DJ/Producer Matthew Dear has forged some of the darkest, most textural electronic ambient music in recent memory. With his latest, “Black City,” he doesn’t deviate far from the shadowy corners and claustrophobic nights of previous releases, but the introduction of a focus on vocal tracks adds an additional layer to his uneasy puzzle, and “Black City” is the result. As “City” unfurls, the disorienting (but agreeable) blending of Japan’s synthhaunts and TV on the Radio’s vocal style and insistent soul-disco come into focus. For those familiar, “City” is unmistakably Dear’s work, but some atmosphere is sacrificed in the name of more propulsive, groove-based tracks like “Soil to Seed.” “City” is Dear’s most dancefloor-ready album to date, without pandering to the club kids and, along with Gonjasufi, has released one of the most askew, headphone-rewarding electronic records of the year.

Lansing-based filmmaker Michael McCallum is a movie actor, director, producer writer, and everything inbetween. Along with a group of fellow film experts from midMichigan, including his father William C. McCallum, A.E. Griffin, Shane Hagedorn, Marianne J. Bacon and Jonathan Worful, McCallum has released several feature films that have earned national filmmaking awards. McCallum’s “Fairview St.” will play at this year’s East Lansing Film Festival as part of the Lake Michigan Film Competition at 1 p.m. Saturday. The film has been accepted to 19 film festivals nationally, played in 12 different states and won eight major awards to boot. Why has it done so well nationally? “I think it’s been so well-received because it’s an honest story,” McCallum says. “It’s not a ‘Hollywood’ film. It doesn’t have an ending that most test audiences would vote for. It’s real life, and we relate to the characters in it. We root for them.” McCallum is all about keeping his films local, and he uses local venues for settings. He shot scenes for “Fairview St.” at Rubie’s Paradise Salon, Falsetta’s Casa Nova, Potter Park Zoo and the North Precinct Police Department. Sunday, McCallum’s talents move over to Grand Rapids, where his crime drama thriller, “Shadowpuppet,” debuts Sunday, Oct. 24 at “Thriller! Chiller!” Film Festival. • Michael McCallum’s “Fairview St.” at the East Lansing Film Festival • Synopsis: “Paroled after serving four years in prison for armed robbery, James Winton returns home to his wife and father to make amends. However, when James is implicated in the recent murders of old acquaintances, the police detective who put him away last time is determined to make him pay at any cost.” • 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 • 109 Kedzie, on MSU’s campus • $8 general admission; $6 student and senior (60+) • Also: McCallum’s “Shadowpuppet,” a crime drama thriller, premieres at “Thriller! Chiller!” Film Festival, 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, The Wealthy Theatre, Grand Rapids. Individual movie tickets $5 each, available at the Wealthy Theatre box office during the festival.

Hosting is Public Offenders, an alliance of local stand-up comedians. “We wanted to take the concept of the stand-up comedy show to the next level,” says Tom Slovinski, founding member of Public Offenders and one of the night’s comedians. “People are used to the whole comedian-emcee-comedian routine, which can get boring. This is an interactive experience featuring live music and a screen showing locally produced viral videos. It’s really going to change the minds of people who have preconceived notions of what a comedy show can be.” Other entertainment includes local hotshot comedians Denny Green, Trevor Smith and Dan Currie, live music from Lansing-based alt-rock band Billiards Music and a screening of short comedy films before they hit YouTube. • “Mac’s to the Future,” live comedy and music mixed with digital shorts, featuring comedy troupe Public Offenders • 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25 • Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Dane Vermeulen’s childhood was atypical ... to put it lightly. After all, his dad, Tesco Vee, fronted The Meatmen, a hugely popular American punk band of the ’80s and ’90s with a reputation for bizarre stage antics and spoofs of hardcore punk shows. “It was very different from the average family life,” Vermeulen says. “Dad would go on tour for a month at a time, and I thought that was normal for every family up to about age 8 or 9.” Eventually, he caught on that most kids don’t have dads who dress up in fur jumpsuits and stomp around onstage every night. Kidding aside, the experience shaped him and turned him onto the wonders of old fashioned, quality rock ‘n’ roll. Now, Vermeulen is starting to book shows under the moniker Divide and Conquer Booking, and his first happens Friday at The Loft in Lansing featuring — who else? — his dad and The

out of Detroit. Easy Action is John Brannon of Negative Approach’s side project and “a must-see for anyone that hasn’t already.” The Meatmen is booked for obvious reasons: “They are the greatest group of showmen in punk rock music today.” Vermeulen feels the energy, as his first show nears. “I’m looking forward to seeing all these bands together … and I’m hoping that the variety of all the bands nets them fans that wouldn’t normally be going to see them alone,” he says. “I plan on doing whatever I can to make a positive impact on the music industry on a large or small scale. I just want to help good groups get good shows.”

Growing up, Vermeulen says his dad inspired him to get involved with music. “I was raised in and around the music, it shaped the person I am. My parents were always very loving and supportive, and especially helped me focus my energy into creative outlets.” Thanks to his folks, he was exposed to myriad musical influences at a young age. “My first cassette tape was a Jimi Hendrix album. I don’t think many 6-yearold kids listened to Hendrix,” he laughs. “I never liked much mainstream music, and I think that’s because my parents played so much stuff that would never have been on the radio. “I learned that good music should be something that speaks to you, not just whatever the masses are listening to at that time.” Friday’s lineup is made of bands dear to Vermeulen. Occasus is made up of guys from DeWitt High School, where he attended. Lansing metalcore band Know Lyfe is one of the primary bands he’s booking at the moment. Hellmouth is Vermeulen’s new favorite band coming

One of those characters-allinterrelated films that were all the rage a few years ago (“Love Actually,” “Crash,” etc.), “Happy Endings” drops you into the tumultuous lives of eight or so people, all struggling with dishonesty and dysfunctional relationships. A woman struggles with whether to reach out to the son she gave up for adoption 20 years ago. A sexually confused drummer and his father deal with the manipulative, seductive singer of the band. A gay couple confront their lesbian couple friends over the possible father of the women’s child. It is full of seemingly disparate lives and stories that find themselves intertwined in unsurprising ways. With its sidebar text narration, “Endings” threatens to veer into the overly quaint, but a lack of sentimentality, solid performances and realistic characters keep it watchable. But the true take-away is that, even with Maggie Gyllenhaal’s flat voice, the melodic power of Billy Joel perseveres.

VOTE DEMOCRAT! Q&A with Kathleen Megill, President of the Cooley Democrats at Cooley Law School in Lansing: • What inspired her to get involved in politics: “When I was growing up, Rock the Vote was a big thing, so a lot musicians that I liked were doing that and I guess that got me to start (thinking) politically. When I registered to vote I really started to think about what party I wanted to align myself with. My parents are Republican but I’m a Democrat. My parents were cool with it. (They said) you have to vote your conscience.” • Issues most important to her: “I am definitely for women’s rights, the environment, civil rights, minority rights. Any time somebody is undermined, that bugs me. Any group I think that needs help, I’m definitely interested in bringing some kind of attention to it.” • If she could change one thing about the political process, it would be: “I think that there is too much apathy. Politics is involved in absolutely everything from the cup of coffee that you’re drinking to the taxes that we pay to everything. I think people need to look at the bigger picture. It is a big deal. You can’t complain if you don’t vote.”

Q&A with Andrew Walker, chairman of the Michigan State University College Republicans: • What inspired him to get involved in politics: “You hear from a lot of conservatives Ronald Reagan and he’s definitely one of the greatest presidents in American history. I’ve really learned, especially throughout my college career, to shape and develop my political ideologies. Just looking to leaders like Reagan for instance, I’m able to identify with his ideas. They help me understand why I’m going into what I’m going into and why I think what I think.” • Issues most important to him: “In Michigan right now it’s jobs and the economy. We have one of the worst business climates in the country. We can try to attract large corporations, but you’re only going to get a few of those and that’s a really hard process. But really I think getting our innovators going (to) turn it around so that we have a business friendly economy and businesses will start coming back here. If you improve jobs and the economy, that will improve all other aspects of government. When we have a bigger tax base, we’re able to do more things in government.” • If he could change one thing about the political process, it would be: “I’d like to see more citizen involvement. Our voter turnouts are low in most elections. Presidential elections bring out the most people, but even those are still low compared to the number of (potential) voters. Politics and government affects everything. I’d like to see people vote more and also get engaged and be aware of what laws affect them so they can hold representatives (accountable).”

WHAT IS FOURSQUARE?

Savvy social media users find a fun way to promote local businesses

• Foursquare is a mobile application people use to find friends, and it also serves as a city guide. Foursquare lets users “check in” to a place when they’re there, tell friends where they are and track the history of where they’ve been and who they’ve been there with.

WHAT IS A MAYOR? • A mayor in Foursquare is the user with the most number of days with check-ins at a specific place within the past 60 days. Only one check-in per day counts toward your mayorship tally. If you have a lot of check-ins that seem fake or consistently far away from where you are checking in, these check-ins will not count toward the mayorship total. Lots of businesses are now offering specials for the mayor of venues, so be sure to keep a look out for specials nearby when you’re looking at the places tab in the app. — Source: Foursquare.com

Julie Powers is the mayor of Lansing City Hall. Perhaps that needs clarification. Powers, 39, is the mayor of City Hall on Foursquare. “(If I was really mayor) I would get on the stick and become the mayor of city hall, because I currently hold the title,” Powers joked. “I would encourage Mayor Bernero to take it over, and I’ve told him so on Twitter. Every time I check in there, I’m still the mayor.” The East Lansing resident and selfproclaimed social media addict attends city council meetings regularly, and checks into City Hall on Foursquare whenever she goes. Foursquare is a mobile application that allows users to check-in when they visit places, see which of their friends are nearby and read tips left about favorite menu items or specials. Powers runs a consulting business that aids non-profits with fundraising. Part of her job involves teaching clients how to use social media. Last week, that meant teaching a group of nuns how to Tweet. “I think it helps that I’m slightly older than the average user,” Powers said. “People think this is something you do when you’re 22, and I’m not.” Powers is mayor of about 30 other locations around Lansing. The most contested are Great Lakes Coffee and Chocolate Co., Lansing City Market and Cravings Popcorn. The most cherished, however is her mayorship of the East Lansing Public Library. “It’s more about bragging rights than anything else,” Powers said. “I

After a photo shoot for NOISE, Julie Powers plays with 14-month old Evan Pratt of East Lansing outside the Impression 5 Science Center. Powers is “mayor” of Impression 5 on the social media website Foursquare. live in East Lansing and I’m kind of a book freak so of course I’m the mayor of East Lansing library.” Foursquare appeals to people who are competitive, making nights out or running errands part of a game where points and badges are up for grabs. Most of Chris Harper’s battles for mayorships are against his girlfriend, and he admits she wins quite often. “It’s not always top of mind to get out your phone,” Harper said. “(I’m thinking) about what I want to eat. Depending on my hunger, that might come first.” At last check, he could still claim

nine mayorships, with El Azteco, Emil’s and P.F. Chang’s China Bistro. Harper, 25, of East Lansing works for Michigan State University’s University Relations department. Keeping up with social media tools is part of his job. “It’s a two-way conversation now,” Harper said about social media’s impact on businesses. “It’s free information (about your customer’s habits).” Local businesses are jumping on the bandwagon, offering discounts and sometimes free food or drinks to customers who check in on Foursquare.

In the Lansing area, Foursquare users can find check-in deals for free appetizers, brownies and coffee or discounts on their total bill. Some offer a treat for any check-in, others pamper just their mayors. Devon Glass, 31, of East Lansing uses Foursquare to connect with friends. “If I see they’re at the Riv, I’ll shoot them a text message and say, ‘Who all is there? Are you guys going to be there for a bit?’” Glass said. “It’s pretty helpful at times, like during football games when everyone is out and about.” Glass is mayor of 11 places, including a circuit court and Lou & Harry’s Grill & Bakery. The most contested mayorship he vies for is Crunchy’s in East Lansing. “I have it set to notify me if somebody takes a mayorship that I have, and because of my phone I get the emails immediately,” Glass said. Powers admits that much of the information people post to social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare is silly. “I mean really does it matter that I checked in at the library this morning after my meeting? No,” Powers said. But she thinks there’s value in posting, Tweeting and checking in when it involves something she cares about, whether it’s a sports team, charity or candidate. “It’s patronizing the businesses that you care about,” Powers said. “It’s a big part of the whole ‘Love Lansing’ psyche. I think that’s sort of part of the whole mentality that’s catching here in town. “If you like something and you’re proud of it, you sing it.”

Lansing-based Christian rap artist Jerome Vierling releases his new project, “Second Coming,” Saturday at Spyn Student Events Center in Lansing. As Vierling describes it, this is much more than simply a listening experience: It entails a hip-hop show with heart, soul and a real message, backed by a full band. Everyone who attends the release receives a free CD. The show also is the kick-off of a new growth resource for students called, “Get Rooted,” which focuses on getting kids plugged into serving their communities. Vierling’s label, Soundsgood Entertainment, is now nonprofit. “After years of planning, developing and purifying motives, Soundsgood has readjusted its game plan and is now a nonprofit organization that focuses on impacting today’s teens with music and growth resources,” he says. “The evidence is startling and the statistics are overwhelming with today’s teens in America. ... Teens report being more influenced by media than school and church today. These are tomorrow’s leaders and they must be reached for Christ. The need is great and Soundsgood is doing something about it.” • Christian rapper Jerome Vierling releases, “Second Coming” • 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 • Spyn Event Center, 202 S. BY R I C H A R D K A DR E Y (EOS)

I tend not to read much urban fantasy — magical or supernatural stories set in the city landscape — but the premise of the first novel in this Snickers-type satisfying series won me over. 11 years as a gladiator-type monster-assassin in Hell has turned James Stark, aka Sandman Slim, into an understandably pissed-off, highly dangerous, extremely snarky killer whose scarred skin serves as magical armor. He’s bested the demons in Hell, and now he’s back in Los Angeles to wreak revenge on the magicians who sent him to Hell and murdered the love of his life, and nothing will get in his way for long. The charm of the series (pun intended) lies in its dark, wry humor, imaginative characters and entertaining twists on established supernatural themes. Fans of Jim Butcher, Kelley Armstrong and even William Burroughs will get a kick out of “Sandman Slim” and its sequel “Kill the Dead.” It’s a series that deserves to be at the forefront of the genre.

Bob Dylan and his band at MSU With almost 50 years as a songwriter, Bob Dylan makes the other players seem like novices in terms of songcraft. He’s the all-American meatand-potatoes song man, blending folk roots, beat poetry, blues rhythms and his own brand of punk rage in a style that’s all his own. Growing up in Minnesota, Dylan looked to blues-rock hotshots Elvis and James Dean before heading off to New York to make a name. His self-titled, debut album displayed his spontaneous vocal style and natural talent, with stories that gripped the listener and touched so many topics, from romance to politics to introspection. Chris Dorman CD release Vermont-based singer-songwriter Chris Dorman brings songs from his just-released full-length, “Sita,” to (SCENE) Metrospace on Saturday. The indie folk disc is out from Earthwork Music, a Michigan-based music collective, and Dorman has been touring the state with this release, from Traverse City to Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo. Michigan artists Seth Bernard, (Daisy) May Erlewine, Michael Shimmin, Steve Leaf and Darlene contributed their musical and production talents to the album. On Saturday, he performs with a full band including Chris Hamilton (Bass), Mike Shimmin (drums) and Steve Leaf (electric guitar, banjo). “Michigan holds something very special in its music scene: the spirit of collaboration,” Dorman said. “I have met hundreds of musicians, engineers and artists in Michigan and no one is giving up, no one is disheartened, it is a strong and beautiful force working together to create and share some killer tunes, and it is only going to get better.” “For all this, Michigan will always be my home no matter how far I roam,” Dorman said. • Chris Dorman, Gifts or Creatures, Red Tail Ring • Doors 7 p.m.; show 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 • (SCENE) Metrospace, 410 Abbot Rd. THE SCENE We visited recently during the lunch hour rush. While the place wasn’t packed, there definitely was a buzz in the air. The decor is up there with the other fancier downtown restaurants, and the waterfall is a nice, soothing touch. It was fairly warm out, so we had our meal outside under the sun. A trash can was set outside, which was nice, so we didn’t have to go back in when we were finished.

THE FOOD Pizza by the slice, or whole pies, salads, calzone and garlic knots are available.

The spinach and tomato pizza is tantalizing at Geno’s Pizzeria. There are daily specials (salad, two garlic knots, fountain pop, $8) and a different nightly special available after 2 p.m. (calzone, garlic knot, fountain pop, $6). Melissa and I had what we thought was the best value — a slice of pizza and a salad for $7 (otherwise, pizza by the slice is $3; most salads are $5.50). I chose the spinach slice and the Antipasto salad, and Melissa had the barbecue chicken pizza and the Caprese salad. We were pleased at the

big portion of salad, which is prepackaged, but looked and tasted fresh. The Antipasto salad consisted of romaine hearts, ham, pepperoni, salami, shredded mozzarella, black olives and tomatoes. The Caprese salad had romaine hearts, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella chunks, basil and olive oil. While the pizza is set out on the counter throughout the day, it does get heated up pretty warmly, and the crust is thin and crispy. The barbecue slice was a flavorful mix of sauce, chick-

INGREDIENTS (per hot dog) • 1 all-beef hot dog (get kosher dogs if you want to be really authentic) • 1 poppyseed hot dog bun • 1 tsp yellow mustard • 1 tsp sweet green pickle relish • 1 tsp chopped onion • 4 fresh tomato wedges • 1 dill pickle spear • 2 sport peppers (whole, not sliced) — they’re also labeled hot peppers • 1 dash celery salt DIRECTIONS • Bring a pot of water to a boil. Reduce heat to low, place hot dog in water, and cook for about 5 minutes. Remove hot dog and set aside. Place a steamer basket into the pot and steam buns for about 2 minutes. • Place hot dog in the bun and add the toppings. Place the pickle between the hot dog and the bottom of the bun. THE POST

E. Lansing hotspot has identity crisis I get very excited when a bar invents its own drink and names it after itself. This is not only delightful in that it shows a little creativity and initiative on behalf of the bar, but also because I like to imagine that each bar’s special drink can be viewed as a metaphor to better understand the bar itself. Take the “Postini” of East Lansing’s The Post Bar. When it arrives, you are stunned. It’s beautiful! The martini glass before you is piled with fruit and ice. It’s every bit as tidy and lovely as the small Ann Street bar itself. Though the space is limited inside, the intensely modern décor gives it a very open, fresh feel. The walls are covered in murals and mirrors (not beer mirrors), and this all serves to make one feel quite special for being fancy enough to be there ... like the drink makes one feel quite fancy for having ordered it. It is enough to dial up your old palss Samantha and Charlotte. But drinking it is another thing entirely. I wondered when our waitress asked us upon ordering if we really wanted “just” the Postini, or if we wanted it with a splash of Sprite or something to “lighten it up.” Do they always recommend doctoring up their own drink to first timers? I went without the soda spritz, but understood the offer when I realized that my blackberries and ice were accompanied only by straight Stoli vodka, and

that the berries themselves weren’t so much soaked in the liquor as pickled in it. So how does this relate to The Post Bar itself? VANDEN BOSCH Q: “Why does that scary bald guy, who plays for the Lions, have red eyes?” -Melissa B. A: That’s defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch you’re referencing, and after some dubious Googling, the answer is pretty mundane. Vanden Bosch wears specialty Nike contact lenses designed to block glare and sunlight — kind of on-retina sunglasses in the form of a rubbery disc. They’re red to block UV rays ... but Vanden Bosch has openly admitted that the sheer intimidation factor is at least part of the reason he chooses to sport the red eyes.

“I’ve heard rumblings about ‘national championship’ hopes and dreams ... I can’t hop on board that rickety bandwagon just yet.” Q: “Are you a big baseball fan?” -David M. A: Interesting and vague. I like it. I AM a big baseball fan, but even bigger when either of ‘my teams’ makes it to the postseason. Sans Tigers or Cubs, my investment in October baseball decreases greatly. That said, so long as the Yankees are playing, I’ll watch simply to cheer on their opponent. Don’t act surprised that I’m a Bronx-hater. Q: “How many games will MSU win this season?” -Every sports talk radio show with listeners in ‘The 517’ A: I’m telling you: Speculate until you’re blue in the face. I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid. That is not to say that the magic 12 number doesn’t dance in my head like everyone else ... I’m just not ready to entertain notions of grandeur about a season that is just barely half over. Talk of a BCS Bowl bid is warranted, and I’m sincerely hoping for a rosy January 1 in East Lansing. In fact, I can’t think of a better way to recover from ringing in 2011 than watching the Spartans in a New Year’s Day bowl game in Pasadena. I’ve heard rumblings about “national championship” hopes and dreams, and for some reason I can’t hop on board that rickety bandwagon just yet. October 31 will be the day I decide on that one.
