MANAGER'S MESSAGE Dean Lytton COO/General Manager

Dear Members, One of the most common phrases during my first month when meeting many of you for the first time was - "what a crazy time to get started as our new General Manager!”.

Under normal circumstances of simply starting a new job, dealing with relocation, living out of a suitcase, and getting acclimated with Lake Quivira, our community, our staff, and operations; the answer is of course, YES, it is. Add to that the challenges of an ongoing pandemic, changes to our 4th of July festivities, cancellation of many of our traditional events, the opening of our new Community Center, and a few other challenges - the answer is an emphatic, YES, it is! There is an anonymous quote that comes to mind when looking back over my first month, “Challenging roads lead to beautiful destinations”. And no, I am not talking about the current state of Holliday Drive.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought challenges that impact our operation, our traditional events, and ultimately given us all a longing for things to return to “normal”. Despite that, I see our community and our staff rising to the challenge and overcoming the impact of a pandemic. Upon on my arrival, we immediately implemented multiple COVID-19 safety protocols for our staff including temperature and symptom checks prior to each shift. Keeping our staff safe so we can continue to operate for our members (knocking on wood as I write this) is top of mind daily. As a Community, many of you reached out seeking clarity during the uptick in regional COVID-19 cases that brought new restrictions. I hope you’ll find that through personal phone calls, responses to your e-mails, and e-blasts to the community, we did everything possible in working with Q, Inc., the City of Lake Quivira, and local health officials, to make decisions that were in the best interest of our Community. Taking action to cancel or deviate from long-standing traditions and events has been difficult for many, which is why I can’t thank you enough for your thoughtful feedback and support as we navigate through these tough decisions during unprecedented times.

Despite those challenges, operations continue.

MANAGER'S MESSAGE Our beautiful Community Center- The Q, opened on July 10th and continues to see increased activity throughout the month. I encourage you all to explore The Q and take advantage of Group Fitness, Massage services, the workout facility, Lap Pool, Tennis, Pickle-ball, Merchandise and much more. The Q bar has delicious coffee and smoothie options each morning as well!

Our Board of Directors, department heads, and staff have been overwhelmingly supportive during my fist month. I learn more about all aspects of our operations each day and look forward to introducing new and updated standard operating procedures to improve operations, service, accountability, communication, and ultimately put our staff in a position of success each and every day.

To the many Members I have met through committee meetings, e-mails, phone calls, or in person around the club and community, I cannot thank you enough for the warm welcome. I will apologize in advance for not recognizing all of you – masks certainly make it tricky to get to know names and faces! Yes – it is a challenging time to get started, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Regardless of the challenges – it is, and always will be, a beautiful destination.

It’s summertime and the Midwest heat is here to stay! The lake is the most active I've seen in a couple of years and al carte is busier than ever with to-go’s and patio dining. The new umbrellas were a simple but much needed enhancement to the services for the beach patio and I am very pleased to see all the families and their friends enjoy their summer here at LQ. If you haven't yet, please stop by The Q Bar at the Community Center. We are offering a full-service espresso bar and smoothies with more to come as we settle into the new space.

Eliza, our barista, is training and researching daily to give us the best experience of a gourmet espresso bar and coffee shop.

Please stop by and check her out and ask about our seasonal lattes and shaker teas.

KITCHEN Recipe

In the dog days of summer 1 dessert sticks out the most, coconut cake. The sweet and light layer sponge cake with a hint of coconut milk and the crispy and crunchy toasted flakes make this a summertime hit! Here, I'd like to share my favorite summertime treat with you. Enjoy!

Serves 8-10 What you'll need: 3, 9-inch round cake pans parchment paper medium bowl stand mixer rubber spatula hand mixer 2-qt. sauce pan For the cake: unsalted butter, for greasing 2 cups flour 1 cup desiccated coconut 1 tsp. baking powder For the meringue: 6 egg whites 1 2/3 cups sugar 3 cups sweetened shredded coconut

1 tsp. kosher salt 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 eggs, seperated 1 1/4 cup mayonnaise 3/4 cup coconut milk 1/2 cut plus 1 tbsp. buttermilk 2 tsp. coconut extract 2 tsp. vanilla extract

Make the cake: Heat oven to 325°. Grease three 9" cake pans with butter and line with parchment paper; set aside. Whisk flour, desiccated coconut, baking powder, and salt in a bowl; set aside. Place sugar and egg yolks in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment; mix until fluffy. Add mayonnaise, coconut milk, buttermilk, coconut and vanilla extracts; mix until combined. With the motor running, slowly add dry ingredients until batter forms; transfer batter to a bowl and set aside. Clean stand mixer bowl and add egg whites; replace paddle with whisk attachment. Whip whites until soft peaks form; fold into cake batter. Divide batter between prepared pans, smoothing tops with a rubber spatula; drop pans lightly on a counter to expel large air bubbles. Bake until a toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Let cakes cool for 20 minutes in pans; invert onto wire racks and let cool.

Make the meringue: Using an electric hand mixer, beat egg whites in a bowl until medium-stiff peaks form, 5–7 minutes; set aside. Bring sugar and ¼ cup water to a boil in a 2-qt. sauce pan fitted with a candy thermometer; cook, without stirring, until temperature reaches 250°, 4–5 minutes. With the mixer on low, slowly drizzle hot syrup into egg whites until combined. Increase speed to high; beat until meringue forms stiff peaks, about 3 minutes more.

Assemble the cake: Place one cake layer on a cake stand and spread 3 cups meringue over cake; sprinkle with ¼ cup coconut.

Repeat with second layer. Place remaining layer on top; cover top and sides with remaining meringue and cover outside of cake with remaining coconut, pressing lightly to adhere. Chill cake 30 minutes to firm meringue; serve chilled or at room temperature.

Brad Lackey Grounds Manager & Course Superintendent In the turf industry, June 1st through August 31st is usually referred to as the 90 days of hell. This is especially common verbish in the transition zone that we reside in. High temperatures, high humidity and high night time low temperatures really don’t do cool season turf any favors. Bentgrass roots stop growing whenever the temperature reaches 86

degrees or higher and high night time lows in the 70s don’t allow the plants much time for recovery. Disease pressure increases this time of year too with the daytime humidity and need for heavier watering lends opportunity for such problems.

In almost all areas of the course we have been battling nutsedge again this year. This has been a consistent problem that becomes very unsightly as the nutsedge out grows the desirable turf and leaves areas of the course looking unkept. We have been aggressively treating the nutsedge since it first started showing up this summer. Similar to the Bermuda grass treatments, the controls we use for nutsedge leaves the desirable turf “dinged”. This results in slower growth and off color areas where the nut sedge has been treated. Broadleaf weeds and crabgrass are also on the list for receiving applications to eradicate.

Another area which has experienced some off coloration are the greens and rough areas contaminated with poa annua. Poa annua, also known as annual bluegrass, is a real problem on greens in particular in the Transition Zone as it is very susceptible to disease and also produces annoying seed heads which can seriously affect ball roll if left unchecked. We have been aggressive in our treatment of the poa and this can lead to the poa turning off color as it is under regulation

from the growth regulators that we use. This was particularly noticeable earlier this spring when the soil temperatures were cool and the bentgrass wasn’t actively growing. As for the rough we applied PGR’s in the spring to control the growth of the fescue, and in turn, the poa shrunk down and looked off colored.

As we get closer to fall aerification we will suspend the use of growth regulators in order to allow the greens to heal more quickly from the aerification process. We will begin to use the growth regulators once again after the greens have healed in after the aerification process is complete.

Happy August LQ Members!

It’s hard to believe that we are more than halfway through 2020. Unfortunately, our golf season and tournament schedules are continuing to change monthly due to Covid restrictions and concerns.Our number one priority is the safety of our Members and Guests. The LQ Golf Genius app will continue to be updated and notifications will be sent by text / email in regards to all changes.

With the amount of everyday play, we would like everyone to please continue to practice the following maintenance tips so we can keep LQ in top notch shape.

Always fix your ball mark and at least one other on every green. Below is a short video that will show you how to properly repair a ball mark.

Just as ball marks require a certain technique to correctly fix, divots also require attention to detail for proper repair. So, the next time you take a divot please keep the following in mind: Take your time fixing or filling divots. Regardless of the club used, replacing a divot is a simple act: find the dislodged turf and replace it, making sure to push the divot back into the scar with your foot to enhance rooting. However, if the divot explodes into pieces and cannot be replaced, fill the divot with the SAND mix provided by the maintenance staff on the course or on each rental cart.

When using the sand mix, it is important to avoid over or under filling divots. Underfilling a divot will result in a depression that affects the lie.

On the other hand, overfilled divots will damage mowing equipment and create poor playing conditions. To properly fill a divot, directly place sand mix in each divot, making sure the sand mix does not spill onto undamaged turf. Add sand mix until it is even with the base of the adjacent turf. Finally, just as with replacing divots, use your foot to compact and level the sand mix. This will provide better soil-to-seed contact to enhance germination and seedling survival.

Please continue to follow the below Golf Cart Restrictions on the Course If there is a RED flag up in front of the Golf Shop and on the 1st & 10th tees, this means that all carts are restricted to the path that day.

If there are no RED flags up, you may enter thru the enter posts, staying only in the fairway, and exit thru the exit posts. Please do not drive your golf cart past the exit posts.

Carts are NOT to be driven in the rough unless you hit your tee shot into an adjacent fairway, you may then drive 90 degrees to and from your ball.

To maximize the use of grass at the Practice Facility, all Members and Guests are asked to please place your ball at the grassy back edge of your previous divot removing just the necessary portion of grass with each swing. The middle example in the image below (linear divot pattern) is how your pattern should look after 30 swings.

A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots result in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. As a result, the hitting bays need to be rotated more frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee.

The linear divot pattern involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In doing so, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. This can usually be done for 15 to 20 shots before moving sideways to create a new line of divots. So long as a minimum of 4 inches of live turf is preserved between strips of divots, the turf will recover quickly. Because this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method.

A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in a given area. While this approach does not necessarily result in a full-sized divot removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery.

RACQUETS

Graham Battle Racquets Sports Director

As the Summer season winds down, the racquets program will shift from our Summer schedule into our Fall schedule. As we prepare to hopefully send kids back to school, junior programming will move to the afternoon with adult programming changing times in the mornings and evenings. Be sure to check out our full programming schedule!

LQ League play will continue through the end of August with weekly play. Social distancing before, during, and after league play is strongly encouraged. We ask that all players not gather in groups at the tennis deck. Be on the lookout for Fall LQ league play starting in September!

Tencap league play will resume on August 17th with matches Monday-Friday during the mornings and evenings. During peak hours we are expecting the courts to be close to full capacity. If you are planning on playing tennis or pickle-ball please make sure to reserve a court to ensure availability.

I am extremely excited about "The Q" opening with 2 brand new courts available for member use. If you are looking to get out of the heat during a hot summer day or looking to play during a rainy day "The Q" would be a great option for all racquets players.

The racquets program is looking forward to the Fall season and we hope that we will see you on the courts soon!

Staff at The Q takes cleanliness and safety very seriously! We are constantly cleaning and sanitizing equipment several times throughout the day. Safety, however, is everyone’s job.

We expect our members and guests to help the cause by cleaning equipment before and after it’s used. Per Wyandotte County Health Department, masks are required at all times when visiting The Q unless guests are swimming or using the shower facilities.

If members are interested in utilizing the equipment within The Q during lower usage times, it’s been our experience that 5am to 6am, 2pm to 4pm, and 8pm to 9pm are typically the lower usage times. We hope to see you all soon!
