Lake of the Isles residents and creators Mary Lazarus and Lucy Pellizzer met thanks to a mutual appreciation for language, travel and design.

After 22 years of fun and friendship, the two embarked on another adventure together, Vestiges. Inspired by beautiful souvenir towels discovered during a trip to Europe, Vestiges was created to bring back the same kind of lovely souvenir towels to the U.S. By designing new eye-catching towels for states, cities and landmarks around the country, they are continuing the time-honored tradition of collecting souvenir towels that began in America during the 1930s.

Vestiges has produced more than 100 unique, hand-illustrated designs in five collections, representing all 50 states, Washington D.C. and regions around the globe in partnership with the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The towels are exclusive one-of-kind designs, and truly small pieces of art that are affordable, useful and a great addition to any kitchen no matter what state it is in.

Meet vibrant local Kenwood residents Stephanie Shimp and her two exhuberant and charming children Ruby and Vincent.

Stephanie, an Iowa native, is first super mom, then business owner, neighbor, and dog owner-all in that order!

She is the co-founder of Blue Plate Restaurant Company, a group of Minneapolis-St. Paul restaurants started in 1993 with David Burley. The company first opened Highland Grill, then seven restaurants followed-including Freehouse, Edina Grill, and the popular neighborhood Lowry restaurant.

The family loves their neighborhood. “There are a lot of transplants here, and I find it so friendly and welcoming”, said Stephanie. “You can hang out in your front yard and talk to your neighbors-I love that. “It’s the type of neighborhood where you never have to worry where your kids are,”

Nine year old Vincent , “is one part super-hero, one part inspector gadget and one part Houdini. He is creative, inventing, and loves to fish. He can beat most in a pull-ups competition or in a race across the monkey bars.

He doesn’t mind putting on a suit and getting dressed up.

Ruby like her mother, loves creating her own unique style, mixing colors and patterns. “She is very creative.”

“We are an action-packed family, but not in a typical soccer-mom, volleyball tournament way. Like the restaurant business where you make quick decisions, always on the flythat depicts our family and I like to embrace that", says Shimp.

Stephanie, being a style lover, shares the word wear-aby like ther-a-py, "I believe fashion affects how we feel, and I love color". She is known for wearing pops of color during the cold Minnesota winters, and it is reflected in the design of her home as well.

ACHIEVER Written by Lucy Nelson

Meet young equestrian Maddy Gearhart, an eleven year old fifth grader at City of Lakes Waldorf School. She competes in the equestrian sport of 'Eventing' which consists of several phases, a Dressage test, and a Show Jumping course. The final phase and Maddy’s favorite phase of the event is the Cross Country, where riders gallop across rolling hills, jumping obstacles like logs, fences, picnic tables, and crossing ditches and water.

Maddy can be described as a sweet and hardworking student. She is dedicated to a rigorous weekly training schedule with her prestigious riding team, Liz Lund Eventing and Dressage based at Copeland Farms in Independence Minnesota.

She loves spending time with her family and friends, time at school, and most of all, with her horse “Simple Twist of Fate,” aka “Dylan.” Riding has been her passion since she began at a very young age of six. She loves to pour her time and energy into mastering the sport and care for her horse.

Her family jokes that she would much rather muck a stall than clean her room. When she is not riding, the driven young woman babysits and finds other small jobs to help pay for her event entry fees, and with the care and boarding of her horse Dylan.

Meet Jack El-Hai, a Lake of the Isles resident, husband, father, community activist, teacher, lecturer…but for this profile…a life long “writer” of continuing success. He began responding to his calling as a writer as a young boy with his first school assignment. His seriousness is apparent as he describes his growing affection for putting ideas on paper at every opportunity. He began by writing many articles for magazines, local and national.

Then it was on to factual stories that represented his “current obsession.” The first published full treatise was Lost Minnesota the tale of the destroyed “heritage” structures in our great cities.

Booked frequently as a speaker, he was initially discovered by Terry Gross on Philadelphia’s FRESH AIR and this “in person” chapter of his career proved most rewarding. He will lecture at MIT and Harvard early this spring.

His writing day? It is faithful to a routine. Nine to five weekdays; no nights or weekends. He has “never awakened at 2 a.m. to write down an idea.”

His subjects are most often histories of science and medicine. Famous for The Lobotomist, Mr.ElHai’s newest book, The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, centers around the fateful meeting with Hermann Goring and Dr. Douglas Kelley, at the end of WW ll.

Among writers he reveres for their works; Charlotte Bronte and Victor Hugo are examples of emotion but empty of sentimentality. Since 1988 Jack has been working on a book, the proposal of which has been rejected twice. What might be the solution to ending this frustration? He, sighing, replied, “To admit that it is not a book.”

Spring Progressive Design Event On Thursday March 10, publishers from Lake of the Isles Living Magazine, Summit Hill Living Magazine,and Deephaven Life Magazine joined together for lively evening and Progressive Design Event at International Market Square.

Participating showrooms were NorthStar Kitchens, Vujovich Design & Build, Chester-Hoffman Interior Design, Cambria, Designs by Martina and Abitare Design Studio.

Guests arrived in several limousines provided by Renee's Royal Valet.

On August 6, 2003, Minneapolis resident and advertising professional Kim Witczak’s life changed forever. She received a phone that Woody, her husband of almost 10 years, was found dead as a result of an undisclosed pharmaceutical drug side effect. Woody’s death made no sense to her and anyone else that knew him. So Kim went on the quest for truth about the dangers of antidepressants. It was too late for Woody, but she decided something had to be done with this knowledge.

Almost 13 years later and over 75 trips to Washington DC, Kim is a leading national drug safety advocate and speaker. Her work has been featured in major news media such as Fortune, Readers Digest, Consumer Reports, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Star Tribune as well as subject of numerous local and national television news stories and documentaries. Kim has testified before US Senate on FDA related issues as well as numerous FDA Advisory Committees. She was recently appointed to the FDA Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee as a Consumer Representative.

During her eulogy at Woody’s memorial service, Kim made a public promise to Woody to make sure his death would leave the world a better place. Kim says, “If just one family is informed, then his life made a difference.” Even though Woody is gone, his powerful story is as relevant today as it was 13 years ago. The public needs to ask questions and be informed about the drugs we put in our bodies. The truth is we all could be Woody.
