around Lake Magadi, while the rare black rhino can be found in the surrounding grassland. Within the conservation area there are a number of luxury lodges. Campsites, hotels and lodges in various price ranges are found nearby in the Karatu area.
‘land of endless plains’ Serengeti, the ‘land of endless plains’, has a national park covering 14,760 sq km and is famous for the annual wildlife migration between December and July. Visitors can access the park by road or fly to one of several airstrips in the vicinity. Game viewing can also be enjoyed beyond the park gates. Serengeti is famous for its lions, leopards and cheetahs and visitors will also find scavengers such as spotted hyenas (which also hunt) and side-striped jackals. If budgets permit, take a dawn balloon ride to really appreciate the vastness of this natural wonder. Camping in the park is the most affordable way to stay in Serengeti, although it may be hard to secure a booking. The lodges and luxury camps are also extremely popular. Various accommodation options are available outside the park, also featuring wildlife and striking scenery. The northern highlands are home to Mount Kilimanjaro, which can be ascended by various routes if properly prepared for the trek. Also in the highlands is Tanzania’s newest national park, Mkomazi, covering 3,300 sq km. This is the scene of a series of remarkable conservation
efforts, including the reintroduction of the critically endangered black rhino and African wild dog.
hiking, cycling and excursions Passing down through the Usambara Mountains, the visitor will also find the beautiful forests of the Amani Nature Reserve, which can be explored on foot or bicycle. One trail passes through the Amani Botanical Garden, with 300 species of trees. Lushoto has a choice of accommodation and also offers cultural tourism excursions. There are opportunities to visit the communities who live across the Northern Circuit such as the cattle-keeping Maasai and the hunter-gatherer Hadzabe.
