T
he Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) was established in 1983 to promote and represent individual tour operators in Tanzania and at
international level. It was established at the peak of Tanzania’s economic crisis, when the economy was dominated by the public sector. TATO aims to unify the interests of private tour operators by engaging the government in dialogue to promote tourism and by working to achieve a high quality of tourist services, both nationally and internationally. TATO has over 200 members. Its strategic objectives include: promoting and facilitating members to provide marketable tourist services into the local and world markets; acting as a link between the members, the government and its institutions; coordinating members and helping them in all technical matters pertaining to tourism; and promoting the ability of tour operators to interact with the community at large and to protect the interests of individual tourists.
