M&G Polímeros México, S.A. de C.V. M&G Polímeros México, S.A. de C.V. – located in Altamira’s Petrochemical Corridor – is part of the M&G Group (Gruppo Mossi & Ghisolfi) with its head office in Milan, Italy. M&G is the world’s largest producer of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with sites in Italy, Brazil, Mexico and the USA. The Altamira PET production site is the largest in the M&G Group, with an annual capacity of 510,000 tonnes – due to increase by a further 20 per cent in spring 2008. It provides work for 280 to 300 people. PET is a thermoplastic polymer resin that can be melted and molded into a variety of shapes. A key advantage is that it can be recycled. Owing to its versatile properties, PET is used in a variety of packaging for the food and beverage industry. The raw materials used to produce PET are terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol. About 65 per cent of production from Altamira is exported to the USA or overseas and 35 per cent is sold in Mexico. About 85 per cent of production from this site goes by rail. The Altamira site has been producing PET since October 1997. Originally owned by Royal Dutch Shell, it was bought by the M&G Group in June 2000.
J. Ray McDermott The Port of Altamira has been chosen by J. Ray McDermott (J. Ray) as the location for a new construction facility, providing direct deepwater access to the Gulf of Mexico. Altamira is the latest addition to J. Ray’s global construction locations. Initially, from Altamira, it plans to target projects for Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex). J. Ray’s advanced construction methods, quality production and efficient facilities will cater to the engineering, procurement, construction and installation needs of Mexico’s field development programs in the Gulf. In the long term, J. Ray hopes to fabricate deepwater facilities at Altamira and win work for export to the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, South America and West Africa. Altamira will complement J. Ray’s existing Gulf of Mexico yard at Morgan City, Louisiana, allowing it to enter the Mexican construction market while still serving the needs of its Americas customer base. J. Ray offers a full service engineering, procurement, construction and installation solution for customers in the region thanks to its fully functional, more traditional fabrication yard in Morgan City, its new facility at Altamira, its engineering capabilities in Houston and New Orleans, its deepwater technology joint venture FloaTEC, LLC and its versatile installation vessel, ‘DB50’.
Mexplus Puertos, S.A. de C.V. Mexplus Puertos, S.A. de C.V. is the parent company of OTM and TMA, both of which operate specialized ship terminals in the Port of Altamira. Both terminals are public facilities. Operadora de Terminales Marítimas (OTM) operates a dedicated terminal for handling and storage of liquid bulks. The terminal has 72 meters of quay with 9.8 meters depth. Vessels up to 180 meters in length and 40,000 dwt can berth. OTM has 46,400 cubic meters of storage in 30 tanks. Terminal Marítima de Altamira (TMA) handles dry bulks. It is one of the largest agribulk facilities in Latin America and also handles chemicals and minerals. TMA deals mainly with imports. They include a wide range of grains and seeds and various chemicals and minerals. The terminal has 160 meters of quay with 11.58 meters of depth, allowing vessels up to 225 meters in length and 60,000 dwt to berth. Vessels are worked by three grab cranes. Separate conveyor systems are used to take agribulks and chemicals/minerals to two large dedicated warehouses. There is also a large area of open storage for minerals. The terminal has railroad sidings and facilities for loading rail freight cars, plus an electronic weighbridge for trucks.
