The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce is bringing back the tradition of decorating the city in blue lights for the holiday season!
When the Lakewood Colonial Center was built by Norton Clapp in 1937, it was a pretty big deal.It was the first suburban “mall” west of the Mississippi. It is rumored that Clapp’s first wife Mary Cordelia Davis’s favorite color was blue. Hence, the decorating of the Colonial Center with blue lights during the Christmas season began. Mrs. Clapp inspired owners of nearby shopping centers and along Gravelly Lake Drive to follow the color scheme, and in the late 1930’s through the 1970's, blue bulbs symbolized the holiday spirit of community businesses.
If you have a business in the city limits of Lakewood, you qualify to receive FREE C-9 LED blue light strings long as supplies last. Call or email us to sign up to get your lights today!

After dark, you’ll notice Lakewood’s Nights of Lights — beautiful blue lights around the Lakewood business district. In the late 1930’s through the 70's, blue lights symbolized the holiday spirit of our community businesses. But in 2009, the lights took on new meaning, when four Lakewood police officers were gunned down at a Parkland coffee shop. Blue lights now blaze throughout the city in memory of the four officers who lost their lives, as well as a show of community nostalgia of our Christmases past.

Roughly 7,000 people will line the route specifically to see the floats and displays as they make their way to Lakewood City Hall.
The parade runs from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The parade ends at Lakewood City Hall in time for the countdown to light the city Christmas tree.
Also on the 10th, you can step back into time and eavesdrop at historic Fort Steilacoom, as living historians re-enact the Christmas of 1863, highlighting how the holiday season might have been celebrated in these buildings nearly 160 years ago.
Re-enactors will gather in candlelight to talk, sing, dance and dine as our predecessors did in these buildings nearly 160 years ago. Visitors from 2021 will walk past the scenes and witness them as if they are spirits from the future.
The Lakewood Playhouse, the cultural heart of our diverse community, creates engaging and entertaining theatre celebrating the human experience. For your holiday viewing pleasure, Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol will show through December 19.
If you don't already have enough to choose from, a final option is to visit ZooLIGHTS. Come enjoy Point Defiance Zoo, transformed into a colorful winter wonderland with over 800,000 lights. It's simply magical for young and old alike!

Pack your spirit of adventure and travel through time in Lakewood.
Arrive in Lakewood, WA., and visit historic Fort Steilacoom. First manned by soldiers of Company M, 1st Artillery Regiment beginning in August 1849, the fort's first buildings were built on land leased from the Hudson’s Bay Company. Exhibits include: Commanding Officer’s Quarters, Laundress Quarters, Enlisted Barracks, Sutler Store and Junior Officers Quarters.
Also on the grounds of Fort Steilacoom, is the imposing Western State Hospital. First named the "Insane Asylum of Washington," it opened in 1871, for the mentally ill, with 15 men and 6 women patients. As time progressed treatments ranged from insulin therapy and electric shock therapy to frontal lobotomies. Now psychotropic drugs, counseling and behavior modification therapies are in use today.
Just across the street lies the 340 acre, Fort Steilacoom Park which began as a farm in 1844. In 1871, as part of the hospital s occupational therapy, men worked the orchards and fields, while women did the canning and tended livestock. Today the park offers walking trails, dog parks, sports fields and Western State Hospital Cemetery. Over 3,200 patients are buried here, some in mass graves, while others have headstones, but the most destitute people without families, were marked with just identification numbers. Grave Concerns, a non profit organization, has been raising funds to research and replace deteriorating numbered markers with names etched in granite.

There's a nice selection of meatballs, including an "impossible" option for the vegan/vegetarian. AMAZING flavor and large enough portions to be filling and still have leftovers. You can tell each item is crafted with love.

Winters can be rainy and windy, but not bitterly cold as associated with most northern states. Occasionally, we see some snowfall where our rooftops and trees are blanketed in winter splendor but it generally melts before it accumulates to any depth with the exception of nearby Cascade and Olympic mountains where excellent ski and winter sports conditions prevail. Approximately 75 percent of the area’s rainfall occurs in October through March. Record mean precipitation is 39.9 inches annually.
