Whiskey Jack Black Herefords & Simmental
Darcy & Tamara Kuriga Whitelaw, AB 780-834-7108
I would like to start by thanking Jim and Donna Rowe and their associates for extending the invitation to join their sale, we appreciate the opportunity to show off our program and to do it with some of the best cattlemen in the business.
Our family has been raising commercial Hereford cattle for many years, in 2018 we decided to try something a bit different, and we purchased our first group of F1 heifers. Registered with the American Black Hereford Association, this was just the first step in breeding these beautiful black cows up to pure bred status. To keep a long story short, there is a small group of us in Canada, 4 to be exact that are registered breeders. Black Herefords are all the things a traditional Hereford is and more, better feet, better udders and most of all, a better price at the sale barn. Normally we sell 100% privately off the farm, but when Donna and I spoke about adding a small offering I couldn’t turn her down. Our bull season typically starts in November with buyers walking pens, so for this sale I have chosen a small group of females and a semen package. We do things a bit different I guess, our feeding program consists of good alfalfa hay, green pasture (when available) salt and mineral, that’s it… We base our growth and performance entirely on genetics and therefor can keep cost of production down. When you walk through our bull and heifer pens, how the cattle look today is how they will look on pasture in their working clothes. Both offerings are exciting, the registered heifer on offer will be the first to sell via auction in Canada and the semen is very much the same. Being the first Canadian walking registered Black Hereford bull to stand at stud, that makes him and his offspring extra special. Thank you to all our buyers and supporters over the years. We look forward to seeing everyone in Dawson!

Within calving ease EPD rankings, he is one of the top bulls in the American Black Hereford association registry. He sits number 2 for calving ease direct, 4th for birthweight and 18th for calving ease maternal within the entirety of the breed! He is a sleep easy bull with those kinds of calving EPDs. Homozygous black and homozygous polled, Jo National is the complete package. At only 5 years old he’s making an impact on so many herds across Canada. Fully goggled, black hooves and solid black neck he is the ultimate package. Only a small amount of semen will be available to the public. If black, white faced calves are what you’re looking for in your heifers, National is the bull for the job! Canadian certified only.

WJBH 14G Moonpie 52M is the first female we have ever offered for sale. She is likely the first ever registered Black Hereford heifer to be offered in Canada via auction! Sired by Jo National 0803, she is heterozygous black and polled. Jo National calves are known for their low birthweight, calving ease and vigour. This heifer checks all the boxes, quiet natured, show ring quality and sired by one of the top bulls in the breed, she would made a young 4H’r heck of a show heifer! Don’t miss out on what might be your only opportunity to own a Jo National daughter. Fully vaccinated and scanned open, she is ready for your breeding program.

Lot 21 3 Open Commercial Replacement Heifers
Sired by registered Black Hereford bull Jo National 0803 and backed by some solid Simmental cows, this is an exceptional group of baldie Heifers!
These girls were chosen from 30 replacement heifers that will be joining our commercial breeding program this spring. These heifers were picked based on temperament, growth, feet and udders. Weaning weights are just as important in our females as they are in our bull program. All of these heifers weaned over 700 lbs in the fall. April born, they are up to date on all vaccines including: Bovishield Gold One Shot, Ultrabac 7, Solmectin pour and Clean up II. These heifers were scanned open and have since been starting to cycle. BWF calves always bring premium at auction, these ladies will give you that “white face advantage”.
Friesen Farms
Chad & Anna Friesen
Grande Prairie, Alberta
Anna: 780-831-8338
On behalf of the Friesen family, we would like to welcome you to the Bull Power Sale. We are very excited to be contributing to this sale as for many years now, our family has wanted to be a part of the bull sale. We have worked very hard over the years to grow and develop animals we are proud of and that we feel will stand the test of time.
Originally, we started out with Herefords, a breed we will always love for many reasons. However, when we started introducing Angus to our herd, it didn’t take us long to realize all the exceptional attributes in the Angus breed. In the fall of 2021, we bought the Carter family’s red and black Angus heifer calves, and so the journey began. We are proud of the pen of bulls we have on offer as they come out of dams that are easy calvers, have good udders and good feet. We also love what our herd sires have to offer – they have all been used as heifer bulls to start and then as herd bulls. They have excellent calving ease, have been consistent breeders and have produced productive heifers.
As a veterinarian, I wanted to produce bulls on our farm that are muscled up but not pushed to hard because I want our bulls to stand up over the years. I want the bulls from our farm to be known for longevity, ability to breed and produce offspring that have excellent calving ease and are structurally sound with exceptional ability to grow and be productive.
Special thanks to Donna Rowe for support in making this first sale a possibility. Donna, I couldn’t have done it without you! Your advice and expertise haven been invaluable.
If you have any questions about our bulls on offer or the commercial heifers, please feel free to contact me.

Most of the dams are over 6 and still in the herd.

Pens 3 &4 – Angus Crosses
We have a complete herd health program in place starting at birth with the Nasalgen intranasal vaccine and followed with Bovishield Gold 5 and Ultrabac 7/Somubac as calves. Vaccines are boosted annually thereafter. The bulls have been boosted prior to the sale and ready to go for breeding, no need to boost in the spring. Bulls received ivomec in the fall as well as a second dose in January followed by Cyclence.
The heifers are on the same program and have also had their boosters so do not need to be revaccinated this spring.

Keen Industries Angus is excited to be a new consignor in this sale. We stepped into the world of breeding registered Angus cattle to build some bulls for our commercial cow herd and it has grown from there. Kim has a strong interest in the genetics and enjoys seeing how that translates into physical traits. We strive for well-rounded bulls regarding calving ease, performance, sound temperaments, solid feet and strong maternal backgrounds. We want bulls that produce vigorous calves that are born easy and get up and grow.
We are located northwest of Fort St John, BC and would welcome anyone that would like to come out and view our cattle. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
With the sale falling earlier this year our yearling pen of bulls is not quite ready for breeding soundness exams but they will be available late March.
Keen Rainmaker 4L is an AI son out of Basin Rainmaker 4404 and is ready to go to work on cows. He is moderate framed with good length and solid feet. His average daily gain from birth to 365 days was 2.8 lbs/day and 3.4 lbs from birth to weaning. His dam is a very maternal cow with an excellent tight udder with small teats and strong feet and goes back to Daines Heavy Si 57Z and Western Freedom 505. This bull should make some nice females for replacements and calves that grow well for the sale ring. He was 20 months old in this picture taken Oct 12th, 2024.
