With 3.5 miles of pristine, palm-fringed sands, Santa Monica is home to one of the world’s most famous beaches. Instantly recognizable from its starring roles in film, music, and TV, the shoreline stretches from the shaded groves of Palisades Park in the north all the way to Ocean View Park and its iconic palms in the south. Play beach volleyball in the sport’s spiritual home, paddle a board into the surf, or cycle along one of the world’s great coastal bike paths. Amidst it all stands our beloved Santa Monica Pier—and that’s a great place to begin.
Located at the foot of Colorado Avenue just one block from Downtown, our Pier caused great excitement when it opened in 1909. Since then, it has served as home to the best fishing spot in the Santa Monica Bay, the largest ballroom in the world, an amusement park, a yacht harbor and – most celebrated – the last 440 yards of Route 66. Now as it was then, the treasure known as “The Last Great Pleasure Pier” is the focal point of the bay. Here are the attractions:
Built in 1922, the glorious Looff Hippodrome Carousel is a National Historic Landmark, and if it looks familiar, you’re right: it was where Paul Newman worked in the 1973 classic movie The Sting. And yes, you can ride it during the following times:
Monday - Thursday: 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday - Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. santamonicapier.org
Pacific Park packs in the fun with 12 thrilling rides, including the West Coaster — a Route 66-themed rollercoaster that winds along the edge of the Pier — and the Pacific Wheel, the world’s first and only solarpowered Ferris wheel. Add in boardwalkstyle midway games like Balloon Bust, Whac-a-Mole, and Cat Rack; seaside diners serving up classic Californian bites and Pier specials; cinematic photo ops;
and stunning ocean views, and you’ve found one perfect way to spend a day. pacpark.com
Tucked under the Santa Monica Pier, the Heal the Bay Aquarium is home to the environmental nonprofit dedicated to protecting the people and animals who call Santa Monica Bay home. With over 100 local species on exhibit, hands-on activities for all ages and daily educational programs, it’s a fascinating, thought-provoking reminder for kids of all ages of the precious fragility of our ocean ecosystems. healthebay.org

With its striking turquoise exterior, The Georgian Hotel is one of Santa Monica’s most colorful buildings. Judge Harry J. Borde created this Romanesque Revival and Art Deco building in 1933. It was an immediate hit with LA’s in-crowd, with the city’s first Prohibition Era speakeasy in the basement and a clientele that included Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Fatty Arbuckle and Bugsy Siegel. thegeorgian.com
THE MARION DAVIES GUESTHOUSE
From 1929 to 1942, the oceanside estate that William Randolph Hearst built for actress Marion Davies was the hottest address on the West Coast: a sprawling, 110-room mansion that hosted celebrities including Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin and Winston Churchill. The main property was demolished in 1956 following complaints from neighbor Harold Lloyd. But the beach club, with its magnificent marble-lined Art Deco swimming pool, was saved and is now operated by the city as the Annenberg Community Beach House, offering free

Known as Hollywood by the Sea, Santa Monica has long played a starring role in countless movies and television shows. With 3.5 miles of shimmering coastline, world-famous landmarks and eight distinct neighborhoods, the seaside city offers a living and breathing film set unlike any other in the world — and it’s ready for you to explore.
The historic Santa Monica Pier is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. As the first concrete pier on the West Coast, our Pier has played a starring role in dozens of movies and TV shows including “Iron Man,” 2008; “Her,” 2013; “Forrest Gump,” 1994 and “Three’s Company,” 1977-1984.
The Looff Hippodrome on the Santa Monica Pier is a National Historic Landmark that first opened in 1916. The building houses the treasure that is the Santa Monica Pier Carousel, featuring 44 hand-carved wooden horses. If it looks familiar, that’s because it was where Henry Gondorff, played by Paul Newman, worked in the celebrated 1974 film “The Sting.”
Opened in 1996, Pacific Park is the West Coast’s only amusement park operating on a pier. This ever-popular location features 12 rides, and has been seen in numerous TV shows and movies — perhaps most famously as the set for a performance by Miley Cyrus’s alter-ego in 2009’s “Hannah Montana: The Movie.”
Downtown Santa Monica is a thriving hub for shopping, dining, arts and culture located just east of our Pier. Its heart is the walkable, open-air Third Street Promenade, which starred in the famous shopping scene in Tim Burton’s 1985 hit
“Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” The nearby Santa Monica Place, with its elevated shopping, entertainment and restaurants, can be seen in the 1982 comedy “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” starring twotime Oscar winner Sean Penn.
The Ocean Park neighborhood is home to the Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar, a popular location for pop-ups, special events and filming. The Barker Hangar serves as the set for the out-of-thisworld bowling dance dream in 1998’s “The Big Lebowski” starring Academy Award winners Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore.
Experience movie magic at the Aero Theatre on Montana Avenue, the historic movie house that was built by Donald Douglas, the Santa Monica-based aviation pioneer, in 1939. Centered on repertory screenings and Q&As with actors and filmmakers, the Aero is programmed by American Cinematheque and is featured in the 1995 cult-classic film “Get Shorty.” Insider’s Tip: Catch a star on screen then spot another strolling Montana Avenue, a low-key hotspot for celebrities with its high-end boutiques and quaint restaurants.
Santa Monica State Beach is a true A-lister, having appeared in “Baywatch” from 1989 to 1999 and in 1982’s “Rocky
III” as the training ground upon which Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa trained for his big fight with James “Clubber” Lang.
The Ocean Lodge is small but mighty, offering amazing walkability to the beach, the world famous Santa Monica Pier and the Third Street Promenade. You’ll recognize the motel from the TV series “Goliath,” where Billy Bob Thorton’s character lives while rebuilding his legal career.
Located along the scenic stretch of Ocean Avenue and perched above the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, Palisades Park is featured in the 2001 revival of the Rat Pack classic “Ocean’s Eleven” with George Clooney and Brad Pitt and, most recently, in Greta Gerwig’s 2023 “Barbie.”
Main Street brings laid-back vibes, a weekly Main Street Farmers Market, award-winning restaurants and bespoke shopping experiences. Regarded as the birthplace of modern skateboarding and affectionately known as Dogtown, the neighborhood is heavily featured in the 2005 film “Lords of Dogtown” starring Heath Ledger which tells the true story of the Z-Boys of the Zephyr Competition Team and their rise to skateboarding fame in the mid-1970s. Today, visit Dogtown Coffee for organic coffees and casual bites in the location of the former Zephyr Surf Shop.
American Cinematheque hosts panels and Q&As featuring acclaimed filmmakers and actors ahead of movie screenings. Visitors may catch a star on stage at the Aero and find them strolling Montana Avenue, a low-key hotspot for celebrities, after the show.
Santa Monica is a photographer’s dream, with its gorgeous beachfront views, iconic landmarks and its colorful, buzzing city life. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or just exploring the local scene, there’s no shortage of Insta-worthy spots to fill your feed. From the classic views of the Pacific Ocean to secret spots in the city, here are our top Instagram locations.
Why It’s Instagrammable: The Santa Monica Pier is the instantly identifiable heart of our seaside city. With its colorful Ferris wheel, retro amusement park rides and shoreline views it’s the perfect place to capture both the energy of the city and the tranquility of the coast. Get one shot on the Ferris wheel, a second with the boardwalk and a third posing with a churro or cotton candy with the ocean behind you.
Tip: Visit at night to catch the Pier illuminations at their most spectacular.
Why It’s Instagrammable: This park offers one of the best panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica coastline. With its palm tree-lined walkways and cliffside overlooks, it’s a good location for a serene nature shot. There are plenty of spots to sit, relax and take in the view (and, of course, snap some pictures!).
Tip: Head to the park’s western edge at sunset for breathtaking views of the Pacific — this is where you’ll capture that golden light spilling over the water.
Why It’s Instagrammable: If you’re after a blend of urban energy and style, the Third Street Promenade is the place to be. This pedestrianised street is filled with beautiful trees, outdoor sculptures and eclectic storefronts. Capture street art, local performances and bustling crowds as you explore the area.
Tip: Look for the light installations along the Promenade, especially in the evening when the street comes alive.
The Beach (of course)
Why It’s Instagrammable: For a unique twist on your beach photos, head to the Annenberg Community Beach House. With its beautiful Mediterranean-style architecture, ocean views and iconic “pool house” design, this historic spot has a vintage vibe that’s perfect for a stylish, retro-inspired shot.
Tip: The pool area, complete with a beautiful backdrop of the ocean, is a great place for a sun-soaked, summery shot. Try a vintage filter.
Why It’s Instagrammable: Santa Monica’s beach is legendary, and no visit would be complete without snapping a photo with that cinematic backdrop. Whether you’re lounging on the sand, playing volleyball, catching a wave or simply soaking up those Pacific vibes, the beach offers endless photo opportunities.
Tip: Capture the waves crashing against the shore or pose against the soft pastel hues of the sky during sunset for the perfect beach shot.
Why It’s Instagrammable: Modern, green and beautifully designed, Tongva Park is an urban oasis that combines art, nature and architecture. With its sleek pathways, striking sculptures, water features and well-maintained landscaping, this park is made for the ‘gram.
Tip: Snap a photo in front of the vibrant modern sculptures or pose in the park’s lush green spaces for a relaxing vibe.
SANTA MONICA IN A NEW LIGHT: Gestation III by Baile Oakes (pictured here) invites you to step inside and experience the rhythm of nature through sunlight, shadow and art. Plan your visit during the winter solstice to see the annual phenomenon that turns Santa Monica’s famous sunsets into art, when the sun sets in perfect alignment with the center of the piece. While visiting Santa Monica you may notice our iconic pier looks a little bit different. Beginning in late 2025—and spanning a period of approximately two years—the Santa Monica Pier bridge will be closed and replaced. The new bridge will feature a wider, 15-foot sidewalk on the south side to improve pedestrian access. The main objectives of this project are to enhance vehicle and pedestrian safety, increase visitor access, preserve the bridge’s existing character and visual aesthetics, and address critical structural deficiencies. We are glad you are here, find more information below for easy access.
To access the Santa Monica Pier during construction, a temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed, ensuring uninterrupted access to our beloved icon. The Pier will remain open throughout construction, and visitors can still walk to it from Downtown Santa Monica by heading west towards the ocean and using the temporary bridge on Ocean Avenue.

Route 66 celebrates its centennial
Dubbed the "Main Street of America," Route 66 is America’s most iconic and best-known highway. Opened on November 11, 1926, Route 66 spanned 2,448 miles, connecting Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA. Crossing eight states, the original two-lane blacktop became a vital route for travelers, migrants and truckers, especially during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression eras. The highway found a place in America’s collective imagination as a symbol of the freedom and adventure associated with cars and road trips, thus enshrining its place in American pop culture. Santa Monica is the western terminus of Route 66, with the iconic Santa Monica Pier serving as a symbol of the highway’s connection to the Pacific Coast and a monument to a triumph of American exploration. Today, Santa
Monica continues to cherish and to honor its place on this historic road with the Route 66 End of the Trail sign standing proudly on the Pier to provide a focal point for visitors from around the world who’ve come to explore the nostalgia, the imagery and the stories of the Main Street of America.
In 2026, Route 66 will celebrate its centennial. It’s a milestone on the road that offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reflect on the highway’s profound cultural and historical significance, while also looking forward to its future preservation and celebration. Across the nation, communities along the route are planning commemorative events to honor the legacy of the road that helped shape modern American life.
THE END OR JUST THE BEGINNING? Want to make the most of your Route 66 journey? Santa Monica’s got you covered with historic diners, stunning photo-ops and the perfect way to commemorate your trip.
Combining a laid-back coastal atmosphere with easy access to the region’s top attractions, Santa Monica is where the California dream begins.

CARRY IDENTIFICATION

The County of Los Angeles Fire Department outlines the following water safety tips:
● Always swim and surf near an open lifeguard station and never swim alone.
● Check in with the nearest lifeguard for daily ocean conditions and hazards.
● Always swim and surf within your abilities.
● Use good judgment. If in doubt of the large surf, do NOT go out!
● Never dive into shallow water; remember feet-first every time!
● Use swim fins and a leash whenever bodyboarding.
● Keep a safe distance from
For additional details, please visit the City of Santa Monica website: santamonica.gov
piers and rocks, and always obey warning signs.
● Never throw sand and always fill in holes before you leave the beach.
● Protect yourself from the sun— use sunscreen and wear a hat.
● Respect other beach patrons and remember your beach manners.
● If you or someone in your group gets lost, always find the nearest lifeguard.
● Although pedestrians have the right-of-way at crosswalks, use caution and make eye contact with drivers to make sure they have seen you and are stopping their vehicle.
● Texting or wearing headphones or earbuds and listening to music while walking impedes your hearing and can be distracting.
● Pedestrians should only cross in marked crosswalks and refrain from jaywalking.
● Only cross with the green
light or when the “walk” sign is activated. Pedestrian scrambles are in operation throughout Downtown Santa Monica. At these intersections, a pedestrian-only phase is included in the signal light cycle, allowing people on foot and bikes to cross in every direction, including diagonally, at the same time.
● Use extra care when crossing with children. Remember, drivers may not see little ones; hold their hands while crossing.
● Don’t assert your right of way with a fast-moving vehicle. Allow vehicles enough time to stop for your own safety.
● Pay attention and stay alert.
● Always wear a helmet. (Riders under 18 must wear a helmet by law.) Santa Monica Travel & Tourism’s three Visitor Information Centers offer free “one-size-fits-most” helmets plus free helmet recycling.
● Obey all traffic laws and signals. Stop at stop signs and red lights.
● Riding against traffic is illegal and dangerous. Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and use the bike lane where available.
● Use hand signals and eye contact to communicate with motorists, other bicyclists and pedestrians.
● Make yourself visible to drivers, especially at night. Use lights and reflectors and wear bright clothing.
● At pedestrian scramble crossings, ride across when the bicycle-specific traffic signal lights up with a green bike symbol.
● Santa Monica is an active city. Stay focused on the road at all times.
● Drivers and passengers must always wear seat belts. Children under eight years old and
shorter than 4 foot 9 inches (145 cm) must use a safety seat.
● Pedestrians have the right-of-way at crosswalks. Flashing red or yellow lights indicate drivers must stop. Always wait for pedestrians to safely cross.
● When parking, keep your valuables out of sight or take them with you.
● Except at pedestrian scrambles when the “walk” light is on, or when posted, drivers can turn right at a red light after reaching a complete stop as long as traffic is clear.
BIKE SAFETY: Our bike-friendly city offers a wonderful way to get around with rentals and tour guides.
● Cars are not permitted in bus lanes except to make right turns, which are restricted during peak periods.
● Obey posted speed limits. Drivers are required to pull over for law enforcement and emergency vehicles with lights and sirens on.
● Don’t text or handle your phone while driving—it’s against the law and it increases the likelihood of a collision 23.2 times over unimpaired driving.
● Always keep your distance from a train in motion, stay away from the edge of the platform, never run after or next to a moving train and wait for the train to come to a full stop before approaching.
● Hold onto your children when a train approaches to prevent them from getting too close to the tracks.
● Don’t skate or ride your bicycle on the platform, stairs or escalators.
● When boarding, be careful when crossing the gap between the platform and train.
● Stand clear of the train doors; touching them or leaning on them could obstruct their movement.
● Never climb onto trains or walk on the tracks.
● Be mindful of lowered crossing gates. Never try to beat the train by going around the gates. Instead, wait for them to rise after the train passes.
● As a pedestrian, look and listen for trains in all directions.
● For freeway updates, visit sigalert.com
● For a comprehensive parking map and real-time parking availability at Downtown and beach lots, visit santamonica. gov/places/parking-lots
● Also, get real-time parking availability via the SM Parking and ParkMe apps.
Helmets are required for riders under 18 years of age. Santa Monica Travel & Tourism’s three Visitor Information Centers offer free “one-sizefits-most” helmets plus free helmet recycling.
● Riding with more than one passenger on the scooter is prohibited.
● Motorized scooters must be driven on the road, never on the sidewalk, and cannot be parked on the sidewalk in the way of pedestrian traffic. Riders must follow traffic rules.
● Motorized scooters are not permitted on the beach bike paths, Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade or in municipal parks including Palisades Park.
● Night use of motorized scooters lacking proper lighting equipment is illegal.
The city of Santa Monica is committed to addressing the national issue of homelessness, allocating nearly $42.5 million to fund homeless service programs each year.
