First populated around 5000 years ago, the Loch Lomond area shows signs of neolithic settlement at Balmaha, Luss, and Inchlonaig. Similarly there is evidence of bronze age settlements across the Cowal peninsula with cairns on Creag Evanachan and Dunchraigaig. On excavation these were found to contain fragments of pottery, charcoal and flint. Crannogs were also built in the area with one known as “The Kitchen”, on Clairinsh island being used as a meeting place by the Buchanan Clan.
These early medieval period raiders also sailed up Loch Long, hauled their longboats over the narrow neck of land at Tarbet, and sacked several islands in Loch Lomond. After the sacking of the stronghold at Dumbarton Rock in 870, Vikings used Lochs Long and Lomond to access the early medieval Scottish kingdoms, not only to ransack but later to trade and settle. They were able to move further inland by dragging overland the smaller boats they carried on their longboats.
Mount Stuart
The west shore of Loch Lomond is home to some significant baronial mansions. The most famous, Cameron House dates from the 14th century and became home of the Smollets in the 1700s. Tobias Smollet, a surgeon, critic and playwright was described by George Orwell as Scotland’s best novelist. Further north is Rossdhu House, dating from a 15th century medieval castle and chapel, its more notable guests have included Mary Queen of Scots. Development in the 1990’s have given it new prominence as a 5 star hotel with one of the top 100 golf courses adjoining. The Scottish Open and European Tour events have been held here.
Scotland’s historic steamship, the SS Sir Walter Scott has been cruising on Loch Katrine for over a hundred years. Built at Dumbarton in 1900, she was then carefully dismantled and shipped up Loch Lomond on a barge. From there she was taken over the hill by horse and cart to Stronachlachar on Loch Katrine where she was finally re-assembled. 2025 marks the 125th anniversary of the steamship sailing on Loch Katrine. In 2024 the stunning Birthplace of Scottish Tourism scenic tower was constructed allowing visitors to enjoy the classic views of Loch Katrine
The last paddle steamer built on the Clyde in 1953, the Maid of the Loch, has operated on Loch Lomond for 3 decades. She is currently undergoing refurbishment at Balloch Pier, ‘Hard Hat’ tours are available to see the best of a working shipyard.
Dumbarton Castle was the centre of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde from the 5th century until 1018. It was an important royal refuge. It is where David II and Mary Queen of Scots both sheltered until ships could take them away from their homeland to France and safety.

Loch Lomond marks the boundary between the Lowlands and the Highlands of Scotland. This area - so close to the major bottling town of Dumbarton - has been at the heart of the whisky industry for centuries. Sadly though, at least nine distilleries around the Loch have been lost over the years, leaving the Loch Lomond Distillery as the only one left in the area to maintain a proud local tradition into the 21st century. The Loch Lomond Distillery is not open for tours but do keep an eye out in shops and behind the bar so that you can try their fantastic whiskies.

Date: 2nd October
Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!
The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.
We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.
The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.
Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the south end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the Highlands. TIMETABLE & PRICES The Jacobite 2025 season
