GREEN-TECH Green-tree’s intensive roof garden substrate has been installed in a large-scale roof garden for a Barratt development in West Hendon.

Green-tech was called in by Kingston Landscape Group who specialise in commercial landscape installations and grounds maintenance across London.

They are well known and respected for their stunning roof top gardens within some of the London’s most admired developments.

Green-tree Roof Garden intensive substrate was recommended and supplied for the roof top planted areas along with a containerised planting scheme. The substrate is a blend of lightweight aggregate and award-winning Green-tree topsoil. It was ideal for this project due to its lightweight texture and good water-holding capacity which ensures healthy plant establishment in harsh rooftop environments.

Tom Beck, Commercial Manager from Kingston Landscape Group said, “We have worked with Green-tech for a number of years, and particularly like using their Green-tree Roof Garden Intensive topsoil.

It’s lightweight and its properties are ideal for growing in rooftop planters. Their production process and haulage service is very professional and well organised. I have no hesitation in recommending this company and their product on any job.”

HOOK-UP SOLUTIONS The Hooka machine is a tracked mini crawler which is only a metre wide but can lift an impressive 1.5 tonnes! Machines can be hired as self-drive or with an operator.

Landscapers and Builders have been using the Hooka to lift a variety of payloads into restricted/difficult sites where it is not possible for larger machines to gain access.

Land Structure contacted Hook Up in the spring as they were landscaping a very smart development for Ecoworld called the Claves in Millbrook Park in London, NW7. In the courtyard there were a number of trees that needed planting so Hook Up were called in to lift, shift and install them as there was restricted access into the site.

The photo shows the largest one which had a 1.5m root ball and weighed 1.5 tonnes – which was right on the Hooka’s limit, but it managed it!

So Landscape designers, when you are designing for your customers please bear the Hooka machine in mind so that you can deliver the wow factor to them!

Landscape Gardeners, why double handle when you can use the Hooka machine to do the grunt work and save you time, money and backache!

This will be Hook Up’s fourth year at the LANDSCAPE Show and they always look forward to meeting new customers who are not aware of the benefits the Hooka machine can bring and, of course, catching up with their old ones too.

This rear garden is situated on a difficult, irregular-shaped plot in Surrey. The shape needed to be regularised both through the design of the hard landscaping and the planting layout to make the space feel larger and longer, and to provide enough space for a large lawn. The client required two seating areas, a dining area, a built-in BBQ and a separate area for a drum kit. The garden faces east and has limited light at the fringes, so it was important that the planting varied according to the different light conditions.

The darker boundary beds were planted with shade-tolerant planting with seasonal interest - Hebes and Hydrangeas, ferns and other plants such as libertia and anemones to provide colour.

Privacy was a priority for the owner, who has a high public profile, so Charlotte Rowe planted a large amount of beech hedging and some mature trees to screen the garden from neighbours, a row of Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ along one boundary, as well as an avenue of flat-top Plane trees to take the eye down the garden.

Close to the house is a small area of gravel with strips of stone running through it. The gravel is punctuated with clumps of sunloving mounded shrubs and herbs, softening the whole area, and acting as a break within a large expanse of hard landscaping.

The beds on one side of the water feature and the dining area have ‘cloud’ clipped planting of different size globes and species to provide structure and a sense of enclosure. The effect is softened with Hakonechloa macra planted amongst the globes.

Do you have a favourite plant or flower? Which one?

Q

Which garden or landscape has most inspired you?

Great Dixter is a real inspiration. It looks effortless but the eye for detail and knowledge that goes into those plant combinations is incredible. There is always something new that takes your breath away and you want to dash home to copy.

Q

With less young people entering the industry, how would you improve things?

The proven benefits that horticulture can have on stress levels and mental health could be used much more by schools and pre-schools to get children outside and creating something beautiful, even if it is a single sunflower in a pot. The problem is that there is little or no funding and often no space in schools to do this, but if we could introduce more children to the joy of working with and caring for plants, it would be a start.

I adore Nepeta - lasts a long time, great for wildlife and pets, and such a range of beautiful colours that it can be used to underplant so many things thereby hindering the weeds. I use it everywhere!

We were recently planting a new sensory walkway for the dogs at Battersea’s Old Windsor site with lots of Nepeta included, and when we went to pick up the plants we discovered that Rosie, the site cat, had been enjoying it first!

Who from the industry would you most love to meet?

Who wouldn’t I like to meet?! I love talking to everyone about horticulture, whether they are famous designers or enthusiastic amateurs as there is so much to learn and I always pick up a useful tip.

The great attraction of LANDSCAPE is not only the opportunity to learn a lot from the seminars, but to meet and chat to other people in the profession.

APL The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) accredits landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK against a strict inspection process on an annual basis. This ensures that we can promote our members to the public knowing they will offer a professional service to the best of our ability.

GREENFIX As part of the ongoing work at The Airfields in Deeside, Greenfix has been working closely with contractor D Morgan PLC during the construction of Swales on site.

Work carried out on this site included the excavation cut of 23,000m3 and fill of 5,000m3 to create drainage Swales with a total length of 1,110m. The loose soil of the newly cut Swales required a product that would provide erosion protection and vegetation establishment that would also be easy to handle on site. The Covamat Plus Pre-Seeded Erosion Control Blanket was selected as it met all these requirements.

At the time of writing 21,500m2 of Covamat has been installed. The Covamat Plus range comprises biodegradable, 10-15mm thick quilted natural-fibre blankets. The blankets are available in either 100% straw, a 50% straw and coir mix or 100% coir. For this project, the 100% straw option was selected.

Greenfix Pre-Seeded blankets are available with a choice of six standard seed mixes, including wildflower. Alternatively, sitespecific seed mixes can be incorporated where applicable. For this project a sitespecific mix was chosen to fit with the local habitat. The D Morgan site manager said “The product was very easy to install and looked fantastic after being laid. The grass seed mix has grown evenly very well and saves the need for hydro seeding at a later date, where access can be awkward. The product has been used now on various D Morgan projects and we will highly recommend its use on our future projects.’’

URBAN STREET DESIGNS

Working on a residential project in Buckinghamshire, Urban Street Designs worked alongside J &S Scapes to manufacture this stunning statement pergola.

Sat on top of a raised paving area, the 4 metre wide by 4.5 metre long pergola stood at a height of 2.2 metres, and is a contemporary way to partition the space off to create a private seating area. The contrasting square cross beams and tubular side screens create interesting shading and act as a safety barrier where required. The

Powder-coated finish allows it to tie in with the furniture and also mirror the colour in the end client’s house cladding. The Pergola was designed and manufactured in such a way that it can be broken down into easy-to-handle sections for transportation and a quick and easy assembly.

This Pergola was manufactured and finished in-house in the UK by Urban Street Designs, using state of the art machinery, prime materials and experienced engineers and designers. Bound only by the requirements of their clients; their substantial engineering

capabilities make for an unlimited number of possibilities. Each of Urban Streets Designs’ projects is unique and is treated as such, providing every client with a bespoke service tailored to meet their exact requirements.

ADDAGRIP TERRACO

Addagrip was delighted to be involved in the creation of new pathways using Terrabase Classic Resin Bound surfacing at the Cowbridge Physic Garden in South Glamorgan.

Having completed the construction of the Cowbridge Physic Garden in 2006, Addagrip approved installer Landcraft Projects Ltd was approached by the Cowbridge Physic Garden Trust to advise on an alternative surface for the original stone dust paths which had begun to wear and breakdown leading to an uneven surface and muddy conditions in wet weather.

Having seen Terrabase Rustic used at Kew Gardens, the Physic Garden Trust were keen to have a similar surface in the garden and Landcraft were able to advise and provide samples of the many options available.

To help them with their final decision, members of the trust arranged a visit to Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew to view the Terrabase resin in-situ at the Broad Walk and to discuss how the new surfacing is performing. Following their visit, the Trust decided on Terrabase Classic - the Terrabase system with a smaller 6mm Chestnut finish laid to a depth of 30mm.

The garden is a very popular attraction in the historical market town of Cowbridge and attracts visitors from across the UK and beyond so the Trust was keen to keep disruption to a minimum. With the limited access and the need to keep the garden open, Landcraft Projects proposed a 6 week programme with the surfacing works being undertaken in phases. The existing

A fusion of 100% recycled acrylic, sustainably sourced wood, and handcrafted metal meet to produce a fascinating addition or centre piece to any garden design.

Showing the project from the start, the surveying stage, site analysis, client meetings, the engineering, the boystoys, collaboration with architects and all the talented trades that come together to create a beautiful high-end or be-spoke garden - a behind the scenes look at all the hard work, liaising, highs, lows and sleepless nights of a garden build!

LONDON COLLEGE OF GARDEN DESIGN

The London College of Garden Design has committed to plant trees to celebrate every student that graduates from one of their diploma courses in the future. As students prepare for graduation this week LCGD will be donating a tree for each of their 50 students who are graduating from the Garden Design and Planting Design Diplomas. The donation will go to the NHS Forest that works with healthcare professionals and organisations to make green spaces available for health purposes.

Director Andrew Fisher Tomlin said “We have been inspired by recent developments in other countries where graduates will be required to plant trees in order to receive their qualification. We chose the NHS Forest because they have a proven record of planting thousands of trees on NHS land, enabling more people to access green spaces

Whatever is in season, but if I had to choose only one, it would have to be the humble apple tree. The blossoms are gorgeous in the spring, you get fantastic fruit from it, shade and structure from its branches and you can hang a hammock from it for spending lazy summer days reading in.

If it has to be something selfish, it would be travelling.

Modern gardens are generally very different from post-WW2 “dig for victory” gardens; home to rows of potatoes, beans and currants; and separated by hedges or chain link fences. Back then, few gardens were geared towards the leisure, privacy or careful design we see now. Despite a resurgence in grow your own, many gardens are dominated by low maintenance paving, gravel, or artificial grass so owners can spend more time on other pursuits.

ColourFence, popular in Australia for decades is gaining ground in the UK, spreading down streets as people see it, love the look and install in their own garden.

When storms sent John Pilkington’s garden fence across the lawn in pieces, he replaced it with ColourFence. John explained the reason behind the transition: “We love our garden but are happy to swap maintenance for our real passion, caring for the garden birds and wildlife. When winds destroyed the timber fence my neighbour and I had lavished care (and paint) on over the years, a family member suggested ColourFence.

Initially, metal fencing sounded industrial,

but photos convinced us to get a quote. We eventually opted for a brown ColourFence and it looks similar to the fence it replaced – only new! The bright side is it won’t blow away and is guaranteed to look great for 25 years!”

Ares Landscape Architects Ltd mandates quality in all areas of their practice. Led

by Directors Ricardo and Ania Ares, the firm serves as an advisor for all areas of landscape planning and design, providing services such as capacity and feasibility studies, impact assessments, site planning, contract administration, modelling, and community project consultation.

In 2016, the UK government mandated BIM Level 2, a requirement that would directly impact the firm’s work in the public realm.

Ares needed a software program that creates models with associated data — easily shareable in a 3D environment. An

opportunity presented itself when they were tasked to work on the City Hub at Nottingham College.

Using Vectorworks Landmark, Ares could facilitate their tight BIM execution plan (BEP). Although collaborators used different software programs, Ares stated expectations tied to IFC models by clearly defining BIM requirements. They also fully embraced Landmark’s 2D to 3D functionality. Using features such as the Hardscape Tool, the 3D Polygon Tool, and the Plant Tool, the firm could easily draw, adjust, edit, and replace elements of the model as needed.

Alan Titchmarsh because he’s such a hero in the gardening world and last year I read an article where he admitted being responsible for launching the decking market with his show Ground Force and this was the catalyst to Arbor Forest launching our Abordeck softwood timber decking brand.

Which garden or landscape has most inspired you?

There are two gardens which I always think about and which really impressed me when I first visited them. The first are the gardens at Belvoir Castle because it’s got 4 very different areas like the Japanese garden and the Formal garden, which are all stunning. The second is the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney which is located in such a great spot where the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera house can be seen and there are some amazing tropical plants with such a fabulous history.

With less young people entering the industry, how would you improve things?

There is a bit of work to do to educate children on the different roles available from landscape architects to soil experts to landscaping assistants. Also, there’s a trend at the moment of people opting for low maintenance gardens because they haven’t got time to spend maintaining it and I think this means that less children are getting involved in gardening at home. Get children involved in activities in school from as young as possible.

What’s one item you couldn’t live without?

Apart from my family it would be have to be my trainers. I love running and the best part about travelling with work is being able to run in different places. I’ll definitely be doing a few laps of Battersea Park during the LANDSCAPE Show week.

KATIE MORGAN BATTERSEA DOGS & CATS HOME

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has been caring for dogs since 1860 when Mary Tealby opened The Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs in Holloway. The Home moved from the urban streets to the countryside of Battersea in 1871 at a time when the King’s Road, just across the river, was a home for exotic plant nurseries and market gardens.

The home takes in over 7000 dogs and cats each year, caring and often nursing them back to health for as long as necessary to find their forever home. During their stay, however long that might be, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home want them to be relaxed and stress free because recent research has proven that relaxed animals are rehomed quicker, and are less prone to infectious diseases which delay rehoming.

To achieve this, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have been creating sensory spaces

and gardens built around plants and natural resources at their three sites in Battersea, Old Windsor and Brands Hatch. Enriching daily walks for dogs and stimulating senses with fragrance, texture and colour also makes the sites more beautiful for the 350 staff and more than 1000 volunteers who care for the animals.

Battersea use non-toxic plants that can be sniffed or walked on; brushed up against or pee-ed upon; logs and tree stumps to climb over or pee on; pallets repurposed as mobile lawns to roll on or pee on (there is a theme growing here!) or green walls filled with medicinal herbs and wheat grass that dogs can self-select to nibble on.

The total number of planters for this project has exceeded 50 units all of which supplied in the Idealist Lite range for the front of the property and the rear garden space.

Having used Platipus Tree Anchoring Systems before, I knew that they would work for the trees and the hedging. As the hedges were rootballed but smaller than the trees, using the smaller RF0P kits allowed for them to be secured and once solidly fixed we were able to cut it as a single hedge. One of the great things about this process was that no one on the garden build, apart from me, had used Platipus Tree Anchoring Systems before and it took less than 15 minutes for everybody to have mastered the technique of installing them.

Reduce waste and use of materials that are too high tech and ecologically detrimental, that age badly rather than gaining patina, and then just get replaced in turn.

BCA MATERIAUX ANCIENS

All design professionals and suppliers appreciate returning to successful projects years later, seeing how the scheme has matured, and the positive contacts with their client. This isolated Norman farmhouse and gardens was sympathetically restored, extended and landscaped 20 years ago using literally tonnes of BCA Matériaux Anciens reclaimed antique materials. Returning there was a particular pleasure for the French firm’s anglophone maestro David Ackers, as it was he who’d designed and overseen the project before becoming so involved with BCA Matériaux Anciens’ export department.

One of the photos shows gravel being renewed in the medieval-inspired courtyard garden, below which once lurked the farmyard slurry pit. The following antique reclaimed materials specified from BCA Matériaux Anciens at the time; Granite troughs, water-course gullies, steps, paving and setts, Railway girders supporting a deck, Reclaimed railway wagon boards for decking, Antique French limestone door and window surrounds, and walling stone and Reclaimed antique terra-cotta tiles and oak floorboards for interior flooring.

EXTERNAL WORKS

Most of them (or comparable materials) are available from stock at either of their two stockyards, depots, workshops and showrooms in Normandy (East of Caen) and in the Maine & Loire (North-West of Angers). Deliveries are easily organized directly to projects across Europe and worldwide, with UK deliveries most weeks.

Materials such as these are equally appropriate for UK projects, BCA’s antique limestone flagstones and setts are regularly specified for projects in the Cotswolds.

The Arbordeck Awards are back, and this year the scheme will also be open to installers of Arbordeck softwood timber decking as well as Trex composite decks.

Installers can enter five awards categories: Best Small Trex Deck, Best Large Trex Deck, Best Commercial Trex Deck, Best Trex Design Solution and Best Arbordeck Softwood Timber Deck.

Every entry will be automatically submitted into the coveted ‘Deck of the Year’ award, which celebrates the best decking installation in the UK. The winner of this award, which will be selected by the Arbordeck Awards judging panel, will walk away with a money-can’t-buy trip for two to the US capital, Washington DC, and a visit to the

THE GARDENERS GUILD LLP

GEOSYNTHETICS The Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre is used by the University of Manchester for astronomical research. It is home to the famous Lovell telescope, the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. The visitor centre and arboretum at the site are very popular throughout the year for educational visits. The existing car park was mainly a mixture of road stone and soil that had become muddy and unsuitable. The centre wanted a more attractive finish that would perform better whilst being able to cope with cars and coaches.

The project architects Planit-IE contacted Geosynthetics Ltd in August 2017 looking for a solution for the car park. After further discussions about the intended use and the need for coach access, TTE® was proposed.

Planit-IE discussed this with their client who liked TTE® with its greater strength and resistance to lateral forces.

Bethell Construction were awarded the contract to carry out the installation.

Geosynthetics Ltd made several visits to site to explain how TTE® works and supported the contractor during the installation process.

The final choice was the colour of the unique concrete block inserts for demarcation.

Samples were again supplied and dark grey was chosen. Installation continued right through to the end of July with Geosynthetics Ltd continuing to assist with technical support, including aggregate selection and material expansion during the very warm spell in the summer of 2018.

Now complete, TTE® is providing Jodrell Bank with a solid, robust and permeable car park surface.

During March and April of this year, TGG members were invited to take part in 3 separate garden related television productions! Members had the opportunity to be paid TV judges, be filmed during garden development projects and even create living sculptures!

Horticultural knowledge is respected.

GEORGE PLUMPTRE THE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME

The National Garden Scheme organises the opening of private gardens to raise funds for nursing and health charities. It was founded in 1927 to raise funds for district nurses and since then has donated more than £55 million. Current annual donations are £3 million – raised at the 3,500 gardens which open annually and represent a complete cross section of gardens in England and Wales, from tiny urban plots to spacious country gardens. Many have significant design elements or outstanding planting; most are only ever accessible to visitors on the few days they open in aid of the National Garden Scheme.

With rich evidence from the gardens and their owners, combined with the National Garden Scheme’s long established links with nursing and health, in recent years the charity has championed the health and

wellbeing benefits of access to gardens. In 2016, it commissioned the King’s Fund to produce a report; ‘Gardens and Health, Implications for Policy and Practice’. Since then the annual donations have included funds for charities carrying out projects designed to have clear health benefits. An outstanding example of this is Horatio’s Garden, a charity which builds gardens in hospitals for the patients of spinal injuries units, and which the National Garden Scheme has funded since 2017.

Horatio’s Garden has already built three gardens, at units in Salisbury, Glasgow and Stoke Mandeville. The most recent is the garden designed by Bunny Guinness for the unit at the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries in Oswestry, which is opening in September 2019 and is the subject of George Plumptre’s Tuesday seminar at the LANDSCAPE Show.

SOLID SOUL DESIGN Solid Soul Design has been designing and manufacturing concrete since 2001, exploring the fluid design possibilities that concrete offers combined with a desire to reduce the environmental impact of their products. This led them to start working in Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC), a material that reduces the Carbon foot print of a product by 40% as compared with standard concrete.

In their Hex-Blocks, Solid Soul use GRC to make a shell of concrete, approximately 18mm thick. The hexagonal blocks come in different heights, reminiscent of the Giants Causeway and can be arranged as integrated seating and planting areas, opening up spaces and divide gardens accordingly. They are light and durable, giving gardeners the opportunity to get creative and playful!

This summer, Solid Soul Design added a new product to their range, The Snug Bench, which combines GRC and oak. Designed to bridge the gap between modern and traditional style, the oak is reminiscent of the long tradition of garden benches, while the sleek lines and curves of GRC brings it into a new era. KEBUR GARDEN MATERIALS

Landscaping supplier Kebur Garden Materials last month scooped a coveted Silver Award at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, its first year being involved in a show garden. The garden, A Place to Meet, was designed by Cherry Carmen for the landscape industry body, the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL). As well as supplying the hard landscaping materials for the project, Kebur’s professional team of installers also led the build, with 18 APL member companies involved.

soft waves of naturalistic planting at home, revealing how small spaces can be modern and functional, while beneficial to nature.

Kebur Landscape Division’s Craig Deeley, said “We worked with Cherry Carmen to push a design concept that we think really demonstrates excellence in landscaping, and we’re particularly proud of this garden as it represents a true community build”. The team used Kebur’s sawn Contempo Pearl White Sandstone and Black Granite to create areas to sit, relax, enjoy and entertain on balmy summer evenings, with a private plunge pool to soak away the stresses of hot summer days.

Living on the Gloucestershire/Warwickshire border the garden that has inspired me the most is definitely National Trust’s Hidcote Garden created by Lawrence Johnston 100 years ago it is beautiful at all times of year but I always loved the wisteria in May the most which are incredibly old.

Gloriosa Lilies are my favourite and were in my wedding bouquet as well as on the tables at our wedding.

Apart from the sensible things like paying off the mortgage I would be arranging a holiday of a lifetime for my friends in Ireland/England/America and Australia to meet in Thailand.

All the paving stones were bespoke and individually designed to be accurately incorporated into specific locations within the landscape design. Over seventy-five individual paving pieces were manufactured for the intricate geometric pattern of the terrace which the installers, The Outdoor Room, had to fit within an extremely tight timescale.

The garden explores themes of progress, evolution and thought patterns through materials. Johnsons Wellfield stone was selected because the designers wanted a consistent, high quality, buff colored stone that would complement the gardens artistic aims.

HEDGES DIRECT

Pollution from traffic fumes and particulate matter is reaching high and illegal levels on a regular basis across the country with one in three children growing up exposed to unsafe levels of air pollution. Hedges Direct partnered with Green-Tech recently supplying Channel 4’s Dispatches programme with Hedera Helix Ivy Screens, 1.8m high x 1.2m wide and other garden plants in support of a ground-breaking experiment at Lordship Lane Primary School in London.

Documented over a 2 week period, the school underwent changes both externally and internally to attempt to combat the effects of pollution throughout.

The levels of both Nitrogen Dioxide from exhaust fumes and other particulate matter from brakes and tyres produced by all vehicles (including electric), were measured before and after for comparison. Prior to the experiment, the Nitrogen Dioxide levels and

other particulates around the school were found to be over 50% higher than ‘acceptable’ levels.

At the end of the 2 week period, levels were measured again and the results were nothing short of staggering. In the playground and external areas of the school, the addition of the Ivy Screens and garden plants had reduced the pollution levels by as much as 53% – a significant reduction within a very short timeframe.

For schools and nurseries in heavily trafficked areas across the UK, of which there are over 2,000 that fall into high/illegal levels of pollution areas, this information will no doubt be invaluable.

Urbis were recently asked to provide dual purpose planters for Bloom! York Horticultural Festival, a festival to celebrate the Ancient Society of York Florists 250th Anniversary, the oldest society in the world.

Urbis transformed their Lily Bowl allowing for planting and seating, it was a great success and they are now situated in York Museum Gardens as a permanent fixture.

Working directly with garden professionals, Urbis provide beautiful, unique pieces to

enhance their garden designs either with planters or water bowls.

DOVEWOOD PLANTS

Dovewood Plants, experts in commercializing certified olive trees and topiary plants, is a new player in the industry that will be present in the 2019 edition of the LANDSCAPE Show.

The company was created 1 year ago by Vincent Smith, an expert on environmental projects, and Sam Hilden, who grow-up in a family with more than 40 years of experience in the landscaping industry.

The idea came up due to climate changes.

GAVIN MCWILLIAM MCWILLIAM STUDIO

This roof terrace to the rear of a London townhouse was to provide a sanctuary in the city and a world of its own, where fragrance and colour combine with texture and character to deliver a stunning family garden.

The challenge was it had to be constructed over an existing 1970 concrete slab. The tolerances for soil and drainage depths were incredibly tight as the client did not wish to rebuild the main roof structure.

Working closely with Multilateral Structural Engineers and Landscape Associates, McWilliam Studio designed an intensive green roof that spanned the terrace, combining it with GRP Corten planters so larger trees could be planted, improving privacy.

The planting is a soft and textured gravel garden with seasonal colour and interest.

Gravel paths run through the space allowing you to be immersed in the landscape. Prunus Accolade was specified in the larger planters to deliver a profusion of early blossom.

For materials, a light touch was used; quite literally as weight loading was of critical importance. The emphasis was on interesting details that reveal themselves on closer observation.

THE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME The National Garden Scheme gives visitors unique access to 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales, and raises impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake.

Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors, The National Garden Scheme has donated a total of £58 million to nursing and health charities, and made an annual donation to their beneficiaries of £3 million in 2019. Founded in 1927 to support district nurses, they are now the most significant charitable funder of nursing in the UK and their beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

The National Garden Scheme doesn’t just open beautiful gardens for charity – they are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens too. They fund projects which promote gardens and gardening as therapy, and in 2017, they launched their annual Gardens and Health Week to raise awareness of the topic.

ARTISANS OF DEVIZES

LONDON LIVING Working closely with architect and designer Mittelman Associates and their client, Artisans of Devizes conducted a rigorous on-site sampling procedure to select a single stone for a seamless interior/exterior transition. In the end, they supplied some 900 square metres of Trusloe – an ultrahard natural limestone, with beautiful pewter and bronze inflections – and it was used for everything from the swimming pool to the kitchen, indoor and outdoor living and dining spaces and hallway.

POOLSIDE PERFECTION Commissioned by interior designer Gramlick Designs and Jonathan Rhind Architects, this exceptional outdoor space with adjoining pool-house makes summer entertaining a dream. As well as indoor spaces, Artisans of Devizes sourced hard-wearing Buscot Limestone and gave it a tumbled and etched finish for the patio area. They also supplied matching bespoke stone for the firepit wall copings and curved pool edges.

Their bespoke team visited the site to digitally template the copings and edges.

These were then fabricated in their workshops from 4cm thick stone slabs.

EUROPEAN BOXWOOD & TOPIARY SOCIETY

As part of EBTS’s aim to encourage knowledge about all things boxwood and topiary, it has undertaken a series of media interviews. This included BBC Gardeners’ World in which EBTS UK Chairman, Chris Poole, explained ways of dealing with the current threat from box tree moths and caterpillars. It was filmed at the National Trusts, Ham House where EBTS has facilitated trials of female moth deterrents.

For domestic gardeners, horticultural services and garden designers EBTS runs a free online map using crowd sourced data to show the spread of box tree moths across the country – available on the EBTS Website.

SOPHIE CAMERON SIMON SCOTT LANDSCAPING

Sophie Cameron recently re-visited the beautiful wildlife pond Simon Scott Landscaping created as part of a much larger garden build project. It was buzzing with life, dragonflies were aplenty and newts have taken up residence which Simon, Sophie and the clients were so happy about. This year has been a really busy time for them, with involvement in some fantastic projects. They have just completed a large residential garden build designed by Nigel Philips Landscape and Garden Design. This project involved a complete re-work of a large swimming pool area, Breedon gravel pathways and oak sleeper retaining terraces surrounded by deep herbaceous borders leading up to new terrace with wisteria and rose clad pergola. A

beautiful garden for lovely clients. They are also delighted to be about to commence building a garden designed by Acres Wild Landscape and Garden Design, a really exciting project for them.

Simon Scott Landscaping is run by Simon Scott and Sophie Cameron, based in Lewes, East Sussex. They are Landscapers who work with Garden Designers and are members of BALI. Sophie will be taking part in the panel discussion ‘Staying in Love with our Industry: Celebrating the Highs and Surviving the Lows’ happening on Tuesday 17th September as part of the LANDSCAPE Show 2019.

LANDSCAPE COLLECTIVE

Landscape Collective (LC) was asked to address both landscape and arboricultural conditions associated with the grant of planning permission for comprehensive regeneration of the grade II listed Beltwood House in Dulwich. Complex negotiations were required to manage the sensitive removal of trees covered by a woodland tree preservation order and within a conservation area. In combination with the arboricultural report, detailed hard and soft landscape proposals were produced to provide a comprehensive landscape scheme for the site. All conditions were discharged in November 2018.

LC has also recently been instructed to carry out the re-design of the central avenue for an independent private day school, in the Home Counties. They were asked to provide three options that would tie in existing historic features with a more cohesive design that linked important views and access requirements. The three options included different proposed costs and design styles. The preferred option draws reference from some classical forms of garden design, with a multi layered avenue of trees. The tree planting also will help to soften the impact of the large brick listed buildings that sit adjacent to the planting.

STONE FEDERATION Stone Federation, Great Britain, are the trade association for the natural stone industry and therefore are ideally placed to provide design and selection advice for landscape projects of all description.

Stone Federation is delighted to be part of the seminar programme at the LANDSCAPE Show and will be looking at how to ethically source the natural stone you use.

This is Stone Federation’s fourth year speaking at the event which has always provide them with a fantastic opportunity to connect with landscape designers, architects and specifiers looking at using natural stone.

As part of the seminar, Stone Federation will be giving an introduction to the Ethical Stone Register, a unique resource created specifically for the natural stone industry, in response to The Modern Slavery Act 2015 and the issues of sourcing materials responsibly. The scheme allows natural stone companies, whatever their size, to offer a responsible and manageable ethical sourcing solution to their clients.

Their seminar will enable you to provide your clients with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that the materials in their garden or commercial landscape have been ethically, responsibly and sustainably sourced.

Which garden or landscape has most inspired you?

Fenland. The landscape has an understated beauty that many dismiss, you have to go looking for it. If you get out into it there are hidden drains full of fish and wildfowl, and foreshore areas on which I used to get up very early and go out wildfowling on cold mornings when I was younger, you could be on a different planet out there on the marsh as the sun rises and everything wakes up.

The sunsets are great too.

Do you have a secret skill or talent you can share?

I can T bud roses and chip bud trees.

Jasmine officiales ‘Var. Clotted Cream’ we have one of these in our garden it is huge now and gives great scent every year from mid - June to mid - July, you can’t beat it.

With a lottery win what would you blow the budget on?

I would quit work, buy a van and start picking up litter. I would fan out from my home and just keep going. I would try and start a movement.

My Grandad, he was the best fun. He brought me huge roles of paper home from his work so we could draw wide, sprawling scenes and he taught me woodwork, gardening and countless DIY skills. By 8, I could glaze doors, cut a mitre joint, grow tomatoes and hang wallpaper. It’s thanks to him that I took for granted that I could do anything I wanted to. In hindsight, he was a massive feminist!

With less young people entering the industry, how would you improve things?

It has to come down to a few key things; increased levels of pay & proper benefits, meaningful, industry-wide qualifications, a higher level of professionalism throughout the industry, an appreciation of all the roles within horticulture and a glossy marketing campaign to let younger people know what a brilliant industry this is to work in.

Who from the industry would you most love to meet?

Christopher Lloyd, he made a huge impact on the garden and many of the people that I feel close to and admire. I regret that I didn’t meet him but I think that’s because everyone at Great Dixter does such a great job of keeping his spirit alive that you feel you almost know him. He’s such a palpable presence there, still, you feel you might turn the corner of a yew hedge and happen upon him, yet he’s always just out of reach.

Do you have a favourite plant or flower? Which one?

My sweet peas are rubbish this year (my fault entirely, down to total neglect) and as I looked at the pathetic few flowers that appeared last week, I vowed never to go another summer without bucket loads of them to fill my house. So I guess they must be a serious contender...

LONG RAKE SPAR

Long Rake Spar is proud to support Richard Thoday as he attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the shortest time between Lands’ End to John O’Groats on a Penny Farthing. Richard is raising money for Children In Need.

The record was originally set by G P Mills in 1886, when the 19 year old rode across the country on a 53 inch iron-rimmed, solid-tyred Humber Penny Farthing. The route is 840 miles long and each day Richard will be tackling over 170 miles.

As an experienced long distance cyclist, Richard will face long stints in the saddle

and his training has taken him far and wide already. He is regularly seen cycling the Penny Farthing around the countryside that surrounds the Long Rake Spar works.

JAPAN HORT BUSINESS

When it comes to Japanese gardens, Japan Hort Business believe many people imagine Niwaki of pine but do you know why that’s often used in Japanese garden in the first place? In the 17th Century, Daimyos (Japanese feudal lords) were competing with each other and, in order to show their power, created a luxury garden beside their residence.

A pine has strong vitality and considered longevity symbols, so that came to be more often used as garden tree to wish for their family prosperity. Gardeners are familiar with the technique of pruning and these established techniques have been around for a long time.

Unlike European formal, symmetric topiary, Niwaki appear more natural but are in fact cleverly shaped and pruned to

produce impressions of being windswept, gnarled and ancient.

As well as Niwaki, the selection and placement of rocks is one of the most important parts of making a Japanese garden. Therefore, they are not just a gardener, they are also landscape architect.

Japan Hort Business always seeks valuable trees with such gardeners.

Now their recent projects make the Japanese garden in Vladivostok this summer! The garden is made by the Master Gardener, from design to construction. Japan Hort Business takes awesome Niwaki there and never stops challenging!

CORE LANDSCAPE PRODUCTS

Core LP were tasked with the job of reinvigorating a garden space for clients who wanted to install a new lease of life into their garden. Before work began, the garden was already nicely maintained, yet severely cut back trees to the rear of the garden were left looking dead and unkept. Teamed together with the requirement to replace the wooden sleeper boarders that accompanied their stone paving – the team got to work to give this wonderful space in Berkhamsted a fresh new look.

To help mask the trees to the rear, Core suggested using their modular screens fixed

to a wooden subframe. The client chose their Zebra Print design garden screens to sit atop their fence, selecting the Cor-ten finish that certainly lends a certain unique character to this area. The eccentric and exciting screens were paired with replacement oak wood sleepers that boarder the garden – finished with a bench seat provided by Core LP. The client finally chose Core’s premium artificial lawn to replace their grass, ultimately enabling each characteristic to blend together to create a sleek and modern aesthetic.

The carefully selected materials by the

customer resulted in a stunning garden with lots of open space, yet still with characteristics that give this outdoor area a real charm. Considering all aspects of the job and the smoothness of installation, Core ended their time on this job with a fantastic result and one very happy client.

The Yorkshire Moors - I love the dramatic wildness of the landscape and as a child it was my favourite place to be. The energy of the moors is extraordinary.

My absolute favourite is aubergine. I usually grow between 12-15 varieties a year. They are so beautiful in a rather deadly looking kind of way and the fruit is divine.

EUROPLANTERS

The award-winning hotel Radisson Blu Edwardian, Manchester opened in 1998 and is set inside the historic Free Trade Hall, one of the city’s oldest and most iconic buildings, known for its musical past. It has recently undergone a three phase, £10M investment.

Europlanters are proud to have been asked to manufacture and install the very large planters both inside and outside the building.

The architect’s vision was a forest of trees at the entrance of the building which flows through into the reception area.

The ground outside the hotel was very uneven with slopes towards and away from the building and this was a challenge to make sure that the planters sat just right to

match the height of the floor inside. Bespoke planters were also made to fit along the side of the entrance below the windows. All the planters were fitted with light casings so that modern LED lights could be fitted inside.

“It’s been a pleasure working on this project” said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters “we usually work on the Radisson Blu Edwardian groups London based hotels, so it makes a refreshing change to work on something that is closer to home.”

TOPIARIUS MAGAZINE Topiarius’, is the name that was given to the gardeners who clipped the topiary in Rome in the first century AD, and so was adopted by the European Boxwood and Topiary Society (EBTS) for their annual journal.

Now in its twenty-second edition, the magazine Topiarius is distributed free to all EBTS members in the UK, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands and to affiliated societies in the US and Japan.

TREE AID is an International Development Charity which helps people lift themselves out of poverty and protect the environment.

People in this part of the world live in some of the toughest conditions on earth and trees are essential to their survival. In Africa, trees mean life and provide nutrition, generate income and help to create a healthy environment.

Last year was a very successful year for TREE AID; as they planted 1.1 million trees, protected 55,000 hectares of land and supported almost 393,000 people across the drylands of Africa.

In 2017 TREE AID helped thousands of people to realise the potential of trees. 178 enterprise groups in Ghana are now selling their tree products, shea and baobab fruits including to the largest wholesaler in Northern Ghana.

TREE AID will have an even greater impact over the coming five years as they scale-up their work.

Over the next financial year TREE AID are aiming to plant over 1 million trees and regenerate a further 500,000. They will also be supporting 138,239 households through their programmes.

These targets fit into their strategic goals (2017-2022), which are: Plant almost six million trees across Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Mali and Ethiopia, Increase income for 15,000 households by 25% and to be directly helping more than 300,000 households.

Over the next 5 years Tree Aid will be planting 1 tree every 30 seconds across the drylands of Africa.

VETERANS’ GROWTH Veterans’ Growth works with veterans from the tri-services who suffer with mental health issues using Horticultural Therapy.

The charity aims to provide treatment and support to veterans who are unable to access help and support from the NHS or other charitable organisations, or those for whom existing treatments have been unsuccessful.

The charity was founded by Jason Stevens who is a veteran of 16 years in the Army.

Jason undertook tours in Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone and spent time in Germany. He was medically discharged from the MOD in 2016, after he suffered a bilateral stoke caused by a hole in his heart. The aim of the charity is to provide support and a place on the programme to every veteran in the UK who wants to attend and/or was unable to access help through other channels.

They believe that if one life is saved as a result of contact with the charity then it is a success. Any amount of investment would be justified if they could prevent just one suicide, because they believe you cannot put a price on a life.

This year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live included five gardens on APL Avenue showcasing some of the amazing talent from within the association, and the BBC Gardeners’ World Live Young Landscapers Award highlighting some of the upcoming talent within the industry. This year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live Young Landscapers Award garden was designed by Professor David Stevens.

The gardens received: • Winners - Gold Award - Matthew Woods (Myerscough College) & Sam Gordon (The Gardenmakers) - Young Landscapers Competition • Gold Award - Brian Hughes & Reece Mckay (both College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) - Young Landscapers Competition The five gardens on APL Avenue received: • Platinum Award and Best Construction Design It Landscapes - Designed by Lucy Bravington Design

• Gold Award – Gadd Brothers - Designed by Catherine MacDonald & Rhiannon Williams • Silver Merit Award - Creative Roots Designed by Toby Pritchard • Silver Award - Morgan Oates - Designed by Anna Pawlowska • Silver Award- Timotay Landscapes Designed by Robyn Brookes & Keith Walmsley (Timotay Landscapes) The five front or back gardens that featured on the APL Avenue, gave the public the opportunity to witness first-hand what can be achieved in a small space.

The APL and John Lewis Home Solutions garden was awarded a Gold Award, and APL members Big Fish Landscapes were awarded a Silver Award for their Macmillan Legacy Garden, designed by Martyn Wilson.

ROSEMARY COLDSTREAM ROSEMARY COLDSTREAM GARDEN DESIGN

This project Rosemary has been working on in Buckinghamshire has recently completed its third stage in the landscape design. Situated on the chalky Chilterns it started with the client wanting to update the country garden to make better use of the grounds.

The first stage involved the areas around the house and pool. The front entrance has been defined with drum shaped beech pillars, and the existing beech hedge renovated.

Lavender leads to the front door, and a gravel garden has relocated the parking further from the house, softening the entrance.

A series of terraces wrap around the house leading to the lawn and other areas. A new Orangery provides the focus at the rear of the house while evergreen structure and perennials create colour and drama through the year.

The swimming pool was renovated retaining

the original structure but adding new pool copings and paving in French Limestone.

Blue irises and lavender beds are set next to the small orchard. The stone-clad wall was built to gate off the pool for safety and to provide structure to the garden.

In stage two the woodland was renovated by thinning trees and shrubs and planting perennials and ferns. This will continue to develop over the years. New borders were added, framing the views to the new vineyard. A cone shaped yew was introduced as a partner to an existing one.

The third stage has been the addition of a new driveway with an avenue of ornamental pear trees and the start of a vineyard to produce sparkling wine has just been planted.

Rosemary Coldstream will be taking part in the LANDSCAPE CPD Accredited Seminar Programme as a speaker this year.

BALI

It’s been a busy year so far for the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) and their members. As well as working closely with Defra and the Forestry Commission to advise members on the summer outbreaks of Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) in England, BALI played an instrumental part in providing guidance and support to members who import oak trees from Europe, specifically the Netherlands, where the pest is an ongoing common concern.

BALI also launched their new website, bali. org.uk, in March and have since continued to roll out additional developments to support members. The website welcomes over 8,000 users a month and is a great way for members to promote their service and products to clients, both domestic and commercial. BALI also administers the jointly managed Land-based Industry Skills Scheme and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (LISS/CSCS). The scheme, which includes the use of SmartCards, is recognised

BALI National Landscape Awards 2018 Ceremony

by BuildUK and enables land-based professionals to work on live commercial sites. It recognises an individual’s qualifications and training experience. They have also celebrated record entries for this year’s BALI National Landscape Awards 2019 in July, with 145 entries received, an all-time high in the last 10 years. This year also saw the highest number of first-time entrants submitting a project or scheme.

The ceremony is on 6th December at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London and tickets go on general sale Monday 12th August.

Which garden or landscape has most inspired you?

Q child?

Different landscapes inspire me all the time, my favourite at the moment is the Machair in the outer Hebrides.

Who was your role model as a

As a child my role models were my granny who was both a Suffragette and a very capable woman and Captain Oates.

Who from the industry would you most love to meet?

As a former chair of the SGD I was lucky enough to meet almost everyone I had ever wanted to meet, but some of those old plant hunters like Banks and Hooker would have been fascinating.

Q

Do you have a favourite plant or flower? Which one?

Difficult to choose a favourite flower, but I have to say I get very excited when I find any of the Ophrys (Bee orchid family).

How would you most like to influence the industry?

If I could influence the industry, it would be to encourage them to tread lightly on the landscape.

Who was your role model as a

My Uncle who used to have a long rear garden, half lawn with borders and the other half was a kitchen garden. He used to send me down the cabbage patch to pick off the caterpillars. I have such fond memories of those times and I used to love being in his dilapidated greenhouse bursting with tomatoes. His approach to growing his own food was practical and relaxed, something I am still aspiring to be as a gardener!

Do you have a favourite plant or flower? Which one?

Marigolds. Underused, underrated, perfect companion planting, great for wildlife and reminds me of my Uncles garden.

Do you have a secret skill or talent you can share?

I am a mean sweet pea grower. One day I will sort out showing them, in time.

Which garden or landscape has most inspired you?

One place I really love is in the suburbs of Sydney where they use the verges at the front of houses by the pathways to grow vegetables and salads. What a marvellous use of space, we could do so much more here in the UK.

With a lottery win what would you blow the budget on?

I have always had this dream of running an animal sanctuary with a beautiful and productive garden. So people would visit the gardens and learn about the wonderful animals we share the planet with. We would run all kinds of horticultural workshops and gardening talks and all live happily ever after.

WISHBONE EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Over the last few months Wishbone Exterior Lighting has been working on some large commercial jobs in Battersea, Wembley and the City of London.

Working with commercial landscapers requires skill, extensive knowledge of exterior lighting installation as well as patience and understanding of how to work well alongside other contractors involved in the project.

Exterior electrical work can be a lot more complex than interior work due to often working in extreme weather conditions which can also impact the ability to work; the effect

the weather can have on the materials used and the time it takes until the installation is completed.

Branton Bamford has over 30 years’ experience in exterior lighting design and installation projects and is able to navigate through the ups and downs of large commercial exterior installations, ensuring all jobs are completed to the highest of standard and in full working order once completed.

GLOBAL STONE PAVING

August is the time when Global Stone start discussions and production of the 2020 brochure.

Global Stone discuss what exciting new products and ranges they will add within their natural stone and porcelain paving collections.

This time provides them an excellent opportunity to look at customer and expert feedback, along with Global Stone’s new owners’ wishes for the brochure going forwards. They will review the layout of the brochure, including new articles and trends and provide information fitting for both merchant customers as well as the end users.

DEVELOP YOUR PASSION FOR PLANTING DESIGN At the London College of Garden Design our aim is to provide world- class, inspirational garden design training. Our six month Planting Design Diploma has been created to enable students to learn from the very best designers and plants people.

Through practical workshops, inspirational lectures and visits the Planting Design Diploma explores contemporary and traditional approaches to support and develop your planting design skills. This is a unique course not found anywhere else in Europe, delivered over 30 days from January to June at our home in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
