Dal Santuario di S. Francesco d’Assisi a Piediluco al Faggio di san Francesco Partendo dal Santuario di S. Francesco d’Assisi (370 m slm) al centro di Piediluco si prosegue, tra pioppi e salici, lungo il lago fino al centro canottieri; da qui s’imbocca la S.S. Ternana in direzione Rieti per circa 500 m, fino a un fontanile. Si prosegue sulla sterrata che inizia proprio sulla fontana e dopo circa 50 m sulla destra si incontra una torre di pietra (difronte la vista panoramica di Labro), si prosegue ancora in direzione Pacce per circa 1 km fino a un bivio dal quale si prosegue a destra per circa 300 m fino alle piscine. Lasciando le piscine sulla sinistra, si prosegue sulla sterrata che svolta leggermente a destra e in salita, e dopo circa 1,5 km tra ginepri e roverelle conduce alle porte di Labro all’altezza del fontanile. Si attraversa il centro storico proseguendo fino alla caserma dei CC, all’incrocio con la strada provinciale da Terni a Leonessa. Si prosegue in salita su una sterrata visibile al centro dell’incrocio, che prosegue per circa 2 km con tratti anche asfaltati, fino alle porte di Morro Reatino all’altezza del Cimitero. Qui ci s’immette sulla S.S. per Leonessa in direzione Morro Reatino, per circa 150 m fino alla fontana in curva, lasciandola sulla sinistra e proseguendo su una strada secondaria che dopo circa 500 m incrocia di nuovo la S.S. per Leonessa. Percorsa la statale per poche decine di metri e arrivati all’incrocio con un ristorante, si prosegue sulla stradina secondaria in salita, adiacente a una casa cantoniera. Superato un tornante sterrato, si arriva alla pineta sulla sinistra. La strada spiana un po’, prima di salire di nuovo per arrivare all’incrocio con la strada sterrata proveniente dal Cepparo e diretta al Faggio di San Francesco. Si costeggia la strada su un sentiero di faggi e roverelle per un breve tratto in direzione nord, poi si continua sul sentiero fino ad arrivare a una croce sulla sommità di un colle. Dopo la croce si prosegue in leggera discesa sul sentiero transennato in legno a valle, fino al Faggio di san Francesco (1.090 m slm).

From the Sanctuary of St. Francis at Piediluco to the Beech Tree of St. Francis The walk begins at the Sanctuary of St. Francis of Assisi (370 metres above sea level) in the centre of Piediluco and continues through the poplars and willow trees, along the lake side as far as the rowing club; from here the walk picks up the S.S. Ternana road for around 500 metres in the direction of Rieti, as far as a water fountain, from where the trail then proceeds along the dirt road. Approximately 50m up the road on the right is a stone tower, looking out over Labro, and from there the walk continues towards Pacce for around 300 m as far as the swimming pools. Leaving behind the pools on the left, the dirt road then bends slightly to the right as it begins to climb, and after around 1.5 km, amongst the junipers and oaks, the walk reaches Labro, just beside the fountain. Passing through the historic centre of the town, the walk reaches the police barracks, on the crossroads of the road from Terni to Leonessa. The trail then continues uphill along the dirt road that can be seen at the centre of the crossroads. The road is paved in stretches and climbs for around 2 km, until it reaches the outskirts of Morro Reatino, near the Cemetery. From here the walk follows the main road to Leonessa in the direction of Morro Reatino, for around 150 m, until it reaches a fountain on the bend, and leaves the main road behind to continue along a smaller road, which then meets up with the S.S. Leonessa road again after 500m. A few dozen metres along the main road, at the restaurant by the crossroads, the smaller road continues uphill, passing alongside a roadmender’s house. After passing an unsurfaced bend, the route reaches a pine forest on the left. The road then levels out for a while, before rising uphill again until it meets the dirt road from Cepparo, which leads to the Beech Tree of St. Francis. A footpath lined with oaks and junipers runs in a northerly direction along the side of the road for a short time, then the path continues until it arrives at a cross at the top of the hill. After the cross it is a gradual downhill walk, until the path reaches the valley and the Beech Tree of St. Francis (1.090 metres above sea level). 7

Dal Faggio di san Francesco al Santuario di Poggio Bustone Dopo la visita al Faggio di san Francesco si risale il sentiero sulla scalinata che porta alla chiesa in pietra, lasciandosela alle spalle e si prosegue sul prato fino in fondo, dove al centro di due alberi inizia la discesa su un sentiero caratteristico e un po’ insidioso per il fondo irregolare e scivoloso e ripido. Il sentiero termina sulla sterrata che proviene da Rivodutri, proseguendo in discesa s’incrocia il sentiero sterrato che conduce a Poggio Bustone. Si attraversa un ruscello che in funzione della stagione è da guadare, dopo circa 2 km. Abbandonata la sterrata, per ripiegare sul sentiero che scende sulla sinistra verso i ruderi di Villa Santori e di qui a Villa Roma, si prosegue per il cimitero, poi per il centro storico di Poggio Bustone, superato il quale s’intravede il Santuario di Poggio Bustone (Convento di San Giacomo) dove, in un paesaggio nuovamente popolato da olivi e roverelle, si giunge dopo circa 20.5 km e 7.5 ore di cammino.
From the Beech Tree of St. Francis to the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone Following a visit to the Beech Tree of St. Francis, the path continues uphill, up a flight of steps leading to a stone church. Past the church, the walk continues across the grass, where, between two trees, it starts to descend along a steep pathway that can be slightly tricky at times, thanks to its rough and slippery surface. The path finishes on the unsurfaced road from Rivodutri, and continues downhill until it meets the dirt track leading to Poggio Bustone. After around 2 km, the walk reaches a stream, which, depending on the season, should be crossed with caution. Leaving behind the dirt track, the walk picks up a pathway that leads down to the left towards the ruins of Villa Santori and then on to Villa Roma. From there the walk passes the cemetery before crossing through the centre of Poggio Bustone, until it is possible to catch sight of the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone (Convent of St. James) which, in a landscape dotted with olives and oaks, is finally reached after around 20.5 km and 7.5 hours of walking.

Dal Santuario di Poggio Bustone al Santuario de La Foresta Dal Santuario di Poggio Bustone (Convento di San Giacomo 818 m slm) si ridiscende, attraverso il paese, in direzione Bandita. Percorsi circa 2 km, s’incrocia a sinistra un sentiero che s’inoltra in coltivi sistemati in larghi terrazzamenti, attraversa la località Poeta, segue per 1 km una strada comunale e si dirige verso San Liberato per una percorrenza complessiva di 5 km. Dopo il paese, si lascia la strada comunale in direzione località Fonte di San Liberato: da qui, un sentiero in leggera salita conduce all’abitato di Cantalice attraversando il centro storico. Superato Cantalice Superiore, il cammino continua sulla strada provinciale Vazia-Cantalice, fino alla località di Madonna della Pace. Abbandonata la provinciale, si segue una strada comunale che percorre il crinale di un colle. Il cammino attraversa in leggera discesa i centri di Case Colasanti, San Gregorio e Civitella, offrendo alla vista, a est, il massiccio del Terminillo, e a ovest la Piana Reatina, con in primo piano i laghi Lungo e Ripasottile. Continuando la discesa verso il Santuario de La Foresta, s’incontra la Chiesa di San Felice da Cantalice. Da qui mancano 2.600 m di una strada sterrata che va percorsa fino a valle, dove s’incontra Via dell’Acquamartina. Ancora, verso monte per circa 500 m, prima di svoltare a destra per percorrere l’ultimo tratto in leggera salita. Superato un casolare sulla sinistra, dopo aver percorso in tutto 13 km in circa 3 ore, si giunge al Santuario de La Foresta (550 m slm).

From the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone to La Foresta Sanctuary From the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone (Convent of St. James 818 metres above sea level), the walk moves downhill and passes through the town in the direction of Bandita. After about two km there is a path on the left that leads through terraced fields, crosses the town of Poeta, and continues for one kilometre on a paved road towards San Liberato for a total distance of five kilometres. After the town, the road is left behind and the walk proceeds in the direction of Fonte di San Liberato. From here a path on a slight uphill climb leads to Cantalice and passes through its historical centre. From Cantalice Superiore, the Vazia-Cantalice provincial road is taken to Madonna della Pace. This road is then abandoned in order to follow another road that runs along the top of a hill. The walk now continues on a slight downhill descent and when crossing through the towns of Case Colasanti, San Gregorio and Civitella, one can admire Mount Terminillo to the east and the Rieti plain to the west with lakes Lungo and Ripasottile in the foreground. Continuing downhill towards La Foresta Sanctuary, the path encounters the church dedicated to St. Felice from Cantalice. At this point, the walk goes on for 2.600 metres along a dirt road until it reaches a valley where it crosses the Via dell’Acquamartina. The walk rises uphill for about 500 metres then a right turn leads to the last uphill stretch. On the left, just past a cottage, the walk reaches the Sanctuary of La Foresta (550 metres above sea level) after a total walking distance of about 13 kilometres, taking approximately three hours.

Dalla Chiesa di San Francesco a Rieti al Santuario di Fontecolombo Si parte dal centro della città di Rieti e dopo aver visitato la Chiesa di San Francesco, si giunge alla statua di San Francesco ubicata in via Cintia, nel piazzale di fianco alla Chiesa Cattedrale. Si percorre un primo tratto di 4 km in città, proseguendo su strada provinciale Tancia, fino alla località Macelletto. Si procede per 1.900 m (dislivello 160 m) quindi in direzione Fontecolombo su strada comunale e poi su sentiero, fino al Santuario di Fontecolombo (569 m slm) dopo circa un’ora di cammino.
From the Church of St. Francis in Rieti to the Sanctuary of Fontecolombo The walk begins from the Rieti city center and after visiting the Church of St. Francis, we reach the statue of St. Francis located in Via Cintia, in the square next to the Cathedral Church. After an initial stretch through the city of about 4 km, the route leaves the provincial road of Tancia, in Macelletto, and proceeds in the direction of Fonte Colombo on a paved road that later becomes a path. This stage of the journey is uphill for a rise of 160 mt and is 1.9 km long. It ends at the Sanctuary of Fontecolombo (569 metres above sea level) after about an hour’s walk.

Dal Santuario di Fontecolombo al Santuario di Greccio Da Fontecolombo si riparte in direzione dell’abitato di S. Elia, per un tratto di 2 km (dislivello 150 m - tempo di percorrenza 30’). Il cammino prosegue in leggera discesa, lasciando sulla destra la chiesa di S. Elia Profeta. Si attraversano belle e solitarie strade di campagna che corrono sulla sommità dei rilievi in direzione est-ovest verso l’abitato di Piani Poggio Fidoni. L’ampio panorama offre allo sguardo, sulla destra (verso Nord), la piana reatina. In direzione opposta scorrono le colline interne, con i centri di Poggio Fidoni, Morini, la Val Canera. La strada è parzialmente ombreggiata da piante di Roverella (Quercus pubescens) che ne delimitano la carreggiata. Superato l’abitato di Piani Poggio Fidoni, si transita per un breve tratto lungo la via Tancia e si entra in Val Canera, lasciando la strada provinciale per risalire in località Colle Posta da cui con un solo sguardo si domina tutta la Valle Santa: a sud la Val Canera; a nord la piana reatina, sovrastata a est dal monte Terminillo; a ovest l’abitato di Contigliano e in lontananza Greccio. Proseguendo, la strada attraversa le colline con un percorso di 2,5 km, caratterizzato da un leggero saliscendi, in larga parte ombreggiato da grandi Roverelle, che conduce fino a Contigliano, che accoglie il pellegrino con il vecchio borgo di Contigliano Alto, sovrastante l’abitato di più recente costruzione. Attraversato il paese, si prosegue per la località Piano, imboccando in leggera ascesa il sentiero Onnina (dall’omonima sorgente che sgorga in località Piano di Contigliano). Lungo l’itinerario è possibile fare tappa all’Abbazia di San Pastore, ove si giunge dopo un’ora e 30 minuti di cammino e 3,5 km di percorso. Lasciata l’Abbazia sulla destra, si percorre Via San Pastore che porterà a incrociare più volte la strada provinciale per Greccio. Dopo circa un’ora di cammino si arriva al Santuario di Greccio (629 m slm). Prima del parcheggio superiore del santuario, sulla destra parte un altro sentiero che attraversa il bosco e sale fino alla Cappelletta, sul Monte Lacerone (1.205 m). Qui san Francesco rimaneva in solitudine e in contemplazione, godendo dello splendido panorama della Valle Santa reatina. Tempo di percorrenza: più di 2 ore.
Santuario di Greccio Sanctuary at Greccio
From the Sanctuary of Fontecolombo to the Sanctuary at Greccio From Fontecolombo the walk proceeds in the direction of St. Elia. It takes about 30 minutes to walk the two kilometres and climb the 150 metres rise after St. Elia. The walk continues to the left of the church of St. Elia Profeta. A slightly downhill slope leads to the town of Piani Poggio Fidoni on country roads that run east to west along the tops of the hills. For long stretches the view is vast and spacious. On the right (looking north) it is possible to see the Rieti plain while the hills, including the towns of Poggio Fidoni, Morini, the Val Canera, etc., can be seen in the opposite direction. The road is shaded and lined by oaks. Having crossed through Piani Poggio Fidoni, the walk continues briefly along Via Tancia until it reaches Val Canera, where it leaves behind the provincial road and climbs uphill to Colle Posta. From here, there is a 360째 view across the entire Sacred Valley: to the south is Val Canera; to the north is the Rieti plain towered over by Mount Terminillo; to the west is the town of Contigliano and in the distance is Greccio and the Sanctuary. Continuing on, the road winds through the hills for 2.5 km. This stretch is characterized by slight ups and downs in large part shaded by majestic oaks. The path leads to Contigliano, where the pilgrim is greeted first by the ancient village of Contigliano Alto, rising above the more modern town. After passing through the village, the next stop is the town of Piano and here, on a slight uphill climb, the walk proceeds on the Onnina path (named after the spring that flows in Piano di Contigliano). Along the route, it is possible to stop off at the recently restored Abbey of St. Pastore, which is reached after 3.5 km, in around an hour and a half. With the Abbey on the right, the walk follows Via San Pastore, which crosses the provincial road for Greccio at various points. The Greccio Sanctuary (629 metres above sea level) is reached after about an hour. Just before the upper car park of the sanctuary, there is another path to the right, which crosses the wood and climbs up as far as the small chapel, on Mount Lacerone (1.205 metres). St. Francis spent time in solitude and contemplation here, enjoying the splendid panorama of the Sacred Reatine Valley that stretched before him. Walking time: just over 2 hours. 2 1

Dal Santuario di Greccio alla Riserva naturale dei laghi Lungo e Ripasottile Nella discesa dal Santuario di Greccio si segue il tracciato della strada provinciale fino ad incrociare la SP per Reopasto e si procede in direzione Terni. Percorsi circa 600 metri, si svolta in direzione di Montisola, si transita lungo un rettilineo delimitato da imponenti gelsi, si procede sulla destra fino a raggiungere il ponte di Terria sulla SP per Reopasto per l’attraversamento del Fiume Velino, in località Colle San Pastore. Si prende quindi a sinistra e si lascia la provinciale, proseguendo per località Settecamini, da cui, percorrendo via Settecamini, si raggiunge il centro visite della Riserva dei laghi Lungo e Ripasottile, ubicato in località Lanserra presso il fabbricato Idrovore.
From the Sanctuary at Greccio to the Nature Reserve of the Lungo and Ripasottile Lakes Walking downhill from the Sanctuary at Greccio, the path follows the provincial main road until it reaches the crossroads the provincial main road to Reopasto. From there it continues towards Terni. After approximately 600 m, is right turn for Montisola. From there turn left on to a straight path lined with mulberry trees and continue following the path on the right hand side until it reaches the Terria Bridge which crosses the Velino River, on the provincial road to Reopasto, in the village of Colle San Pastore. Turning right here and leaving the main road behind, the walk leads to the village of Settecamini, from where the via Settecamini leads to the visitors’ centre of the Nature Reserve of the Lungo and Ripasottile Lakes, located in the village of Lanserra, in the Idrovore building.

Riserva dei laghi Lungo e Ripasottile Nature Reserve of the Lungo and Ripasottile Lakes
Dalla Riserva naturale dei laghi Lungo e Ripasottile al Santuario di Poggio Bustone Si prosegue in direzione Ponte Crispolti, fino a incrociare la S.P. Ternana, da percorrere in direzione di Rieti; s’incrocia la strada provinciale di Ponte Crispolti, da percorrere in direzione Poggio Bustone. Da qui si devia su una strada comunale la cui carreggiata è delimitata da grandi querce (Quercus pubescens) che la ombreggiano. Il cammino prosegue in leggera salita in direzione di Borgo San Pietro (Frazione di Poggio Bustone). Arrivati nel piccolo centro, si transita per pochi metri sulla provinciale del Santuario di Poggio Bustone in direzione Poggio Bustone, per poi continuare il cammino verso la località denominata Bandita. La salita si fa ora più ripida: la distanza è di circa 2 km (Dislivello di 260 m). A due terzi dell’ascesa il sentiero s’inoltra nell’abitato di Poggio Bustone: da qui una serie di viuzze e scalinate conduce al santuario attraversando il paese.
From the Nature Reserve of the Lungo and Ripasottile Lakes to the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone The walk continues in the direction of Ponte Crispolti until it picks up the road for Ternana in the direction of Rieti. It then meets the provincial road of Ponte Crispolti, which is taken in the direction of Poggio Bustone. From here, the walk takes a detour onto a paved road lined and shaded by large oak trees (Quercus pubescens).The walk now becomes slightly uphill towards Borgo San Pietro (a hamlet of Poggio Bustone). Once inside the small village, it continues for a short while on the road for the Poggio Bustone Sanctuary towards Poggio Bustone, and then proceeds towards the town of Bandita. The slope becomes steeper here. The distance is about two kilometres and there is a rise of 260 metres. At two thirds of the way up, the path enters the town of Poggio Bustone. A series of narrow alleys and stairways lead through the town to the sanctuary.

Dal Santuario di Poggio Bustone al Sacro Speco Dal Santuario di Poggio Bustone (Convento di San Giacomo, 818 m slm), percorsi circa 200 m sulla sinistra si prende il sentiero n. 421 che indica Cima D’Arme; il sentiero è segnato con bandierine Rosso-Bianco-Rosso. Si sale al Sacro Speco (1.055 m slm) e si discende leggermente su scalini, per poi risalire su ripida salita agli Scogli di San Francesco (croce e piccola grotta).
From the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone to the Sacro Speco After about 200 metres from the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone (Convent of St. James, 818 metres above sea level), take path number 421 on the left with directions for Cima D’Arme. The path is marked with Red-WhiteRed flags. The walk goes uphill towards the Sacro Speco (1.055 metres above sea level) and then steps take you downhill only to rise again on a steep climb up to the Rocks of St. Francis (a cross and a small grotto). 3 3

Tempio votivo di San Francesco - Votive Temple of St. Francis
Dal Sacro Speco al Tempio votivo di San Francesco al Terminillo Si prosegue sempre in salita fino ai Prati di San Giacomo (1.301 m slm); da questa bellissima radura il sentiero incrocia la strada sterrata, che si percorre fino alla Sella di Cima D’Arme (1.395 m slm), per poi proseguire fino a Fonte Petrinara (1.419 m slm). Dalla Fonte si prende il sentiero n. 420 che conduce a Sella Monte Versanello (1.524 m slm); da qui si incrocia il sentiero n. 402 che si snoda sul seguente itinerario: Passo del Lupo (1.690 m slm) - Sella di Cantalice (1.545 slm) - Sella di Vall’Organo (1.850 m slm); da quest’ultima Sella si scende al Rifugio “La Fossa” (1.505 m slm) e su strada sterrata per circa 2,5 km in leggera salita si arriva a Pian de’ Valli e da qui al Tempio votivo di San Francesco (1.623 m slm).
From Cathedral of Rieti to the Sanctuary of Fontecolombo The walk resumes uphill until the Prati di San Giacomo (1.301 metres above sea level). At this beautiful clearing the walk becomes a dirt road that is taken until the Sella di Cima D’Arme (1.395 metres). It continues on to the Fonte Petrinara (1.419 metres). From the Fonte, path number 420 leads to the Sella Monte Versanello (1.524 metres) at which point path number 402 winds along the following route: Passo del Lupo (1.690 metres) - Sella di Cantalice (1.545 metres) - Sella di Vall’Organo (1.850 metres). From here, the walk proceeds towards the “La Fossa” Refuge (1.505 metres) and then onto a dirt road for about 2.5 kilometres that leads to the Pian de’ Valli and then to the Votive Temple of St. Francis (1.623 metres above sea level). 3 5
