Designed for Years 1-7 ‘Investigator’ bags are available in the Djanogly Art Gallery and contain art materials appropriate to each exhibition, with questions to encourage children to really look at the art. Whole classes may use these bags, through our provision of extra clipboards and activity sheets.

Outdoor & Museum Investigators (in development) We are developing resource packs to enable children to explore the natural environment around the lake and woodlands of Highfields Park in which Lakeside is situated. Activity sheets will help the children identify flora and fauna and creative tasks encourage them to experience outdoor learning in an enjoyable, hands-on way.

Similarly work is being progressed on Museum packs in readiness for the new Museum in 2012.

Travelling Exhibitions Everyday Life in Margidunum is a travelling exhibition based on the local site of Roman Margidunum (at Bingham in Nottinghamshire), and includes original artefacts as well as replicas of objects in the Museum. It contains suggestions for activities suitable for Years 1-7, and for children with special needs.

Online Resources from Manuscripts and Special Collections ’Schools Resources’ currently offer two themes which focus on Key Stage 3 and GCSE. They contain suggested lesson plans based around studying full-size digital images of original documents. ’Research Guidance’ provides images, information and quizzes about original sources and key skills, including the use of archives, historic dating systems, and pre-metric weights and measures.

You can download these and other online content from the Manuscripts and Special Collections web pages.

Teachers’ Packs for Theatre Performances Many of our visiting companies provide education packs to accompany their touring shows. They contain background information and ideas for classroom activities to complement your visit to Lakeside. We also produce our own packs. You can download our most recent packs from our website. Examples are: Them with Frozen Tails; And the Rain Falls Down; Romeo and Juliet; and Lost and Found.

LEARNING AT LAKESIDE FOR SCHOOLS & COLLEGES

‘well-organised day with stimulating activities and interviews’ Castle College

Lakeside is the University of Nottingham’s public arts centre and museum. It has a diverse performing and visual arts programme, embracing both traditional and contemporary work, on a single site close to the centre of Nottingham.

Our learning programme offers students excellent opportunities to interact with high-quality arts and museum practice.

Our accessible buildings are set in the beautiful surroundings of Highfields Park at the south entrance of the University Park campus.

What can we do for you?

The Learning Team at Lakeside works closely with schools and colleges, devising activities in collaboration with teachers and other practitioners. We are always interested to hear your ideas and feedback so please get in touch, attend our consultation events, or meet us for an informal discussion. We encourage you talk to us and visit before organising a self-guided class trip.

The Djanogly Art Gallery is nationally renowned for its exhibition programme which ranges from historical shows to groundbreaking contemporary work. New display space and a new learning studio will open in late 2011, part of a larger refurbishment plan.

The University of Nottingham Museum has a collection of regional archaeological finds covering a period of 250,000 years, including objects from the Palaeolithic to the postmedieval period, with good collections of Saxon and Roman material. Currently based in the Department of Archaeology it will relocate to the Rotunda, next to the Djanogly Art Gallery in 2012.

Talks, Tours and Workshops Galleries Fully facilitated sessions - Students engage with the artwork, articulate responses and express personal views through our own staff and a group of highly experienced freelancers, often in the galleries themselves. We also have the facilities for practical art sessions in our Visual Arts Studio.

Secondary school live theatre review - Key shows from our theatre programme are interpreted through the exploration of dramatic conventions and styles, linking closely to examination criteria. Students discuss the deconstruction and reconstruction of the show in lively post-show seminars.

We also explore possibilities for cross-curricular work such as literacy development in a gallery context; and in delivering History GCSE creatively through archive material to explore notions of identity and community.

Secondary school tailored workshops - These are designed for GCSE, AS, and A2 students to support the raising of attainment and gaining higher grades in exams, linked to examination requirements (we offer workshops tailored to any exam board).

The Performing Arts Studio provides a flexible space for these and other activities.

Primary school drama workshops - Supporting creative provision across all key stages. Our story-based workshops for Early Years and Key Stage 1 provide a creative stimulus for younger children, enabling them to stretch their imaginations and physically engage with story making.

The Djanogly Art Gallery and the D H Lawrence Pavilion both have welcoming cafés with easy access to the Park.

Self-guided visits - You are welcome to visit Lakeside’s exhibitions with your class. Self-guided visits are free but please book in advance to help us manage capacity.

The Djanogly Recital Hall located in the Department of Music next to the Rotunda, has an excellent acoustic, and is available for hire outside University term times.

An example of our tailored programme is the help we can provide to deliver the vocational element of the Creative and Media Diploma, introducing students to the full range of roles in a busy cultural venue.

Professional Development INSET INSET sessions for both primary and secondary school teachers are designed to equip teachers with practical skills to use in the classroom as well as providing an insight into rehearsal techniques and artistic practices. They are an ideal opportunity to refresh and extend teaching skills.

Sessions are tailored to suit schools’ needs. For example a drama session may cover basic rules for the drama classroom, games and activities to explore texts and themes, storytelling, and informal performance, while art, craft, design and critical interpretation skills are on offer in INSETS with a visual art focus.

Teachers’ Consultation Events These informal evenings present an opportunity for teachers and others to come together, meet the Lakeside Learning Team, share ideas and plans, create networks between schools, and hear first-hand about new productions and exhibitions.

An example of our tailored programme is the help we can provide to deliver the vocational element of the Creative and Media Diploma, introducing students to the full range of roles in a busy cultural venue.

Professional Development INSET INSET sessions for both primary and secondary school teachers are designed to equip teachers with practical skills to use in the classroom as well as providing an insight into rehearsal techniques and artistic practices. They are an ideal opportunity to refresh and extend teaching skills.

Sessions are tailored to suit schools’ needs. For example a drama session may cover basic rules for the drama classroom, games and activities to explore texts and themes, storytelling, and informal performance, while art, craft, design and critical interpretation skills are on offer in INSETS with a visual art focus.

Teachers’ Consultation Events These informal evenings present an opportunity for teachers and others to come together, meet the Lakeside Learning Team, share ideas and plans, create networks between schools, and hear first-hand about new productions and exhibitions.

Designed for Years 1-7 ‘Investigator’ bags are available in the Djanogly Art Gallery and contain art materials appropriate to each exhibition, with questions to encourage children to really look at the art. Whole classes may use these bags, through our provision of extra clipboards and activity sheets.

Outdoor & Museum Investigators (in development) We are developing resource packs to enable children to explore the natural environment around the lake and woodlands of Highfields Park in which Lakeside is situated. Activity sheets will help the children identify flora and fauna and creative tasks encourage them to experience outdoor learning in an enjoyable, hands-on way.

Similarly work is being progressed on Museum packs in readiness for the new Museum in 2012.

‘linked up various curriculum areas (History, Art, English, Drama) in creative work’ Manning School

Travelling Exhibitions Everyday Life in Margidunum is a travelling exhibition based on the local site of Roman Margidunum (at Bingham in Nottinghamshire), and includes original artefacts as well as replicas of objects in the Museum. It contains suggestions for activities suitable for Years 1-7, and for children with special needs.

Online Resources from Manuscripts and Special Collections ’Schools Resources’ currently offer two themes which focus on Key Stage 3 and GCSE. They contain suggested lesson plans based around studying full-size digital images of original documents. ’Research Guidance’ provides images, information and quizzes about original sources and key skills, including the use of archives, historic dating systems, and pre-metric weights and measures.

Teachers’ Packs for Theatre Performances Many of our visiting companies provide education packs to accompany their touring shows. They contain background information and ideas for classroom activities to complement your visit to Lakeside. We also produce our own packs. You can download our most recent packs from our website.
