The overall aim of this one-year programme is to introduce the learner to the areas of software, database and web development. It is aimed at learners of Leaving Certificate standard and leads to a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Software Development.

Why should I apply for this course? This course serves as an excellent springboard to a qualification and a career in the IT sector. Learners will gain a recognised professional qualification, and practical training in software development, software testing, web design, mobile technologies and database design. This Level 5 course gives learners an excellent grounding in computer programming.

The ICT sector is booming at the moment. As a result, there is a shortage of Computer Science graduates in Ireland. Because of the broad practical nature of the course, it is often used as a gap year course to hone learners’ IT and academic writing skills.

What will I study? The Computer Science Course consists of the following modules*: • Computer Programming • Mathematics • Software Architecture • Teamworking • Programming Design Principles • Teamworking • Work Experience • Database Methods • Web Authoring * Modules subject to change

Progression Options Learners may use the course to enter any College via Further Education reserved places in an IT or University or acquire up to 400 CAO points. Entry Requirements Applicants should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.

All applicants are required to complete an assessment in literacy and numeracy, and an interview before commencing a course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English and Numeracy to complete a Level 5 course.
