The Ripples!

From The General Manager

Spring arrives this month and your association is busy preparing for another prime season in Lakewood. Work at the Cove location continues with site preparation for the new Pavilion. The LPOA maintenance staff has spent the last several months pruning trees and cleaning up planting beds. Last fall, maintenance prepared the common ground along our parkways to prevent weeds this spring. Much of that work has been altered by the AT&T cable installation. We will try to renovate these bare areas as quickly as possible after the contractors leave the area. There will be some weeds in these areas this spring because we need to grow grass so we will not be putting down a pre-emergent application. We will spray the weeds later in the season when the grass has matured. We do look forward to seeing our members out and about walking, running, bicycling, boating and simply enjoying the Lakewood lifestyle.

From the Boardroom Phil Mall Board President

Parts of Program 2020 continue to advance as your association positions itself for the decades to come. At the February LPOA Board of Directors Meeting: • The Board wanted to have more time to review the design of the Cove Aquatic Pavilion and called for a Special Board meeting on February 16th to discuss the design and materials. This was done in an effort to get construction started so the Pavilion could be completed in time for the start of swim season. Once the design and materials are approved staff will get bids for construction. Design calls for 6” thick concrete roofs over the restrooms, office and snack bar so they can serve as a tornado shelter should the need arise. In the event construction is not complete by Memorial Day, contingency plans for restroom trailers are in place. • The old Cove Clubhouse is gone and the survey work for the aquatic pavilion is 95% complete. The main concourse is in the process of being modified and the grounds reshaped. • Survey work for the East Lake Marina is 85% complete and bids for construction have gone out. • Survey work for the East Lake Pool is 100% complete. We anticipate having design work for the 6 lap, zero entry pool, and the aquatic pavilion completed in the March/ April timeframe. • When various architect renderings and concepts are available, they will be posted for all to see at the LPOA offices. As a community it is important to maintain a strong sense of optimism, especially during tumultuous times. It projects a positive feeling that is welcoming to old and new residents alike. An optimistic outlook for the future builds a sense of community, whereas pessimism brings us down and can be divisive. Program 2020 is a positive look to the future. Modern and first class amenities send a signal that our Association is an attractive and viable community that plans for the future. This benefits us all. Current and potential residents will be motivated to be an active part of this great Lakewood community because they see a dynamic community, a community with modern amenities that serves all who live here. I would like to conclude this article with a thank you to all who have adjusted to all the changes we are experiencing and will experience. To the bridge groups, the Scouts, the yoga folks and others who have adjusted their activities and relocated to the Oaks with grace and good humor, thank you. A special thanks to the Lasers and Cruisers Swim Teams for adjusting their 2016 swim practice schedules. I know it wasn’t easy. To all, your understanding and patience is sincerely appreciated. Phil

Registration forms and additional information will be available on the team website at: http://lakewoodswimteam.webs.com Swim Team is available for kids age 7-18 living in Lakewood. It is expected that the child can swim the length of the pool (any stroke) – it does not have to be “pretty”! Generally, kids who live on the "west side", within the geographical boundaries of the Lee's Summit School District, join the Cruisers. Kids who live on the "east side", within the geographical boundaries of the Blue Springs School District, join the Lasers. However, membership on either team is open to all Lakewood kids. Kids younger than 7 can join if they are swim-ready and if a parent remains with them, on deck, at all times that they are at practice. Practice will begin on May 31. Please note: a new practice schedule will be in place to accommodate both teams at the Cove pool during our transition summer. We realize that the new schedule will not be ideal for everyone, but it allows for both teams to practice at the Cove until the new East Lake Pool is complete. Swim meets are generally held on Wednesday evenings. Cruisers and Lasers alternate between home meets (Lakewood Cove pool) or away meets. Our league is made up of 8 teams – all located in the Lee’s Summit area. 2016 Swim Team schedule is as follows:  June 8  June 15  June 22  June 29  July 6  July 13  July 15-16 – Championship Weekend  July 17 – End of Season Party/Awards Banquet Championship weekend will be held in Lakewood, on Friday, July 15 (ages 11 and over) and Saturday, July 16 (ages 10 and under). AN INTERVIEW WITH JUDGE TOBIN Judge Tobin, you served on active duty in the Army when many of your generation found ways to avoid service. How do you see your experience in the military – in Iraq, Germany and Japan – benefiting you in your role as a Lee’s Summit municipal judge?

“First of all, I feel privileged to have gone through basic combat training and deployments around the world with a true cross section of American men and women – some had graduate degrees and others lacked a high school diploma. I learned to work with, be taught by and in some cases be commanded by all kinds of people. I learned respect for all my fellow citizen soldiers no matter their gender, color, creed, nationality or accent. Military service also taught me a lot about myself, strengthened my love for this country and gave me a strong affinity for our brotherhood in arms. I rejoined the Army in a reserve status after the Iran hostage crisis because I felt I could not stand idly by while my fellow citizens and soldiers were imprisoned by a foreign power. After more than 33 years of combined service to our country, I have a great respect for the American system of justice and a compassion for my fellow citizens under duress. And feel that my military knowledge, experience and sense of fairness benefits everyone who comes into my court, particularly veterans in crisis.” NOTE: Judge Tobin is the recipient of the Bronze Star, a Combat Action Badge and a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Badge.

Digital Ripples With the rising cost of printing and postage, and the competition and decline of printed advertising, we thought it best to take a hard look at Lakewood’s official magazine and form of communication, The Ripples. Many publications are going to a digital format. For now, The Ripples will continue to be sent to the printers each month and delivered to your mailbox. The Ripples will also continue to be published online, and is in fact being digitally published in a more attractive format. Members have the option to “opt out” of The Ripples mailing, and can simply receive the copy online. I urge every one of our members who don’t read the printed magazine, or would like to save a tree to sign the “opt out” agreement, and receive a digital copy online. You’ll still get the great publication, without the paper to dispose of. If you are interested in only getting the Digital Ripples, please send an email to Tim@lpoa.com and we will get you started on the process.

The Ripples!

The LPOA budget contains an item to fund the Lakewood fireworks display. Paid from those budget funds are the contract for the display (including shooter), LS Police Department stand-by, as required by LS Codes, and various miscellaneous items needed each year. Any donations made to this fund will be added to the budgeted funds so a bigger fireworks show can be held. Each LPOA member or company who donates to the fund will be recognized in the Ripples! Below is a form that you will be seeing in the Ripples from now until May. If you are interested in donating, please fill out the form and attach it with your donation (preferably check). You can bring in or mail your donation to 651 NE St. Andrew’s Circle, Lee’s Summit, MO 64064. Any donation received will be set aside and used only for the fireworks fund. Donations can only be accepted through May 31st so LPOA can enter into an agreement in order to secure the company and shooter for our show. If you have any questions, contact Sean Bachtel at 373.4326 or sean@lpoa.com

Eblast Information

Many families in Lakewood are missing out on a great deal of timely information from Lakewood Communications regarding events, reminders, etc. Tim is in charge of Communications and sends out the “eblasts” to those on the email list. So many in our neighborhood believe they are signed up for it and are not, therefore they are missing out on important i nformation. We put out a weekly newsletter called “Whats Happening in Lakewood”. The only way you will receive this email is to join our e-blast list. So don’t miss out and sign up today! It is simple to register your email, just send an email to Tim (Tim@lpoa.com) and let him know you would like to be added. You will be added to the email list and get great information, through the “eblasts”. The information we send is very helpful, professional and timely. We don’t fill your inbox, we just send enough emails to keep you informed.
