Fig. 8 - Lo schizzo illustra la risoluzione e l'avanzamento di un caso reale per la presenza di grandi quantità di acqua in un ammasso roccioso di gneeiss / The sketch illustrates the resolution and progress of a real case for the presence of large quantities of water in a rock mass of gneeiss e) – Conclusioni La progettazione e costruzione di una galleria, come abbiamo sopra accennato in questa memoria, è condizionata da molteplici fattori che possono variare nel tempo in funzione dell’evolvere delle conoscenze prelimari alle fasi finali, consentendo così, molte volte, di adattare il progetto alle condizioni geologicotecniche che via via si incontrano.

Premise In the construction and design of a tunnel, the preliminary study of the rock mass along its route cannot be ignored because it is necessary, first of all, even in the first phase of the design, to consider the various aspects: functional, environmental, social, economic, etc. . However, the fundamental part is given by the behavior of the geological formations, also in relation to water, which must be studied and analyzed both from a geological and geotechnical point of view. These are the most important factors to consider both in the design and construction phase of a tunnel. In particular:
Foto di una galleria in costruzione / Photo of a gallery under construction - crossing of faults and milonitized areas with the presence of fluid-plastic soil; - strong floods of water; - gas inflows. These are the situations that can arise and cause the interruption of the excavation progress operations for weeks and / or months, remembering that in the past, often similar situations, have caused the blockage and also the loss of the TBM. a)- Land survey In the same way as for the other works necessary in the construction of a tunnel, as for the geotechnical studies for the calculation of the support, the choice of equipment, the choice of the method of the set of methods of soil treatment is based on both the investigation that is carried out in situ, both from the information obtained from the samples of the carrots examined in the laboratory. The investigation must include the following three phases: 1. a)- geological study; 2. a)- geotechnical study; 3. a). hydrogeological study of the area. a.1) - Geological survey The geological recognition must include the general geology of the area with its tectonic characteristics, the determination of the types of cracks, the planes of discontinuity, the inclinations, the areas with little resistance, so that through the injection procedures an excellent interruption of these areas of weathered rocks. To this end, the contributions of petrography (1) and sedimentology (2) are particularly important, which allow to frame the geological environment of the material formation. However, the geological structure is one of the factors that most affect the stability of a tunnel excavation. In particular, in the presence of folded and stratified rocks, the position of the layers conditions the different behavior modes with respect to the stability of the tunnel itself, depending on the following factors:
a. position of the structure with respect to the tunnel section; b. direction of the stratigraphy with respect to the axis of the tunnel; c. type of folds (syncline or anticline).
Fig. 1 - Resina (schiuma) organo minerale, altamente reattiva, bicomponente, per il riempimento di vuoti e cavità in terreni stratificati e rocce / Organic mineral foam, fire resistant, excellent chemical stability and mechanicl resistance (Type SILEX-330-FOAM produced by CHEMIX [*] ) a.2) - Geotechnical survey The geotechnical investigations carried out through drilling consist in the recovery of soil / rock cores and samples obtained from the boreholes. Together with the set of drilling data and piezometric levels, their main purpose is to determine the characteristics of the rock mass or the granulometric class of soils / rocks and to fix the level of groundwater present along the tunnel construction path. This is one of the major factors affecting the geotechnical behavior of materials. However, these investigations must be supplemented by geotechnical laboratory tests on samples extracted in such a way as not to alter the characteristics of the melted rocks. a.3) - Hydrogeological survey The investigation of the presence of groundwater is directed towards the chemical study of the water itself or its quality, the determination of the piezometric levels and the evaluation of the permeability of soils and / or rock masses. It is important to remember that the presence of underground water or interstitial water at high pressure greatly favors the development of deformation phenomena and the pressure of the mass. This is confirmed by the effects of drainage in rock masses, where it is often done through a pilot hole or a side tunnel dug in advance. b) - Injection into the ground Injection (3), as a system to improve and treat the soil, is today one of the most used methods in all types of civil works and especially in underground ones. It consists of the process through which you want to inject a fluid (suspensions, solutions, expanded mixtures) into the ground at a certain pressure, obtaining, by filling the cracks and rocks, moving the existing material and replacing or forming a mixture with the ground original, an improvement in the mechanical (resistance and deformability) and hydraulic (permeability) characteristics of porous solid bodies, cracks or large cavities in the area to be treated or in silt-clayey intercalations in permeable soils. The injection is made with materials ranging from pure cement with water, a mixture of cement with cement or clay, chemical products with a fixed-time reaction, pozzolans and combinations of all these products with other insertions such as sand as an element of charge.
The main purpose of the injection of a cement and / or resinous mixture is to facilitate the mechanism for transferring the load of the rock mass to the anchor. The functionality of a blend is dependent on numerous factors such as: - pumpability; - ability to maintain good mechanical characteristics in the event of an increase in the Water / Cement ratio (in the case of a cement mixture); - consistency, stability and ability to stay in the hole; - stability without separation effects (liquid / inert); - expandability (resinous mixture); - development of resistance at a given temperature within a desired time. However, the object of this article is to illustrate the use of resinous products and / or mixtures.

c) - Brief summary of the consolidation intervention in a fault zone Today, with the experience gained over the years, in the field of tunnel construction, a new generation of resins have been formulated from reactive injections with and without water, which allow to block the water, penetrate into the shale formations by increasing the cohesion of the ground so as to block the subsidence of the excavation face. As is known, the sudden "arrival" in the tunnel of an enormous quantity of incoherent materials gives rise to serious manifestations of instability, such as the collapse of the excavation face, with the possible extension of the phenomenon many times up to the surface (creation of a cavity, the so-called “cavity”), causing at the same time the advancement stop of the mechanized excavation, carried out by means of a full section mechanical cutter with TBM or EPB-Shield head shield [*]. Today, to solve this big problem, we can count on a wide range of new materials for the ground stabilization of the excavation face to be applied according to the operating phases illustrated below.
Fig. 3 - Esempio di pre-trattamento del fronte di scavo a seguito di collasso del terreno / Example of pretreatment of the excavation face with fiberglass elemets following collapse of the ground (Grandori, Romualdi,2004) c.1) - Operational phases of the excavation face I will describe the methods and materials to be used to solve the problem illustrated in exemplary form in Figure 2. 1. collapse of the rock with the possibility of a vertical or sub-vertical release (cavity); 2. at this point the TBM machine is automatically stopped and moved backwards in order to allow precontainment of the material coming with the Spritz-Beton method; 3. a first containment action is carried out, some exploratory holes are made and at the same time the TBM machine is cleaned; 4. after having stabilized in a first phase the collapsed material in front of the excavation face and having identified the void (cavity), the injection holes with a diameter of 40 mm can be drilled at an angle of approximately 45 ° with respect to the axis of the tunnel and of variable length from 4 to 20 m; 5. subsequently, in this phase, a resinous mixture is injected to block the material in the discontinuity, it expands (up to 30/40 times) and matures quickly, transforming itself from liquid into a rigid closed-cell polyurethane foam. The characteristics of strength and density will be maintained over time. The resin can also flow up to 25/50 meters from the mixing point. Resinous mixtures give the soil: - a reduced permeability with an increase in the stability of the excavation face; - a property of plastic deformation of the ground, simultaneously exerting a uniform pressure on the support which favors the support of the excavation face; - reduced abrasiveness of the soil in correspondence with the rotary head of the tiller and / or the excavated soil also in the vicinity of the loading auger, facilitating the excavation operation (resulting soil / rock); - a reduced cohesiveness and / or stickiness in the presence of an excavation face in rather rigid clay material (clay excavation debris often stops the advancement of the cutter and at the same time of the auger loading the spoil, in this case it is injected on the face of the excavation a conditioning foaming agent that forms a film around the debris particles preventing them from coagulation). 6. at this point the TBM is able to continue drilling through the stabilized material, as if it were rock. Obviously the situations that may arise are the most varied and each one will require a specific solution (area to be treated, method and depth of injection); for example, it may not be possible to move the machine backwards before having stabilized the ground, to avoid excessive incoming of material, or there may be sudden and unforeseen water flows which could also partially damage the electric motors of the tiller.
Fig. 4 - Illustrazione grafica delle fasi operative / Graphic illustration of the operational phase c.2) - Description of the expansive polyurethane resin The polyurethane resin is a bi-component silicone-mineral-organic formulation, with high expansion capacity, low viscosity, excellent mechanical resistance and chemical stability; the particular characteristics of the product are those for the consolidation of rocks and friable soils, the filling of cracks and cavities, improving the cohesion of the soil as well as for conveying water in the groundwater areas. The irreversible reaction, after mixing the two components "A" and "B" of the polyurethane resin, occurs in a very short time (20-25' at + 20° C), with an expansion of the mass up to 30- 40 times the initial volume. The expansion factor, and consequently the consolidating power, is determined by the size of the cavities to be filled / sealed and by the injection pressure used. The presence of water (still or running), or adverse climatic conditions, do not significantly influence the course of the reaction, the product of which has a predominantly inorganic nature, self-extinguishing, and absolute non-toxicity and absence of polluting properties.

Intercettazione della faglia /Schematic representation of excavation near a fault. Interception of the fault. Unstable material: clay, sand, debris, ect. Based on what is illustrated in this first part, it is important to highlight that the meeting of hydrogeological conditions (sandy or clayey front) other than expected can cause the interruption of the excavation progress operations for several days; consequently, if a tunnel hypothetically crosses poor soil for 10% and for the remaining 90% excellent soils, the section with worse characteristics may require even half the time necessary for the excavation of the entire tunnel with a higher total cost of excavation than that foreseen in the planning stage. And to summarize it is necessary to predict, in terms of probability, the times and costs of excavation, on the basis of our statistical knowledge of the parameters that characterize the presence of these different geomechanical anomalies without forgetting that to a large extent they depend on the (random) distributions and on the characteristics rocks crossed. d) - Brief summary of the consolidation intervention in a fault area in the presence of large water ingress Another of the most important aspects during the excavation phases of a blind hole tunnel in a fault zone are the water flows whose presence, many times, has not been identified by the boreholes. In addition to causing discomfort in the work environment, these cause instability, especially in difficult terrain. It is therefore necessary to adopt particular measures such as the immediate stop of the cutter, make investigative holes to get information on the nature of the material and the extent of the fault zone, then proceed with a waterproofing and consolidation through injections, of sub-horizontal holes radial pattern (nr. 8 ÷ 10 holes, inclined from 3° ÷ 12°), of one-component hydro-reactive polyurethane resin type PU8402-FOAM [**] (or a modified formulation called type PU-8408-FOAM [* *]) and then try to stabilize the landslide front by inserting and injecting the resin (foam) mineral organ such as SILEX-330-FOAM [**]. APPROACH PHASE WITH RADIAL PERFORATION AND INJECTION

The peculiarity of this new PU-8408-FOAM [**] type product is that during injection if the resin comes into contact with water, it increases in volume, if it does not find water, it hardens without foaming and at the same time it pushes the porous material into the innermost layers forming an impermeable and compact layer of variable thickness. Furthermore, the presence of several extended faults and if there is a high tendency of the front to collapse, in addition to what has been previously described, it is necessary to create a protective umbrella for consolidation of the front up to and beyond 3 meters by intervening on the healthy rock, injecting the type product SILEX-330-FOAM [**] and if necessary the SILEX-304-STONE type product - non-expansive - [**] which, thanks to its high fluidity, the latter resin is able to penetrate even through cracks of a few hundred microns in amplitude. In fact, the mixture of a resinous nature tends to follow the major cracks, where the pressure losses are less high, to the detriment of the minor cracks which remain open. To solve this, it is necessary to stop the injection for at least 5 minutes, wait for the already injected product to catalyze and repeat the treatment until the rejection pressure is reached.

d.1) - Some considerations on the injection of polyurethane foam type "PU-8402-FOAM" to block the water on the excavation face The range of polyurethane products allows the structural consolidation of a large part of the land, but the use of one or other product must be evaluated on site according to the geo-morphological characteristics encountered. As already mentioned, since most of the products are bi-components, they must be injected by means of special pumps with a static mixer in the head. The component supply pipes, which are separated, can be several meters long, as long as the pump has sufficient pressure. Furthermore, as mentioned above, the product type "PU-8402-FOAM" [**], being a single-component product that reacts only in the presence of water or moist soil, having a very long pot-life (even for several days, if stored in a dry place), there are no limits of use, subject to sufficient pumping pressure, to the length of the injection pipes.
It should be borne in mind that many of the aforementioned products have been studied and formulated precisely for the control of water inflows in tunnels, mines and underground works in general.

Probe drillhole Fig. 8 - Lo schizzo illustra la risoluzione e l'avanzamento di un caso reale per la presenza di grandi quantità di acqua in un ammasso roccioso di gneeiss / The sketch illustrates the resolution and progress of a real case for the presence of large quantities of water in a rock mass of gneeiss I repeat, the "PU-8402-FOAM" type product is a polyurethane resin formulation designed specifically for the rapid blocking of water during the excavation phase with TBM-EPB cutters. When the formulation comes into contact with water, a chemical reaction rapidly occurs which leads to the formation of a closed cell consolidating foam, characterized by absolute impermeability and chemical stability. I point out that during practical applications on site, to allow the advancement of the shield, even in difficult soils and with strong water flows, the expansion factor is linked to the quantity of catalyst introduced (since the product type "PU-8402 -FOAM "is a single-component product that reacts only in the presence of water; if there is no water, it remains stable, in the form of a gel, for several years), and consequently the blocking power of water is determined the quantity of water present and its pressure and the quantity of catalyst introduced (from 1 ÷ 5%). It is worth remembering that the presence of strong water flows can bring a TBM to its operating limits, especially if associated with a high solid transport of sand and sludge, putting all electrical parts at risk, as well as enhancing all the phenomena of instability related to it. The information described in this study experience led me to conclude that the consolidation and waterproofing injection interventions in an underground environment, especially those close to water sources intended for human consumption, require greater attention and knowledge in the choice of products to be injected. In fact, the problem of water flows in tunnels and in general in underground works, must not be seen only as a cause of delay or increase in costs during construction, but an action of rehabilitation and prevention of in order to make our intervention compatible with environmental protection.
e) – Conclusions The design and construction of a tunnel, as we have mentioned above in this memoir, is conditioned by multiple factors that can vary over time according to the evolution of knowledge prior to the final stages, thus allowing, many times, to adapt the project to the conditions geological-techniques that gradually meet. The convenience of carrying out consolidation interventions, to be defined according to the geological characteristics and also by the excavation methods and methods, are the fundamental tool for maintaining the integrity of the core at the face and allowing the advancement in a vehicle that has not already collapsed . The study of the stability conditions of the excavation face is particularly important for tunnels, especially near the surface and in difficult terrain, and therefore represents a complex problem, which can be rigorously studied by three-dimensional numerical modeling. A purely analytical approach to the front stability problem involves the use of the limit analysis theorems of the theory of plasticity, in order to determine an upper and a lower limit of the collapse load. However, as per knowledge on the subject, we know that during an excavation phase different types of resinous chemical mixtures (expansive or not) can be adopted, both in the pre-grouting and post-grouting phase (4), depending on the purpose and the treatment which will be deemed more suitable. I would like to continue to underline that the series of chemical foams described above can be superimposed by alternating different cycles of perforation and treatment, remaining unaltered over time, after the hardening or setting phase of each product (figs. 7 and 8). The important thing is to know that the execution methods of the injection influence the result in terms of chemical-physical and mechanical properties, in fact the latter increase as the filling rate of the voids increases, which is directly linked to the drilling mesh, to the pressure, the type of mixture introduced and the duration of the injection. Furthermore, the injection of these specific mixtures almost always implies a localized modification of the soil (both in the consolidation and waterproofing phases. In fact, the injection end pressure is a parameter directly related to the mechanical resistance given to the soil), even if it is necessary pay particular attention to the above-mentioned "foams", pointing out that they do not pollute the ground, especially in the presence of aquifers. In general, it is necessary to remember that the study of the environmental impact of injection treatments is essential, without disregarding the case-by-case analysis of the components of the "foams" used and their mutual interactions with the constituents of the soil. The choice between the different injection / waterproofing / consolidation systems is essentially dictated by the geotechnical and geomechanical characteristics of the soil and the cost / benefit ratio of the intervention. I want to conclude the discussion of this topic illustrated so far, which may seem trivial even in stating that preliminary investigations are needed, both in the design and construction phases, and that the application of injection procedures, types and the characteristics of mixtures, such as the application methodologies, are essential in the construction of a tunnel. However, I promise to continue in subsequent articles, to investigate the problem, in particular: the excavation techniques and those of consolidation where, every single phase of intervention, assumes an essential importance for the final result of the work. ….oo0oo….
