The one-year pre-Engineering course aims to equip learners with the necessary practical and theoretical skills needed for employment in the engineering industry or as a foundation for learners who wish to pursue further studies in electronic or mechanical engineering in a Third Level Institution.

Why should I apply for this course? This course enables the learner to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence in the area of Engineering. These skills would form the basis of any course in engineering which learners might later pursue at a third level institution or on an apprenticeship. Practical workshop sessions form an integral part of the course.

Upon successful completion of this pre-entry course, the learner will be able to progress to Diploma and Degree courses in third level colleges

Progression Options Graduates of this course may enter third level education via Further Education reserved places in an IT or University or acquire up to 400 CAO points.

Here are examples of courses students can progress to on successful course completion: Entry Requirements Applicants should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.

All applicants are required to complete an assessment before commencing a course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English and Maths.
