We absolutely LOVE the convenience of the neighborhood, the easy access to downtown and uptown The Gearhart family has happily lived in the Lake of the Isles neighborhood for almost three and a half years. They purchased their historic home four years ago, and spent about six months planning and renovating the interior before they moved in. “We absolutely LOVE the convenience of the neighborhood, the easy access to downtown and uptown,” said Jennaea. “We feel so lucky that we live right in between Lake of the Isles and Cedar Lake. We enjoy canoeing on Lake of the Isles and lazy summer afternoons at Hidden Beach. A great night involves entertaining and hanging out in their back yard with their kids and friends.

A bonus is the tree swing out in the front yard. They also have a quick commute out to the barn where their horse is boarded in Independence. Both mom and daughter Maddy ride with "Liz Lund Eventing and Dressage" in Independence with their horse. Jennaea is a talented freelance interior designer. She came to that from an obsessive hobby and a retail background. Her first job out of school was in the buying office of Daytons. She graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina with a degree in Economics. Kurt is the CEO of ITM-TwentyFirst, a life insurance servicing firm in Minneapolis. Prior to that he worked for Credit Suisse in NYC as a Managing Director. Prior to that he was a partner at Sidley-Austin in Chicago. Kurt got his undergrad degree from Miami University in Ohio and his JD from The University of Miami School of Law in Florida. A fun fact about the couple – they graduated from high school together in Ohio but didn’t start dating until after college! Jennaea is very invoIved in the kids’ school, City of Lakes Waldorf School, recently joining the Board of Trustees. “Our oldest will be graduating from there (eighth grade) this June and will be off to Blake School in the fall for high school. Our youngest plays soccer with the Joy of The People program!”

The family has spent some time researching their historic home, and they renovated the house in a way that allows them to live like the first families that owned it.

“I think families enjoyed entertaining in those early days. They discovered one family that had lived in their home had a large family like theirs. I think we have kept the best of the original home and updated parts to allow us to truly enjoy the home the same way. Everyone who comes here remarks on how comfortable and at ease they feel here, and that is the way we love to live,” said Jennaea.

Design Note: The homeowner and Albertsson Hansen Architecture collaborated on this classic Victorian home in the Kenwood neighborhood had previously been updated in the 1980’s, resulting in a half bath and an abandoned chimney separating the kitchen from the dining room, and a closet separating the front hall from direct access to the back yard. Our job was to open these connections up and provide the flow that the house lacked through architectural and interior design. The long narrow living room was shortened by relocating the half bath at one end, allowing the kitchen and dining room to be reconnected. The kitchen was completely remodeled using stainless steel Ikea cabinets below the counters, contrasted with full height custom cabinetry on the sidewall. An existing window to the side yard was discovered and brought back to get additional daylight. The entire house including the wood floors were given a coat of bright white paint, allowing objects, furniture and art to play the starring roles against a clean neutral background. The master bathroom was completely remodeled, and better connected to the bedroom via a pair of repurposed pocket doors discovered in the walls on the first floor.

2501 Highway 100 S, St. Louis Park, MN

Minneapolis, Minn.—Mill City Farmers' Market, Minneapolis’ trusted source for local, sustainable and organic food, is opening its 12th outdoor season on Saturday, May 6. The market brings a wide assortment of fresh food, cooking education and live entertainment to one beautiful place, overlooking the picturesque Stone Arch Bridge. This year the market will continue its Mill City Cooks demonstrations with a fresh, new sponsor—Lakewinds Food Co-op. Lakewinds will be stocking the market’s unique outdoor kitchen inside the Mill City Museum’s historic train shed and, new this year, providing children’s activities during the demos, so parents can have some time to relax and learn from the Mill City Cooks’ professional chefs! Seasoned chef and public health educator Jenny Breen will be returning to the kitchen along with Beth Jones and Nettie Colón of the University of Minnesota’s Campus Club fine dining restaurant. All three of the chefs are excited to kick off a series of 26 20- to 30-minute cooking classes that focus on easy, healthy and seasonal dishes using farmers' market ingredients. New this year, the market’s chefs will present the demos as monthly series, building off one another from week to week. You can join the free classes every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Mill City Farmers Market (704 S. 2nd St., 55401) in the train shed patio area. This month the chefs will be teaching participants knife skills, meal planning and pantry stocking tips in the May series "Food Prep Basics." When spring arrives in the Lake of the Isles neighborhood, the fruit blossoms begin to burst behind a large white fence on Kenwood Parkway. The first to open are the three apricot trees. Minnesota-developed and cold-hardy, the Sungold and Moongold varieties cross-pollinate each other. Next to blossom are the 15-year-old Toka plum and Alderman plum trees. The crescendo is the simultaneous blossoming of the cherry, apple and pear trees. This 16-tree urban orchard has been lovingly cultivated by Susie and Hal Goldstein, raised alongside the four Goldstein children who enjoyed the fruits of this secret garden. Charlie Roettger, a longtime Lake of the Isles area resident and Southwest High School student, works to change the lives of young children through art. He is currently an assistant for supervising and helping kids with their projects at ARTrageous Adventures. This program, run by Amanda Vallone, holds multiple themed camps, as well as after-school programs, all of which have a focus on art. It is conveniently located across from Kenwood School and next to the Bockley Art Gallery. Charlie works to help kids who may be behind on their projects or aren’t really getting into whatever they are working on. By building bonds with the children, Charlie is able to provide the kids whatever they may need for their individual projects. In addition to

this, Charlie helps set up and prepare the materials for whatever ARTrageous Adventures has in store for the kids on any given day. He enjoys seeing familiar faces as well as new faces, and always works with a smile. He is interested in continuing this sort of work when he is older, perhaps becoming a social worker, a school counselor, or a psychologist. In addition to working at ARTrageous Adventures, Charlie has been babysitting in the neighborhood. In his free time, Charlie plays a number of fantasy games such as Dungeons and Dragons as well as Magic: the Gathering. One of the most jovial and kind-hearted Lake of the Isles residents, Charlie is a perfect example of how great our community can be. June 2017 • Lake of the Isles Living

Impact Since 1996, Interact’s mission to create art that challenges perceptions of disability has opened doors for artists with disabilities and audiences eager to experience their work. The people who come to Interact might never have seen the arts as a life choice, but who now see theater and art as essential to their humanity. Interact is multi-cultural, intergenerational, and embraces the entire spectrum of disability labels. Jeanne Calvit, from South Minneapolis, is the founder, Artistic and Executive Director of Interact. Her vision of realizing human potential for the largest marginalized group in the world resulted in creating a sacred space for these artists to grow and flourish. Interact’s work is driven by a vision of radical inclusion. They collaborate with artists with and without disabilities, from mainstream and marginalized communities, whose stories and life experiences are the grist for the original, ensemblegenerated theatrical work, and inspire the spectrum of media that are created in the studio. Interact was the first—and remains the only—visual and performing arts organization for artists with disabilities that is creating full time at the professional level, and sharing exciting seasons of performances and exhibitions with their audiences. Interact is recognized for producing innovative work and for bringing the work of artists with disabilities into a professional, appreciative and supportive public arena. Interact Theater produces original, fully staged productions each year, along with more informal works-in-process that attract a wide, eclectic audience. Interact Studio shows over 500 new works in public exhibitions each year, and the Gallery season is complemented with special exhibition events at venues throughout the metro area.

Janne Flisrand is a small-business owner with 15 years of experience in bringing people together to make progressive change in Minneapolis. Janne sees her role, both professionally and as an activist, as solving problems in cities by listening to the expertise of the people. Janne’s company was hired to lead the Minnesota Green Communities initiative. It brought state and city policymakers together with nonprofits to ensure all the affordable housing funded in Minnesota is green and healthy. In 2009, she helped found the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, a volunteer-driven coalition that brought Open Streets to Minneapolis and helped pass the city’s recent protected bikeway plan. Janne grew up in Austin, MN. After college, she taught in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 18 months. She moved to Minneapolis in 1996, when she cooperatively purchased her four-unit building in Lowry Hill. Janne earned her MA in Urban Anthropology from the University of Memphis after leading a drop-in youth program in Saint Paul. As a landlord, Janne’s turned her building into a real community. Her backyard doubles as a community garden and meeting place, which she tills with her tenants and neighbors. She also planted a front-yard North Star cherry tree, which she calls her “excuse for a front-yard party.” She's a year-round bike commuter along with her husband, Ethan. He moved to Minneapolis in 1991 after graduating from the University of Virginia to study political science at the University of Minnesota. He is a social studies teacher at St. Paul Central High School where he is a proud union member (St. Paul Federation of Teachers).

Patio Spring is here and uptown is buzzing with locals flocking to catch some sunshine while they dine alfresco. A favorite location for Lake of the Isles residents is 'Nico's Taco and Tequila Bar. Neighborhood owners Jenna and Alex Victoria have created a 'must visit' with their sunny inviting outdoor patio. Located right at Hennepin and 25th Nico's is a favorite spot for authentic mouthwatering street tacos and scratch margaritas made with only 100% Agave Tequila. "We love this unique location and the fun patio in the summer. What's better than having tacos and cold a margarita while "people watching" on Hennepin Avenue. It's the quintessential uptown experience.
