Burned cross found in gay couple’s yard

E.T., it’s for you You can tell it’s a slow day for news when the lead headline on the Nation/ World section of a metropolitan newspaper reads: “Should humans call out for E.T.?” For pure shock value, that one is right up with “Kardashian marriage is on the rocks,” or “Bucs lose another one.” But a slow news day is better than no day at all, so I was drawn to this Associated Press story in The Tampa Tribune. Several decades ago, I read an article that scientists were considering beaming a “To Whom It May Concern” signal into outer space, a message that any culture intelligent enough to receive it might understand. The only possibility I remember being under consideration was the value of Pi, which is 3.14159 and as many more digits as you want to look up on the Internet. Pi, as the more gifted mathematical scholars among you may remember from high school geometry, has to do with finding the area or circumference of a circle. At our Sunday family dinner table discussion this week, our daughters said this might work, but it would be advisable to transmit the value of Pi as a binary number, since we earthlings probably only use base 10 because we have 10 fingers. I nodded as if I fully understood the rationale behind “binary numbers.” It became clear to me that my initial plan to have two classes of third-graders take turns at a microphone asking “Can you hear me

Laura Tomayko and Ginger Austin believe they have been victims of a hate crime because they are lesbians. They discovered this burned cross in their yard last Saturday. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Detectives are investigating an incident in which a burnt cross was found in a lesbian couple’s yard in Saddlebag Lake Resort. “What it amounts to is, they don’t want us in the park,” said homeowner Virginia Austin. “We are a gay couple.” Austin and her companion, Laura Tomayko, both 70, moved to Saddlebag, a resort community, 10 miles outside Lake Wales, last year. Tomayko found the burned cross in the early hours of Feb. 21, when she woke up to use the

bathroom and take a walk around the property. The couple said they were on edge after they believed someone had tried to break into their home the night before, so Tomayko had been watching their property carefully. When she went outside she discovered a wooden cross, burnt with twisted newspaper around its center. “I just could not believe my eyes that anyone would do that,” Austin said. The case is under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The cross burning took place

Chalet Suzanne will rise again, in a book

Hundreds bid for pieces of famed restaurant, inn By KEVIN BRADY

kbrady@heartlandnewspapers.com

A day after an auction that drew more than 1,400 to Chalet Suzanne, the property’s former owners say they plan to write a cookbook featuring recipes from the famed restaurant. While owners were hoping one buyer would buy the 130acre property, and deep-pocket bidders had expressed interest

in the property, the land went to around 30 different buyers disappointing owner Eric Hinshaw, whose family founded the central Florida icon in 1931. Neither the auctioneer nor the owner would reveal how much the auction brought or who bought the individual lots, although one buyer is reportedly planning to turn a portion of the property

containing a small airstrip into a training center for parachute enthusiasts. Another buyer, a Lake Wales entrepreneur, did purchase the inn and restaurant, but it is unknown at this point what he plans to do with the property. “The auction brought a small fraction of what I was hoping to get, but we are

Frostproof shuffles planning board makeup By JAMES COULTER

Frostproof City Council members unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance to change the membership

of the Planning and Zoning Commission from five to seven members, and to allow its members to simultaneously serve on the Board of Zoning Appeals. This ordinance was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission at their meeting

earlier that evening, as they voted unanimously to forward it to the City Council with recommendation for approval. The ordinance is being proposed as both committees currently have at least one vacant seat, which places them at

risk of failing to meet a quorum if at least one of their members is absent from a meeting. The planning commission requires four or more present members to maintain a quorum.
