The purpose of this course is to provide the learner with knowledge, skills and competence required for the holistic care, wellbeing, safety and health of babies, toddlers and young children in the Early Learning and Care setting, through a balance of theory and hands on practical skills.
Learners will be given an opportunity to complete the following short courses during the academic year: • Patient Manual Handling • First Aid Responder (QQI Level 5
Module)

Learners will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and competence to work in a professional capacity, to understand the role of an Early Learning and Care professional and the importance of Personal and Professional Development. The learner will learn how to engage in Professional Development Planning, Research skills, Academic Writing skills, Digital skills and Interview skills. Throughout the course, learners will also work under supervision demonstrating the required competence, values and work practices to build reciprocal, responsive and respectful working relationships with all stakeholders in the best interest of babies, toddlers and young children. Graduates of this course will receive an internationally recognised qualification and will experience high-level skills training from a highly-experienced Early Years team. On successful completion of the Certificate in Early Learning and Care (Year 1) course, learners have the opportunity to progress within Portlaoise Institute to study on the QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Early Learning and Care (Year 2).

Entry Requirements Applicants should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.
All applicants are required to complete an assessment and interview before commencing a Further Education course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English to complete a Level 5 course.
English language - Minimum English language and literacy competence for speakers of English as a second language is Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, B2 in writing, reading, listening and speaking. Evidence of achievement of this standard is necessary for entry to the programme.
