Dale Powell and the rest of the “Guys and Dolls” cast put on a show at the City Market.

Now on Thursdays MAY. 12 – MAY. 18

Our pop culture experts tell us what’s on their radar

The cast of a local community theater production hedged its bet last weekend that surprising shoppers with a good old-fashioned sing-along would help them sell tickets. The cast of the Holt & Dimondale Community Players’ upcoming “Guys and Dolls” production assembled Saturday afternoon at the Lansing City Market. They milled through the produce stands and browsed display cases. Their cue was a message on the PA system that mentioned some lost keys. Dale Powell, who plays Nicely Nicely in the classic musical, then burst into his character’s signature song “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” At first it was just Powell

performing before a piano player joined in, and soon the whole cast was singing and dancing in the middle of the market. Most of the shoppers’ surprised faces quickly turned into grins as they joined in with toe tapping and head nodding. “I was really happy that Lansing is doing fun things for the community,” shopper Carla Brooks said after being surprised by the musical performance. The cast performed three songs and handed out fliers after the initial surprise. They hope the exposure will draw audience members to their performances this weekend.

(108 minutes, Rated R)

Though underseen and undervalued, “Blow Out,” Brian De Palma’s (Scarface) 1981 take on Michaelangelo Antonioni’s mod classic “Blow-Up” is the director’s work that holds up best under scrutiny, and stands as his finest film. John Travolta is Jack, a sound engineer struggling with some film effects. While recording new samples, he unwittingly records the vehicular death of a prominent politician. His tape reveals that the death may not have been accidental, and before long Jack finds himself in the crosshairs of the deadly and mysterious Burke (John Lithgow). A thriller steeped in De Palma’s unique blend of dazzling edits and intense setpieces, “Blow Out” is one of Travolta’s finest performances, perfectly balancing nuances of a desperate, obsessive man. The Criterion edition is visually flawless and comes with an interview with the director and De Palma’s first feature, “Murder a la Mod.”

‘Divergent’

BY V E RO N I CA ROTH (KATHERINE TEGEN BOOKS)

Now that “Twilight” fever has essentially passed (at least in the book world) and the “Hunger Games” trilogy has taken over the young adult book world, literary focus has moved from vampires to the more cynical futuristic fare of Dystopian fiction. Take 1984 or Brave New World, throw in a lot more action sequences and a love triangle and you generally have picture. (A number of notable examples are “Matched” by Allie Condie, “The Inferior” by Peadar O’Guilin, and “Wither” by Lauren DeStefano.) But the one that’s currently topping my list is the highly anticipated, recently released “Divergent.” Set in a decrepit future Chicago, society has divided itself into five factions based on the particular virtue that group considers to be the most important. Beatrice Prior has reached the age where she must test to see which faction best suits her, and then make the choice that could separate her from her family forever. The initiation that follows carries much of the story, but it’s the grander political machinations of the society at large that left me dying for the next installment.

Summer’s regional music fests include favorites, newbies

F

From Woodstock to Lollapalooza, the summer music festival is a staple of American pop culture. Days and nights of live music under a scorching summer sun is the perfect setting to bond with friends, make new ones, share lifelong memories and, of course, rock out. Anne “One of the things I most enjoyed about Rothbury the Erickson last two years was the electronic music scene once the NOISE sun went down,” said Dave Bisson of Grand Rapids, who is heading to the new Electric Forest Festival from June 30-July 3 in Rothbury, Mich. “With this year’s Electric Forest lineup featuring Tiesto, Bassnectar and Pretty Lights, I know I’ll be in for an amazing four days.” “I have wanted to see A Perfect Circle forever, so I’m really excited they’re back,” Brittney Spacer of East Lansing said. She’s seeing them at Rock on the Range later this month in Columbus, Ohio, and possibly at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Whether you’re a fan of modern rock, jam-band fare or folk, there’s a summer fest to satisfy your musical craving. The same is true for your budget and how far you want to travel. Say you want to stick around Lansing. The 12th annual Common Ground Music Festival happens July 11-17. Other local, music-centered fests include Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, Festival of the Sun/Moon and the Old Town JazzFest. But now, we’re focused on the road tripworthy: fests that might cost a fortune in gas money, but are worth it for the sake of rock ‘n’ roll. There’s Lollapalooza (Chicago), Rock on the Range (Columbus, Ohio), Bonnaroo (Manchester, Tenn.) plus two brand-new fests this year: the Electric Forest Festival (Rothbury) and the Dave Matthews Caravan (Chicago).

Deluxe Inn graffiti project FILE PHOTO

R EO TOWN

Deluxe Graffiti REO-vised Local graffiti artists got a chance to use the old Deluxe Inn as a canvas as part of a public art project last year, but the art was temporary. Now artists will create new permanent pieces for REO Town during the Deluxe Graffiti REO-vised event Monday. Artists will paint on 3-D wood and recycled metal sculptures by Lansing artist Tom Sheerin. “The materials used go hand in hand with REO Town,” Sheerin said about the recycled art. “It has a rich history in industry and by recycling and reusing materials it is acknowledging that history.” The art installation will take place throughout the day Monday outside Art Alley, with a reception featuring live music and graffiti demonstrations at 7 p.m. The graffiti art installation is part of a weeklong celebration of hip-hop in Lansing, which includes a teen summit, fashion show, documentary screening, DJ showcase and more. Weeknight events are free — and open to the public — and lead up to the main event, the Lansing Hip Hop Summit on May 21. The Summit will feature performances by P.H.I.L.T.H.Y, Big Perm, Mizz Reality and more. This is the second annual Lansing Hip Hop Appreciation week organized in conjunction with 365-50.com, a site dedicated to celebrating the life and work of Malcolm X. The graffiti sculptures will be placed along Washington Avenue in REO Town. The event is sponsored by REACH Studio Art Center and the REO Town Commercial Association with the support of the City of Lansing Arts & Cultural Grant Program. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart B E LON G

(Slumberland)

The rare lo-fi band that had the melodic and songwriting gifts to ascend beyond the willful production trappings, their sophomore album “Belong” has The Pains shrugging off any preconceived notions about what their “sound” is, and in the process deliver one of the best albums of the year. Leveraging every drop of clout to wrangle the juggernaut production duo of Flood and Alan Moulder (U2, Nine Inch Nails), The Pains craft a shimmering, jangly wall of sound that immediately brings to mind the heyday of ‘90s alt rock. Try and listen to the title track, with its distorted, chiming guitars, and not expect Billy Corgan’s magnificent whine to break in at any moment. A towering achievement of noisily tuneful guitar rock, “Belong” had me scrambling for “Siamese Dream” for an impromptu cage match. And while it doesn’t scale those heights, it is one of the strongest guitar records this year.

The body was solid with a nice mouthfeel, and there was a pleasant, prickly bitterness throughout that ended dry and clean without any lingering harshness. That, my friends, is a beer to enjoy as the weather warms. To find the closest availability of Magic Hat beers to you, check out the company’s locator at www.magichat.net/sipcode. beer should look like that when poured. How many times have readers poured a beer where the head exhausts itself in moments, leaving behind the lonely liquid? At a tavern, this may be because of the glasscleaning sanitizers they use, but many times it’s just because of poor brewing techniques — wimpy yeast, off temperatures or incorrect pH, to name a few. All of this leads up to this week’s beer, Blind Faith India Pale Ale from Magic Hat. From the clear golden color with bubbles cascading upward, to the fluffy white head that left lace clinging to the sides of the glass, this was a beer as pleasing to the eye as it was to the tongue. Hoppy notes of lemony citrus highlighted the aroma, with grapefruit and

I recently gave a talk on various aspects of beer history to a Wis. organization and had a chance to use Microsoft’s PowerPoint presentation software for the first time. Unlike the company’s other clunky software (anyone else besides me find it extremely difficult to make a flyer using Word, where a simple task such as placing an image throws all the text off kilter?), PowerPoint was easy to use and worked flawlessly. One of the first slide images I used for the talk was of a beautiful pint of beer I once had at a brewpub — a stout with a white, three-inch rocky head that stayed all through the sampling. I told the crowd that this was a perfect example of quality brewing and that all good
