPI residents have established significant presence in the University Area (11.2%), Ballantyne (9.8%), Matthews (8.5%), and Huntersville (7.2%).
Their economic impact is substantial, with over 6,800 AAPI-owned businesses contributing approximately $3.2 billion annually to the local economy and employing more than 25,000 people. This highly educated community—with 68% holding college degrees and 32% possessing graduate degrees—enhances Charlotte's cultural landscape through numerous festivals, culinary innovations, and artistic contributions. Community events that now dot the calendar, include Lunar New Year celebrations, the Charlotte Asian Festival, and numerous cultural showcases.
From technology professionals strengthening the financial sector to healthcare providers, educators, and entrepreneurs, the AAPI community has become an integral part of Charlotte's growing reputation as a diverse, dynamic, and internationally connected metropolitan region. Each culture contributes distinctive elements to the region's evolving identity—from the innovative tech professionals enhancing Charlotte's business landscape to entrepreneurs establishing authentic eateries along Central Avenue and in suburbs like Matthews and Pineville. Religious institutions spanning Hindu temples to Buddhist centers have become architectural landmarks, while AAPI involvement in civic engagement, healthcare, education, and the arts has fundamentally enriched Charlotte's social fabric, transforming the region into an increasingly diverse and interconnected metropolitan area.

AREAA is dedicated to promoting sustainable homeownership opportunities in Asian American communities by creating a powerful national voice for housing and real estate professionals that serve this dynamic market.
Story
Founded in 2003, the Asian American Real Estate Association of America (AREAA) is a 19,000 member strong, national nonprofit trade organization dedicated to improving the lives of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community through homeownership. Founded in 2021, Charlotte is one of the newer of AREAA’s 45 Chapters across the country.
AREAA successfully persuaded the US Census Bureau to track and include Asian housing data as a standalone category in its quarterly reports on homeownership by race and ethnicity.
AREAA collaborated with the GSEs to create translated resources in Chinese for LEP borrowers. Korean, Vietnamese, and Tagalog are set to launch this year.
AREAA helped change underwriting standards to more fairly account for student loans that were in deferment when calculating a borrower’s debt-to-income ratio
As I step into the role of President for 2025, I am both honored and excited to share my vision for our chapter's future. Our theme for this year is "Growth Through Community and Unity" – a philosophy that recognizes the tremendous potential we can unlock when we come together as real estate professionals and members of the AANHPI (Asian American National Hawaiian Pacific Islander) community.
In today's dynamic real estate landscape, our strength lies in our ability to support and elevate one another.
By fostering connection, prioritizing education, and embracing innovation, we can create unprecedented opportunities for growth
both individually and collectively.
I am committed to advancing three key initiatives that will shape our chapter's direction this year:
First, we will focus on expanding our chapter's reach and impact. A larger, more diverse membership will bring fresh perspectives, expanded networks, and enhanced opportunities for collaboration. This growth will strengthen our voice in the Charlotte metro area and amplify our ability to serve our community effectively.
Second, we will deepen our connections within the AANHPI community and establish ourselves as the premier resource for homeownership. By building meaningful relationships and sharing our expertise, we can help more families achieve their dreams of homeownership while strengthening the economic foundation of our community.
Finally, we will invest in developing tomorrow's AANHPI community leaders. By creating more opportunities for involvement and leadership development, we will ensure the continued vitality and success of our chapter for years to come. Every member has valuable insights to contribute, and I am committed to fostering an environment where new leaders can emerge and thrive.
To achieve these goals, we will:
- Create more opportunities for meaningful relationship-building among members
- Deliver high-quality educational programming that enhances our professional capabilities
- Launch a significant community service project specifically benefiting the AANHPI community
Your active participation and engagement will be crucial to our success. Together, we can create a more vibrant, connected, and prosperous real estate community that serves as a model for other AREAA chapters across the country.
I look forward to working alongside each of you as we embark on this exciting journey of growth through community and unity.
Truist's annual support of the AREAA CLT-Metro Installation Gala exemplifies the meaningful partnerships our chapter cultivates with community allies. AREAA Charlotte Metro extends sincere gratitude to Truist for their steadfast commitment to both our organization and the broader AANHPI Community. From providing mortgages for new construction to guiding first-time buyers, refinancing homes, or facilitating HELOCs, Truist stands ready for life's significant milestones. We deeply appreciate Truist for being present during AREAA Charlotte Metro's milestone moments as well.
