Original ensemble pieces are featured along with special arrangements of Blue Note classics, Bowie, Coltrane and beyond.

RISING TRUMPET STAR REVISITS CLASSIC JAZZ STYLES Jay Phelps co-founder of the band Empirical now embarks on his solodebut Jay Walkin’. Jay departs from the current trend of experimental modernism, occasionally evoking the spirit of the 1940’s New York Birdland scene with playful vocals by showman-vocalist Michael Mwenso.

Setting out to honour the integrity and capture what is the traditional spirit of Jazz music, Jay has chosen a stellar line-up consisting of a generational mix of London’s top jazz musicians, including BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Shabaka Hutchings.

Nottingham-born saxophonist, Toni Kofi is a formidable figure on today’s jazz scene. He recently recorded with jazz legend Ornette Coleman and is the first British member of the World Saxophone Quartet. He has an amazing ability to swing and express great feeling, never losing his own original sound. The Standard Time Trio is Kofi’s newly formed band featuring Stacey Kent’s former double bassist, Dave Chamberlain and Washington D.C. native, Rod Youngs on drums. The trio’s captivating rearrangements of classic jazz standards use every instrument to its fullest range, presenting a fresh and vibrant sound for today.

RALPH TOWNER GUITAR & PAOLO FRESU TRUMPET Towner and Fresu have played together rarely and never before as a duo but they are made for each other. Iconic guitarist Ralph Towner has recorded for the ECM label for nearly forty years, working with Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, and his own group Oregon, whilst Carla Bley wrote an album specifically to showcase Fresu’s trumpet sound, The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu.

They will be performing Towner’s original compositions from their recent ECM album Chiaroscuro.

JOHN TURVILLE TRIO JOHN TURVILLE (PIANO) CHRIS HILL (BASS) BEN REYNOLDS (DRUMS) ORIGINAL CONTEMPORARY PIANO TRIO The John Turville Trio play original music exploring the boundaries between contemporary jazz and tango, unified by a very lyrical approach and a strong sense of communication and empathy between the players. Originally from Nottingham, John is the winner of the London Jazz Instrumentalist 2010 and the Promoter’s Choice Award 2009, John has performed throughout Europe at many major venues including Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Bridgewater Hall with the trio.

Kit Downes is one of the most in demand young pianists on the UK scene, and is beginning to get the kind of enthusiastic attention Gwilym Simcock did on his emergence a few years before. His 2010 album Golden was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Backed by the subtle touches of bassist Calum Gourlay and drummer James Maddren, the trio is here expanded to form a new sextet performing original compositions.

This is about to change with the release of an album and major tour in 2011.

Outhouse has been turning heads in London since 2005. Part of a new generation of improvisers and a key member of the firmly established LOOP Collective, the quartet has established itself as one of the leading groups of the current modern Jazz scene in England.

Outhouse, with its unusual line-up comprising two tenor saxophones, double bass and drums, has developed a unique group sound where spontaneity and interplay prevails whilst forging a strong compositional voice as an ensemble. Outhouse’s music is a mix of composition and free improvisation. Special guest Hilmar Jensson is a regular collaborator with Outhouse and regularly plays with New York jazz group Alasnoaxis and a wide range of musicians from the New York downtown scene.

BONINGTON THEATRE Arnold Leisure Centre, High Street, Arnold, Nottinghamshire NG5 7EE The Bonington Theatre is one of the best equipped theatres for its size in Nottinghamshire and is situated in the Arnold Leisure Centre complex in the centre of Arnold, just off the Mansfield Road (A60), 20 minutes from Nottingham city centre.
