Stacie is back in the Laman Teen Center! She worked in the Teen Center from 2015 to 2020 and was here when the Teen Center first opened! But her history with Laman didn't begin there, she's been coming to the library since she was 4 years old
If you ' ve seen our "It's Corn" video on TikTok, you ' re enjoying her handiwork. Stacie is proud of that video, along with her long lasting book display inspired by Broadway shows that is still featured in the Teen Center.
When she isn't working at the library (or her second job), she's a semi trained opera singer that enjoys playing the piano, crafting, reading, and playing on the Nintendo Switch.
Some of her favorite genres are historical fiction, fantasy, and YA. She recommends Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, and Nimona by Noelle Stephenson. Her favorite movies are The Chronicles of Narnia, Ready Player One, While You Were Sleeping, and The Little Prince (2015).
We are so glad to have Stacie back in the North Little Rock Public Library System!
BOO!! Hmm, is that a little too cliché? I don’t know; I haven’t been a ghost that long. Anyway, as a ghost, I find I’m often expected to do something scary, and I always feel like a disappointment in that regard. I mean, I’m just an amorphous blob that floats around and moans. It’s not like I can turn into a bat or a wolf or something I don’t even have chains to rattle. (Note to library’s purchasing department: Please get me some chains. That would be rad.) However, since I’m a ghost who’s lucky enough to haunt a library, I do get to read and watch a bunch of scary stuff, and now that it’s spooky season, I thought I’d share a couple of my favorite fright-fests.
My book pick is Paul Tremblay’s A Head Full of Ghosts. (Yeah, I’ll admit it: I’m partial to the title.) In this creepy tale, the Bennett family finds itself caught in a web of fear and uncertainty as their eldest daughter, 14year old Marjorie, begins to show signs of severe mental illness. However, the Bennetts’ father, Paul, who has recently reconnected with his Roman Catholic roots, suspects something far darker and more demonic is to blame for Majorie’s disturbing outbursts. Things only get worse when the cash strapped family invites a reality TV crew into their home to document the strange events. This is The Exorcist for the 21st century, and you’ll want to read it nestled deep down under the covers Fortunately for me, I came pre equipped with a sheet!
If you’d prefer to pop in a flick, try director Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook Essie Davis gives a raw, mesmerizing performance as Amelia, a newly single mother living in a house she can no longer afford and trying her best to raise her son, Samuel, who is on the autism spectrum. Samuel is a sweet, curious child, but his constant need for attention and loud, often destructive behavior have started to fray Amelia’s already strained nerves. When Samuel becomes obsessed with a creepy pop up book called Mister Babadook, Amelia feels the book’s sense of doom and its nightmarish main character seep into her own reality. We know something terrible is going to happen, but when will it happen, and how terrible will it be?
(Also: Don’t be surprised if you find yourself wanting to dress up as the Babadook for Halloween this year. If, of course, you’re not already planning on going out as me, the Library Ghost.)
Okay, that’s it. Gotta get back to my regularly scheduled floating and moaning. Happy Halloween! And remember the immortal words of Haddonfield’s Sheriff Brackett: “Everybody’s entitled to a one good scare!”
Join us at Argenta Library for a free opening reception of Diane Harper's exhibit, Queen of Her Domain, during Third Friday Art Walk, from 5 to 8 PM on October 21.
Make sure to pick up your Art Walk Passport at any of the participating galleries. If you visit all of the galleries, you are entered to win a gift card to an Argenta business.
The show continues with free admission in the library gallery through November 10.
Diane Harper is a mixed media artist who teaches through her studio as a member of the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. Her work expresses themes of identity and belonging. In Queen of Her Domain, she uses a variety of traditional and non traditional materials to explore the feeling of being rooted in a community.
"My previous solo exhibition delved into the feeling of being uprooted and disconnected while exploring the questions of what is home and who am I in relation to the past. It was a life marked with feeling adrift, always moving, always anticipating somewhere else, and always having to recreate myself. Those experiences brought me to where I am but does not define who I have become," she said.
